Brandon has a light that can fill any room—his energy is infectious. But behind that light is a story of survival. At just 7 years old, his world collapsed when his mother became addicted to crack. Homeless and hungry, Brandon took on the role of protector for his younger brothers, every day a fight for survival. By 10, he found stability in a loving foster family, but the grip of addiction lingered in his life. Despite it all, Brandon chose a path of positivity. Armed with faith and an unwavering love for performing arts, he's turned his pain into purpose. His story isn't just about overcoming—it's about thriving in the face of it all. His words, "Anything Is Possible" will forever stay with me. Huge thank you ❤️
This week's episode may have one of the all-time great backstories in musical theatre history: a woman composes a new Broadway score with her husband during the Great Depression while he works with the US president, and she falls in love with one of the biggest composers of all time. FINE AND DANDY is much more than its title implies, but it sure does have one humdinger of a "fine and dandy" score. Join producer and musical theatre historian Jennifer Ashley Tepper (54 Below, BE MORE CHILL) this week as we learn more about this piece of our collective musical past, and not the coconut tree from which we did not fall. We definitely recommend listening to last month's episode on LADY, BE GOOD! with William A. Everett before listening to this one. The crossover was unintentionally inspiring! The amazingly talented star of stage (Hair, Broadway Bounty Hunter, Into the Woods) and screen (Miami Vice, Cheers, Orange is the New Black), Annie Golden, blows our minds with her stories! Annie talks about how singing with her band, The Shirts at CBGB's in the 70s, led to her being discovered by Miloš Forman, who cast her in Hair. This launched a career on Broadway and a solo singing career which led to her having a song (“Hang Up the Phone”) featured on the Sixteen Candles soundtrack. From there, she pivoted to the small and big screens with roles in 80s classics like Baby Boom, Cheers, and Desperately Seeking Susan. She has most recently been in Orange is the New Black as the lovable mute, Norma Romano and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Marge. She was also the special guest of Phish's most recent NYE performance at Madison Square Garden. We were thrilled to have her join us. World War II. Somewhere in Germany. Accompanied by a cameraman shooting propaganda for Mother Russia, a ragtag platoon fighting the Nazis receives a distress signal from fellow soldiers and heads off to investigate. They approach a church where no Russians can be found, but the church is inhabited by creatures who appear to be constructed from weapons, parts of machines and vehicles, but still have blood flowing through their veins. The creatures seem like part of the Nazi war machine, but then, one can't be sure in the fog of war. Soon, cut off from the outside world, the platoon is surrounded, their C.O. down. It's up to the rest to get inside the factory of a mad scientist, and soon discovers just where the creatures are from, who created them, and why they exist. It is a privilege to welcome actress and singer Lauren Marcus to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Stephen Mosher of BroadwayWorld best described Lauren: "Take all the female rock stars you have known and loved and roll them up into one. Take, for instance, Linda Ronstadt's soul, Tina Turner's sexiness, Pat Benatar's grit, Debbie Harry's defiance, and all the Go-Go's playfulness. Mix and bake at 350, then frost with a five-inch thick layer of The Icing of Originality, and you've got Lauren Marcus." Hailed as "fabulous" by The Boston Globe and a "powerhouse" by The Chicago Tribune, Lauren is a multi-hyphenate actor, singer, and writer whose work has been seen on stage and screen. She has appeared in countless regional theatrical productions, including Company (with Aaron Tveit; Amy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel), Hello, Dolly! (with Tovah Feldshuh; Ermengarde), two productions of Little Shop of Horrors (Audrey) and Merrily We Roll Along (Mary Flynn). She also was part of four world premieres, including Beatsville (Carla), Love in Hate Nation (Miss Asp), Pregnancy Pact (Jenn), and Punk Rock Girl! (Patricia). She also appeared in the Off-Broadway productions of Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter (multiple roles) and White Girl in Danger (Meagan). Lauren was also part of Be More Chill's journey. She portrayed Brooke Lohst in the regional, off-Broadway, and Broadway productions. Lauren starred as Donna in the Netflix adaption of the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed Tick, Tick…BOOM! Lauren also performed across New York City's famous music venues, including 54Below and Rockwood Music Hall, where she had multiple residencies and had a party of 12 performers on stage. While she considers her live shows – half-party/half-therapy, Lauren's sound is inspired by the effervescent melodies of 1960s pop, the lyrical poetry of 1970s troubadours, and the electric edge of contemporary indie rock…and usually includes a healthy dose of theatricality. Her sound is at once a throwback and entirely forward-thinking. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Lauren Marcus spoke about being part of Be More Chill's entire circle journey, pulling off a quick recovery on stage while performing in Company with the late Stephen Sondheim in attendance and her latest single: "Skinny & Blonde."
