Why do America's trains suck? What was your worst sketch? Can I have $10? In this very special episode, Rollie and Nicole answer some hard-hitting questions from the listeners and a few special guests…Listen to the full episode on our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/deniersplaybook) SOCIALS & MORE (https://linktr.ee/deniersplaybook)CORRECTIONSThis episode mentions lobbying efforts by Southwest Airlines to prevent the construction of high speed rail in the state of Florida. Those documented lobbying efforts, however, related to opposing the construction of high speed rail networks in Texas, rather than Florida (Wanna get away?). Florida's high speed rail hopes were instead dashed by then-governor, Rick Scott, who in 2011 rejected billions of dollars from the federal government on offer for the development of a high speed rail network. Scott and his wife, as a complete coincidence, would go on to invest some of their personal wealth in a fund with links to privatized high speed rail development in Florida. Kathleen Mogelgaard is President and CEO of the Population Institute, where she directs the organization's advocacy and public education activities. Population Institute advocates for gender equality and universal access to sexual and reproductive health services to improve lives, promote human rights, save the planet, and build a better tomorrow. In 2022, the world's population surpassed 8 billion people, and according to demographers at the United Nations, global population may add another 2.4 billion before leveling off toward the end of this century. The Population Bomb, a 1968 book co-authored by Paul R. Ehrlich, predicted worldwide famines due to overpopulation, as well as other major societal upheavals, and advocated immediate action to limit population growth. A counterpart organization with the Population Institute is the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the global sexual and reproductive health agency that strives for a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

New research raises doubt around the climate benefits of the 45Q tax credit for carbon capture and storage for fossil fuel powerplants. --- The Inflation Reduction Act earmarks billions of dollars of incentives for carbon capture and storage from coal and gas-fired powerplants. Ideally, the incentive will provide a path for fossil generators to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions as the electric grid transitions to cleaner resources and to net zero. Yet recent research calls into question the climate impact of the IRA's carbon capture tax credit, known as 45Q. The report, co-authored by a former deputy assistant secretary for the Department of Energy's Office of Carbon Management, finds that 45Q could lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions by incentivizing coal and gas generators to extend their working lives and maximize their output. The result could be billions of dollars of taxpayer money spent with no climate benefit. Emily Grubert, report co-author and now an associate professor of sustainable energy policy at the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, examines the costs and climate impacts of carbon capture and storage under the IRA. Grubert explains how the 45Q tax credit could lead to unintended climate impacts. She also discusses the need for robust review of proposed carbon capture projects, and strong regulatory guardrails, if 45Q and CCS are to deliver climate benefits. Emily Grubert is an associate professor of sustainable energy policy at the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, and former deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Carbon Management at the U.S. Department of Energy. In this episode of the Yara's Crop Nutrition Podcast, Scott and Dr. Rob Michelson discuss the Canadian government's mandate to reduce fertilizer-related greenhouse emissions by 30% by 2030. They are joined by Dr. Tom Bruulsema, the chief scientist at Plant Nutrition Canada, to delve into the evidence supporting the four R's of nutrient stewardship and their role in reducing emissions and improving nitrogen use efficiency. The conversation covers the importance of finding a balance between reducing emissions and maintaining high crop yields, the use of nitrification inhibitors to reduce nitrous oxide emissions, and the need to consider all four R's (rate, source, timing, and placement) in fertilizer management. Dr. Bruulsema highlights the economic benefits for farmers and the collaborative efforts between the government and industry to support the adoption of sustainable practices. The episode concludes with a call for continued collaboration and innovation to achieve lasting gains in nutrient stewardship. Tune in to gain insights into Canada's efforts to achieve emission reduction targets while maximizing productivity and sustainability in agriculture.

Last week the EPA announced that the U.S. has cut greenhouse emissions 17% since 2005 despite millions of more people and a 90% increase in the economy. WWJ's Jon McElroy has more.
Farmers say they are playing a key role in reducing the country's greenhouse gas emissions, thanks in part to changing farm practices and skyrocketing fertiliser costs. Last week, a Ministry for the Environment report revealed a fall in the country's total greenhouse emissions of 0.7 percent in 2021. The key driver was reduced agricultural emissions - down 1.5 percent. Corin Dann spoke to Andrew Hoggard, Federated Farmers President and its climate change spokesperson.
On this episode of the podcast, I am joined by Storm Baynes-Ryan, a New Zealand farmer and mother of four. Like many countries around the world, New Zealand has proposed short-sided government policies with the intent of decreasing emissions. And like other similar global policies, the science backing these policies is flawed and does not account for the impact it will have on farmers and rural communities. What is likely to happen is an increase in micronutrient deficiencies once meat is no longer available or affordable and the destruction of the rural way of life. What is often overlooked in these policy debates are the personal stories of farmers experiencing this firsthand. This short but impactful episode will give some insight into how New Zealand farmers are dealing with the new government policies. Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. A new study from UCLA and the University of Chicago says California wildfires produce twice as much greenhouse gas emissions as the state's law's have cut regarding green house gas reductions over the last 18 years. KVI's John Carlson examines the environmental danger California's "let it burn" forest management policy has hurt the environment rather than helping it. Carlson notes that Oregon and Washington have mimicked California's forest management model.

Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with special guest Roger Helmer who served in the political arena as a member of the European Parliament representing the United Kingdom, and serving in the Conservative and the UKIP parties, respectively. We review the policies proposed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (also known as COP26) held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Roger Helmer shares his concerns about the current energy crisis in Europe - and how the transition to renewable sources of energy may adversely impact Americans. Moreover, these policies are examined in light of concerns that they will hurt poor nations in Africa and lead to massive migration movements in the future. Further reading: The Wind Turbine Failures Behind Europe's Energy Crisis Are a Warning for America (https://www.newsweek.com/wind-turbine-failures-europe-energy-crisis-warning-america-fossil-fuels-1643011) "The ongoing energy crisis in Europe has shown how nations will experience "growing pains" from a switch to renewable sources of energy including wind power, according to experts who spoke to Newsweek. The situation across the Atlantic may provide a warning for the U.S., with President Joe Biden having set a goal to decarbonize the nation's power grid by 2035 and the whole U.S. economy by 2050. Decarbonizing the power grid will involve a transition to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, which can be less reliable than traditional fossil fuels. Europe's recent experience with wind turbines could be instructive for the United States. Energy and transport ministers from 27 European Union (EU) countries gathered for an emergency meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday amid rising fuel costs on the continent. The crisis has come amid a 20 percent reduction in output in the wind power sector and and rising costs of oil and gas, as reported by Forbes." Roger Helmer served in the political arena as a member of the European Parliament representing the United Kingdom and serving in the Conservative and the UKIP parties, respectively. He started his business career in 1965 with Procter & Gamble, going on to hold senior marketing and general management appointments in a range of companies, including Readers Digest and National Semiconductor. Mr. Helmer has published two books on European issues, "Straight Talking on Europe" in 2000, and "A Declaration of Independence" in 2002. He also served as Chairman of The Freedom Association in the United Kingdom. He was a leading figure in the Better Off Out campaign - the Brexit Movement, that called for the UK to leave the European Union. Mr. Helmer is one of the founding members of Jerusalem Leaders Summit in Israel and has spoken at numerous events organized by the International Leaders Summit in Washington, DC, Brussels, and Eastern Europe. https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Greenhouse emissions continue to rise at an alarming rate, hitting new records. The economic slowdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic didn't slow them down, the World Meteorological Organisation warned on Monday as ministers from countries around the world prepare to meet in Scotland for the COP26 climate talks. COP26 is the next annual UN climate change conference. COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties.' The summit will be attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—a treaty that came into force in 1994. “Greenhouse gas levels are at new records. Again concentration of CO2 in 2020 was 149 percent of pre-industrial times; Economic slowdown from COVID-19 had no real impact; We are set for an increase much higher than the #ParisAgreement target of 1.5°C-2°C," the WMO said on its Twitter page. Britain, which is chairing the COP26 talks, said in a press statement that there has been some progress on getting the developed nations to meet the target of contributing $100 billion each, per year, towards climate action. Tesla hit $1 trillion in market value as America's biggest electric car maker continues to benefit from the world's shift towards electric vehicles. Shares in the company surged 12.6 percent on Monday after Tesla struck a $4.2 billion deal with rental car service Hertz, to supply an initial order of 100,000 electric cars and new charging infrastructure by the end of 2022. Tesla joins Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google's parent company Alphabet in the $1 trillion club as the world's most valuable companies. Facebook has said that the operating profits for 2021 will be lower by $10 billion owing to increasing investments in its metaverse plan and augmented reality and virtual reality. That includes its investments in hardware products like the new 128GB Oculus Quest2 headset. The social networking company reported its fiscal third-quarter earnings results after markets in the US on Monday. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement that, starting the current quarter, the company will break out additional financial metrics for Facebook Reality Labs—which includes the augmented reality and virtual reality work—and Facebook's ‘family of apps'—which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other services. A court in the Netherlands has ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030. Environmental groups including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth filed the case at the Hague in 2019. They want the oil giant to comply with the 2015 Paris Agreement. The verdict marks the first time any company has been mandated to reduce its carbon footprint. Activists say this precedent can now be used to file similar suits against other big polluters. #Shell #GreenhouseEmissions #CarbonFootprint
According to Rhodium Group, a climate research organisation, China accounts for more greenhouse gases than all the world’s developed nations combined.
LA smog isn’t as visible as it used to be, but what’s out of sight can’t be out of mind. Air pollution is a major component of greenhouse emissions, as well as contributing to environmental injustice. In episode two of “In Our Backyard,” host Warren Olney hears how fighting both global warming and environmental injustice go hand in hand.

