Bret Easton Ellis took 13 years to write The Shards. It's a horror novel. Or maybe it's an autobiography. In fact, it's both. The Shards is a fictionalized retelling of Mr. Ellis's 18th year. It tells the story of a group of superficially sophisticated teens have their lives shattered by a series of terrible events. It's 1981 Los Angeles and a local serial killer known only as The Trawler draws ever closer to Bret and his friends. He taunts them with grotesque threats and acts of violence. As Bret's obsession with the killer grows, he spirals into paranoia and isolation. This mesmerizing novel is a vivid and nostalgic fusion of fact and fiction at the edge of what's real and fantasy. Bret Easton Ellis is probably best known for his now-iconic book American Psycho (1991) and the highly memeable film that followed.Bret Easton Ellis was interviewed for the John Adams Institute by Dutch writer and critic Joost de Vries at Boom Chicago in January of 2023.Become a Member of the John Adams Subscribe to our newsletterSupport the show

They discuss who her comedy heroes are, how she started in the business and why she's finally left Twitter. With 150K followers on Instagram, Rosie has legions of fans who adore her outspoken, warm brand of humour but that doesn't stop the trolls abusing her and attacking her for being disabled. Rosie opens up about how that feels, how she's trying her best to represent 24% of the population and what she's doing to encourage greater representation. A clip from the Jimmy Kimmel show of ‘celebrities read mean tweets' reminds Rosie, Marina and Jemma that no one is safe when it comes to having a large platform!A great chat, peppered with lots of clips and a superb pudding from one of Rosie's heroes - the incredible Victoria Wood.Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcastPatreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcastYoutubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawlTwitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcastCreated and Produced by Jemma Forte & Marina PurkissEdited by Max Carrey

Salmon Wars Executive Producer and Host Cody McLaughlin is joined by David Bayes, a halibut charter boat captain our of Homer, Alaska and one of the men behind the wildly successful ‘STOP Alaskan Trawler Bycatch' Facebook Group that is a leading voice on the effort to reign in trawler bycatch. David, a small business owner and advocate for sustainable fishing practices, discusses the issue of trawl bycatch in Alaska and its impact on the state's fisheries. He explains how trawl bycatch, particularly of halibut and salmon, has led to significant cutbacks in the sport fishing industry and threatens the overall health of the ecosystem. David highlights the economic disparity between the trawl fleet, which generates billions of dollars in revenue but pays minimal taxes to the state, and other fishing sectors. He also emphasizes the indiscriminate nature of trawl fishing and the staggering amount of bycatch that is wasted each year. The conversation focuses on the impact of trawl fishing on salmon populations in Alaska and the need for stricter regulations. The main themes include the controversy surrounding chum salmon bycatch, the influence of the trawl fleet on fisheries management, the fear of speaking out against trawl fishing, the spread of misinformation by astroturf organizations, and potential policy solutions to mitigate the problem. Takeaways Trawl bycatch, particularly of halibut and salmon, has led to significant cutbacks in the sport fishing industry in Alaska. The trawl fleet generates billions of dollars in revenue but pays minimal taxes to the state, resulting in an economic disparity between different fishing sectors. Trawl fishing is indiscriminate and results in a staggering amount of bycatch that is wasted each year. The current management and regulations of trawl fishing prioritize economic gain over the health of the ecosystem and the sustainability of fish populations. Trawl fishing has a significant impact on salmon populations in Alaska, particularly through chum salmon bycatch. The trawl fleet has a strong influence on fisheries management, leading to loose regulations and conflicts of interest. There is a fear among fishermen and affiliated businesses of speaking out against trawl fishing due to potential repercussions. Astroturf organizations funded by the trawl industry spread misinformation and slander against those advocating for stricter regulations. Policy solutions to address the issue include setting stricter bycatch limits, increasing observer coverage, and banning bottom trawling. The Trawler by James Brendan Connolly audiobook. The Trawler is a short story revolving around the trying life of a group of bank fishermen based in Gloucester. Skipper Hugh Glynn worked his men hard; some said too hard, and Arthur Snow was one who had paid the ultimate price. Arthur's close friend Simon Kippen decided he'd ask to take the place of his fallen friend aboard Hugh Glynn's vessel as a dory mate, and from there we have a tale of the open seas between Gloucester and Newfoundland where perhaps only the names and locations have changed from the countless stories of similar nature; the key being that this one, however, is first hand.

Vor 70 Jahren: Essen am 11. Mai 1952.
