“Even though this is a book about snake girls and lizard boys — it's about universal experiences: we can't change what's happening, but you never know when being kind will change somebody else. ,” Jonathan Hill's an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator in Portland, Oregon — and a returning guest - to celebrate the launch of his latest graphic novel: “Lizard Boy 2: The Most Perfect Summer Ever.” While the sci-fi title might have you scratching your head, this YA sequel is actually a beautiful, compelling story of self-acceptance, community, and family — we can't recommend it enough for parents and kids alike, as well as it's prequel “Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy.” Jonathan is HALF Vietnamese American - and while the story is about an immigrant family, community acceptance, and belonging - Jonathan's work, his characters and their journey are important for all of us to be reading at this particular moment in our nation.  Jonathan's work has been published by Walker Books, First Second, and Oni Press - and featured at ABC New Voices, YALSA and JLG selections, and won awards like the 2012 Carla Cohen Free Speech Award, the 2021 Believer Book Award for Graphic Literature, and the 2022 Junior Library Guild Selection. Jonathan's also an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Viet Nam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative - having taught at the Pacific Northwest College, the Oregon College of Art and Craft. He graduated as valedictorian from the prestigious Savannah College of Art & Design, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council.  Jonathan's an important voice, creating important work for not just our kids, but for all of us to be learning from — so be sure to check out his work. Who were his inspirations? What is the essence of VW? And did he play as hard as he worked?Jeremy tells all and more.We found out how two creative teams independently came up with same Polo Cops idea. And how, for the same brief, King Kong was also in the mix and the client was persuaded to run it a year later. The Polo Ice Car was another fascinating story … a press ad that became national news, involving a life sized car carved from 9.5 tonnes of ice. We also discussed the Surprisingly Ordinary Prices Wedding execution, which is still the most awarded print ad ever (facts by Neil Dawson). Then there was Swear Box, Ele-pump, Cabriolet, Dr Who x3, Nightdrive and more. In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we dive deep into the chilling case of John Cooper, a seemingly ordinary Welshman who earned the nickname 'The Bullseye Killer.' Cooper's story takes an unsettling turn after his appearance on the game show Bullseye in 1989, followed by a double murder just weeks later. We explore Cooper's early life as a career criminal, his brief brush with fortune in 1978, and his downward spiral into violent crime. The episode details the brutal Pembrokeshire murders, including the 1985 killing of Richard and Helen Thomas and the 1989 murders of Peter and Gwenda Dixon. Cooper's ability to evade capture for years, his manipulation of those around him, and the eventual breakthrough in the case through advancements in forensic science are discussed in depth. We also highlight the role of journalist Jonathan Hill in obtaining crucial evidence and how the collaboration between media and law enforcement was pivotal in bringing Cooper to justice. Furthermore, we touch on the possibility of Cooper's involvement in other unsolved cases and the ongoing quest for justice in the community of Pembrokeshire. This episode serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of human behavior and the relentless pursuit of truth in solving even the most challenging crimes.00:00 Introduction to the Bullseye Killer00:37 John Cooper's Early Life and Criminal Background01:30 The Pembrokeshire Murders02:36 The Brutal Attack on Teenagers and Family Abuse04:56 The Long Road to Justice06:31 The Role of Forensic Science and Media07:15 Unsolved Cases and Potential Further Victims08:23 Reflections on Justice and Community Impact12:31 Closing Thoughts and Upcoming Episodes Hosted on Acast. A Diagnostic Breakthrough for Alzheimer's Summary In this conversation, Dr. Jonathan Hill discusses his work in nanopore sequencing-based technology and its applications in genetic and epigenetic research. He shares his experiences working in Brazil and his passion for preserving the rainforest. The conversation also explores the use of AI in analyzing the genetic underpinnings of tobacco addiction and the potential impact on addiction treatment. Dr. Hill highlights his lab's breakthrough in identifying early biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease using DNA methylation signatures.  