1 Samuel 18:1-5
Pastor Terry A. Smith - The story of Jonathan & David alluded to the great friendship that we have in God. Just as Jonathan made covenant with David, Jesus made covenant with us so we may be co-heirs to the throne.
As we continue through 1st Samuel, hear Pastor Michael preach out of 1 Sam. 8:1-5 on the friendship of David and Jonathan. How does Christ invite us into friendship? How can we better tend to the friendships in our lives?
David - Jonathan made a covenant because of their love for one another. Jonathan surrendered everything of value to himself to be in the will of God. Pastor Evans explains the definition of a covenant and what it means for the child of God.

Jonathan thought of the public welfare and wanted to avoid a civil war. The narcissistic Amnon threw her out and did not consider what would happen as a result of his actions.

ALC Recommends: Be invested in a Small Group ”As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him…” - 1 Samuel 18:1-5a ESV
The bond between Jonathan and David. Loyalty endures as a friend pursues God's heart, is rooted in bravery and humility, and is destroyed by jealousy. Visit southplains.org to request prayer and to stay up to date, or join our Facebook Group.
We should be willing to step out of our comfort zone and be present for the people in our lives. ~~~ 1 Samuel 23:16 “And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David…” Jonathan goes to David, even though David is in hiding, and even at great risk of Jonathan's own life. The encouragement of a fellow brother or sister who is pensive, or depressed, is worth a risk! Jonathan initiates. He doesn't wait for a letter or request from David. He is not waiting by the phone saying, “If he needs me, and asks, I will go to him.” NO! He takes initiative. He moves. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in a time of trouble… God is in the midst of her.” He is here, present with us. This is one of the distinguishing features of the true and Biblical God, that He is immanent and close to His people. He is not a far-off God who has no concern or care for his creation or people. The God-man entered His creation. Jesus left behind the glory and splendors in heaven, he humbled himself to come to us. He arose from his throne and came to us. And so too we should be able to say about God's people, that they are close and with us, a very present help in a time of trouble. Sometimes the providence and grace of God includes the presence of other believers in order to help us persevere and endure. Are you there, present for people? Are you willing to push things off of your busy schedule in order to be there for your faith family? What are you willing to risk in order to be there for your people? It can definitely push us out of our comfort zones, but look at what is at stake. You may be helping your brother or sister from being crushed under the weight of fear, the cloud of confusion. Your presence is comforting and useful. Just like a newborn baby needs the physical presence of her mother, so too does the believer need the presence and warmth of Christ that is often felt in Christian fellowship.

In this episode, Dr. T. Michael W. Halcomb takes a close look at a couple interesting claims, namely, that both Ruth & Naomi were gay and so, too, were David and Jonathan. In particular, he looks at an article recently published in a local magazine that was written by a Religion Professor. Along the way, he discusses the professor's claims about the Genesis account, too. Ever heard these arguments? Ever wondered how to deal with them? We're back in the Book of Samuel, starting in chapter 18, where giant-killer David meets Israel's other war hero, Prince Jonathan. To quote Taylor Swift, sparks fly. Platonic sparks, your Sunday school teacher assures you. There's a case these two were just extremely affectionate political allies. That case has been made, and we're not very interested in it. Interpret this story however you want. We're completely convinced this was the Bible's first great romance. Thanks. We're also joined by popular YouTuber, podcaster, and theologian Mason Mennenga to discuss how this story is just one of many examples that show scripture reflects how we view it. Support this show, if you like, by joining our Patreon, where we post monthly episodes on related stuff (CCM cringe/nostalgia, explaining Christian-ese language, ranking '70s Rapture movies, what the Bible *actually* says about abortion, etc.). David killed Goliath and instantly became a national hero. King Saul was angry and envious which led him to relentlessly pursue David in order to take his life. But God used David's friendship with Jonathan to strengthen his faith in God through one of the darkest and most challenging periods of his life. Let's look together at the characteristics of their friendship.
Bible Thumper Thursday…; overcome the false reality, the not you. Bible thumpers stuck in the intellect instead of knowing for real, for themselves. You must be willing to go against the crowd, be still within and let the ego die. David from Ohio says he can't get close to his step-son because the mother is too protective. They discuss how he got in the situation he is in in the first place. — Back to David… Jonathan from Florida says that he has trouble forgiving mother because she won't change.
When I learned that Jubilee Lipsey started her Biblical fiction series by writing a Bible study of David & Jonathan, I knew this would be an author right up my alley! Listen in to learn why she chose to debut with that particular story, what she learned from it, and what to expect from her next! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What about 2020 Prompted Authors to Write about This Great Friendship? Jubilee Lipsey is the second (although, I think it's actually the third) author that I've spoken to who found themselves writing about David and Jonathan during 2020. Lockdown hit and of all the Bible stories that could be fictionalized, they chose this classic friendship. The first you can read about HERE. But as I mentioned already, the most fascinating bit of this story is not that she chose to spend lockdown writing her first novel. She went on to rapid-release the next two in the series ensuring that the entire series was available quickly. Not only that, but she's done this very well. The books are available in paperback, on kindle, and in hardback (I got my hardback at a GREAT price, so you should definitely check that out). Why did the Lord press David and Jonathan onto the hearts of His people? What can we learn from that? I don't know, but I definitely want to read this book (it's beckoning from my shelf!) to find out. My Brother the King by Jubilee Lipsey Still reeling from his father's break with the God of Israel, Prince Jonathan is in line to inherit a throne that has already been stripped from his family. The young shepherd David is the man after God's own heart, chosen to take Jonathan's place. Carrying a secret anointing that won't stay hidden, David yearns to fight alongside his childhood hero rather than against him, but his calling threatens both their lives at every turn. Instead of fighting to the death over a crown that can't belong to both of them, the two young warriors forsake rivalry and pledge themselves to a friendship forged in the passionate pursuit of the God who called them—both. Walk alongside two Biblical heroes as they embrace the will of God through a selfless covenant that would withstand the brutal tests of family jealousy and war—a friendship that would change history. You can learn more about Jubilee on her WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? You can find Because Fiction Podcast at: Apple Castbox Google Play Libsyn RSS Spotify Stitcher Amazon and more!
