On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about what they learned from last week's USC assistant football coach media brunch, where six offensive and six defensive assistants sat down with the media for an hour, answering questions about how spring football went and what Trojan fans can expect from their respective position groups in the future. The USC football staff is a great mix of young, energetic coaches like cornerbacks coach Trovon Reed and inside receivers coach Chad Savage and older, veteran coaches like linebackers coach Rob Ryan. The guys talk about some of the highlights from what they heard from the staff and why they are optimistic that this group of coaches can turn things around in 2025. Coach Hyde also discusses the current state of USC football recruiting, with the Trojans building up a massive 2026 class that currently ranks No. 1 in the country. The focus has been on local prospects and it has paid off, with 27 commitments and counting including the impressive recent pledge from five-star offensive tackle Keenyi Pepe. They finish the show talking about the recent decision by head coach Lincoln Riley to let Director of Football Sports Performance Bennie Wylie go, taking USC's strength and conditioning program in another direction. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together taking a detailed look at USC's quarterback situation and the potential national QB shakeup with Nico Iamaleava and Tennessee parting ways. The Trojans are in good shape with returning starter Jayden Maiava, five-star freshman Husan Longstreet and former five-star prospect Sam Huard occupying Luke Huard's quarterback meetings, but should head coach Lincoln Riley look to get in on Iamaleava? Coach Hyde and Ryan give their thoughts on the entire QB picture for USC and what this stunning NIL development means for the future of college football. Coach Hyde also discusses who he feels is the current face of the Trojan football program, what areas he feels this team has improved on this off-season, if the offensive philosophy has or should change going forward, how tough will the Big Ten be in 2025 and why is spring football such a big secret all of a sudden. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the highly anticipated start to spring football 2025, where head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans have 15 practices to acclimate the new players and coaches in preparation for the upcoming season. As a former division one head football coach, Hyde talks about what he would like to see this team get done in the spring in order to get the program going in the right direction, competing for conference championships and a spot in the College Football Playoffs. USC lost a lot of close games last season, including five where the Trojans had a fourth quarter lead. Coach Hyde talks about what he feels this team needs to do in order to be prepared for the end of game scenarios, turning those close losses into victories (and ensuring the game isn't close against overmatched opponents). Coach Hyde also gives his thoughts on the new-look roster with some prominent names missing and some promising new faces roaming the sidelines. From a deep and talented running backs room to a bigger and more athletic defensive line, the guys discuss where they think this team will be better on the field and where they feel they still need to improve. He also talks about the traditional spring game being removed and what Riley had to say about the reasoning behind it. CLICK HERE for 50% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together giving their thoughts on the major moves the USC athletic department has been making with the coaching and personnel staffs. Over the past two seasons the Trojans have struggled to a 13-11 record so with these staff moves they hope is that head coach Lincoln Riley has all the help he needs to build a championship roster that can be coached up to make a run at the College Football Playoffs. The guys start off talking about the personnel side, with USC hiring away Notre Dame general manager Chad Bowden to come to Troy in the same role. Coach Hyde wants to know what his job description will entail and how much say he has over the roster working with Riley. Bowden also has some help coming with Zaire Turner hired as the new assistant AD of recruiting Operations and Dre Brown as the executive director of scouting and personnel. On the coaching staff side Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on USC keeping and extending defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, bringing in NFL veteran Rob Ryan as the assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach, Chad Savage as tight ends and inside receivers coach and Trovon Reed as the new cornerbacks coach. The guys talk about how the new staff members will help the Trojans on the recruiting trail, especially in Southern California where USC has fallen short the past couple of classes. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together giving their thoughts on USC's 35-31 victory over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl. he Trojans finished the season with a 7-6 record, going 4-5 in Big Ten play and bookending the season with victories over SEC opponents in Las Vegas, LSU in the opener and the Aggies to close it out. Coach Hyde has some strong opinions regarding the performance of the team in Vegas, including the play of quarterback Jayden Maiava. The young signal caller had a rough start to the game and made some ill-advised throws that led to a trio of interceptions, but he also showed great leadership late in the game helping the Trojans complete their 17-point comeback win. He also talks about some of the adjustments the USC defense made that led to three-straight stops in the second half, including a short field Aggie possession following a Maiava pick. He also has thoughts on how Lincoln Riley and the team handled themselves on the sidelines at Allegiant Stadium. Now that the 2024 season has come to a close, Coach Hyde looks ahead to what he feels the prospects for the future are and where he feels this program needs to add talent from the NCAA Transfer Portal. