“Incomprehensible guttural noises”The HeptapodsArrival is as difficult a movie to discuss in the limited space of our show notes as it is a truly great work of modern science fiction filmmaking. It's also virtually impossible to discuss without spoilers. Heck, we had trouble cramming our discussion of the central concepts of the film into  One of director Denis Villeneuve's crowning cinematic achievements (and almost certainly the thing that made us all realize that he might be the only director who would be able to get Dune right on screen), Arrival is an alien invasion movie unlike any other, one in which the humans don't cope with our new and strange looking neighbors with aggression, but rather by using science and reasoning to understand and communicate with them. Imagine that!You might fancy yourself a wiseacre and suggest the very notion of science and reasoning “does not fly” given the state of the world these days, but let's set that cynicism aside for the moment and get at the heart of this week's topic. Because in order to understand the way these aliens (the heptapods, not to be confused with Hakeem's ongoing Planet of the Cephalopods pitch) communicate via bizarre and smoky glyphs, humans are able to change their perception of time itself. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.How many vintage science fiction authors won a Pulitzer Prize? Ray Bradbury never won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but received a Pulitzer Special Citation in 2007 for his impact on literature. The answer is three. Booth Tarkington, MacKinlay Kantor and Michael Shaara. Booth Tarkington is one of only four novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, along with William Faulkner, John Updike, and Colson Whitehead. Tarkington wrote only three short sci-fi stories. MacKinlay Kantor wrote eight short sci-fi stories and one science fiction novel If the South Had Won the Civil War released in 1961.Michael Shaara is the most well known of the three. Shaara was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1928. Before he began selling sci-fi for 2 cents a word in the 1950s he was a boxer and a police officer. He won his Pulitzer for his novel about the Battle of Gettysburg, The Killer Angels which won the award in 1975, and was showcased on the big screen in the 1993 movie Gettysburg starring Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen.Shaara also wrote the 1991 novel For Love of the Game which was made into the 1999 film with the same name starring Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston. But it all began back in 1952. He wrote two dozen short sci-fi stories and this was his first. He looks strange, but very intelligent, like a professor. His name is Mr. Grapheus, and he has come to New York to locate the Martian Embassy and the agents of the government of the planet Mars. An unimportant clerk, in an unimportant job, uses his Einiac to discover what the computers are up to! The story is based on the poem, "Revolt Of The Machines" by Stephen Vincent Benet. The script was previously used on "Dimension X" on June 10, 1951. The progam was rebroadcast as part of "Monitor" during December, 1974. + Based on the poem "Revolt of the Machines" by Stephen Vincent Benet. An unusual tale in which the machines of the world revolt. The tale starts off with men walking off a work site because a turbine starts up of its' own accord and swallows a man. "Dr. Grimshaw's Sanitarium". Take missing bodies in a mental hospital and add a mad scientist or two! Stir well for horror. The system cue has been deleted. The script was used previously on "Dimension X" on September 22, 1950 and subsequently on "Future Tense" during July, 1976 and on "Monitor" during March, 1974. This story is the same as the one originally broadcast on 22nd of September 1950. What you will hear transcribed in the next half hour represents either a magnificent hoax or the true explanation of the famous Grimshaw sanatorium scandal, which made the headlines back in 1947. The manuscript upon which this account is based was removed by the New York State Police from a fountain pen cover found in the doorway to Dr Grimshaw's study. It is the story of "Noisy" Rhysling, the blind space-going songwriter whose poetic skills rival Rudyard Kipling's. Heinlein (himself a medically retired U.S. naval officer) spins a yarn about a radiation-blinded, unemployable spaceship engineer crisscrossing the Solar System writing and singing songs. The story takes the form of a nonfiction magazine article.

Perigi's Wonderful Dolls is a 1955 science fiction short story written and adapted by George Lefferts for the radio drama series X Minus One. It was originally aired without commercials by NBC on June 5, 1955, and later rebroadcast on January 18, 1956. Comparisons have been raised between several aspects of this story and the Twilight Zone episode "Living Doll". However, having aired eight years before "Living Doll", "Perigi's Wonderful Dolls" is one of the first radio broadcasts to pioneer the killer toy horror genre.

X Minus One is an American half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955, to January 9, 1958, in various timeslots on NBC. Known for high production values in adapting stories from the leading American authors of the era, X Minus One has been described as one of the finest offerings of American radio drama and one of the best science fiction series in any medium. And the Moon Be Still and Bright An expedition to Mars finds all the Martians dead due to chickenpox brought to them by previous Earthmen expeditions. All the men except for one set about destroying Martian artifacts. 

Known for scaring the socks of countless Baby Boomers during the 1950s, Invaders From Mars tells the story of starstruck David MacLean, the young sole witness of aliens noisily landing in his backyard in the wee hours of the morning. His father goes to investigate but is dragged beneath the sand, only to reemerge as a stiff, cold-hearted version of his father he's never met. As more and more friends and family members are changing, David tries to get help, but it's too impossible to believe! With a little help from a sympathetic doctor, a brilliant scientist, and the US army, he confronts the alien, but is it enough to survive and save his parents?
