Duke Sanford School of Public Policy Professor Anirudh Krishna has been studying a seemingly simple question: why do people in certain countries just seem better at some things than others? Think of the large number of world-class runners from Jamaica like Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, or the long list of top female golfers from South Korea. Why are people in tiny Estonia keep hatching software companies worth billions? Krishna's research shows that these examples are due in large part to structures that are specifically designed to support the rise of talent. By giving a fair chance to everyone these "ladders of opportunity" both produce champions and serve as avenues of upward mobility, supporting community development. Krishna's TED Talk, The 7 Pillars of Unlocking Potential, has garnered half a million views. His latest book is The Broken Ladder: The Paradox and Potential of India's One-Billion.

The route for the 2026 Edition of the Tour de France has just been released. In this episode, Dave discusses the facts and opinions about the route choice.Facts & totalsDates: 4 July to 26 July 2026.Grand Départ: Barcelona, Spain. 21 stages. Total distance: ~3,333 km.Total climbing (vertical gain): ~54,000 m.Stage-type mix (from published summary):One Team Time Trial (TTT) to open. One (or minimal) Individual Time Trial (ITT).8 mountain stages with ~5 summit finishes.4 hilly stages (medium mountains/undulating)7 flat stages (sprinters' domain). The decision to start with a team time trial is a bold one — the first such by the Tour since 1971 in that format. The route promises a “crescendo” built in: easier stages early in Spain, then progressively tougher terrain across the Pyrenees, Massif Central, Voges, Alps, then Alpe d'Huez double finish. The highest point of the race will be the climb of the Galibier (via Télégraphe etc) in the Alps.Sprinters will still get their chances, but the mid-to-late mountains may render some flat stages less predictable. If you have just started your cycling journey, you can get your Beginner Cyclist Toolkit Here. It's packed full of information and advice to get you started safely on your journey.

In one brutal sentence: **Eric Kim just slammed a 547 kg rack‑pull—7.55 × his own 72.5 kg mass—obliterating the “5 × body‑weight” myth, nuking every strength leaderboard since Lamar Gant, and lighting the internet's algorithms on fire.
Elite Irish sprinters participating in a study at Lero, one of the world's leading software research centres at the University of Limerick, to determine the effectiveness of super spike sprint shoes, could boost their chances of success at the 2028 Olympics. Lero researchers at the University of Limerick's Sport and Human Performance Research Centre (SHPRC) have embarked on the research in collaboration with innovative Irish sports analytics company DANU are still recruiting elite Irish athletes to use DANU's groundbreaking wearable smart socks technology to capture and analyse athlete-specific data, focusing on the biomechanical assessment of super spike shoes. Professor Ian Kenny questioned whether athletes at the 2024 Olympics choose super spikes due to sponsorship deals or for their technological benefits and injury prevention. "Using real-world metrics on the track and not the lab, we will gain key insights into the benefits of DANU's technology, super spikes, and their impact on our elite sprinters - gaining a fraction of a second could give an Irish athlete a podium finish and a medal," he added. Lero researcher Shane Hassett said the research will quantify performance outcomes such as speed, ground contact time, flight time, muscle activation, and ankle kinematics to distinguish super spike shoes from other running spikes. "We will investigate if the DANU sports system can be used to monitor biomechanical changes in gait when wearing the super spike shoes, focusing on how specific components biomechanically change an athlete's sprint profile," he added. DANU founder and CEO Oisín Lennon said they are delighted to continue their collaboration with the University of Limerick and LERO, who he described as leaders in software and research innovation. "UL supported us in our early development, playing a vital role in validating our technology and shaping the direction of our platform. That early partnership was instrumental in helping us move from concept to a scientifically grounded product. "Now, it's incredibly rewarding to see LERO and UL using our technology to drive groundbreaking research in elite sprinting - pushing the limits of what's possible in biomechanics and performance science. "Collaborating with researchers of this calibre not only validates our approach but also ensures we stay at the forefront of innovation. We're excited to contribute to work that has the potential to impact sport at the highest level."