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together giving their end of the season evaluation following the Trojans 49-35 loss to Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde is not happy with the way the season played out and really wants to see head coach Lincoln Riley do a detailed evaluation of his entire program this off-season, from his coaching philosophies to his staff, players and even how he interacts with boosters, the fans and the media. The guys start off talk about how this game played out, in similar fashion to the other losses the Trojans have endured in 2024. Coach Hyde wants to see more from this offense than throwing fade routes, a strategy that worked most of the game but then cost USC late with Notre Dame's game-sealing pick-6 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Coach says Riley is reluctant to run the football, thinks this team shouldn't be throwing it 50 times a game and when they do pass, he wants to see more variety by taking advantage of the middle of the field, something Riley avoided for most of the game against the Irish. Coach also wants to see improved line play, a lesson can be learned just from watching how Notre Dame dominated the trenches Saturday. On his season evaluation, Coach Hyde agrees with what some of the former players like Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley and Jake Olson have said on social media, this team doesn't have an identity and they should be better than they are in year three of a rebuild. Coach Hyde also feels like if the team continues to lose close games, that means it is more than just the players, it is the coaching. You can have bad fortune and lose game or two late, but not half of the schedule with most of the losses coming against lesser talented teams. Coach Hyde also talks about quarterback Miller Moss entering the transfer portal on Monday and what he would have liked to have seen for a better sendoff for the lifelong Trojan. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing the late Saturday night clash in the Rose Bowl between crosstown rivals USC and UCLA. The stakes for this game weren't as high as both programs would have hoped, but a chance to play in the postseason, the Victory Bell and of course Los Angeles bragging rights were still on the line for the Trojans and the Bruins. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on USC's 19-13 victory over UCLA, evaluating how quarterback Jayden Maiava performed and how the Trojan offense did overall against the Bruins defense. He also goes in-depth on the performance of D'Anton Lynn's defense, holding UCLA to just 13 points and denying all three 4th down conversion attempts for the Bruins. The now bowl eligible Trojans have one tough test remaining, a visit from No. 5 Notre Dame Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. The guys talk about the opportunity for USC to match last year's regular season total of 7 wins and potentially knock the Fighting Irish out of the College Football Playoffs. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together with the rare opportunity to talk about a big Trojan football victory, following USC's 28-20 win over Nebraska Saturday afternoon in the Coliseum. Both teams came into the game desperate to get a win, with the Huskers losing three-straight and the Trojans dropping four of the last five. The victory brings USC's record to 5-5 with a win over rival UCLA in the Rose Bowl or Notre Dame in the Coliseum necessary to qualify for a post season game. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on how USC played following the bye week and what he liked and didn't like from the offense after head coach Lincoln Riley inserted UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava as the starting quarterback. Maiava started off slow but then got things going, finishing with three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, but also an ugly pick-6 and fumble deep in USC territory. Hyde talks about his arm strength and his ability to extend plays and pick up yardage with his legs, and how all of that helped Woody Marks and the run game get going. Defensively this USC defense did its job against a struggling Nebraska offense. The Trojans had five tackles for loss including two sacks and picked off a pair of Dylan Raiola passes including the final play of the game. Coach talks about what he saw from that side of the ball and how that can translate to the final two games of the season. CLICK HERE for 30% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde have a chance to talk about a Trojan football victory after USC took care of business by beating Rutgers 42-20 Friday night in the Coliseum. Coach feels like the Men of Troy needed this win badly after losing three straight and sporting a losing record for the first time in Lincoln Riley's head coaching career. The Scarlet Knights were an overmatched opponents and both teams were dealing with significant injuries, but USC did what it needed to do and put up good numbers that the program can build upon heading into the final four games of the regular season. It was a unique Friday sports night in Los Angeles with just a few miles of freeway separating USC hosting Rutgers, the Lakers hosting the Phoenix Suns and the Dodgers hosting the New York Yankees. Coach talks about all that was going on in the City of Angels and the part the Trojans played in the historic night. Coming out of that game, players were smiling again and that is very important for the psyche of a young student athlete. They could go to class on Monday with their heads up and there is more joy in the locker room and at the football facilities knowing that the team got an important victory. Following the win, the fans seem a little more subdued and less enthusiastic, likely a combination of the caliber of opponent, the late Friday kickoff and the lost expectations of what could have been a promising season after USC beat LSU in the opener. