Our hosts, Alexis Highland and Avery Voress, explore the science of flight, from the dinosaur origins of birds to the anatomy and physics that make flying possible. They break down feathers, bones, muscles, lungs, lift, and wing shape, then connect it all back to why flight is so important for parrots' physical and mental wellbeing. This episode also covers how recall, return, stations, and harness training can help companion parrots safely use flight as enrichment, exercise, and confidence-building. The species spotlight is the Pacific Parrotlet (Forpus coelestis).Links:Visit Us: https://www.parrotstars.comParrot Stars on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/parrotstars/Parrot Stars on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@parrot_starsParrot Stars on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@parrotstarsLearn More: Castro, J. Caton recounts his father teaching him to plant by the Moon, a 1993 dream tied to a Sun–Venus conjunction, and his experience with Project Hindsight translations that renewed interest in sky-based practice. He describes conversations and synchronicities with Venus and plants, argues astrologers have an ethical imperative to know the sky firsthand, and explains practical entry points like tracking Venus's seven Moon conjunctions and working with new/full moons for intentions. In this episode, I chat with creature effects artist, puppeteer and digital pioneer Craig Caton-Largent about a career that arguably traces the entire arc of modern visual effects — from foam latex and animatronics to motion control, performance capture and full CG animation. Craig talks about growing up on a sheep and cattle ranch in Washington State, being captivated by the 1960s Batman TV show and then Planet of the Apes, and teaching himself prosthetics from Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook. After tracking down Dick Smith's address in Who's Who in America, he wrote a letter that led to a year of mentorship over cassette tapes and ultimately introductions to Rick Baker, Stan Winston and Tom Burman. We get into his first job on Charles Band's Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, working on the Olympic alien for the 1984 closing ceremonies, sculpting barnacles on Cocoon, building Spock's seamless silicone ears on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, undulating menacingly under shaving cream on Larry Cohen's The Stuff, and puppeteering Slimer's mouth on the original Ghostbusters. A big part of the conversation focuses on Jurassic Park, including the design evolution of the T-Rex, the helicopter convention moment that led to the McFadden motion base, the logistics of moving the full-size animatronic across the San Fernando Valley at night, and Craig's work as the Raptor puppeteer, including the now-legendary "head tilt" at the kitchen window that earned an on-set "It's like Alien, I love it" from Spielberg. We also talk about Craig's twenty-year stint as the caretaker, or "doctor", to the original ET puppet, including the time the LAPD turned up at his garage door thinking he was running a crack lab while he was actually repainting ET. Plus the story of how Stan Winston handing him a couple of SGI machines led, almost overnight, to him becoming one of the eight co-founders of Digital Domain alongside James Cameron and Scott Ross. Later in the conversation we move into Craig's animation career as a final layout artist and character TD at DreamWorks and Disney, with credits on Tangled, Rise of the Guardians, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Turbo, and stories from working with Guillermo del Toro at DreamWorks. We finish on Craig's current role as Creative Director of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects department at the New York Film Academy in Burbank. Near the end of every council term, we invite the rookies who were elected in the previous election onto this podcast to talk about their experience. This time it's different because one, there were so many new councillors in 2022, and two, in this case, we have two people who've decided that one term is enough. How can just four years on Guelph city council possibly be enough? The day after Municipal Election Day in 2022, the Ontario government announced Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, and its sweeping changes. It was an early, practical lesson that cities are creatures of the province, and the province was going to reshape them as they saw fit. Over the last four years, Queen's Park has been freely changing the rules and it seems without a lot of consultation with the local political leaders. This was the atmosphere that both Erin Caton and Michele Richardson walked into when they took office in November 2022. Both these councillors have a lot in common: Being a Guelph city councillor was their first gig in politics, they both became wardmates to long serving councillors and succeeded other long serving councillors, and they've both decided that they do not want to run for re-election. Why have they decided to walk away now, and what lessons will they take with them? Ward 1 City Councillor Erin Caton and Ward 3 City Councillor Michele Richardson will share their thinking on this edition of the pod. They will talk about what factors went into their decision to retire, what they wish they had known