This week we're talking about something not many people know about, which is the massive greenhouse emissions being released from the fossil fuel - gas - and LNG (liquefied natural gas). Those emissions are so big that in one major oil and gas producing area – the Permian Basin in the U.S. - they have likely wiped out all energy emission reductions since 2010 for the whole country. If only 3% of gas produced is leaked, gas is worse for the climate than coal. Yet it's more than 3%. BP says it's 3.2%. And a recent study of the Permian Basin found that 3.7% was lost in the production process. What's this telling us? This is the gas industry's 'Volkswagen' moment. Bruce Robertson is IEEFA's LNG and gas analyst, and he talks about the extent of the gas industry's emissions in this latest podcast. Further reading: Bruce Robertson. Last June the largest oil refinery on the East Coast of the United States blew up. In the disaster’s wake, can the city of Philadelphia and its residents transition to a cleaner, more financially sound future? ---On June 21, 2019 the largest oil refinery on the East Coast exploded. The blast released thousands of pounds of toxic hydrogen fluoride gas into the surrounding Philadelphia air, and launched bus-sized debris across the neighboring Schuylkill River. Through sheer luck, the dissipating effect of winds on toxic gasses, and thanks to the clear headed emergency action of refinery operators, no one was seriously injured in the moments following the blast.Yet many in this city point out that the refinery leaves behind a legacy of health impacts, including elevated asthma rates in the densely populated neighborhoods that surround the site. The refinery also leaves a vast patch of urban landscape that is so toxic that it’s doubtful that it can ever be used for residential development. In the months following the explosion, the city, its residents, and business interests jockeyed over the site’s fate. Proposals were floated to repurpose the site as a logistics hub, return it to its natural state as a tidal marshland, and even to repair and reopen the damaged refinery itself. Yet, the decision on what to do with the site would ultimately be made within the walls of a Delaware bankruptcy court, where the priorities of the refinery’s creditors would take precedence. On January 22 the waiting came to an end. The court announced that a Chicago-based real-estate company had agreed to purchase the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery for $240 million dollars. The buyer has not yet announced a detailed vision for the site, but has a history of redeveloping industrial locations for less-polluting uses. Yet the auction’s losing bidders aren’t looking to go quietly, and there may be more drama to come.Dr. Mark Alan Hughes, director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and former founding sustainability manager for the city of Philadelphia, talks about the sale of Philadelphia Energy Solutions and what the future may hold for the city of Philadelphia.Related ContentBeyond Bankruptcy: The Outlook for Philadelphia’s Neighborhood Refinery https://kleinmanenergy.upenn.edu/paper/beyond-bankruptcyThis Energy Transition is Different. We had our fun last week, exploring how progress in renewable energy and electric vehicles may help us combat encroaching climate change. This week we’re being a bit more hard-nosed, taking a look at what’s currently happening to our climate. Michael Mann is one of the world’s leading climate scientists, and also a dedicated advocate for improved public understanding of the issues. It was his research with Raymond Bradley and Malcolm Hughes that introduced the “hockey stick” graph, showing how global temperatures have increased rapidly compared to historical averages. We dig a bit into the physics behind the greenhouse effect, the methods that are used to reconstruct temperatures in the past, how the climate has consistently been heating up faster than the average models would have predicted, and the relationship between climate change and extreme weather events. Happily even this conversation is not completely pessimistic — if we take sufficiently strong action now, there’s still time to avert the worst possible future catastrophe.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Michael Mann received his Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Pennsylvania State University, with joint appointments in the Departments of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute. He is the director of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications and four books. His most recent book is The Tantrum that Saved the World, a “carbon-neutral kids’ book.”Web sitePenn State web pageEarth System Science CenterGoogle scholarAmazon.com author pageWikipediaTwitter
California has released its annual greenhouse gas inventory, with the numbers praised by Governor Gavin Newsom. But emissions are up in nearly every category, with critics calling presentation of the data misleading.
Al talks to Michael Mann, Nobel Prize-winning climatologist for his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We cover a lot of ground. How to talk about climate change to your crazy right-wing climate-denying uncle. “Uncle Hal, sea level is rising. For two reasons. Ice is melting. And water expands when it gets warmer.” If Uncle Hal insists sea level is rising because of all the rocks falling into the ocean, then just give up. We talk about how climate used to be a bipartisan issue, but since Citizens United, the Koch Brothers have threatened to primary any Republican who acknowledges the science. Addressing climate change has become a victim of our tribal politics. The answer right now? Win.
In this episode, I interview Joseph Stagner, the Executive Director, Sustainability and Energy Management at Stanford University. Over the past several years, Joe and his team transformed Stanford’s energy infrastructure by electrifying its heating system, replacing its gas-fired power plant with grid power, creating a unique system to recover heat, building massive tanks to store hot and cold water, and building a solar power plant. This project cut the campus’s total greenhouse gas emissions 68 percent and is lowering the system’s operating costs by $425m over 35 years. Joseph was very gracious to come on and talk about the origins of this project, the hurdles his team met along the way, the results so far, and where it is going in the future. We also covered how these learnings can be applied to get other universities and entities with large campus infrastructures to follow suit. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Joseph is a rare one, in that he not only has a firm grasp on the problem and what is needed, but he’s gone out and deployed it at scale and is posting amazing results. His story struck me as a real bright spot in what, at times, can feel like an uphill battle. Enjoy!
