Season 2 of Star Trek: The Next Generation kicks off… with a forced pregnancy plotline. So yeah, we're not off to a great start. In this episode of Holodeck Divas, we dive into “The Child” (S2E1), where Counselor Deanna Troi becomes mysteriously pregnant and absolutely no one handles it well, including the writers. Stef begins to question her entire relationship with Star Trek, while Chris gleefully points out plot holes you could fly a starship through.Let's just say: it's not our favorite episode.Trigger warning: We discuss some heavy and uncomfortable themes in this one. If you need to skip it, we get it. If you stick around, we promise at least we make it entertaining.

In Episode 309 of STAR TREK: PICARD on Paramount Plus, Counselor Deanna Troi and Admiral Picard's son, Jack, open the red door in Jack's mind. They find there's a Borg Cube lurking behind the red door. Picard's crew discover that the Borg Collective rewrote part of Picard's genetic code with Borg information when the Borg captured him 35 years ago. He's passed this rewritten code onto Jack, and now the Borg are using it to assimilate the whole fleet of the Federation and attack Earth on Frontier Day. How will Picard's crew reverse this disaster?
We're back! [Insert Q + Mariachi Band on the Enterprise Bridge] After a slightly longer Summer break we're ready to head back into our regular upload schedule and there is perhaps no better episode to start us off than a deep-ish dive into Ship's Counselor Deanna Troi. And yes, we talked about chocolate. So if you want to cringe at what the 80's and 90's thought was a good female character and also learn some fun facts about chocolate, we're your best bet! This one does NOT AGE WELL. Counselor Deanna Troi gets to have the spotlight in this episode, which is good. Max McCoy as the negotiator Ral is a real terrible gaslighting villain, however, in how he attempts to abuse and manipulate both Troi and the bidding process for a "stable" wormhole. We're just not sure the production knew he was a villain going in! Great moments with Riker as the foil to Ral at the proverbial poker table, and the funny Ferengi performances as a prelude to a Star Trek: Voyager episode almost a decade later are the strong points. But in general, this episode made our toes curl ... up and break off. Get in touch with us on Twitter @ReEngageTNG! Brian, and Kyle talk through the season finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks S1E10, titled No Small Parts. Now that Boimler knows Mariner's secret, it doesn't take long for the rest of the crew to know, too. With the last several episodes being outstanding, we had some trepidation about this episode. Would Mike McMahan and crew stick the landing? We think YES!!! THEY DID!!!

Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 1 Episode 10 – No Small Parts We’re back with the tenth and final episode of Season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, titled No Small Parts. This episode was written by creator, executive producer, and showrunner Mike McMahan and directed by Barry J. Kelly, who also directed S1E1 Second Contact, S1E4 Moist Vessel, and S1E7 Much Ado About Boimler. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! If you haven’t seen the season finale of Lower Decks, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you! Mariner’s secret is out… and it’s now more than just Boimler that knows! The cold open starts with Boimler not only telling Mariner that he knows her secret that she is the Captain’s daughter, but everyone else on ship finds out, too! That might have been a little convenient for the secret to be broadcast over a communicator, but it got the job done. Sucking up to Mariner… We see a lot of people sucking up to Mariner all of the sudden, even senior officers you might not expect to do so. We thought one of the funniest was Lieutenant Levy, who I don’t think we’ve seen before, a conspiracy theorist who thinks that Wolf 359 was an inside job (well, if you think that it was led by Locutus, it WAS an inside job of sorts!!!), that the Dominion War didn’t happen, and that Changelings don’t exist. There were other funny encounters, but that one was among the funniest. Ensign Peanut Hamper… We encounter the Exocomps, which were first seen in the TNG episode The Quality of Life, and one has even joined Starfleet and is Tendi’s new recruit. It was interesting to think of the Exocomps as Starfleet officers, but since they became