about the job in advance, and the ways it was tough to adapt to all those changes as a first-timer. They will also talk about advice for their successors, the things they want to finish before October, what they plan on doing next, and whether they might ever run for office again. So let's talk about the city council experience on this week's Guelph Politicast! The nominations for mayor, city councillor, and school trustee opens this Friday, May 1 and will continue to be open until late August. You can learn more about how to run, who's running and other important information here. Chad Caton returns to The Jeff Dornik Show to expose what he witnessed firsthand while attending multiple leftist anti Trump protests across the country, including Portland and Minneapolis. Drawing from direct experience on the ground, Caton explains why these protests are turning violent, how they are being deliberately organized rather than forming organically, and what Americans must understand about the forces driving the chaos. Jeff Dornik and Chad Caton confront the truth behind the unrest and discuss how citizens should respond when political violence is normalized and protected by the radical left.SPONSORSupermassive Black Coffee is crafted from organic, gourmet beans fire-roasted in an antique Victorian-era roaster, delivering the rich, smooth, non-acidic taste that reminds you this is how coffee was always meant to be. Kelley Clayton, a 35-year-old mother of two, was brutally murdered in her Caton, New York home on September 28, 2015. The attack appeared staged as a home invasion, but nothing was stolen and there was no forced entry. One of Kelley's children witnessed part of the horrific scene, helping lead investigators toward the truth. As evidence mounted, a murder-for-hire plot emerged involving her husband, Thomas Clayton, and a disgruntled former employee. The case revealed secret affairs, financial motives, shifting confessions, and a community devastated by the betrayal.Today's snack: Brown butter pecan barsBuy LMK merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/love-marry-kill-store/Support us on Patreon: https://patreon.com/lovemarrykillSources:https://www.peacocktv.com/watch/playback/vod/GMO_00000000370107_01/729fee5a-798c-3471-94a0-53c2123df084 Datelinehttps://www.hulu.com/watch/8edeed6a-3d99-4170-8758-7ba222c2af90 20/20https://www.newspapers.com/image-view/131716630/?match=1&terms=%22Kelley%20Clayton%22https://www.hulu.com/watch/8edeed6a-3d99-4170-8758-7ba222c2af90https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/star-gazette/name/kelley-clayton-obituary?id=21677715https://www.stargazette.com/story/news/public-safety/2017/01/20/clayton-trial-questions-over-poker-game-phone-call/96798910/https://www.stargazette.com/story/news/public-safety/2017/01/19/clayton-trial-alleged-accomplices-were-co-workers/96743388/https://www.newyorkupstate.com/sports/2017/04/upstate_ny_hockey_pro_gets_life_without_parole_for_killing_wife_murder_for_hire.htmlhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4447978/Former-hockey-pro-sentenced-life-prison.htmlhttps://www.stargazette.com/story/news/public-safety/2017/04/17/blandford-get-3-6-years-role-clayton-murder/100565918/https://www.stargazette.com/story/news/public-safety/2018/11/01/thomas-clayton-kelley-clayton-murder-hire-motive-michael-beard/1836311002/https://www.newspapers.com/image/132584642/?match=1&terms=%22Kelley%20Clayton%22https://www.stargazette.com/story/news/local/2025/09/25/murder-of-kelley-clayton-still-stirs-strong-emotions-a-decade-later/85816556007/?gnt-cfr=1&gca-cat=p&gca-uir=true&gca-epti=z119691p118050c118050d00----v119691d--57--b--57--&gca-ft=190&gca-ds=sophihttps://www.stargazette.com/story/news/local/2025/09/25/murder-of-kelley-clayton-still-stirs-strong-emotions-a-decade-later/85816556007/https://www.stargazette.com/story/news/local/2025/09/25/kelly-stage-clayton-murder-case-timeline-of-events-trial-verdicts/86167110007/https://www.bumc.bu.edu/camed/2024/12/04/largest-study-of-cte-in-male-ice-hockey-players-finds-odds-increased-34-with-each-year-played/

This week on Open Sources Guelph things are not going according to plan. From Queen's Park to Parliament Hill, our provincial and federal governments are missing the goal posts and are facing some rather harsh scrutiny. And speaking of scrutiny, we will talk to one of our city councillors about making the tough decisions that you probably didn't like about next year's city budget. This Thursday, December 4, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Pipeline Dreams. Last week (after deadline we might add), Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed a deal that, theoretically, will see a pipeline built from the tar sands to the Pacific coast. So good news, right? Depending on your point of view. B.C. Premier David Eby registered his outrage about being cut out, First Nations want the deal torn up, and Smith, for some reason, was booed by her own party members. Is the pipeline deal dead before the ink is dry? The King of Wasteful Spending. The Auditor General of Ontario released her annual report this week and... yikes! Focusing on healthcare, the report says - among other things - that OHIP is letting physicians overbill in the extreme, that the effort to expand the number of family doctors is desperately falling short, that there's no discernible plan for the expansion of med schools, and that a billion dollars in PPE's been written off after being allowed to expire. So what now? Dual of the Caton. Guelph city council approved the 2026 budget last week, which is technically the mayor's budget but they still get a say. There were two stories out of that budget, one was the nearly eight per cent likely increase for the year, and the second was the decision to not plow bike lanes this winter. Ward 1 City Councillor Erin Caton will join us now that they are on the other side to talk about making the tough calls and whether this is a budget they can run on. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

