Taiwanese vibraphonist and percussionist Chien Chien Lu, along with Pittsburg, Pennsylvania native bassist Richie Goods, have crafted a sound that is both captivating and rhythmic. Their music draws from a rich tapestry of cultural influences including Taiwanese, American, and African-American traditions, especially within the jazz sub-culture. Chien Chien Lu and Richie Goods are dedicated to expanding their musical repertoire, creating a unique connection that resonates deeply with listeners. In the fall of 2024, Chien Chien Lu and Richie Goods visited Columbus, Ohio, where they met with students at Otterbein University and performed to a captivated full house audience. During their visit, they visited my studio, sharing compelling stories about their individual paths into jazz and the inception of their musical collaboration. Chien Chien Lu recounted her transition from playing classical music in Taiwan to exploring the creative latitude of jazz upon her relocation to the United States. She arrived in the US holding a master's degree in classical percussion but sought the unique expressions of jazz. While pursuing graduate studies in Philadelphia, Chien was introduced to Jeremy Pelt, one of today's leading trumpeters. Impressed by her talent, Pelt included Chien in his subsequent European tour and later featured her in his next album. At that time, Richie Goods was a member of Pelt's band. In 2017, Chien graduated with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts. It all then fell together. Richie Goods describes his journey into jazz through performing arts school in Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School. After graduating from the prestigious jazz program at Berklee College of Music, Richie moved to New York City, where he studied under jazz legends Ron Carter and Ray Brown. Richie worked extensively with jazz piano legend Mulgrew Miller for nine years, which provided opportunities to perform with other major jazz luminaries including Russell Malone, Lenny White, Louis Hayes, and Vincent Herring. His extensive discography includes Grammy award-winning and platinum albums by Alicia Keys and Common. Connected is a band jointly led by Richie Goods and Chien Chien Lu, and their latest recording is Connected vol. 1. This pandemic era-project was derived from frequent conversations Richie Goods and Chien Chien had about the Black Lives Matter movement and the unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to do a project that would unify people and invoke imagery of love and peace, says Richie. The result is a dynamic jazz group influenced by global sounds, which reflects the musical identities of Richie and Chien. Connected vol. 1, won "Best Instrumental Album" at the 34th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan. The playlist for this episode includes five recordings. They tap into their latest recording, Connected vol. 1 and Chien Chien Lu's first recording, The Path. Richie Goods produced The Path and Connected vol. 1. Ohio's system of higher education is reinventing itself for a new era in the state's history. Will schools be ready? Among the challenges, the number of U.S. high school graduates is expected to peak next year at about 3.5 million students before dropping 15% in the next four years, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, with profound implications for institutions of higher education. Additionally, the needs of key Ohio employers are always accelerating, creating growing pressure on schools to produce workers ready to enter an ever-evolving workforce, especially in technology and healthcare-related professions. Schools are also creating new ways to ensure students stay housed, fed, and that childcare resources are available to keep students with families enrolled and moving toward graduation. A college education remains a life-changing asset for graduates, with Axios reporting recent grads in 2023 ages 22-27 earned $24,000 more annually than their peers holding just a high school degree. With the help from our expert panelists, we explore how Ohio's higher education institutions are innovating to adapt to a changing educational and workforce landscape. Featuring panelists: Dr. John Comerford, President of Otterbein University Dr. David Harrison, President of Columbus State Community College Dr. Morakinyo A.O. This extraordinary and historic forum welcomes The Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu as we gather following the election to reconcile and reflect on the common goal of preserving democracy, upholding justice, and to re-commit to listening to one another in good faith and with open minds and hearts. The Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu, daughter of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, knew from early in life that the one thing she would never be is a priest. She has always said, “I have my father's nose, I do not want his job” but life had other plans… After years spent as a development consultant, educator and race and gender activist she accepted her call to ordained ministry. The challenges of growing black and female in apartheid South Africa have been the foundation of Reverend Tutu's life as an activist for human rights. Those experiences taught her that our whole human family loses when we accept situations of oppression, and how the teaching and preaching of hate and division injure us all. Featuring The Reverend Nontombi Naomi Tutu, Daughter of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu, and Priest Associate, All Saint's Episcopal, Atlanta, Georgia, and with moderator Colleen Marshall, Anchor, NBC4. Educators know mental health must be treated like physical health - it's a basic need that must be met for students to be able to successfully learn and grow in our schools. But, since even before the pandemic, there's been a growing