To continue our discussion on the juicy topic of "belt," Alexa is joined by voice teacher and trainer of musical theatre and CCM, Amanda Flynn. Amanda has performed in shows like "Wicked" and "Mamma Mia" and has held the position of Production Vocal Coach for "The Lightning Thief" and "Be More Chill" on Broadway. She is the author of "So You Want to Sing Musical Theatre," the updated and expanded edition, and is here to chat about mastering belt in musical theatre. KEY TAKEAWAYS When discussing belting, it's essential to remember that it doesn't originate from Western classical singing. It's a form of sound production found worldwide, particularly in indigenous music traditions. Belting gained popularity in popular music through black female blues artists who incorporated this technique to intensify the emotional impact of their voices. When we apply Western classical principles to belting, many aspects don't align, leading to confusion among singers who realise that what they've been trained on doesn't quite fit this distinct vocal style. Mastering belt with laryngeal and acoustic registration involves controlling vocal folds, optimising resonance, and blending chest and head voice for a powerful and emotionally charged performance. Remember, if it sounds like a belt and works for a song then it's good. If you're getting the sound you want, don't overthink it. BEST MOMENTS ‘Belt is the most common and popular musical expression we have' ‘Belting is complex, it's not simple and straightforward' ‘They said you were belting out a sound because it's this big pop of a sound, almost like a punch' ‘One of the top questions I'm asked is what is belting, but we never ask a classical singer what classical is' EPISODE RESOURCES amandaflynnvoice.com Instagram & Tik Tok: @amandaflynnie Sign up for one of Amanda's classes, here: https://amanda-s-school-a64e.thinkific.com/ Get your copy of Amanda's book on Amazon Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Ma Rainey; Ida Cox; Bessie Smith; Ethel Merman; Musical Theatre shows mentioned: Wicked; Oklahoma! Infected by her mom's love for Broadway shows, Ilana was introduced to the world of theatre at an early age. After getting a haircut by one of the most handsome people she's ever seen when she was 18 years old, she ended up at his acting studio in New York and walked into a room of people performing a private moment exercise, which changed everything in her life from that moment on, including her college major. Chance after chance, and with the luck of being surrounded by other talented people, Ilana highlights the importance of having an artistic community where you can "fail beautifully over and over again." Apart from acting, Ilana also entered the podcast universe in 2016. According to her supportive friends, there's something about her that makes it easy for people to open up about all sorts of things. Today, she hosts a couple of podcast shows, which to her have become a great avenue and a safe space for people to share stories, and complex issues. This, and her love for creating art with others, tie in neatly with what motivates her in life: connecting. Ilana Levine is an actress best known for her role as Lucy Van Pelt in the Broadway revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown". She also starred on Broadway's “Jake's Women”, "Wrong Mountain" and "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" and performed at the Tony Awards. Ilana also appeared in many television shows and movies, including the infamous Seinfeld episode, "The Contest", "Law & Order", "Tanner '88", "Damages", "Tanner and Tanner", "Failure to Launch", "Friends with Kids", "The Nanny Diaries", and "Confessions of a Shopaholic" among others. In 2016, she started hosting the podcast show, “Little Known Facts with Ilana Levine”. Today, she also hosts the podcast shows, “And the Award Goes To... Talia Suskauer is currently playing Elphaba in "Wicked" on Broadway, following the success of the Munchkinland National Tour of the same show where she played the same role. From being a pasta lover to being a dog lover, Talia gets super personal as she shares how she got into theatre, which includes singing recordings in the car with her mom and sister. Talia looks back on the things that inspired her to pursue acting, the lessons she took throughout her childhood and teenage years, and how the support she got from her parents and mentors has molded her and helped her find her identity as an artist and performer. She recalls her first audition for "Be More Chill" just a