What if saying yes to significance over money could unlock a decade of impact and lead you to build the business you were always meant to create? In this episode, Steve Caton, founder of Altezza Solutions and fractional sales expert, shares his remarkable journey from rejecting his banker father's career path to becoming a champion for trapped founders. Through four pivotal relationships, each arriving at exactly the right moment, Steve learned the art of relational sales, the discipline of the sales process, the courage to choose significance, and the confidence to finally launch his own company. His mission? Freeing brilliant founders from the sales trap so they can lead their vision while spending more time at the dinner table with their families. Steve reflects on how the right mentors at the right time shaped his career and why he believes the fractional sales model is a game-changer for emerging growth companies stuck between $1-5 million in revenue. [00:06:00] What Altezza Does Altezza = Italian word for "altitude" (inspired by Colorado living) Provides fractional sales expertise AND execution Frees brilliant founders trapped doing sales instead of leading their vision Allows business owners to focus on what truly matters: building their extraordinary future [00:06:40] The Sales Trap is Real Emerging growth businesses started by visionary innovators Founders know they need to stop selling but don't have the framework Can't attract top-tier salespeople without proper sales infrastructure Hiring inexperienced or commission-only reps almost always fails [00:08:20] The Innovator's Journey Steve discovered he's wired as an innovator and starter Thrives in early-stage growth companies ($1-5M revenue range) Gets restless when companies become routine without innovation Spent career helping companies bring in their first real salesperson [00:11:00] The COVID Pivot Waited until last son graduated college to start the business Launched during COVID pandemic, initially seemed like bad timing Actually worked in their favor: remote work became normalized Altezza operates 100% remotely, selling remotely [00:12:00] The Sweet Spot Client Professional services or technology firms $1-5 million in revenue range Founder still trapped in the sales motion Highly relational, consultative sales needed Can sell remotely without boots-on-the-ground [00:13:00] Three Service Models Do It Yourself: Client has sales infrastructure, just needs the right salesperson Done With You: Some documentation exists, needs tweaking and 90-day support Done For You: Everything lives in founder's head, must extract, document, and build systems [00:14:40] Beyond the Numbers Stories of 40% sales increases and doubled revenue matter But the real win: founders getting home for dinner more often Client's wife thanked their salesperson: "My husband is home for dinner way more" Freedom founders dreamed of when starting their business [00:17:40] Four Pivotal People [00:18:40] 1. His Dad: The Passion Banking and finance background Ton of passion, drive, fire, and energy Steve internalized that drive but knew banking wasn't his path Couldn't envision putting on a suit and tie every day [00:19:23] 2. David: The Relational Sales Master Left high-paying pharmaceutical job to start real estate company Invited Steve to get real estate license and sell with him 10 years older, taught Steve everything about relationship-driven sales How to build rapport, ask open-ended questions, and shut up and listen Made way more money in real estate than he would have in banking [00:22:11] 3. Doug Sherman: The Process Guru Held record for highest math score on Air Force Academy entrance exam Sales consultant for companies like Boeing Helped Boeing overcome getting "their butt kicked by Airbus" Game changer: Taught Steve about sales PROCESS for the first time [00:25:24] 4. Jerry Melek: The Significance Prophet Grandfather of kid on Steve's son's football team Career counselor and recruiter with strong faith Steve at crossroads: high-paying jobs vs. low-paying significant opportunity Jerry's challenge: "You told me you wanted significance. This is black and white. Which job is about significance? If you care about significance and not money, this is a no-brainer." Hit Steve right between the eyes, he was too fearful to do what he felt led to do [00:29:00] 5. Don Martin: The Business Leadership Mentor Former Century 21 executive team member Gave Steve the tools to actually LEAD a company and be a business owner Helped Steve see he wasn't launching Altezza because of fear "God created you for this moment: see it, own it, have faith, take the step" Still there for challenges, rough days, pep talks, and "kicks in the ass" [00:31:40] The Ripple Effect Moment Leaving the company Jerry helped him join Spontaneous going away party with his team One by one shared the impact Steve had on them Gave him caricature with signatures and encouragement [00:34:49] The "Go With Others" Glass Gift from team member at that farewell gathering Reminder of ripple effects Steve won't get to see Still uses it 9 years later: an anchor to that meaningful season Physical reminder of choosing significance over salary KEY QUOTES "We don't get wherever we are in life by ourselves. It's always with the help that we get from other people we intersect with on the journey along the way." - Steve Caton "When a company got to a certain size, I started getting super restless because God wired me as an innovator and a starter. Today I sat down with Zach Caton from Revolutionary Dog Training. Zach is a dog trainer who specializes in addressing behavioral issues—and most of the time, it's not the dog's fault. We talked about how some behaviors are rooted in genetics, how play is the most effective training tool, and why it's so important to have a trainer involved when picking out a dog or raising a puppy. We also got into some fascinating stuff, like the power of a dog's sense of smell, their connection to wolves, and how Zach actually trains his dog to help out with garden chores. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jack O'Connell. The film follows twin brothers who return to their hometown to start a juke joint but run up against an unlikely problem. The film is deeply layered but one aspect we discuss thoroughly throughout is the idea of assimilation into what is perceived as a dominant or better culture/way of life from ones already a part of it versus the ability to be truly free and make your own impact with the need to give up any parts of yourself in the process.

Nous sommes au milieu du deuxième cycle avant notre ère. A Rome. As we hit this 100th episode milestone, we want to take a moment to thank all of our listeners for your support. Whether you've been with us from the beginning or joined us along the way, we appreciate you being part of this journey! In this 100th episode of the STR Data Lab, Jamie celebrates the milestone by sitting down with AirDNA co-founders Scott Shatford and Tom Caton to reflect on the company's journey and what lies ahead. They recount the early days, starting with Scott's 2014 project—a book and website analyzing short-term rentals in Santa Monica. Despite regulatory hurdles, this effort quickly evolved into a key resource for understanding Airbnb listings, laying the groundwork for AirDNA. Tom joined Scott in 2015, forming a business partnership during a sailing trip. From there, they pushed forward to build AirDNA into a powerful data platform, with the development of MarketMinder being a critical turning point. They also discuss the transition from delivering insights via simple PDF reports to creating a comprehensive SaaS platform that continues to shape the short-term rental industry. Throughout the episode, they highlight their decision to bootstrap the company, staying independent of external funding. The episode explores the technical and business challenges they faced, including the complexities of data scraping, adapting to changes in Airbnb's algorithm, and the massive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond the business, Scott and Tom share how they managed stress, balanced luck with hard work, and navigated key decisions that led to AirDNA's success and eventual sale. Post-sale, Tom has turned his attention to new projects, including developing a murder mystery board game and investigating business fraud. Scott, meanwhile, enjoys traveling and personal hobbies like golf and ping pong, though both hint at possible new ventures in the future. This episode offers a detailed look at how AirDNA grew from a niche idea into an industry-leading platform. You don't want to miss it! ~~~~ Signup for AirDNA for FREE

Sarah Caton, a young preacher's daughter growing up in a small Mormon town in Utah is beginning to doubt her faith. Highly observant, and stubborn, Sarah tends to see and point out inconsistencies which keeps getting her in trouble, especially in church. But ultimately, the very traits she thinks will be her downfall are what lead to her starting the deconstruction process.By following her own truth, she fears losing her family and entire community. She struggles with the decision to leave behind the religious abuse and control only to find domestic abuse waiting for her on the other side. Will she find the courage to stand up for herself, or will she once again submit to her patriarchal authority figure? Interwoven with humor, poignant memories, and vivid recollections, this is one girl's journey from compliant convert to doubting “exvangelical." - the description from Caton's memoir "Deconstructing: Memoir of a Preacher's Daughter."Purchase her memoir on Amazon: https://a.co/d/2rWZih7Andrew Pledger's LinksFacebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153866318625322/Join my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/4ndrewpledgerMy Substack: https://speakingupandrewpledger.substack.com/Social Media: https://andrewpledger.mypixieset.com/links-Music: https://www.purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast.
