China says Washington's unilateral sanctions violate the Cuban people's rights to survival and development, after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new sanctions on Cuba.
God is a God of relationship and covenant, operating through unilateral agreements extended by grace (diiathe) rather than bilateral, human-style contracts. Before creating man, God first entered into a covenant with Himself—specifically the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—to make mankind in His image and likeness. This original "Edenic Covenant" granted man the authority to rule over the earth, a mandate that man failed to fulfill after falling into sin and relinquishing dominion to Satan. Despite this break in fellowship, Bern emphasizes that God remains faithful to His word, eventually establishing a "new and better covenant" through the blood of Jesus to resolve the problem of sin and restore the original relationship.A primary focus of this study is the tripartite nature of man, who is composed of spirit, soul, and body to mirror God's own tripartite nature. Drawing from the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts, Bern argues that man was created sequentially: first as a spirit to walk with God, then as a living soul (nephesh) formed from "fine particles" or dust, and finally as a physical being. The "coats of skin" described in Genesis are interpreted not as animal hides, but as the physical body itself, which served to "wall in" the soul and spirit as a consequence of the fall. While this physical existence introduced pain and labor, the study concludes that a millennial restoration will eventually allow mankind to fulfill the original command to possess the earth in a perfect, eternal age.For more information on our books, or if you would like to make a love donation, please go to: https://www.walkinginpower.org

Danny Lum is a Singaporean strength coach and sport scientist specializing in applied performance research. His work explores strength diagnostics, isometrics, and power development, and he is widely published and recognized for connecting sport science with practical coaching. In this episode, Danny explores the intersection of sport science and real-world performance. Danny shares insights from his research on isometric training, PNF stretching, and velocity-based training, emphasizing how different methods complement rather than replace one another. The conversation dives into squat depth, unilateral vs. bilateral training, and the role of variability in power development. Throughout, Danny highlights a key theme: effective training is individualized, phase-dependent, and built on understanding how the body adapts. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength. It doesn't necessarily mean that slow movement during heavy lifting means you are not having a fast neural firing, which is relevant to sprinting." "For sprinters, when the knee is lifted up at the highest point, they don't just allow the leg to drop passively. They actually start developing force and hammer down right from the highest point. That is where your hip flexion angle is about 90 degrees. So if you're not strong at that position, then you're not maximizing the amount of force you can develop through the full range of movement." "If you're going to do static stretch during your warm-up, you might as well just perform isometric contraction at that position as well. That helps to not only activate your muscle, but you actually microdose isometric training every day." "You're strengthening your muscle at the long muscle length, and that long muscle length is where the muscular-tendinous system is most vulnerable. If you are not strong at that range, then your risk of injury just increases. But if you can get yourself stronger at the long range, you're actually protecting yourself." "If we are talking about loading the tissue itself...loading the muscle and tendon tissue, then doing unilateral work is probably going to benefit more because you can actually load the quads more by doing single-leg squat as compared to double-leg bilateral squat." "Having a variety of load actually gives greater adaptation. I think that why that's the case is because you allow the person to have a little bit of velocity focus and a little bit of force focus in the training." "If I contract rapidly, and I sustain for three seconds, because that allows me to build to a higher peak force, my strength actually increased more, and I also significantly increased my rate of force development. It allowed me to get the best of both worlds; both rate of force development and peak force actually improved." "Isometrics actually improved running economy more than plyometrics. My theory behind it is that runners, while they are running, is sort of like a low-intensity plyometric. So with a higher-intensity plyometric versus isometric, which is a totally new stimulus, they actually adapt more with the new stimulus as compared to plyometrics." "Today, the athlete might be able to lift 100 kilograms for five reps before he feels fatigue, and on a bad day, three reps. If I standardize in the program five reps every day, then on some days he might be overtraining, and that's where velocity training provides the advantage. I'm still getting him to lift at his daily maximal of effort, but it's self-regulated." "I don't