With a remarkable fourteenth season of their Mister Sunday open air parties just around the corner, @mistersaturdaynight's @misterjustincarter shares with us a special excerpt from his NYD sunrise set at Nowadays back in January, pulling out some definitive house and disco classics with heartfelt nods to NYC's deep-rooted dance music history. Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when recording this mix at Nowadays? How would you describe the feeling in the room that day, and is there a sound, or time/place in dance music history that connects all the different moments in one way or another? A. I know Nowadays' indoor dance floor intimately, and this slot in particular, starting around 5am on New Year's Day, is one I've played for the past four or five years, so I came in with a very specific idea of what to do. I knew that the party would be in full-tilt New Year's Eve energy and that I'd want to hold the pace but move into a more liminal space, so I played records that are propulsive but dreamy. Once I established that headspace, the sun started to rise, so there was a natural energy shift, and I leaned into that. I stopped mixing and played Loft-style for about thirty minutes. Letting records play from beginning to end, playing music with vocals and live instrumentation, it's grounding, makes it feel like a house party, reminds us that we're connected with each other. That felt important to me, knowing that the dance floor had been in a more driving mode for eight hours. After that interlude, I built it back up, because there was still like twenty hours to go! In general, I'm piecing together a few elements in my sets these days: deep, soulful elements that first drew me in when I arrived in NYC in the late 90s; psychedelic, minimal music that was coming from Europe in the 00s, when I first started to DJ; and then that Loft thing I referenced above. Q. Are there any records in the set that are especially close to your heart, or old favourites that you had been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? A. I hadn't played my 45 of “Be There In the Morning” by Renee Geyer in years. (It's a record I found on my first Australian tour in Melbourne, at Licorice Pie, back in 2015, actually!) Good sunrise record, obviously. “Will you be there in the morning?” Yes! Here I am! Q. With the winter months in NYC now behind you, how are preparations coming along for the return of your legendary outdoor Mister Sunday parties? Will you and Eamon be planning to do anything different for your fourteenth year? And after doing it for so long now, how do you guys continue to keep yourselves inspired? A. We purposefully try to keep Mister Sunday consistent. Of course we're always digging for music, and we always invite a couple guests who've never played, so there's something that feels fresh for every season. But the consistency that comes from having a weekly party that's been happening for such a long time, it's something we consciously try to maintain – it's one of the main ingredients for the community that has developed around the party. No one has to wonder where the party will be this week, whether it's happening this Sunday or not, etc. That said, we're going to be throwing our 500th(!) party this season, and we'll do something special to commemorate that.

From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock and as a solo artist with no less than 26 ARIA Top 40 hits to his credit as a singer, songwriter and producer, ROSS WILSON is one of Australia's most awarded, respected and well-known artists. From the legendary band Daddy Cool whose number one anthem Eagle Rock and debut album “Daddy Who?” smashed all previous sales records in Australia an astounding 50 years ago in 1971, to the 1977 formation of Mondo Rock, delivering 80's hits ‘Cool World', ‘State of The Heart', ‘Chemistry', ‘No Time', and ‘Come Said The Boy' and into the 21st century as a solo performer, Ross has never been out of the limelight. In fact, Ross Wilson is probably the only person in Australian rock music who can't make a comeback simply because he's never been away. With a career that spans well over 50 years, Ross remains one of this country's most respected and most beloved artists. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock, as a solo artist, a songwriter or producer of the legendary Skyhooks and Jo Jo Zep, Ross's success has continued unabated. He fronted Daddy Cool and exploded out of the '70s playing rootsy '50s sounds. He then formed Mondo Rock who surfed the contemporary scene with chart topping singles & albums from the mid '70s to the late '80s. As a solo performer and major songwriter he continued to achieve success and make his mark during the '90s & beyond with many of his songs being recorded by artists as diverse as Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, Troy Cassar-Daley, Keke (Spain), Renee Geyer, Christine Anu, Duane Jarvis (US), Elkie Brooks (UK) even The Wiggles! His latest release in 2023, an EP called 'She's Stuck On Facebook All The Time' is a modern day tragicomedy in the blues genre. Ross Wilson joins us this week to fill us in on the entirety of his musical career. He's had an amazing ride and is as entertaining in interview as he is on stage. A must listen. To learn more about Ross Wilson head for his website www.rosswilson.com.au If you'd like to get in touch with me with a comment, feedback or a suggestion for a future guest for the show, please feel free to contact me through my website www.abreathofreshair.com.au I hope you enjoy this week's episode.