sentient, I guess that makes sense. However, unlike when we saw them in The Quality of Life, this Exocomp didn’t want to make the sacrifice. It was more interested in saving itself than saving the crew. Peanut Lore… Here’s something I didn’t mention on the podcast. It’s funny that the Exocomp was left floating in space, much like Lore was… You may recall that the Pakleds were the ones who found Lore when he showed back up in the TNG episode S4E3 Brothers. I wonder if that will be a story they pick up on in Season 2. Spot the References… Again, there were a lot of references this week. I used this Den of Geek article to help find them. Obviously, the Titan was not only referenced, but seen, but there were a lot more! Did they stick the landing? Most of us agreed that they did stick the landing, though we had a couple of dissenters, including last week’s guest host, LT. Kyle gave it his third 10 in a row, and I gave it my second. This had lots of action, heroes, dramatic tension, and a new bad guy from someone you might not expect. It also left the show in a much different position than where it started. Shaxs is dead, Boimler has been promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and transferred to the Titan, Rutherford no longer has his implant and has suffered memory loss, and Tendi, well, she’s Tendi. It seems like the adversarial relationship between the mother captain and the daughter ensign is over, replaced with a much more collaborative one. Very few adversaries are capable of bringing the great Captain Jean-Luc Picard to his knees, and now two of them are coming together to make his life miserable. Lwaxana Troi, ambassador from Betazed and mother of Counselor Deanna Troi, has become enamoured with the extradimensional entity known only as “Q,” and life aboard the Enterprise may never be the same again. In this episode of the Positively Trek Book Club, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther discuss the classic TNG novel Q-in-Law by veteran Trek author Peter David. We talk about Lwaxana Troi, the historic meeting between her and Q, Lwaxana’s relationship with her daughter Deanna, a sub-plot involving Wesley Crusher, lessons in love for Q, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. For the second episode of The Star Trek Picard Cast, Brian and Ruthie focus on the other Star Trek characters that are returning for Picard that aren't Picard. We speculate on what they might be doing on the show. We also speculate on what other characters we think might also return to Picard, and what other characters we'd like to see return.
Other characters we’re going to see again, besides Picard! We’re back with another episode of The Star Trek Picard Cast! This time, this episode is exclusive to the Picard feed. In this episode, Ruthie and I discuss the other characters that are returning in Star Trek: Picard, besides Jean-Luc Picard himself. Thanks to Fred from the Netherlands for providing most of our pics! Who we know is returning in Star Trek: Picard At this point, we know of five other characters returning in Star Trek: Picard. Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) The first we’ll discuss is someone who doesn’t have a relationship with Picard, Seven of Nine, the ex-Borg from Star Trek: Voyager, played by Jeri Ryan. She was always a compelling character, and well-played, and we are both looking forward to seeing her most of all the characters announced. Jeri Ryan returning as Seven of Nine. Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco) Hugh was first seen in the TNG episode, “I, Borg”. He was a Borg drone who develops his own identity after being separated from the collective. We later see him in the episode Descent. If they are planning to feature the Borg in this series, bringing his character back is a good choice. Jonathan Del Arco returns as Hugh. William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) Riker was Picard’s First Officer on the Enterprise-D and E. He later became Captain on the USS Titan. This was one character that I thought they had to have back if they are going to do a show on Picard. They were a great team and it only makes sense for him to return.

Welcome to the first episode of The Star Trek Picard Cast! We bring you this introduction to us, Brian Meloche and Ruthie Rink, if you don't know us already from The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, and details everything we know so far about Star Trek: Picard!