mental health crisis among children. Dr. Ariana Hoet, executive clinical director for Nationwide Children's Hospital's On Our Sleeves program, joins the Ohio Education Association for this episode to discuss factors that contribute to the crisis, what can be done to support students in schools, and the resources available to help educators help kids. In this episode, we also hear some of the message and a new resolution from the Ohio House of Representatives that was shared with educators as part OEA's first-ever Public Education Matters Day celebrations across the state.IMPORTANT RESOURCES | Click here to learn more about On Our Sleeves, and check out some of the following resources for educators: GoNoodle: https://www.gonoodle.com/tags/L2nZb2/all-the-feels Teacher curriculums: https://www.onoursleeves.org/mental-wellness-tools-guides/educator-sign-up Sign up for teacher listserv: https://www.onoursleeves.org/sign-up (just click educator) Follow On Our Sleeves on Instagram at @onoursleevesofficial and On Our Sleeves on Facebook. That enthusiasm extends into her desire for making sure that people of all backgrounds are accepted and celebrated – a passion born from her own experience as an immigrant to the U.S. from Venezuela. Dr. Hoet works in Pediatric Primary Care where she serves primarily Latino and Somali immigrant children. The work of On Our Sleeves and Dr. Hoet helped draw U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy to Nationwide Children's in October of 2022 to discuss the county's growing pediatric mental health crisis. In panel discussions before central Ohio business executives at Nationwide Children's, and with hundreds of college students at Otterbein University, Dr. Hoet and Dr. Murthy spoke passionately about addressing often-misunderstood mental health challenges. Dr. Hoet is the proud mom of a toddler and enjoys family time, dancing, and Ohio State football. She is also involved in Latino community events, both personally and professionally. What she would tell her younger self in terms of taking the leap of faith and making the career change What you need to know about canning, pickling, and food preservation, the questions she gets asked the most, and baby steps to take to try it at home. Motherhood, entrepreneurship, and creativity. How she views all three under the same umbrella rather than as separate entities When fear is there to tell you something and show you what you care about, and what to do in response to fear, doubt, and the imposter syndrome. We talk a lot about tips, strategies, frameworks, and components of project-based experiences, but we don't talk a lot about mindsets. How do you develop the mindsets that allow for creativity, agility, uncertainty, and experiences that move in several directions? In this episode, Thompson Morrison and Kavita Tanna, Founders of Ustawi Movement Global expose us to a process that builds these mindsets in both students and teachers; changing them from compliant learners to creative geniuses. We peel back the layers of this process and speak with educator Linda Amici about the transformational results she has seen in her classroom. Through it, you will learn: Why agility and adaptability are the #1 future skills, and how to develop it in our learners A simple framework to transform compliant learners to creative powerhouses How to make learning a continual conversation and not a didactic mode of delivery How to use a learning process developed in real world industries like tech/software to guide experiences in our classrooms How to help our learners reach their creative potential Connect with Thompson Morrison: thompson@ustawimovement.global Connect with Kavita Tanna: Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook Connect with Linda Amici: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter Learn More about the DIG Framework: https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Experiment-reimagined-education-unleashed/dp/0578634392 Thompson's Bio: Thompson Morrison is the co-author of The Dayton Experiment, a book that tells a story of a five-year journey of reimagining the learning culture of a small rural school in Dayton, Oregon. A software executive deeply versed in the fast, iterative learning cycles that underpin Agile methodologies, he partnered with Jami Fluke, the principal of Dayton Middle School and High School, to reimagine the learning culture in order to unleash the creative genius of every student. The impact of Intel's two new massive semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Licking County, Ohio, will go far beyond the $20 billion investment itself. The two new plants – with more likely to follow – will generate tens of thousands of new jobs across Ohio and will in turn draw contractors and other high-profile manufacturers to Central Ohio. These new employees won't arrive alone: they're arrive with families in tow looking to make Central Ohio home. The impact means that Central Ohio's public infrastructure – transportation, parks, schools, water and sewer lines, and every kind of public service – will need to expand rapidly and to stay ahead of the growth. Chandler, Arizona, home to another Intel plant, had one high school before Intel moved in. It's now the second-largest school district in Arizona. Can Central Ohio's towns keep up with the region's exciting growth, and even stay ahead? Hear from the mayors of three key regional cities how each is planning for – and embracing – Central Ohio's high-growth future. The panelists are: Donald Barnard, Mayor of Johnstown, OH Laurie Jadwin, Mayor of Gahanna, OH Sloan Spalding, Mayor of New Albany, OH The host is Keary McCarthy, Executive Director of The Ohio Mayors Alliance and The Ohio Mayors Alliance Foundation This CMC forum was sponsored by GBQ and Otterbein University with support from