really go too movement specific. Usually, I'll be more general in that sense because I prefer to build up the physical capacity rather than being overly specific. But having said that, most of the exercises have to be relevant to how they function." "Isometric training is probably the best way to improve angle-specific force generation capability. On the other hand, we also know that tissue adaptation is greater when training at longer muscle length. So you're actually stretching the muscle and the tendon a little more, and that will result in greater improvement in hypertrophy as well as greater tendon stiffness." "As they're closer to the major competition, I'll replace the dynamic heavy lifting with isometric training. I won't replace everything, but I'll replace part of it just so that they can recover better with a lower level of fatigue, so that leading up, they won't have a fried central nervous system." Do you think your hospital should allow unilateral DNR orders? Under what circumstances? Through what process? Do you think that when you obtain the assent of a family to not code their loved one, that assent DNR should be counted as a unilateral DNR order? Should we document unilateral DNR and the rationale? Why for DNR, when we don't document unilateral dialysis not offered, or unilateral no ECMO offered? Is the assent of a family member to a statement that we will not code their loved one a nudge, and is the assent approach ethical? Reasonable people will disagree, as we do on this podcast. Our guests today are Gina Piscitello, Erin DeMartino, and Will Parker, authors of a terrific viewpoint in JAMA about the need to address inadequate documentation of unilateral DNR orders. You might recall Gina was a guest on our lively podcast about slow codes, and we pick up where that podcast left off. We highlight the many clinical, practical, and ethical issues at stake, including Gina's finding that during Covid, 3% of critically ill patients receiving pressors had a DNR order. Black patients and those who spoke Spanish had higher rates of unilateral DNR. That variation should trouble those in favor of unilateral DNR orders. We talk about variation Gina found at the state and health system level, and what exactly is concerning, the variation itself, or the lack of thought and care that went into some of these policies. Are you a heartbreaker? Dream Maker? Love taker? Don't you mess around with me. (song hint) -Alex

289 When Fall Didn't End Very Well Teaser: “I would love it if you would consider doing a podcast episode on what happens when a principal gets off track and needs to get the trains back on track... Just as our students get off track around October (the honeymoon phase is over), I found myself last fall losing sight of our mission and goals for the year. My AP and I got excited and started getting buried in trying new initiatives, and I think it caused some frustrations with the staff. We started to focus on the noise instead of patterns. I didn't know if you had any tips or strategies that you could share to help stay focused on the path I designed back in the summer.” Sponsor Spot 1:I'd like to thank Kaleidoscope Adventures for sponsoring today's show. Are CACs Unilateral Modification Clauses? We have always understood the collective action clause (CAC) in a sovereign bond to allow the bond issuer to propose a modification to the bond, which will bind everyone if approved by the requisite proportion of holders. Typically the sovereign is proposing to restructure its debt. This is more or less what bonds governed by NY law say, but bonds governed by English law appear to allow bondholders to gang together to modify the bond without the issuer's consent. Can that be right? We don't really think so, but we don't see anything in the text of the standard CAC in English law bonds that requires issuer consent. Imagine a Euro area issuer is nearing crisis and holders of its local law debt decide to switch their bonds to, say, English law. Can they do this unilaterally? Maybe so. Producer: Leanna Doty

6. The Dictatorial Power of Putin and the Unification of Ukraine Post-2014. Serhii Plokhy (Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University) focuses on the unilateral nature of decision-making in the Kremlin regarding the 2014 invasion. The decision to annex Crimea and fragment Ukraine was made by Vladimir Putin and his security chiefs during an all-night meeting on February 23–24, 2014. This process confirmed that Russia operates as a dictatorship, transitioning from the hope of Russian democracy under Yeltsin to the current reality where Putin's power is rooted in the super-presidential constitution established in 1993. Putin initially gained public support through brutality in Chechnya. While Ukraine was traditionally viewed as split between Eastern and Western orientations, Russia actively exploited these linguistic, cultural, and religious divisions in 2014 to justify the takeover of Crimea and the initiation of hybrid warfare in Donbas. Crucially, the professor emphasizes that the shock of the 2014 conflict had the opposite effect desired by Moscow: it unified Ukrainian society far more than it had ever been before. Moscow's biggest error in planning the 2022 invasion was proceeding under the assumption that Ukraine was still the divided country it had been in 2014.