Welcome to the Introduction to The Star Trek Picard Cast! We’ve finally done it! Hello, and welcome to the first episode of The Star Trek Picard Cast! We bring you this introductory podcast episode to bring you our brand new podcast on Star Trek: Picard! Of course, if you have been listening along to us on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, we probably don’t need an introduction, but we are Brian Meloche and Ruthie Rink, two long-time Star Trek fans since we were children in the ’70s (Brian) and ’80s (Ruthie). About Us… We’re not going to bore you about us… but you can listen to us talk about our Star Trek fandom. We know that many of you don’t know us from our other Star Trek podcast, The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, so we talk a little about that show, and why we love it, but our love of Trek goes back to the beginning, and we know our Trek very well. Whether you like the show or won’t give it the time of day, we think you will like our take on Trek. You won’t hear it on this episode, but our listeners are a cornerstone of our podcasts here at Talk Through Media, and you will hear as much or more fan interaction on this Trek podcast than you may have ever heard before! What we know about Star Trek: Picard… We talk about the broad strokes of what we know about this show, which isn’t a lot, but we do know a few things. It begins in 2399, and centers around Jean-Luc Picard, who is no longer in Starfleet. We believe he was involved in a rescue attempt to save the people of Romulus. Data will appear in the show, although we know that Data died in Star Trek: Nemesis. The android predecessor to Data, B4, could also play into the show; both roles would be played by Brent Spiner. One of the characters is a cyberneticist, so we believe she may be constructing new androids or involved in trying to reconstruct Data. We also know that the Borg play heavily in the story. Returning are Jonathan Del Arco, who played the liberated Borg, Hugh, in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation; and Jeri Ryan, in the role of Seven of Nine made famous on Star Trek: Voyager. Of course, Picard was taken by the Borg and made into Locutus, nearly assimilating the Federation and destroying their way of life. It makes sense that the Borg play a central plot element of this show. We also know Picard’s long-time first officer, William T. Riker, and Counselor Deanna Troi return in the show, although they are not members of the main cast. Still, it will be good to see them again and find out what has been going on in their lives. Got any feedback for us? It’s going to be another three months until we have the first episode, although the sixth and final Short Trek of this season is supposed to be a tie-in to this show. Until then, we may have more trailers, and we’ll probably discuss some of the relevant Star Trek films and, of course, Star Trek: The Next Generation. What do you think about the trailers we have seen so far? Please leave your feedback for us! One of the best ways to submit feedback is on our Facebook group. The Hunt for Red October and Face of the Enemy. In space, all warriors are cold warriors. And none are colder, perhaps, than the steely Romulans who crew those imposingly green warbirds. In the sixth-season TNG episode “Face of the Enemy,” the normally warm-hearted Counselor Deanna Troi must join their ranks as she impersonates Major Rakal, a ruthless operative in the Tal Shiar, the Romulan intelligence service. This popular story was inspired, in part, by Tom Clancy’s thriller The Hunt for Red October—particularly the movie adaptation starring Sean Connery as a Soviet submarine commander who attempts to defect to the West. In fact, when writer Naren Shankar was at work on the script, it was Connery’s voice he imagined for the captain of the Romulan ship. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Carlos Miranda, a massive fan of The Hunt for Red October, to discuss the film’s influence on “Face of the Enemy.” We then open up the discussion and look at the role of the Romulans as primary Cold War antagonist in Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as some other episodes involving defections across Star Trek’s own iron curtain: the Neutral Zone. Finally, we consider how the Enterprise’s various Romulan encounters might play into the new Picard series coming in early 2020. Counselor Troi in Voyager. Some fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation who didn't follow Voyager's seven-year trek home from the Delta Quadrant may not realize that Marina Sirtis reprised her role as Counselor Deanna Troi in three different episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Some people even (audaciously) maintain that Counselor Troi was a more sophisticated and effective counselor in Voyager as she counseled her colleague and friend, Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, than she was in Star Trek: The Next Generation. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Kay Shaw, and Zachary Fruhling are joined by Amy Nelson, co-host of Trek.fm's dedicated Next Generationpodcast Earl Grey, for a discussion of Marina Sirtis's three appearances as Counselor Deanna Troi in Star Trek: Voyager. "Pathfinder" Commentary. Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation were treated to not just one, but two, Next Generation cast members reprising their roles in the sixth-season episode of Star Trek: Voyager, "Pathfinder": Dwight Schultz as the nervous but endearing Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, and Marina Sirtis as Counselor Deanna Troi. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Kay Shaw sit down together for a "Pathfinder" audio commentary while fellow To The Journey host Suzanne Williamson is temporarily lost in some holographic fantasy along with Lieutenant Barclay and Commander Chakotay (who, coincidentally, forgoes a Starfleet uniform in favor of his Maquis leather, both in Lieutenant Barclay's holographic fantasy, and in Suzanne's). Favorite Earl Grey episodes.Star Trek: The Next Generation has inspired, motivated, and entertained fans for almost thirty years -- especially three specific (and familiar) fans: Darren Moser, Daniel Proulx, and Phillip Gilfus. The trio of Earl Grey look back over the 122 Next Gen topics they have discussed for three years and pick their top three favorite shows, as well as some honorable mention podcast episodes.Their choices include their crossovers with other trek.fm podcasts, like "Earl Grey 15: The Movie Should Write Itself," an in-depth look at the inaugural TNG film Star Trek: Generations with the co-hosts of "Standard Orbit," and "Earl Grey 100: All Ships Are Big Shuttles," a role-playing game celebrating TNG and the trekfm family. The trio remember their once-in-a-lifetime interview with Counselor Deanna Troi herself, Marina Sirtis ("Earl Grey 112: Troi, Goddess of Internity"), as well as one of their many signature game-playing adventures when, together, they defeated "Not Gowron" during "Star Trek: The Next Generation Interactive VCR Board Game: A Klingon Challenge" ("Earl Grey 69: Experience Bij").The co-hosts also talk about the much-beloved game #BridgeMates ("Earl Grey 82: When In Doubt, Choose Data"), their first episode re-write of a TNG episode, "Masks" (Earl Grey 105: Snakebot: The Great Librarian), and discuss the origins, operations, and favorite aspects of this weekly Next Gen podcast. So enjoy a nice warm cup of Earl Grey and join Darren, Daniel, and Phillip as they reflect on their favorite episodes of this podcast.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Troi. The introduction of a counselor to the bridge of U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-D was seen as a product of the therapy-happy 1980s. The character of Deanna Troi went through many changes during her seven seasons on television and four feature films - from wearing a blue skant in "Encounter at Farpoint" to a wedding dress inStar Trek: Nemesis. Troi's role as a bridge officer often fluctuated from merely stating the obvious to making a significant contribution to the conflict du jour. Phillip, Darren, and Daniel discuss the evolution of the character from an accented, "exotic" empath to an in-charge uniform-wearing commander. They discuss her relationships with her Imzadi Commander William T. Riker, her mother Lwaxana, her captain and patient Jean-Luc Picard, and her brief boyfriend, Worf. The trio also struggles with why the writers ignored and "victimized" Troi on far too many occasions. So replicate your favorite chocolate concoction, avoid anything called "tequila," and join Earl Grey for a character profile of Counselor Deanna Troi.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser Production Manager Richard Marquez Content Coordinator Will Nguyen ChaptersInitial Thoughts (00:02:20) The not so great (00:07:01) Great joy and gratitude (00:18:00) Major relationships (00:29:51) Worf (00:42:40)Final Thoughts (00:49:37) Send us your feedback! "Face of the Enemy" Commentary. Romulans. Vulcans. Tal Shiar. Conspiracies. In the sixth season episode of The Next Generation, "Face of the Enemy," a rare Troi-focused episode explores the consequences of Ambassador Spock's work with Romulans from the two-parter "Unification." Darren, Daniel, and Phillip provide their commentary for this episode that depicts the strengths and further potential of Counselor Deanna Troi, as she must play the part of a Tal Shiar agent aboard a Romulan warbird. This story also provides greater insight into the Romulan Imperial Fleet, as we see different uniforms, ranks, and the explanation of what it is like to live in such a police state. Add to that a Starfleet ensign with a blonde Romulan haircut and this episode will get you craving a plate of viinerine and a glass of Romulan ale. Women in TNG. From the pilot "Encounter at Fairpoint," The Next Generation signaled that it wanted to update the way Star Trek would handle gender roles - it was no longer "where no man had gone before" but "where no one had gone before." The first season featured three female characters - Security Chief Tasha Yar, Counselor Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher. However, two of those three characters did not return in the second season. The full run of TNG and the feature films contain many female characters, both primary cast and guest stars, and created episodes that focused on women, from "The Child" to "The Perfect Mate." @FirstTimeTrek Andi VanderKolk joins Daniel, Darren, and Phillip to discuss the successes and disappointments in how women were portrayed in TNG. By the time you're reading this, Kevin and Kornflake will be in Chicago for FumpFest! But here's the last show we recorded before surrendering the studio to a big angry yak, so it could do its own podcast, which is called "Yak Talk." But we digress. This week on The Flopcast: For National Catfish Day, Kornflake teaches us something weird about catfish; then in our "Chickens in the News" segment, we learn something weird about chickens (but less weird than the catfish thing). We also look forward to CONvergence, which is happening 4th of July weekend in Minneapolis! Kevin will be on panels discussing important stuff like Batman comics; the Skepchicks will teach us about science, bugs, and licking things; and if that doesn't sound geeky enough, we might even run into Counselor Deanna Troi.
