The Cop28 climate summit concluded in Dubai last week with a deal that some have described as ‘historic' and others merely ‘incremental'. This caps off a year when the Albanese government pushed ahead with significant climate and environmental reforms, all while remaining the world's third-biggest fossil fuel exporter. Garcia, who was a co-author of the plan, says the removal of the jobseeker supplement and jobkeeper have disproportionally affected rural communities. Garcia explains that supermarkets have squeezed farmers by paying low prices for produce; this has forced many farmers to look for off-farm work, including in mining and gas, which are damaging to farmland. The impact of Coal Seam Gas extraction on the local economy in Chinchilla has been devastating. The rural and regional recovery plan calls for subsidies, a revival of a 'land army' system that facilitates seasonal farm workers being taken to towns needing workers and being paid at least award wages; the nationalisation of the supermarket chains under community control; and the re-establishment of publicly owned rural banks and insurers offering cheap finance and insuranceYou can listen to the individual interview here.

This week we're talking about something not many people know about, which is the massive greenhouse emissions being released from the fossil fuel - gas - and LNG (liquefied natural gas). Those emissions are so big that in one major oil and gas producing area – the Permian Basin in the U.S. - they have likely wiped out all energy emission reductions since 2010 for the whole country. If only 3% of gas produced is leaked, gas is worse for the climate than coal. Yet it's more than 3%. BP says it's 3.2%. And a recent study of the Permian Basin found that 3.7% was lost in the production process. What's this telling us? This is the gas industry's 'Volkswagen' moment. Bruce Robertson is IEEFA's LNG and gas analyst, and he talks about the extent of the gas industry's emissions in this latest podcast. Further reading: Bruce Robertson.   Dayne Pratzky   Listen in as Dayne talks about why he’s called The Frackman, coal seam gas mining, why we all matter more than we know and how to be bold, brave and proud when becoming an activist.   TIFF and Human Rights Watch co-present the 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival in Toronto, March 30 to April 7.   For more information about the festival go here.   Watch the Trailer Here.   And find out more info about the film here.   Synopsis   Dayne Pratzky loved the quiet life on his rural block in central Queensland. Then the coal seam gas company arrived, and that changed everything. Legally he couldn't stop them mining his land, but that didn't mean he wouldn't fight. And so began a David and Goliath battle against a $200 Billion industry. Along the way he found love, tragedy and triumph. Frackman is like no other Australian film. It aims to spark a broad national conversation about the risks of our headlong rush into massive coal seam gas development. Can we imagine any other issue that would bring together the likes of Alan Jones and Bob Brown? See it and find out why. Biography Dayne Pratzky is a leading figure in the anti-Coal Seam Gas movement in Australia. Dayne starts his campaign of resistance when the Queensland Gas Company (QGC) begins CSG operations in his community of Tara, Queensland (near Chinchilla). The Tara locals recruit veteran campaigner Drew Hutton to the cause, who then founds the vast Lock the Gate Alliance.   Outraged that gas companies are demanding access to their land, and deeply troubled by the terrible health affects they believe are being caused by the industry, Dayne and his neighbours begin to fight back.   Dayne is an ‘accidental’ activist, having had no previous involvement with environmental campaigning. “I was a roo shooting, pig hunting kind of bloke,” he says. “I’m the most unlikely environmentalist in the world. But when they force their way onto your land and destroy your community, you have no choice but to fight back.”   Dayne discovers early on that the techniques used to extract unconventional gas buried deep beneath the ground have many potential risks. There is a significant chance that the region’s water supply will be contaminated, and kids in his estate are getting sick. Deeply concerned, Dayne startss Gasileaks, a citizen-run watchdog for CSG operations. He is invited to Washington to address a huge rally of Americans opposed to ‘fracking’ and his campaigning takes him to Wyoming and Colorado, investigating the disastrous consequences of fracking in America. “They’re ten years further down the track in the US, and what we are facing at home is an environmental catastrophe that will rival the asbestos disaster,” says Dayne.   In the course of fighting for his community, Dayne sometimes skirts the law and his civil disobedience activities lead to charges of dangerous driving and public nuisance. Undeterred, Dayne will continue touring Australia throughout 2015, helping communities living with CSG to fight back and attempt to prevent the industry’s spread beyond Queensland.   ----------   For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here.   With thanks to producer Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You might be wondering what coal seam gas has to do with learning, but for ordinary Australian, and now film maker Dayne Pratzky, the Frackman, it's become a major issue. Australia is currently experiencing a "gas rush", and when the Queensland Gas Company arrived at Dayne Pratzky's home to inform him that drilling for coal seam gas was about to commence on his property, a battle started that would see Dayne become a global activist fighting against a multi-billion dollar industry. Dayne learnt much about the coal seam gas industry, but also about himself, and what people can do to help themselves in the face of seemingly insurmountable tasks. This is a message for all Australians, with particular focus on our next generations. Coal seam gas vs the environment; the benefits of optimism

Continuing our investigation of the science of so-called unconventional gas extraction, we turn to Australia where coal seam gas is driving community and environmental concerns.Although fracking is rarely used here (see the latest industry statistics), and the entire vast Great Artesian Basin is unlikely to be depleted (see the image above), some local water supplies have been contaminated by leaks of waste from drilling, for which the companies responsible have received insignificant penalties (see for example in 2011, 2014 and 2015).Gas's usefulness as a low-emission fuel is also thrown into question by fugitive emissions of methane from the majority of wells (according to a federal government study), although health risks from gas leaks are hard to verify (see the Queensland government report of health impacts on the town of Tara). But don't let that get you down too much, as research as shown that optimism and a positive attitude is associated with lower rates of coronary heart disease in both women (2009) and men (2001), less likelihood of death (2004) and better health overall (1988).
