Three incredible artistic talents came together at the beginning of the millennium to create an astounding work of art: Tom Cruise, John Woo, and Limp Bizkit... together they produced MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 and we thank them every goddamn day of our lives. We're back to discuss M: I 2 with connoisseur of early 2000s cinema/vibes Katherine Vienneau. We've got the Chimera Virus, we've got Thandiwe Newton, we've got Dougray Scott oh my god we've got Dougray Scott. We've got masks galore, we've got sexual Tom Cruise having sexual sex, we've got at least a little bit of that classic John Woo doves and slo-mo and heroic bloodshed. We also pay our respects to Val Kilmer, Rest in Peace, and our disrespects to former friend of the show Paul Schrader, Rest in Piss. We talk about a very special Buckcherry appearance at Woodstock '99, and also recount our favourite Val Kilmer movies (TOP SECRET!, THE DOORS, THE SALTON SEA, and REAL GENIUS). Alex also tells us about the latest British comedy THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND which, unfortunately, sets up Ben to do sevearl Carey Mulligan impressions.Join us next week for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III (Roman numerals this time, nice)Follow us @thefranchisees on Instagram and Twitter and email us at thefranchiseespod@gmail.com

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. After nearly 15 years of shaping Spider-Man's adventures at Marvel Comics, Eisner Award winner Dan Slott is making the move to DC. The acclaimed writer will make his DC debut on Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series featuring art by American Vampire co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton and Silo's Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in Columbia's comedy reboot of Anaconda. Nintendo has revealed its Switch 2 console with first look images and a teaser trailer, confirming a 2025 release. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Dexter series Dexter: Resurrection and will star alongside Michael C. Hall. Filmmaker David Lynch, who created celebrated counterculture classics like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and co-created Twin Peaks, has died at 78. A24 and Picturestart are teaming with director Charlie Polinger for a revisionist and darkly comedic take on The Masque of The Red Death, based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Sydney Sweeney is currently in negotiations to star. After extensive negotiations, IMAX has secured a deal to exclusively screen Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of "Narnia" in theaters worldwide for two weeks, beginning Thanksgiving 2026, before its streaming debut that Christmas. Joel McHale has joined the cast of Scream 7 and will play Mark Evans, the husband to Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. A24 has released the first trailer for upcoming horror film Opus, which hits theaters on March 14th. The film stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, and Amber Midthunder.
Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte, Josh Parham & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the latest film from director Barry Jenkins, "Mufasa: The Lion King," starring Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Tiffany Boone, Donald Glover, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Blue Ivy Carter & Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. We say it's the latest film from Barry Jenkins, but it doesn't look or feel like any of his previous works, as he decided to undertake the sequel to the poorly received but financially successful 2019 remake of "The Lion King." What did we think of Jenkins's direction? Was he able to elevate this material? How did we feel about the visuals, music, and voice performances? Tune in as we discuss these topics, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... The King has returned! Barry Jenkins' Lion King prequel - Mufasa: The Lion King - has released in theaters and I had the chance to check it out just recently. The Lion King is my favorite animated film of all-time but beyond further reflection and pondering, the remake was quite a big letdown that lacked much of the soul and creativity of that original animated film. That's why I was very skeptical about Barry Jenkins' prequel and I wanted nothing more than to be excited about more movies set in the continuity of The Lion King. Barry Jenkins' involvement certainly had my curiosity piqued though. Did the movie win me over, or is this yet another soulless live-action Disney film? Find out in this review! On 13th September 1996, Tupac Shakur died in a still-unexplained killing (well, unless Eminem just blew the case wide open). It left a lot of things in limbo, including Vondie Curtis-Hall's spiky, charming directorial debut. Nobody wanted to see a crime comedy starring someone who'd just been the victim of a horrific crime, even if - as Graham and Mark unpack on this week's episode - the crime in Gridlock'd is rather more small-time than the web of corruption that got Tupac killed. Twenty-seven years later, and Gridlock'd has a deserved cult following for its tricky but successful blend of caper comedy and angry commentary on American healthcare. Join our hosts as they explore this, plus the wonders of Thandiwe Newton's accent, the movies Tim Roth nearly starred in, the iconic '90s hits that made this risky film possible, and the timelessness of G-funk production. Plus, Graham explains Tupac's odd, involuntary role in the Kendrick-Drake feud to Mark. All eyez on this! It Ends With Us is a solid movie. It has some absolutely wonderful line deliveries and performances along with pretty solid casting choices. You may have to sit through a bit of, what some would call, filler to get to the better stuff unfortunately. We have on the show today writer Shaye Ogbonna. When not in pursuit of retro sneakers, Shaye Ogbonna can be found worshiping at the Temple of Story. His most recent feature project is the contemporary western feature GOD'S COUNTRY — starring the incomparable Thandiwe Newton.Based on a short story by acclaimed author James Lee Burke, God's Country is a character-driven thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the American West. Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural college town. She's also grieving her recently-deceased mother, for whom she'd served as primary caretaker. On the day of the burial, Sandra discovers a mysterious red truck parked in her driveway. She soon learns it belongs to a pair of local hunters seeking to enter the forest behind her house. Sandra turns them away politely but firmly – her experience tells her these are not the sort of men to welcome freely into her world. But they won't take no for an answer, and soon Sandra finds herself drawn into an escalating battle of wills that puts her most deeply-held values to the test.In the television/streaming space, Shaye is currently developing JUMPMEN -- a one-hour drama set in the cutthroat world of the sneaker industry – with Showtime. He is also staffed on Showtime's THE CHI and JJ Abrams's DUSTER on HBO. His feature writing debut — 2017's genre-bending LOWLIFE — opened the 2017 Fantasia Film Festival and became a darling of the genre festival circuit, culminating in its acquisition and worldwide distribution through IFC Midnight.Shaye's creative mission is to center marginalized voices within genre storytelling.Enjoy my conversation with Shaye Ogbonna.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a 2023 stop-motion animated film by Aardman Animations, and serves as a sequel to the hit movie Chicken Run from 2000 (Not 2002, like Brian guessed on the show!) The film features the voices for Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, and Bella Ramsey, and follows the story of our main chickens, Ginger and Rocky, as they try to save their daughter Molly from a high security poultry processing plant/prison.The movie is currently available on Netflix.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss Mission: Impossible 2. Stars Tom Cruise, Anthony Hopkins, Thandiwe Newton, Richard Roxburgh, and Dougray Scott. Bio-terrorists plan on releasing a virus for reasons, and Tom Cruise and the rest of the IMF gang have to stop them. Featuring slower pacing and worse plotting than the first film, Mission: Impossible 2 also has flashier action scenes (doves! shooting guns on motorcycles! more doves!) courtesy of Hong Kong director John Woo. Whether it's the Limp Bizkit cover of Lalo Schifrin's iconic TV theme, Tom Cruise's flowing locks, or the extreme sports mountain climbing intro, this one has aged worse than most in the series. While it's nice John Woo got to work with such a massive budget for once, it's a shame it wasn't for a better film. The Mission: Impossible 2 shoot went on for so long that Dougray Scott had to drop out of a role for a fledgling movie series that would have boosted his career to huge heights: Wolverine in the original X-Men. This week on Myopia Movies, John Woo BRINGS THE DOVES! We watched the ageless Tom Cruise save the day again in honor of his newest Mission Impossible movie, 23 years after this one came out. “Well, this is not ‘mission: difficult', Mr. Hunt. This is ‘mission: impossible.' ‘Difficult' should be a walk in the park for you.”Hunt's Back for Love, Doves, and Viruses!Returning for a sequel to their hit, Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner decided to explore the franchise with a different director – something they'd continue doing for the first five films. For this, they went with Hong Kong action filmmaker John Woo. Known for his over-the-top action set pieces, his use of slow motion, and his use of doves, it may seem a bit of a surprise that what Woo really wanted to inject this sequel with was romance. But is that where the film goes wrong? Or did it have issues even without the love story? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘Mission: Impossible' series with a conversation about Woo's 2000 film Mission: Impossible 2.Here's a hint at what we talk about. While it may seem natural to hire John Woo to direct a Mission: Impossible movie, it's quite a surprise that this is the worst of the franchise. Woo's filmmaking style doesn't seem to fit. It feels like it's a different universe than where the rest of the franchise takes place. But is that strictly Woo's fault? Was it partially the story put together by Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga? Or the final script written by Robert Towne? It's hard to say, but the romance Woo wanted to inject into the story certainly doesn't help. And that's one of our primary complaints. Nya, as played by Thandiwe Newton, could be an interesting expert thief character but they drop that angle instantly and restrict her to love interest and pawn. Plus, by the time we get to the end of the film, they completely bail on Nya as a potential threat to humanity with the virus she's carrying. No wonder Newton had such a miserable time making this movie. But there's also the angle of the virus and antidote. It seems very James Bond villain-esque, but even there it's less about threatening the world and more about making a little money. Maybe it's because we struggle with Dougray Scott as the villain, or the fact that his relationship with Newton's Nya seems less likely than a possible gay relationship with his right hand man played by Richard Roxburgh. Cruise does start his crazy stunts here with the wire work as he's doing the free solo climb. His later stunts and action set pieces aren't too bad, but they never feel great. It has its moments, but this film just never feels like it's doing what it needs to be doing. Still, it makes for a fantastic conversation. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in.
