Back to school week kicks off with a look at one of the premier 2024s in New Jersey. Bishop Eustace's Landon Mack used the summer to further his claim as one of the best two-way players you'll see, as he put up gaudy numbers at the plate AND on the bump in a number of key Perfect Game events. He truly emerged as a pitcher and became a reliable ace in both the spring and summer and last April made a verbal commitment to emerging power Rutgers and we know Coach Owens just loves Mack's competitive spirit. Landon also discusses his diagnosis at age 3 with Type 1 diabetes and tells us about the impact a former Eustace star - Minnesota Twins lefty Devin Smeltzer - had in his development. Check out Landon's story as we go Back to School on JBS!

The Twins head to the desert and come up with just one win in a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a disappointing outcome in the eyes of David and Dan. They look back at a homer-heavy series at which Dan was in attendance for all three games. Dan offers his assessment of the gameday experience at Chase Field in Phoenix, and David asks the elephant-in-the-room question about why exactly there is a line across the centerfield wall. They dissect Rocco Baldelli's use of the team's pitchers and wonder whether Devin Smeltzer is going to turn it around next series after a rough Game 1 in Arizona. They also consider the Twins' roster options whenever Jorge Polanco comes back, and David asks whether the Twins should get the gang back together, starting with the recently released Sergio Romo. Without top starters Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray -- and then without Carlos Correa -- the Twins manage just one victory against the Detroit Tigers in their rare five-game regular season to start the week. The Twins maintain their spot atop the AL Central, but David worries that this was an opportunity wasted with three much more difficult opponents coming up over the next three series. Dan and David lament the wasted starts from Chris Archer and Devin Smeltzer, as the Twins are shut out twice in this series and fail to keep leads in two other games. Dan wonders whether this team can get healthy and eventually be capable of winning a series, whereas David is just focused on the Twins getting through June with a decent record. The Minnesota Twins split a doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers Tuesday. Devin Smeltzer was outstanding in game one, Cole Sands struggled early in game two, and the Twins offense showed up for only one of the affairs. Max Kepler had a fantastic day at the plate, while Gary Sánchez belted another homer and Trevor Larnach continued to drive in runs. That didn't continue in game two, when the Twins were shutout and failed to hit the ball hard. They are 30-21. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Devin Smeltzer pitched well and the back end of the bullpen showed up admirably. Matt Wisler made a mistake on a slider to Ryan McBroom that put the Royals up 3-2 for good. The Royals' bullpen was unbelievably dominant. The Twins' bats went cold. They'll look to rebound Saturday against Danny Duffy as Jake Odorizzi makes his season debut. LHP Devin Smeltzer came to the Twins in a July 2018 trade from the Dodgers. He had gained notoriety because he met Chase Utley in Philadelphia as a childhood cancer patient. Then in Dodgers spring training a couple of years ago, he was brought into the clubhouse and the story was again told, this time with Utley in that clubhouse to meet him again. Smeltzer has been terrific as a starting pitcher in AA and AAA so far this season, but he continues to support people with childhood cancer. Recently, he started the Catch Cancer Looking campaign, selling t-shirts with proceeds going to Katie's Krusaders. A great story of an athlete giving back to kids that he had something in common with. Get to know Devin Smeltzer.
Minnesota Twins prospects Jimmy Kerrigan and Devin Smeltzer, of the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos, joined the Home Run On Wheels podcast to discuss their life journeys toward a professional baseball career. Kerrigan was undrafted out of college, where he had to transfer from Temple to VCU after the Owls folded their program, and then played semi-pro ball before being signed by an independent Frontier League team near St. Louis. He had his contract purchased by the Twins in 2017. Smeltzer was diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer days before his 10th birthday, but was in remission by age 12. He went on to be a fifth-round pick of the Dodgers, but was traded to the Twins last year. The southpaw regularly visits children’s hospitals to share his story, but more to just be someone kids going through what he dealt with can lean on and talk to while also having fun.