"Insurance companies are the wealthiest businesses, wealthier than banks and even countries. It seems very scammy." This listener question captures what most people think about insurance - and why they're wrong about life insurance.Hans and Brian examine contract law to explain why life insurance operates under completely different legal protections than the car and home insurance that's given the industry its bad reputation. From centuries of case law to the incontestability clause, this episode reveals the legal guidelines protecting policyholders. When courts consistently rule against insurance companies and companies are required to maintain 100% reserves plus reinsurance, it's not a coincidence that no whole life insurance beneficiary has ever gone unpaid. The math, the law, and the business model all align to protect you in ways most people never understand. The Contract That Can't Be Negotiated (And Why That's Good for You)Life insurance contracts are "contracts of adhesion" - you can't negotiate terms, it's take it or leave it. Since the insurance company writes the entire contract and you have no bargaining power, courts heavily favor policyholders in every dispute. Centuries of case law have built an almost impenetrable wall of consumer protection.Warranties vs. Representations: The Historical Shift in Your FavorIn the 1700s, maritime insurance contracts used "warranties" - black and white statements that could void your policy for any breach. If you warranted your ship would sail with convoy protection and it sailed alone, coverage was nullified regardless of circumstances. Modern life insurance has evolved to use "representations" instead, requiring proof of intentional misrepresentation, materiality to the contract, and knowledge of falsity. The burden of proof is entirely on the insurance company. The Two-Year Window: Your Contestability ProtectionInsurance companies have exactly two years to challenge a policy for misrepresentation. After that window closes, even suicide is covered. This isn't arbitrary - it reflects the legal reality that life changes too much after two years to fairly challenge original statements. The contestability clause protects both parties: it gives companies time for due diligence while preventing indefinite claim challenges. Why "100% Reserves" Isn't Like BankingUnlike fractional reserve banking where your deposits aren't fully backed, life insurance operates on full reserves for current liabilities. Your policy's cash value must be available immediately - no exceptions. Future death benefits are covered through reinsurance and state guarantee funds, creating multiple layers of protection that banking simply doesn't have.➡️ Chapters: 00:00 - Military waste and efficiency (the stark contrast to insurance) 07:00 - Listener question: Why trust insurance companies? 13:00 - Property insurance vs. life insurance: Different games entirely 17:00 - Contract law foundations: Why courts favor policyholders19:00 - Warranties vs. representations: The historical evolution 26:00 - The incontestability clause: Your two-year protection window 35:00 - Unilateral contracts: Only one party has obligations 38:00 - Contract of adhesion: Why you can't negotiate (and don't want to)46:00 - Reserve requirements: 100% backing vs. fractional banking 52:00 - Reinsurance and state guarantee funds: Multiple safety nets 55:00 - Actuarial math: Why conservative assumptions create dividends 58:00 - Points of failure: Safety assets vs. speculationGot Questions? Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Discipline creates identity. Shaun shares how military habits like structure and routine create consistency, build momentum, and ultimately forge a new identity—on or off the course. Mobility vs. flexibility. Know the difference. Flexibility is muscle length. Mobility is joint function. Most golfers confuse the two. Stability is strength. You can't build power without stability. Unilateral work like split squats and lunges balances your body and reduces swing faults. Power vs. speed training. Power is potential. Speed is expression. Both require different protocols in the gym—and both matter to golf. Low back pain? Look elsewhere. Most back pain isn't from the back itself—it's a consequence of limited mobility in the hips or thoracic spine. Fitness fuels mental energy. A fitter body reduces fatigue, improves focus, and boosts resilience—so you don't fall apart late in your round. Key Quotes: What was once impossible becomes inevitable. Small hinges swing big doors. Fitness is the gateway to personal development. Stability is strength. And strength is injury prevention. You can't outscore your body. In the latest episode of Facts vs Feelings, Ryan Detrick, Chief Market Strategist, and Sonu Varghese, VP, Global Macro Strategist, are joined by returning guest Skanda Amarnath, Executive Director of Employ America, as they dive deep into macroeconomic dynamics, market reactions, and policy shifts.Together, they examine inflation metrics, shifting recession probabilities, the role of tariffs, and the evolving landscape of productivity and AI-related capital investment. Skanda brings grounded clarity on interpreting economic data without succumbing to noise or sensationalism, offering practical insights for advisors and investors alike.Key Takeaways:PCE vs CPI for Tracking Inflation: CPI gets more attention due to its simplicity and timing, but the Fed prioritizes PCE. Skanda emphasizes that CPI may be better for gauging immediate market sentiment, while PCE is conceptually stronger for long-term economic trends.Macro Noise & Recession Probability: Macroeconomic forecasting in today's environment is fraught with uncertainty. Constant updates from institutions and media (e.g., fluctuating recession odds) highlight the need for discipline in economic modeling and scenario planning.Economic Resilience Remains Strong: Despite shocks from trade policies and tariffs, data like payroll growth and strong consumer balance sheets suggest the U.S. economy remains fundamentally sound.Tariff Impacts on Inflation and Growth: Tariffs increase costs that are typically passed through to businesses and consumers; however, much depends on the magnitude. Unilateral trade policies introduce substantial risk and uncertainty for exporters and investors.AI-Driven Productivity Is Real — But Vulnerable: Capital expenditures in Q1 were strongly influenced by AI infrastructure investments. While this is currently a major tailwind for GDP and productivity, overreliance on one sector (like tech) can create future vulnerabilities if momentum shifts. Why Lower Oil Prices Haven't Translated to Relief at the Pump Oil prices are down, but gas prices haven't followed suit.