Annie Wright's career in the music industry began in Sydney Australia in 1974 when she was just 19 years of age Anne, with RCA Records. Young and naive, Annie paved her way to becoming one of the most respected women in the industry, who kept her feet firmly planted on the ground whilst working with the greatest musical talents including ABBA, John Denver, Bruce Springsteen, and one of Australia's best female artists, Renee Geyer, best known for her song, "Its A Man's World". Eventually Annie moved into the film industry and for a short period in politics, fighting against Coal Seam Gas in Australia. 1. My guest today is Stephen Housden. Stephen is regarded as one of the finest guitarists in the world. Well known as guitarist with Little River Band for more that two decades, he has also played and recorded with such music legends as Warren Zevon, Glenn Frey (The Eagles), Dr. John, Christopher Cross, John Entwistle (The Who), Renee Geyer, P.F Sloan, Albert Lee, Steve Cropper, The Seekers, Noel Redding (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) Marcia Hines, John Farnham, The Bushwhackers and many, many others. Born in Bedfordshire, U.K, Stephen was inspired to play the guitar by watching singing-cowboys on television as a child. After moving to Australia at the age of eight he quickly discovered Rock'n'roll and fell under the magic of such lead guitarists as Hank B. Marvin (The Shadows) and Chuck Berry. He formed his first band at High School. Hendrix and jazz great Wes Montgomery became influences as Stephen worked hard on learning as much technique as he could, while also striving to develop his own distinctive style. That style brought him to the attention of some of Australia's most successful recording acts and over the coming years Stephen was highly sought after as a band member and recording session player. In August 1981 Stephen was asked to join one of the world's most successful acts, Little River Band, as their lead guitarist. Since then he has toured the world many times over and and co-written many of their songs Over the years Stephen has conducted music theory and improvisation seminars for guitarists, and written columns for magazines such as Sonics and Australian Musician. He has also toured schools with his highly successful one-man show The Evolution of Rock Guitar. In the late 90s, Stephen and his family moved to Ireland. Long inspired by Irish music, Stephen now enjoys the opportunity to play with some of Ireland's top musicians as well as writing and recording for his various groups and his solo music. This conversation was recorded 03/01/2021. Intro music: "The Journey" - Stephen Housden / Tony Fossy. Outro music: "All Washed Up" - Stephen Housden / Frank Howson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tune into Take One Eastside FM 89.7 every Friday from 3pm to hear The Gig Life Podcast. https://eastsidefm.org/takeone/ Click here to securely donate or tip The Gig Life Podcast via PayPal. My guest today is bass player Harry Brus. Born in Austria, Harry and his family moved to Australia when he was 7 years old. Inspired by Hank B Marvin and The Beatles, Harry first picked up the guitar as a teenage. In '65 his band The Amazons scored a record deal with Festival Records and since then he has never stopped working as a professional musician. In '67 Harry jumped at the chance to play lead guitar for pop idol Johnny Young, and later joined Tony Gaha And The In People. A fortunate encounter with sax great Geoff Oakes started Harry's lifelong love affair with soul music. During these years Harry discovered bass-giant, James Jamerson, whose legendary bass style became Harry's true inspiration on the bass. Jamerson, the great Chuck Rainey and Jerry Jemmott became the three gentlemen of bass who inspired Harry's own unique bass style. Harry has played with a host of Australian and NZ greats. Mother Earth, Renee Geyer, Kevin Borich, Australian Crawl, Tommy and Phil Emmanuel, Barry Leef, Marcia Hines Jimmy Barnes and countless others. A workhorse of a musician, a true Australian music legend, this has kept Harry in the game for 53 years and counting. This one's a cracker. So sit back back and open your ears to some of the life and times of Mr Harry Brus. This conversation was recorded 05/10/2020. This is a Man's Man's World, sang Renee Geyer back in 1974. And despite equal numbers of women studying, making and showing a love for music, there's still a vast inequality in the Australian music industry to this day. It's a story often told, but in a brilliant new doco “Her Sound Her Story”, these tales are captured also as a celebration of the scene we have (both on and off the stage). Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore and Michelle Grace Hunder are the filmmaker and producers behind this film, which may have begun as a photography project but grew quickly as soon as they saw how large and consistent these narratives still were. Everyone from Tina Arena to Ecca Vandal, Missy Higgins to Mojo Juju, Kate Ceberano to Thelma Plum feature in this brilliant doco. From backyards to baths, stages to screen, Claudia and Michelle share the stories behind Her Sound Her Story. Ella Hooper - 'Shard' Mojo Juju - 'Native Tongue' Ecca Vandal - 'Your Orbit (ft. One of Australia's busiest and most accomplished singer/songwriters Ella Thompson (GL, Dorsal Fins) joins me to tell the story of how Aussie soul legend Renee Geyer became her childhood mentor, the lessons and advice Geyer taught her and why neither of them fit comfortably in Australia's musical landscape. Plus, should singers smoke? My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. Only a month or two after legendary singer Jon English sadly passed away, i was fortunate enough to get this interview by my good mate Cal Millar from Kelts Entertainment… Hear how and where Brisbane’s Blues […] The post Keith “Stretch” Kerwin – The Foster Brothers – Guitarist – Songwriter – Jon English -Renee Geyer appeared first on Gold Coast vs Drew Kruck.