Takeaways Nanopore sequencing is a powerful technology that allows for real-time analysis of native DNA and RNA, regardless of length, and provides valuable insights into genetic and epigenetic research. Preserving the rainforest is crucial, and initiatives like the Rainforest Trust play a vital role in protecting the biodiversity and resources found in these ecosystems. AI technologies, when used in conjunction with genetic research, can accelerate the identification of candidate genes associated with complex conditions like tobacco addiction, leading to personalized approaches for smoking cessation and addiction treatment. The integration of AI technologies in genetic research should be approached with caution, as the black box nature of AI can limit our understanding of the underlying biology. It is important to carefully test and explain AI models to build trust among users. The use of nanopore sequencing and DNA methylation signatures shows promise in the early detection of Alzheimer's disease, potentially allowing for personalized approaches to treatment and intervention. Sound Bites "One of my bucket list items, one of my dreams would be to set up a nanopore sequencing lab in the Amazon and just sequence that biodiversity and create that data so we could glean it for everything it's worth and learn so much about how our world works." "Nanopore sequencing is based on protein nanopores that exist in nature, and these particular nanopores can pass DNA through the pore." "AI technologies, when used in conjunction with genetic research, can accelerate the identification of candidate genes associated with complex conditions like tobacco addiction, leading to personalized approaches for smoking cessation and addiction treatment." “Biology is not rocket science, it's much harder.” "Better diagnosis comes better treatment." Whether opening a physical store or operating the franchise from within your home, your overall location can play a big part in your success. “I remember someone asked ‘why do you only draw white people?' It really put a mirror to me and I was like, ‘why is that?' I think it's the culture I grew up around — I didn't have that opportunity to see myself.” Jonathan Hill is an award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and educator living in Portland, OR. Jonathan is the creator of numerous graphic novels - including Americus, Odessa, and his latest - Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy. And your guess of which of this is about sci-fi dystopia is probably wrong - but all of his works hit on some pretty relevant themes of family and belonging. Jonathan's work does that thing that great fiction does - wrapping an important theme in a seemingly fantastic narrative. While there is a Vietnamese American family as part of the story, let's just say the main characters are also not from around here. In our chat we really got to understand the why behind so many of Jonathan's story telling choices. We'd definitely recommend Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy for any of us who have ever just wanted to belong - or for folks who need a better understanding of what it's like to not belong. Beyond being a graphic novelist, Jonathan's an accomplished cartoonist with clients like Microsoft, the Portland Trailblazers, the Vietnam Literature Project, the Inlander, Fantagraphics Books, Dark Horse Comics, Tor.com, The Believer Magazine, Literary Arts, and Powell's City of Books. AND he's been the staff illustrator to The Asian Reporter since 2007. Jonathan also teaches comics and visual narrative — having taught at Pacific Northwest College of Art, Oregon College of Art was Writer in Residence through Literary Arts' Writers in the Schools program — and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Literary Arts and chairs the Youth Programs Advisory Council. It goes without saying, Jonathan's one of those empathetic creators whose work you'll want to keep an eye on. Should chameleon keepers have a different husbandry than chameleon breeders? It doesn't make sense that they would, but that is a typical situation. We know why this is, but shouldn't it be different? Would you, as a customer, be willing to pay what it takes for breeders to provide the same level of care as keepers do? Jonathan Hill of iPardalis joins me to discuss what we should expect from ourselves as breeders and as customers in the chameleon community.

We all have doubts and uncertainties; but is the whole idea of faith simply not credible? Questions and doubts are not opposite faith…they are part of a life of faith. But questions and doubts can either drive us to or drive us away from exploring the Christian story. Some questions often asked about religion, faith, or Christianity are rooted in misunderstanding or faulty assumptions. "Negative" apologetics is trying to deal with these misunderstandings so that others might consider giving faith a fair hearing. If we can clear the air a bit, we might be able to engage in a conversation that allows the gospel to speak on its own behalf. In this first lesson, I share why I believe in “a faith worthy of our questions.” The sermon today is titled "A Faith Worthy Of Our Questions." It is the first installment in our "Worthy Faith" Series. The Scripture reading is from Exodus 18:13-15 (MSG). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on October 23, 2022.