EPISODE SUMMARY: Warrior Woman—get ready, because today we're talking about the supplement I believe every woman should know about. We're diving deep into creatine—but not the way the fitness bros do it. This is for us. For the women who lift, sprint, grow humans, lead businesses, and want to build strong bodies (and brains) for life. We've got our first-ever female-focused research review on creatine—and I'm breaking it down for you. I'll walk you through how creatine impacts strength, sprinting, mood, cognition, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. We'll bust the myths (no, it won't make you bulky) and I'll show you exactly how to use it to train harder, recover faster, and feel more powerful—in your body and your life. This episode will give you the science and strategy to decide if creatine belongs in your training toolkit. (Spoiler: it probably does.) Let's get it, girl. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Women have 70-80% lower creatine stores than men—meaning we can benefit even more from supplementation. Creatine improves strength, power, and recovery without causing weight gain or bloating (thanks, estrogen!). For postmenopausal women, creatine helps maintain muscle mass, bone density, and supports metabolic health. Creatine supports mood, cognition, and brain health—especially under stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes. It may protect fetal brain development during pregnancy and support postpartum recovery. Sprinters and strength athletes? Creatine enhances performance, improves speed endurance, and reduces fatigue between sets. HOW TO SUPPLEMENT: Loading phase (optional): 5g, 4x/day for 5-7 days. Maintenance: 3-5g daily (even on rest days). Take anytime, with or without food (carbs may enhance absorption). POWERFUL QUOTES: "We hold 70-80% less creatine than men. So, of course, we need more." "Creatine isn't just for the bros in the gym—it's for every woman who wants to build power, strength, and resilience." "A hydrated muscle is a happy muscle. Creatine pulls water into your muscle cells—not under your skin." "When you have more muscle, you hold less abdominal fat and your metabolic health thrives." "Creatine doesn't make you bulky—it makes you better." Love this episode? Share it with a friend who trains. Tag me on Instagram @amykatebowe with your biggest takeaway. Today's podcast features Laurent Meuwley. Laurent is the Head Coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays for the Netherlands. A former Swiss national coach and European Athletics Coach of the Year, he's known for guiding world-class athletes like Femke Bol and Dutch relay teams, pioneering the “Flyers vs. Diesels” sprint-type analogy and his comprehensive approach to training. Often in sprinting and speed training education, we get a small piece of the equation based on our social media algorithms or our immediate training culture. To fully understand speed training, we must look at both speed and environmental coaching concepts that span cultures. On today's podcast, Laurent discusses speed building on the level of the weight room, overspeed, speed endurance, and individual training factors. Laurent also talks about building a relay-based culture and a powerful training environment, along with many more nuances of building elite sprinters. And those are based on a test they do called the tensomeography test, where we check all the muscles individually and see how fast or slow they are, how strong or weak they are, how quickly they react, they can be activated or not." - Laurent Meuwly (13:14) "Because a lot of strength program are thought in terms of which muscles are specifically used for the movement. But we also have to think in which kind of muscle contraction, what kind of Muscle contraction is then used and for different muscle groups it's a different contraction. It might be concentric for some, eccentric for others, isometric for some muscles. So in the specific work this needs to be taken into account." - Laurent Meuwly (16:37) "If I take a hamstring exercise, when someone has struggled to activate the hamstrings quick enough, they might have an exercise where they are standing, laying on their shoulders up, one leg on the skateboard, the other leg in the air and they have to bring the skateboard back and forth under their butt as fast as possible." - Laurent Meuwly (22:07) "The propulsion phase is really important in running and especially in sprinting." - Laurent Meuwly (23:43) "The individualization in the gym is more to the way athletes are reacting in terms of hypertrophy. Some athletes would go a bit quicker away from max strength exercises, hypertrophy to be more in a velocity-based training, more in power than in strength development." - Laurent Meuwly (33:00) "I think in Europe we are using overspeed quite more than in the US at least in track and field, I would say every 10 to 14 days." - Laurent Meuwly (42:20) "A “flyer”, an athlete who is more speed based needs to be fast. And because speed is his or her strength, they also are going to recover from speed or even strength or whatever stimulates highly the nervous system quicker than athletes who are more endurance based and who are less talented for speed." - Laurent Meuwly

Today's podcast features Mike Bruno. Mike is the Assistant Director of Olympic Sports Performance at Clemson University. Mike has both a sports performance and massage therapy background, with an approach influenced heavily by Bill Hartman's biomechanical model. He has worked with a wide variety of sports, including track and field, and currently oversees golf and tennis at Clemson. Human movement is composed of more than just muscle and neural signals. It is also heavily influenced by athletes' strategies to move pressure through their unique skeletal structures. By understanding the role of structure on speed and movement abilities, we can also better understand ideal training modalities and progressions for each athlete. On today's episode, Mike speaks on speed and power training through the lens of pressure management and skeletal structure. He talks about different structural archetypes and their needs in the weightroom, as well as how these archetypes lend to various performance outputs on the field of play (focusing on track speed and performance). With many anecdotes from the world of track and field, this episode draws numerous links between strength, speed and individual training factors. "Sprinters are just this A-type. Because they have to be. What you realize is this sport is probably won and lost in those moments right before, it's won and lost on the line, it's won and lost when the gun goes off. It's all about projecting your presence onto your biggest competitor. As soon as we got into it, these guys didn't hold back, whether it was Noah (Lyles) or Fred (Kerley), whether it was the rivalry between the Jamaican women, it was all there and none of them held back with it." Paul Martin is the co-founder of Box to Box Films, the production company behind the hit Netflix sports documentary series including Drive to Survive and Full Swing. Track finally got its version as SPRINT was released on Netflix on July 2nd. In this episode, we discuss the making of the series; the Netflix effect that people talk about in sports and what were some of the challenges in capturing an individual sport like track, which has tons of stars who could pop out of nowhere.