week before graduating and her Broadway debut which she considers as unexpected and wild. During their closing week, Talia auditioned for "Wicked" as an Elphaba replacement and eventually got the role. And with live theatre shutting down for almost two years due to the pandemic, Talia opens up about how it affected her mental health, not being able to turn to theatre as a means of escape, and what helped her get out of her rut, including exercising. She was a part of the reopening cast for "Wicked" which was the first Broadway-caliber show to reopen in the country. She talks about being on tour and being on Broadway, why she loved touring, her passion for her job, and why you shouldn't let anyone try to put you in a box because your uniqueness is what makes you special. Talia Suskauer is a New York-based actor and singer who made her Broadway debut in "Be More Chill" and recently finished a long run in the Munchkinland National Tour of Wicked as Elphaba. She attended Penn State, where she received her BFA in Musical Theater. Her other stage credits include "Shrek", "Little Women", and "The Secret Garden". As noted in the previous episode, auditions are the backbone of this industry. It is the fundamental job of every actor to do as many jobs as we can and do each one to the best of our ability. But there is an important gatekeeper when it comes to submitting our self tapes or actually getting in the audition room, and that is the casting Director. You've heard from Actors and their experiences in front of the audition table. Well, now it's time to hear from the other side of that proverbial table and what goes in to casting, and the vital role they play in the production for the stage or screen. Daryl Eisenberg, along with fellow casting director Ally Beans, works to create a comfortable space for actors, so they can take risks and really show their full potential as artists. You'll hear Daryl's thoughts on how actors can make their mark in the audition room or on a self-tape, and then you'll get an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how she uses her position and expertise to make the audition process enjoyable and inclusive for artists on both sides of the table. Audition Stories of Diversity and Inclusion Covid certainly has changed the way we now audition, with self-tapes and Zoom auditions becoming the norm. But the summer of 2020 also changed the way we think about who is coming to the auditions and what that creative team looks like. In this week's bonus episode, Daryl shares a few of her own experiences as she advocates for more diversity on both sides of the table. You'll also hear how she works with fellow casting director Ally Beans, who is both partner and collaborator in the casting process. We had the pleasure of interviewing Charlie Rosen over Zoom video.Charlie Rosen, an experienced Grammy Award and Tony Award-winning composer, multi-instrumentalist, orchestrator, and music director. Most recently, Charlie received a Tony Award nomination for his orchestrating work on the Broadway musical A Strange Loop. A Strange Loop garnered 11 Tony nominations and 2 Tony award wins, making it the most-nominated show on Broadway this year. The momentous musical follows a Black and queer young artist at war with a host of demons — not least of which, the punishing thoughts in his own head — in an attempt to capture and understand his own strange loop.Charlie got involved with A Strange Loop after working as the Music Supervisor and Orchestrator for Be More Chill. He has the ability to act as a chameleon with music and fit into any situation he is brought into and once he started working on A Strange Loop, he collaborated with the show's composer, Michael Jackson heavily. Charlie can be analytical about sound because he has been interested in so many different styles and genres of music since childhood. He stepped into the role as orchestrator with a group of six musicians already selected. With such a small group of musicians, Charlie pushed for the orchestration to be clear and flow well, while also letting the musicians use some of their own voice so each show could provide a unique experience to the audience. He aimed to deepen the impact of the musical journey of the show through fully realized choices of genre, tone, color, and instrumentation.Charlie is currently working on orchestrating the upcoming Broadway musical Some Like it Hot. Other projects he's worked on range from a number of Broadway hits, including Prince of Broadway and American Psycho. We want to hear from you!