When I heard Renee Geyer was a famous international jazz singer I was thrilled to get the chance to go and see her sing. As I am an amateur singer with jazzy vocals myself it felt like it was a match made to be. However Renee Geyer was different to my initial assumptions. If I were to liken the whole experience to dating a person you met online, Renee Geyer would be a date you hade hopes for, only to have the actual date be considerably different to your expectations. Renee’s actuality contrasts considerably to the young pictures you see of her in the programs. They boast she is a proud Australian jazz talent. When I think of jazz, I think of swanky bars, dim lights and a commitment to seriousness to music as a vehicle for creative expression. Therefor, I’d constructed a vague conclusion that she was going to be refined, musically precise and like she looked in the picture. Malvern Town hall was dimmed, with fancy cheese platters on the tables to boot. It felt like the show was going to live up to expectations…But When Renee finally walked on stage I thought “Is this lady her mother?”. The lady started to sing and a raspy, low tenor voice filled the room. It was undeniably Renee Geyer, reminding me of female version of Tom Waits. The first song was a slow song. An odd choice, but it caught the audience’s attention. Then the show really began. A faster, rockier song was played, and Renee’s real experience as a performer shone through. Her vocal techniques began to pulse into the songs, she started to move round the stage, and the room came alive. People left their drinks and cheese platters and started dancing. It was from there on I began to see the real Renee Geyer. Renee Geyer’s songs are not particularly special. They’re simple, catchy and don’t try to hard to be anything other than a good song to dance or sing along to. If you were to pick up album of her songs, chances are you’d like the album, but you probably just like it. It lacks the prestige people associate with jazz. Maybe this is why seeing Renee perform is so much fun. Renee breaks the rules, get people to let their hair down and coerces them into having a great time. She is both a performer and a conductor, bringing in her band member’s parts with both dance and sharp movements. She becomes so playful with this technique, she turns it into a hilarious gag, signalling the ban by adjusting her clothing, swishing her hair and other movements that appear to have nothing to do with the music, then looks at the band like they’ve been spying on her. She milks the pauses and silences in her songs to great dramatic effect, and even plays the other band member’s instruments. The look of confusion on the pianist as Renee does a Glissando (The move where you run your finger down the piano), is priceless, yet the professional performer continues the song as nothing happened. Renee’s own singing technique is obviously honed through years of performing. She trills with ease. She belts with clarity and confidence, even with a clearly aged voice. Her dry, aged vocals suits some of her songs but the songs she sung when she was young she isn’t able to craft like she was once was. She whistles in parts of her songs to reach high clear pitches, which changes the tone of the piece slightly, but this adds to her music in a refreshing way. Undeniably, Renee’s experience and creativity allows her to convincingly convey meaning and emotion in her music. She expresses a diverse array of life experiences through tone, timing, crescendo and other simple musical quirks and techniques effectively, which (to me) is what proves her abilities as a musician. If you’re looking for a night of tip top jazz, then perhaps you should look for different performers, as Renee’s songs are more like Rock n roll, with Jazz and reggae influences. Though, if you’re looking for a fun night out and an opportunity to dance, Renee and her band will deliver in many wonderful ways. I would highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys singing and dancing like no one is watching and who doesn’t mind that most of the other people dancing along side you could be old enough to be your parents. The first Jewish people to come to Australia arrived on the First Fleet on 26 January 1788. Among the 827 convicts on the English First Fleet were at least 8 and possibly up to 14 or 15 British convicts who were Jewish. On board was Esther Abrahams. Esther would go on to become the First Lady of the Colony of New South Wales and an important landholder and farmer in her own right. Over the past few hundred years there have been several waves of Jewish migration to Australia. More recently after the Second World War Australia accepted significant numbers of Jewish refugees from war ravaged Europe. For this episode I recommend the excellent Australian history podcast Last Stop to Nowhere hosted by Michael Sloan and Kyle Sherer. You can download it from ITunes.
