Daphne Ashbrook had a very memorable appearance on the Star Trek DS9 episode, "Melora," playing the titular character in an episode that examined physical disabilities through a 90's sci-fi lens. Today, the episode is still discussed and debated, and this ensign's actress is ready to explain her side of the story, as well as tales from other productions ranging from modern films, period pieces, and a few things timey-wimey.Daphne tells us about wearing the Elaysian makeup and body prosthetics, navigating the tricky sets in an electric wheelchair, flying in the air on wires while kissing Alexander Siddig, and her take on the plot and intentions of "Melora," and how she views it through a modern perspective. Plus, her secret audition for a Star Trek movie, working with David Hasselhoff on "Knight Rider," the incredible stunts she did on an obscure made-for-TV movie, her trio of “Murder, She Wrote” appearances loaded with Star Trek alumni (as well as Florence Henderson), and behind-the-scenes stories from her starring role in the American “Doctor Who” movie with Paul McGann. Doctor Who first hit the airwaves in 1963 - sixty years ago! - but the TARDIS went dark in 1989 for an indefinite hiatus. In the mid-1990s, plans started brew to import the iconic British sci-fi series across the pond to America. The BBC partnered with the Fox network to produce a TV movie, which, if it performed well, could serve as the backdoor pilot for a revived series. English actor Paul McGann took over the TARDIS console as the Eighth Doctor after Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor was *checks notes* brutally gunned down by a machine-gun wielding street gang on prime-time television. Co-starring American actress Daphne Ashbrook as the doctor who tries to save him (see what I did there?) with Eric Roberts hot on their heels as The Master. Unfortunately, the special presentation was not a success, and the good Doctor remained in exile until regenerating in 2005 as Christopher Eccleston. But this is Chronovember, so we're whipping out our sonic screwdrivers and partying like it's 1999!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. VIEWERS of Doctor Who in the 21st century have become accustomed to watching how the show is made behind the scenes, through DVD and bluray extras, and Doctor Who Confidential. However, back in 1996, these things were unheard of, with the only additional content coming in the form of an official electronic press kit, with interviews with Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Daphne Ashbrook, plus the likes of Philip Segal. But Bill Baggs was ahead of his time, and sent a small guerilla team to Canada, accompanying Sylvester McCoy, to record a video diary of his final days of the Doctor, before handing over the TARDIS key to Paul McGann. This is the story of how Bidding Adieu came to be. You can order it HERE directly from producers BBV.

DOCTOR Who TV Movie screenwriter Matthew Jacobs has a new Time Lord-related project on the way - and he's spoken to Pieces of Eighth all about it. Matthew and his friend, documentary filmmaker Vanessa Yuille, follows him in Doctor Who Am I, as he is reluctantly pulled back into the fandom that universally panned his writing and narrative twists in 1996. In a film that is funny and moving, the American ‘Whoniverse' is explored during the biggest conventions dedicated to the cult of the Doctor. Jacobs's journey is often hilarious and emotionally perilous, but it also sparks a provocative and touching showdown between American Doctor Who fans and the writer himself. Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Eric Roberts, and many others, offer Jacobs words of wisdom and help him realize just how personal and ambivalently entangled the show has been in his life. Matthew unexpectedly finds himself a kindred part of this close-knit, yet vast, family of fans. Yuille's directorial debut documentary addresses the desire to belong to a community, and how people can become nourished and enriched by the experience.

