Renowned National Geographic Photographer Dewitt Jones shares with us a life-changing habit, available to us all: celebrate what's right with the world. The perspectives he shares today can open up a radically improved landscape of possibilities for you and I. As a bonus, today's video episode contains some of his most inspiring images: stunning views of the night sky, time lapses of water rushing in on the shore beneath a gorgeous sky, beautifully-lit hot air balloons reflecting off the water below, and more. This is an episode you won't want to miss.
Back around 2007 or thereabouts, one of my customers asked me to be one of several keynote speakers at a big annual sales event they were holding. Thankfully, it worked with my schedule, because Dewitt Jones was also keynoting the event—and I got to hear him speak. I didn't know Dewitt, but it turned out that I knew his work. Boy, did I know his work. Dewitt photographed for National Geographic for 20 years. He shot some of my favorite stories, and as I listened to his presentation, I was captivated by his message: That the world is filled with possibility, and that we should go out of our way to celebrate what's right with the world, rather than wallow in what's wrong with it. Not long ago, I asked Dewitt if he would join me on the program, and he graciously accepted. We hopped on a Zoom call, I, in my office in snowy Vermont, Dewitt at his home on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. His windows were open, the birds were singing, and for about two hours, we just talked. This is our conversation. Dewitt's wisdom is a gift to us all. Please, really, really listen to what he has to say. And if you're looking for a speaker for an event, look no farther: this is your guy. Check him out at DewittJones.com.
In this 4th installment of ‘It's SME Again' podcast series, we chat with Dewitt Jones, world renowned Nat Geo photographer and motivational speaker about how travel can enhance or detract from performance, and how there is more than one right answer in travel, and life. We have previously spoken with road warriors from professional baseball to film and television production to an Olympics Water Polo team. One of the common threads we have discovered is how travel is a key ingredient to success in the sports, media, and entertainment industries. Joining live from GBTA Convention 2022 in San Diego, hosts Amy Thiessen and Greg Bell have an insightful conversation with Dewitt Jones on how to celebrate what's right in both life and travel. Dewitt Jones, in his twenty-year career with National Geographic, Dewitt Jones lived the vision of “celebrating what's right with the world” and embraced an attitude that took him to new heights both in business and in life. He found that the creative tools he employed as a photographer had even deeper application when applied directly to his personal and professional growth. Discover the beauty of being open to possibilities and reframing problems into opportunities. Using his own extraordinary photographs as illustrations, Dewitt weaves a visual tapestry of emotion and content. One that allows you to touch your own passion: to balance your head with your heart: and to come away inspired with your own creative potential. GBTA's Sports, Media & Entertainment committee (SME) currently has 20 committee members from high-level positions within the travel community. Our buyers represent many of the leading sports, media and companies in the world, from professional sports teams and leagues, players associations, movie studios, film production companies, music labels, and so on. Jordan Herrod sits down with former Wildcat football head coach Dewitt Jones and Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations Lance Fleming to discuss some of the biggest moments in the program's storied history.
"Look for what is right and create more of that." This is just such a powerful phrase. (one shared with me many times by my dear friend and colleague, Melissa) "Look for what is right and create more of that." So often we get wrapped into worries, fears, doubts, and insecurities around what is not working or what is not 'going right' that we begin to see this as a 'safe' place. Expressing and sharing our worries, doubts, and fears becomes the 'safe' place in conversation, the 'safe' place in the ways we see ourselves, and it is the 'safe' place we cling to as we stand on the precipice of a leap. Now there is definitely a time to express these facets of our experience, and it is such a gift to sink into sacred conversation with a friend, family member, or loved one who can hold space as voice is brought to what we have been struggling with. But when we begin to create more awareness around this 'safe' place while also welcoming crystal clear awareness around what is already right and amazing in our lives, magic happens. In my final year as an occupational therapist, we kicked off the year with a talk by Dewitt Jones where he extended the invitation to 'celebrate what's right with the world.' This talk shaped my life and my work in so many ways and even still there are times when I find myself descending into the trenches of old pain and getting stuck in what is wrong. This is part of being human . . . the opportunity to know and experience a full spectrum of emotions. What a cool thing?! The thing that always seems to pull me out is shifting my gaze, just a bit, so that it lands upon something that is already right. For today, I want to invite you to do this as well. There is always something right if we just simply shift our lens of perspective and see the moment, the situation, or the experience just a little bit differently. As we recognize what is right, we step through a sacred passage into what is possible. We heal. We grow. We change. We transform. We open our hearts to what is next . . . and what is next is just waiting to be born. Yes, as we find what is right, we begin to create more of that. P.S. Based on a superb Ted Talk by Dewitt Jones, a former photographer for the National Geographic, this episode explores how "celebrating the good" can change our perspective and outlook on life. Mandy encourages all of us to find as many right answers as we can by "changing our lens" or point of view.

On today’s Thought Talk, I speak with my good friend Dewitt Jones about the power of virtual presentations. Jones is an international Keynote speaker, former National Geographic photographer, and the founder of Celebrate What’s Right With the World. Dewitt went from speaking at dozens of in-person events with thousands of attendees pre-COVID to pivoting to virtual keynotes. He is currently gearing up for his first 130,000 person talk. We will discuss the keys to a great virtual presentation, what type of backgrounds work (and don’t), how to address the camera in a way that feels like you are speaking to an audience, and how best to keep your audience’s attention. Tips for a better virtual presentation: Mind your space — there is such a thing as too far and too close on the camera. Find your ideal space for connection. The camera picks up on the smallest facial expressions so it’s critical to train and practice your presentation. Keep your talking portion below 30 minutes and add visual support to remain engaging — images get to the heart and gut of the audience in a way that words can’t. There is more than one right answer — look for solutions, and remember that the key to creativity is embracing change. DeHaan
