This conversation was recorded on The Jazz Cruise earlier this year and it featured a talk with Jazzmeia Horn and Cyrille Aimee, moderated by fellow vocalist Catherine Russell, who is also one of the hosts of The Jazz Cruise. The two talked about their unique musical roots – Jazzmeia's in gospel and Cyrille's in French gypsy music and how they first got into jazz. They also share their creative process for recording and composing. And there's lots more, including questions from our discerning guests.

Singer-songwriter, pianist, arranger, New York-based bandleader and winner of the prestigious 2021 American Traditions Vocal Competition Gold Medal, Nicole Zuraitis, had been there once before. But when the presenters at the 2024 Grammy®️ Awards announced her name as winner of the Best Jazz Vocal Album for her release, “How Love Begins,” her immediate reaction was “Holy Cow!” To many of her friends and supporters, however, it was an affirmation of what they've known for more than a decade of working with, for and beside her. Nicole is an undeniable force- in music and in life. Besides leading her quartet, Nicole is the premier vocalist for the Birdland Big Band and frequently headlines iconic NYC jazz clubs like Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center, Birdland, the Blue Note, the Carlyle, 54 Below and the late, great 55 Bar. She's collaborated with an extensive list of luminaries, including Christian McBride - who co-produced her Grammy-winning album - and worked with David Cook, Gilad Hekselman, Veronica Swift, Benny Benack, Stephen Feifke, Cyrille Aimee, Antonio Sanchez, Dave Stryker, Omar Hakim, Rachel Z, Helen Sung, and Bernard Purdie. And Nicole is also a proud educator, currently serving on the vocal faculty at NYU, SUNY Purchase and the Litchfield Jazz Camp. In this last episode of Season 4, we focus specifically Nicole's Grammy-winning album because its story is a microcosm of who and what she is as an artist, composer, vocalist - and person. As Jazz Police aptly put it, Nicole has a “heart as big as her remarkable voice,” and Broadway World added, she's one of the top "prolific songwriters" to watch in the genre of jazz and beyond. Episode 80: Cyrille Aimee by Mike Epstein
Wayne Tucker is a trumpet player, singer, songwriter, composer, and soon to be author. He has shared the stage with household names such Taylor Swift, Ne-Yo and David Crosby, and jazz artists like Al Foster, Cyrille Aimee, and Kurt Elling. Since 2016, he's been releasing albums of his own compositions and songs. Wayne is also a founding member of Brass Against, a unique group which reimagines the music of Rage Against the Machine (and other artists) with a huge horn section and energetic stage show. In this interview, we hear music from his most recent EP, "I'll Never Stop", as well as his many records and collaborations.
Long before singer Cyrille Aimee spent any time on the road she was already a citizen of the world. She grew up in a small French town, Samois-sur-Seine, but says that she never felt fully French. She never felt fully any one thing. Her mother is Dominican, her father is French, and she says that “when you're a mixed culture, you're kind of your own thing.”
Featuring the calming exotica sounds of Frank LoCrasto's Kolumbo; Malian maestra Rokia Koné and Jacknife Lee from her solo debut; fresh beasts from Danish guitar hero Thor Madsen; a trip to the magical world of Parisian jazz courtesy of Cyrille Aimee and Michael Valeanu; Drumming improvisational powerhouse Ches Smith; chill out lo fi jams from Moped; LA space funk from Eulipion Corps; performance artist, dancer, musician, composer Alison Clancy's beautiful sonic landscapes; bass wizard Stephan Crump from his latest solo recording; and finally, Colorado's Daniel Rodriguez delivers another top-notch neo-folk anthem.
When Cyrille Aimée joined WBGO's Michael Bourne on Singers Unlimited, she brought the same fine musicians who formed her band during a run at Birdland. She also brought songs from her then new album, Move On: A Sondheim Adventure (Mack Avenue), a celebration of the music of Stephen Sondheim.Produced by Billy Robinson

Today, acclaimed French-Dominican jazz vocalist Cyrille Aimee joins Tom live in Studio A, for a preview of her 5-show engagement this weekend at Baltimore's Keystone Korner jazz club. The popular cabaret and recording star, who makes her home today in New Orleans, is renowned for her graceful improvisations, a gypsy-jazz vocal styling she says she learned as a young girl singing at Roma encampments in her native France. Aimée has gone from singing on street corners in Europe to headlining at some of the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals. Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as "one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation" and called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by the New York Times, Aimee's latest CD is called Move On: a Sondheim Adventure. This Valentine's Day weekend (Feb. 14-16), Cyrille Aimee will perform five shows, Friday night through Sunday, at Keystone Korner jazz club in Harbor East. For more information, go to the club's website.
The two poles of human interaction are the desire for intimacy but the fear of commitment, right? We all have it. And nobody nails it quite like Cyrille Aimee. French-born, New York seasoned and now new Orleans resident, chanteuse Cyrille Aimee is what she calls "jazz famous." And she is. The New York Times has called Cyrille one of the greatest jazz vocalists of our time so it's a real treat to have her sit at Happy Hour and, with extraordinary accompanist Joshua Starkman, play Sondheim's Marry Me A little and the jazz standard, Duke Ellington's I'm Beginning To See The Light. Gia Hamilton is the person in this conversation who puts her finger on fear and intimacy. By day, Gia is officially the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the New Orleans African American Museum. But Gia has a varied past that includes farmer, healer, and life coach - pastimes and traits that she has not totally left behind. Gia manages to integrate an amazing number of streams into her current life, including raising 5 sons, the youngest of whom, 4 month old Zaire, is with her. Matt Wisdom might be the smartest guy in New Orleans. He';s officially the founder and CEO of TurboSquid, the world's leading seller of 3D models that you see in films and video games. Matt is in reality the Jeff Bezos of New Orleans. You wouldn't necessarily know it though. He's modest, nice, and humble, but make no mistake - he's politically involved, he's got his finger on the pulse of what we all know is wrong with the city, he knows how to fix it, and he's on the way to doing it. Keep an eye on this guy! You can see photos by Hope Byrd of Happy Hour recorded live at Wayfare, here.
The dynamic young vocalist Cyrille Aimee wowed audiences of The Jazz Cruise 2019 with sets that mixed Gypsy jazz, mainstream jazz, and even a little beat boxing, as well as material from her latest album of Sondheim songs. She sat down with Eulis Cathey to talk about how moving to New Orleans revitalized and inspired her. This episode is sponsored by Sirius/XM’s Real Jazz channel.