Patricia Tallman, Actress & Stunt Performer on Star Trek TNG, DS9 & VOY Patricia Tallman has done it all in her career as an actress and a stunt performer, but all of her accolades came with a hefty price. In this episode of "Trek Untold," we have a candid conversation with the spectacular Patricia Tallman, who performed stunts on TNG, DS9, Voyager, and the "Generations" film. She's also served as a double for Gates McFadden, Nana Visitor, Gwynyth Walsh, Daphne Ashbrook, and many others. She has also been a Starfleet officer, a Romulan, a Bajoran, a Klingon, and even her own new race in the TNG episode "Starship Mine." Through all of her successes and accomplishments, Patricia struggled with being an actress in Hollywood that greatly affected her mental and physical health. Years later, she came to terms with everything she had been through and ultimately discovered her true passion. Patricia started in a small town playing Star Trek with her barbie dolls, which led her into the art of storytelling and the different ways she could express her feelings. We discussed her education in Carnegie Mellon, working with Tom Savini and George A. Romero through her career, memories of Tony Todd and the pranks she played on him during "Night of The Living Dead," learning to perform stunts, and her first role as a stunt performer in "Road House" under instruction from Rowdy Harrington and Charlie Picerni (and the injury she had that made her first stunt even more difficult), doubling for Molly Ringwald in "The Stand" and that explosive stunt that went deadly wrong, and working with Steven Spielberg as Laura Dern's double in "Jurassic Park."  From there, we discuss her Star Trek work, including fights with Nana Visitor, taking falls for Gates McFadden on generations, her first Trek stunt gig, Patricia's full role on "Starship Mine," a fight scene with Tim Russ on "Invasive Procedures" that busted her wide open and left her with a crimson mask, doubling for Melinda Culea in The Outcast," a repetitive stunt for Michelle Forbes that left Patricia badly bruised, and a whole lot more! NEW TO WHO and THE TV MOVIE“We’re back - and it’s about time!”Late July, 2019: the brink of a new episode of New To Who. An anachronistic Australian podcast materialises in San Francisco (or is that Vancouver?) amid a hail of laughter which finds its intentional targets - three strange men who walk out of the pod.But Col, Dan, and Steven are not the only podcasters in Vancouver. Doctor Who royalty, Jeremy Radick - who appears as Gareth in the 1996 TV Movie - is there as well, joining New To Who for a very special episode.Seven years after disappearing from television screens everywhere, Doctor Who came back - but for one night only. The script for The TV Movie (also unofficially known as “The Enemy Within”) was written by Matthew Jacobs - whose father appeared in the William Hartnell story, The Gunfighters - while Philip Segal was finally able to bring his vision for Doctor Who to a US mainstream audience for the first time in his role as Executive Producer of this American co-production with Fox. Geoffrey Sax, another Englishman in Hollywood, directs this big budget movie intended as a pilot for a Doctor Who series on network television.Taking the mantle of the Doctor, this time in his eighth incarnation, was the dreamy Paul McGann. Daphne Ashbrook played his companion-in-waiting, Dr Grace Holloway, alongside Jee Yee Tso as Chang Lee, who falls under the spell of the Master - this time played fabulously by Eric Roberts. You can listen to and see the film clip for The Safety Dance by Canadian new wave outfit Men Without Hats here.Theme by Our Colin (2019). As The Year With No Doctor Who drags on, new cracks in spacetime emerge, amongst them a back-and-forth war between the BBC and its enemies in government and without, and the surprising news that Chris Chibnall might adopt the (predominantly) American model of a writer's room for his tenure as showrunner for Doctor Who. Intriguing! And while thinking about the future, why not reflect on the past? Specifically, ponder upon the legacy of the twentieth anniversary of the TV Movie, with a panel recorded at LI Who featuring Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, Matthew Jacobs, and Gary Russell! And as if that isn't enough, we have an interview with Yee Jee Tso about "Time and Spaces," his photo book contrasting the Vancouver shooting locations of the movie in 1996 and today! Movie Meltdown - Episode 251  As we reach the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, we're going to be trying a little experiment with our movie o' the week. So pretty much none of our gang has paid much attention to Doctor Who over the years. So what happens if we watch the one-off movie they did in '96 trying to reboot the series? Will we as new viewers be won over? Will it even make sense to non-fans? That's what we'll find out in this episode as we join forces with the guys from "Tower of Technobabble" and discuss the 1996 movie "Doctor Who" starring Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook and Eric Roberts.  And as we play with our toy Tardis, we also mention...  the wilderness years, The Mysterians, The Eye, trying to please everybody, TV serials, love at second sight, BBC, coming with your own nickname, Tom Baker, British cheese and American cheese, The Avengers, K.I.T.T's seats go all the way back, get your geek on, Star Trek, loud costumes, coming out of the Doctor Who closet, an 8-year old with the biggest gun, Spock, Peter Cushing, Phantom Menace, working at Pottery Barn, Freaks and Geeks, my knees were blue, the most Doctor Who cleavage, because we didn't have cable... there was nothing else to watch, cravats are cool, being half-human, inside space baseball, George Lazenby, Planet of Fire... google image it, Supernatural, giving your brother hell,  panto, Stingray, feelin' Canada, double reboot, Quatermass, Universal monsters, pretty girls wearing mini-skirts, solving problems with fists, Thunderbirds, not entirely displeasurable, British fan culture, having a companion, British humor, Firefly, Space Loews, Star Trek: The Next Generation, chicken clucking, wearing a wig, allergic to the make-up, a ninja turtles vibe, Rose's perspective and my secret pain.  Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 1996 movie "Doctor Who". Plus Ben also tries to explain the whole Who mythology to a bunch of clueless movie fans.  "The people that remade the show for 2005, they looked at the '96 movie... and almost step-by-step they did the opposite of what they did. It kind of became a lesson in how to not make a successful TV pilot."

Back in 1996, the Doctor Who TV Movie struck TV screens on both sides of the Atlantic. At home it was a hit; in the USA, it was ignored. Now, 15 years later, we ask: has the Paul McGann-starring TV Movie dated badly? This week's podcast features Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian A Terranova discussing this in depth, while also taking a look at original design for Nephew in Neil Gaiman's The Doctor's Wife, and just what Danny Cohen thought he was playing at with his recent discussion about Doctor Who at the Church and Media conference. Here are a few quotes. On the matter of the Doctor Who TV Movie: "It did feel as though there were bits of The X Files in there but that the script and the tone of the show hadn't actually caught up with where The X Files was at that time." There is plenty to say on this, despite the episode being so old, and the era it represented failing to materialise. Christian and Brian are both massive fans of Paul McGann's performance in the Doctor Who TV Movie, making this a particularly interesting chat for them. On the original design for Nephew (http://www.kasterborous.com/2011/06/the-original-nephew/) : "The Nephew design is pretty stunning... they were having their lives augmented by House... it's understandable that the Ood might not have that, and I think that design would have much more suited the story." The recent statements by BBC One Controller Danny Cohen (http://www.kasterborous.com/2011/06/what-cohen-really-said/) concerning Doctor Who Series 7: "I think the whole...caboodle needs to be more responsive to the situation. Knocking it aside and saying "you've got to have faith" doesn't help the issue... I don't think using Twitter helps." Don't worry. We know that what you really want to do is listen to our thoughts on the 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie starring Paul McGann, Eric Roberts, Yee Jee Tso, Daphne Ashbrook, and Sylvester McCoy, Hit play above to get started.