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are once again trying to make sense of this USC football program that continues to find unique ways to lose a football game. This week the Trojans had a struggling Maryland squad on the ropes with a 14-point lead in the 3rd quarter and USC driving to put the game away. But as we have seen in all of the Trojans four losses this season, things went bad late and the Terrapins were able to pull off the upset and the fans that were left in the stadium stormed the field. Coach Hyde talks about some of the questionable decisions head coach Lincoln Riley has made over his two and a half years and how those errors are coming back to bite the Trojans and contribute to all of these losses. His first major issue is the lack of recruiting in Southern California and how that has contributed to the depth issues for this team. Coach Hyde knows that some of the top high school programs and prospects are right in USC's back yard and he wants to see Riley and his staff be much more active showing their faces on campus and doing their best to keep all of this top talent at home, similar to what Pete Carroll did. Coach also wants to see USC run the ball more and really impose their will with a physical ground attack. After going up 14 points against Maryland, that was time for the Trojans to start lining up and running to take control of the game, run clock and destroy the will of the opposition. Instead USC threw the ball 9 out of 10 times and relied on receivers making miracle catches, allowing the Terps to get back in the game. And he would like to see Riley be more of a head coach and less of an offensive coordinator. At this stage he needs to oversee all aspects of this team, offense, defense and special teams, to make sure the program finishes games the right away. With so much emphasis on the offensive play calling, Coach Hyde feels there isn't enough time dedicated to all of his other head coaching duties. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together and sounding like a broken record, with USC once again losing a very winnable game in the final seconds, this time in overtime 33-30 at the hands of No. 4 Penn State in the Coliseum. It was another exciting weekend of college football with two games on the West Coast that felt like the Rose Bowl, USC hosting Penn State and Oregon hosting Ohio State in Eugene. The Ducks got their signature win for the season, taking down the Buckeyes and the Trojans had their opportunity to take down a top-5 team and make a statement in the Big Ten, but fell short in the end. Coach Harvey Hyde liked the way the team came out and ran the ball and played good defense against Penn State, allowing only a pair of field goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. But he wasn't sure why head coach Lincoln Riley got away from what was working after halftime, throwing 8 passes through the first 9 plays and allowing the Nittany Lions to come back and tie the game fairly quickly. In a game with two great traditions going at it, USC was not just in a position to win but had a chance to blow PSU out, but the Trojans helped out the Lions by getting away from what was working and helping the Lions in their comeback bid. At the end of the day, Riley is one of the highest paid coaches in the country and Coach Hyde thinks that losing three of your last four games is not acceptable, whether they were all close at the end or not. This team has had many opportunities for someone to make a play down the stretch and in the three losses no one was able to break through and do so. Saturday the players played hard, Coach Hyde could tell they wanted to win, but when it came down to it they just were not able to execute. Coach Hyde was glad to see Riley take responsibility after the game, he just now wants to see them take the next step and figure out how to walk away from winnable games with a victory. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about another disturbing loss for the Trojans, falling on the road to 24-17 to Minnesota. Coach Hyde has a lot of thoughts on this game, one that USC needed to and should have won if it had any belief that this team was capable of competing for a spot in the College Football Playoffs. Coach Hyde thinks that this team needs to make adjustments to survive in the world of Big Ten football, as there are many differences from what USC is seeing now as opposed to what it saw back in the Pac-12. It starts with being more physical in every aspect of the game, and while the Trojans have improved in that area, there is still a lot more work to do. There are more ‘bring your lunch pail to work' games in this conference and USC needs to be ready for contests turning into a rock fight, with fewer possessions and blocking and tackling taking precedence over a finesse passing game. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC getting its first ever Big Ten conference victory, taking down Wisconsin 38-21 in the Coliseum. After a slow start and the worst half of football of the season that put the Trojans in a 21-10 hole, USC pitched a shutout after halftime and outscored the Badgers 28-0 on its way to a 17-point victory in a game that looked very much in doubt. Coach talked about the need for the Men of Troy to avoid the bad starts like what we saw on Saturday with three first half turnovers, uncharacteristically poor tackling a poor efforts on punt returns. If the Trojans can just avoid beating themselves, the schedule sets up well enough that the wins will come and USC should be in the College Football Playoff picture at the end of the season. After beating themselves in the first half against Wisconsin, Lincoln Riley and his troops cleaned things up and took control of the game. He loves the bend but don't break attitude of the defense that has shut out the opposition in 6 of 12 quarters and only allowed 82 yards in the second half against the Badgers. He feels the pass blocking needs some work and he wants to see some adjustments made to help Moss in this offense that seems more suited for a highly athletic quarterback. He also wants to see better communication on the punt returns, saying the team needs to generate positive yards and be smart with the choice of returning the ball or not. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about what was an extremely disappointing loss for the Trojans first every Big Ten conference game, a 27-24 defeat at the hands of Michigan in the Big House. Coach loved the setting for this USC vs. Michigan game, reminding of some of the classic Rose Bowls of the past between these two blueblood programs. The weather was great, there were 110 thousand people in the stands and it was an absolute perfect setting for the Trojans first ever Big Ten conference game. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about this Trojan football team improving to 2-0 on the young season following the 48-0 home opening victory over Utah State late Saturday night in the Coliseum. The Coach talks about what he liked on the offensive side of the ball, especially how the run game finally got going. On defense he thinks the No. 1 thing is how improved the tackling has been and that was a major part in the Trojans pitching a shutout against the Aggies. The guys also take a look at what USC needs to do during the bye week to get prepared for the Trojans first Big Ten conference game, a tough road trip to a Michigan squad that is licking its wounds this week after getting pushed around by Texas. This game looks much more winnable than it did just a couple of weeks ago, so Lincoln Riley and his staff need to prepare this team for a business trip to Ann Arbor. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together recapping USC's spring game that featured the defense getting the better of the offense by a score of 43-28 in a modified scoring system. With D'Anton Lynn at the helm, the new-look USC defense secured four interceptions including a 100-yard pick-six and three-straight drives ending in interceptions in the first half. Coach Hyde thought the Coliseum looked great on Saturday afternoon with beautiful weather, turf in pristine condition and everything looking perfect. When the game started he was happy to see the offense huddle up to get the plays in with helmet communication now allowed per NCAA rules. He wasn't as happy to see the game not feature live tackling and instead defenders would "thud" the offensive players instead of tackling them to the ground. Coach doesn't feel you can get a true game speed evaluation when there is no live tackling and you can't see if the tackling has improved at all because you just aren't running at a full speed pace like you would in a real game. Overall he felt the defense played more to defend the pass than the run since there was no tackling allowed and the offensive play calling was more skewed towards passing than running. The secondary and linebackers were able to play more coverage and so it makes it hard to evaluate their performance when they aren't as worried about coming up to support the run. Coach liked how the offensive line blocked in pass protection, but again it just wasn't a real life game situation when you aren't including the physicality of the run game. The secondary did stand out with four interceptions and coach loved how they were always around the football. It just looked like the players were better coached, not leaving guys wide open and forcing the offense to make contested catches. CLICK HERE for 50% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the latest news and notes from USC football spring practices and on the basketball side with head coach Andy Enfield leaving for SMU and the USC women's basketball team making a run to the Elite 8 with a potential Final Four appearance on the line. The guys start off the show talking about the breaking news that Enfield was departing from USC and taking over the SMU basketball program, leaving a future Big Ten job for a future ACC job. Coach thinks that this move is good for both sides, with Enfield getting an opportunity to start fresh with a big contract and USC able to move on from someone who recruited at a higher level than he won and try to raise the basketball program to the next level. They also talk about the women's team where head coach Lindsay Gottlieb and star freshman Juju Watkins have advanced to the Elite 8 with a chance to take down UConn and go to the school's first Final Four since the 1980's. Coach thinks the women are catching fire and there is no reason why they can't get back to the glory days of the program where they were competing for national championships. The guys shift gears back to football, talking about the renewed emphasis on the defensive side of the ball from head coach Lincoln Riley. Coach Hyde likes the moves that have been made for the defensive staff and how the players, especially the defensive linemen, have transformed their bodies and even the push to recruit more highly ranked defensive prospects, but he wants to know why now? What changed? Hyde thinks that it is great Riley is getting more involved in the defense because as the head coach, it isn't the defensive coordinator's defense, it's yours. The head coach has to be a part of the entire program, not just the offense, and Coach Hyde loves that this is happening now for the Trojans. The days of just outscoring people are over, USC is going to try and stop some people as well. Better late than never. They also talk about a couple of offensive additions, with a commitment from three-star 2024 Tustin (Calif.) walk-on quarterback Jack Stupin and three-star running back from Southlake (Texas) Carroll Riley Wormley. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the recent USC football press conference where head coach Lincoln Riley introduced the new members of the defensive coaching staff, defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn, defensive line coach Eric Henderson, linebackers coach Matt Entz and secondary coach Doug Belk. Coach Hyde starts off the show talking about how impressed he was with these new coaches and thought the press conference was the best one USC has had since Riley arrived at Troy. He loved how they were able to talk about their coaching philosophies as well as why they decided to leave good jobs and become a Trojan assistant coach. The coaches all showed great football knowledge and provided honest answers about the potential of the defense while embracing the tradition of the program. Coach Hyde felt it was enlightening to hear four coaches talk about their players and what they are going to try and accomplish. Riley made a statement when he went out and hired a very qualified group of coaches with great defensive minds. Coaches that are not afraid to address the issues they face and how they want to teach defensive fundamentals that will create a team defense, not a bunch of individuals. They also recognized that having a better defense isn't enough, they have to be able to give the offense looks in practice and make that side of the ball better as well. Coach Hyde feels that this defense will be fundamentally stronger with players understanding their assignments and the overall schemes better. They will be better coached with the proper knowledge to play and perform at high levels. Players will be taught and they will know what they need to do, enabling them to perform at full speed. Lynn said it best, explaining how he wants to teach the basics and start slow, allowing every player on the team to know what is expected of them. He also feels it is important to fit the scheme to the personnel and not the other way around. CLICK HERE for 30% OFF an annual VIP membership to USCFootball.com! On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about all of the latest news and notes surrounding the USC football program. The traditional signing day will not be very exciting for the Trojans but there have been some moves on the staff plus Coach Hyde talks a lot about what head coach Lincoln Riley needs to do to get the program ready to join the Big Ten. The guys start off talking about the staff with Kliff Kingsbury reportedly withdrawing his name from the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator job. USC also added a new defensive analyst to the staff with Skyler Jones coming over from Oregon to work alongside defensive line coach Eric Henderson as a defensive analyst. Jones was with the Ducks last year and worked with Henderson at the Rams in 2022. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on the high profile coaches added to the defensive staff and how the power dynamic could work. Coach also gives his thoughts on the Big Ten and SEC coming to an agreement and how this could eventually set up its own association that would take over some of the NCAA duties and govern the powers of college football separately. Who does Coach Hyde think would be the best person to run the new organization? None other than former Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Looking ahead to joining the Big Ten conference Coach Hyde talks about the landscape with powers like Ohio State and Michigan, the dropoff after those two programs and how the Pac-12 could stack up top to bottom with the Big Ten. He feels that USC needs to go in without being intimidated and have confidence the Trojans can compete like they have in the Rose Bowl against Big Ten powers over the years. Coach also had a good idea for a way Riley can get some good intel on his new conference, befriend new Charges head coach Jim Harbaugh. Coach thinks Riley and Harbaugh can exchange ideas and help each other now that he is in the NFL and in the same city. They end the show with Coach Hyde talking about UNLV transfer quarterback Jayden Maiava and how he should be a good fit in the offense as a backup to Miller Moss. Coach says he is big, strong, talented but not ready to play in the Big Ten yet. He has a lot of potential but feels USC needs to bring him along slowly. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about all of the latest news and notes surrounding the USC football program. It's mid December and the Trojan football team is gearing up for an important Holiday Bowl clash with Louisville from the ACC, but right now most of the focus is on the future with major changes happening to both the coaching staff and the roster. After head coach Lincoln Riley fired defensive coordinator Alex Grinch with two games left in the regular season, the writing was on the wall that this defensive staff was going to get a major makeover. Riley started off with the bold move to hire UCLA DC D'Anton Lynn to come down the 10 Freeway and take over as USC's defensive coordinator. Next Riley targeted Matt Entz, the head coach of North Dakota State who won multiple national championships at the FCS level, to coach linebackers. The latest move was to snag Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk to join the staff and coach the Trojans secondary, taking the place of Donte Williams who is heading to Georgia for the same role. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on all of these additions to the staff and if he feels these coaches could help make the Trojans a contender heading into the Big Ten next season. There have also been some major attrition on the roster heading into the bowl game with former five-stars like quarterback Malachi Nelson, running back Raleek Brown and cornerback Domani Jackson entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. With Nelson in the portal Riley needs to bring in a quarterback and right now the favorite in the clubhouse appears to be Will Howard from Kansas State, who took an official visit to USC over the weekend. The Trojans also added former Oregon State safety Akili Arnold and linebacker Easton Mascarenas-Arnold to the roster along with Vanderbilt defensive lineman Nate Clifton. Coach Hyde says they need to take the bowl game seriously to end the season on a high note, unlike what happened last year. With opt-outs and transfers, Hyde really wants team players out there who can put the team first so they can play like hell and get a much needed victory. He's also very happy for Miller Moss getting his first start. Moss has been loyal Trojan, he wants to be at USC and deserves this start. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 38-20 loss to UCLA in the Coliseum, closing out what was a once promising college football season in the most disappointing way possible. The Trojans were preseason ranked No. 5 and started off winning their first six games and didn't trail for the first five. Since then USC lost to both of its rivals in uncompetitive games, went 1-5 and once again sported one of the worst defenses in the country. There was great anticipation heading into the 2023 college football season, but it ended up being very difficult to endure and ended on a terrible note with an uncompetitive loss to UCLA. Coach Hyde says the party's over now, Santa Claus didn't bring any gifts and there is no easy way to make sense of it all. He feels major changes are needed and they are needed immediately, not just with the defensive coordinator but how the entire coaching staff is structured, how recruiting is handled, the overall football philosophy, the entire package. Losing to the Bruins and gaining only three rushing yards is inexcusable. It was the last chance for this team to have some positivity heading into the bowl game and while most Trojan fans anticipated a victory over this UCLA squad that had scored 17 points total in its last two games, that didn't happen. No bragging rights. No Victory Bell. No momentum going into a bowl game. The defense obviously needs fixing but there are issues on offense and special teams as well. Coach feels the team was dominated on both lines and that is where football games are won, in the trenches. Caleb Williams is a special player but there was far too much pressure on him to succeed. He needs help from the line, the skill players and the coaching staff since he isn't forced to do everything on his own. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 36-27 loss to Oregon in Eugene, another disappointing effort against a tough opponent. The Trojans were outgained 552 to 379 and Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went bananas, throwing for 412 yards and four touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes. Oregon was able to pressure Caleb Williams early and often, generating three sacks and one turnover while USC seemingly couldn't get close to Nix with no sacks and only two tackles for loss in the game. With the Trojans having lost an incredible four of their last five games, Coach Hyde thinks head coach Lincoln Riley needs to look into the mirror and see what changes need to be made in order for this program to eventually be championship caliber. This is the first time in Riley and Williams' careers that they are out of championship contention during the regular season, so how the team responds to that against rival UCLA this weekend will be interesting for sure. Coach Hyde saw Oregon play at a high intensity level and that combined with the amount of talent the Ducks had on the field is hard to beat. He wants to USC get there both with talent, toughness and intensity, but he just isn't seeing it right now. He is seeing more "me" attitude than "team" attitude and that has an impact on the entire program. Trojan fans are not happy right now and Coach Hyde thinks the players and coaches are not as well. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing yet another disappointing defensive effort for the Trojans, this time a 52-42 loss to No. 5 Washington in the Coliseum. During the show as Ryan and Coach talked about the poor defensive performance news broke that defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had been fired, so they talk about that breaking news at the end of the episode. The Huskies were able to score on 8 of their 10 drives including 7 touchdowns for a ridiculous average of 5.2 points per drive. Coach Hyde feels it was a great crowd there for Homecoming and the offense scored enough to win the game, but the defense was questionable in every aspect of the game. Coach wants to know if this defense is even capable of getting a stop. He doesn't think all of the best players are playing and by now you should know which players can play and which cant. He's questioning the defensive philosophy where they can't even line up correctly or respond to offensive shifts, leaving the defense confused with huge gaps outside for opposing backs to run through. Coach would love to see head coach Lincoln Riley step in and start coaching on the defensive side and allow Kliff Kingsbury to take over and run the offense. The defense keeps doing the same thing and nothing changes and there are so many gaps in coverage that Coach said it looks like they are only playing with 9 guys out there. Coach says the kids are playing hard but with the combination of everything that is going wrong, the defense is simply horrible. With the loss the Trojans fell out of the AP Poll top-25 for the first time in the Riley era. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was a fitting end to a longstanding rivalry with Cal, a 50-49 Trojan victory that featured an on-field protest that delayed the start of the game, an untimed down after halftime before the third quarter started and a spectacular two-point conversion pass defense that sealed the victory for USC. Coach Hyde talks about the lack of discipline he has seen on this team, from penalties (11 for 101 yards for USC) to missed assignments to lack of attention to detail, and how that is going to need to change to have a chance at winning any of the remaining three games on the schedule. Players need to perform the assignment they are given and coaches need to stick with what is working and not get away from successful strategies. Coach Hyde wants to see more consistency and concentration from everyone in the program, from the players on the field to everyone on the sidelines. On that untimed down played before the start of the third quarter, Coach Hyde says he has never saw a play like in all his years coaching and watching college football. He also said that USC has the skill players to be a great offense with one of the top running backs in the country in MarShawn Lloyd, of of the top quarterbacks in Caleb Williams and great receivers, but doesn't see any identity in the offense right now. Coach wants to see things be more balanced to make it harder on opposing defenses instead of the Trojans are making it harder on themselves. On defense Coach feels like those turnovers were the key to getting the win. Somehow the defense made Fernando Mendoza look like Aaron Rodgers. There were gaping holes in the first half for the run game with guys taking the long gap. Second half was better with Eric Gentry playing better and Bear Alexander returning. Too many penalties on the secondary players. Coach says that the special teams problems are all about discipline, staying in lanes, when to run it out, not trying to be a star just go by the rules of where you are on the field. All of these mistakes in the kicking game are not acceptable and coach says you will lose games when you can't do those little things on special teams. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was an inexcusable Trojan loss to the Utes in the Coliseum. Utah came in without their star quarterback or best pass catcher and still was able to put up 482 yards of offense on the USC defense, the Utes highest total of the season. Safety Sione Vaki got whatever he wanted in the passing game, torching the Trojans for nearly 150 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Bryson Barnes had his best game of the season including a 26-yard run that set up the game winning field goal. Coach Hyde and Ryan talk about how week after week this USC defense allows opponents to accomplish new heights and achieve high water marks, something that simply shouldn't be happening to a team with championship aspirations. Coach Hyde thinks this team is simply unsound on defense and they are asking players to do impossible tasks like having rush end Braylan Shelby to rush the passer but also cover the speedy Vaki on a wheel route of of the backfield. That is not sound football. Hyde says there is always a breakdown somewhere and it is due to bad discipline not only on defense, but from what he's seeing throughout the football program. You never want to beat yourself and with bad discipline USC did exactly that on the final drive for Utah. Coach Hyde thinks Lincoln Riley is a great playcaller with an amazing track record but right now quarterback Caleb Williams isn't making the plays he was last season. Coach thinks that defenses have adjusted and that Riley needs to as well to help Williams have the kind of success he had last season. He doesn't think Riley believes in the run game and he wants this team to be more physical to become a championship level team. Overall Coach Hyde feels bad for the fan base, a group of loyal Trojans who want to be proud of, not embarrassed because of, the product out on the field. With all of the problems on this USC football team, its hard for fans to be proud of what they are seeing. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what turned out to be the largest margin of defeat for the Trojans during the Lincoln Riley era, a 48-20 beatdown at the hands of Notre Dame. A huge factor in the loss was the fact that USC turned the ball over five times, including a career high three interceptions for Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, and surrendered a kickoff return for a touchdown. Coach Harvey Hyde talks about how this was an extremely difficult weekend for USC fans, seeing their team go down hard on a national stage in a historic rivalry with thousands of Trojans making the trip to South Bend. He also said it was embarrassing for fans to watch how this team played, getting dominated in all three phases but especially the offense and special teams units. It was a painful experience and there is no time for the team to lick its wounds with Utah coming into the Coliseum this weekend. The Coach talks about how the USC offense couldn't get anything going, with the offensive line struggling making Williams look uncomfortable and a run game that just couldn't generate consistent production. Notre Dame played a lot of man defense and limited the separation for USC's wide receivers, making it even tougher for Williams to find someone while under pressure. Defensively the squad did play better, but it was against a more limited Fighting Irish offense. Special teams were a major issue and one that doesn't seem to be improving as the season advances.