the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. On this week's Outside the Oval, host Gavin Frick is joined by his high school teammates Luke Malone, who runs for the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Michael Gray, who runs for Otterbein University. Together, the three share stories from their time competing for Jonathan Alder High School in Plain City, Ohio, reminiscing in old times such as their freshman cross country and track season, favorite (and least favorite) memories from high school, and even their historic frisbee golf games. Luke and Michael also take the time to list their dream Ohio HS cross country lineup, while also nominating who they believe has excelled the most since graduating high school in Ohio. After spending much of their conversation looking back on old running stories, the group also spends time discussing the highs and lows of being a fan of Ohio sports teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Guardians, and Ohio State Buckeyes. This, and much more on this very special episode of Outside the Oval. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/outsidetheoval/support

In this episode we discuss: -The biggest barriers to having conversations about race in the workplace and beyond. -Why it is important (even though counterintuitive) to listen and show empathy for people we don't agree with, even those who we might fundamentally disagree with or even consider "racist." -Why persuasion is ineffective without empathy, understanding, and trust. -How Kwame mediates differences in perception about race (e.g., between individuals and police officers). -What to do when there is a disagreement about whether race "played a role" in a certain situation. -Moving beyond identity-based thinking to discover shared goals in a conversation (from the micro to macro). -Why debating the "facts" of a situation is ineffective unless there is a validation of people's experiences. -The compassionate curiosity framework: 1) acknowledge and validate emotions 2) get curious with compassion 3) joint problem solving Watch Kwame's TEDx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6Zg65eK9XU The American Negotiation Institute: https://www.americannegotiationinstitute.com/ Download the "How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race" Negotiation Guide: Follow Kwame on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kwamechristian/ Negotiate Anything Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/negotiate-anything/id1101679010 Watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/I3_mDF7gzhs Follow Dr. Goodman: Interested in bringing wellness to your workplace? He is the author of How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race: Practical Tools for Necessary Change in the Workplace and Beyond*. In this conversation, Kwame and I discuss how to begin a difficult conversation about race. We explore the key questions that each of us should ask ourselves so that we can determine in advance what we want to gain from a tough conversation. Finally, we look at the three critical things to say in the first 30 seconds that will help you start an important conversation that helps everybody move forward. Key Points It's hard for someone else to appreciate how much of a person's identity affects every other area of their lives until you've lived it. People explain away racism because they don't like it and don't want it to be true. Whether you think a conversation is about race or not, if it's about race for the other person then you're having a conversation about race. There questions to ask yourself before a conversation: What do I hope to accomplish in this conversation? Given what I know about them and the situation, what is likely to be their goal? What are three questions I can ask them that will help me to understand their position? Use situation, impact, and invitation as the starting point for a difficult conversation. Usually this is less than 30 seconds. “Naked facts” reduce the likelihood that someone will dispute the premise of what you are addressing. Many people in higher education recoil at the idea of merging institutions, and it's little wonder: in most such arrangements, one institution swallows the other, which virtually disappears. But that doesn't mean the alternative is for every college to remain an island unto itself. Recent events – last month's merger between Saint Joseph's University and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, and last week's news that Antioch University and Otterbein University are teaming up to create a new national system of nonprofit colleges and universities – make this an opportune time to revisit an April 2021 discussion about transformative cross-college collaborations at a time of constrained resources. The conversation includes John MacIntosh of SeaChange Capital Partners, a driving force behind the Transformational Partnerships Fund; Art Dunning, former president of Albany State University, who oversaw that institution's merger with Darton State College; and Sister Margaret Carney, president emerita of St. Bonaventure University, who offers a cautionary tale about a merger that didn't happen – and what went awry. Hosted by Inside Higher Ed Editor Doug Lederman.
On this week's Outside the Oval, host Gavin Frick is joined by Michael Gray, who runs at Otterbein University in Ohio, and together, they discuss Gavin's pride and joy - his Fantasy Cross Country league. Frick also continues his Division 1 Regional Previews for the upcoming season, covering the South Central Regional this week. At the end, Arkansas Razorback Nyah Hernandez joins the show and shares her decision to transfer from Kennesaw State to Arkansas, while also discussing her tremendous high school career and past two years at Kennesaw State. That, and a whole lot more, on this week's trip Outside the Oval.
