The 1982 murder of 15-year-old Linda Strait was a cold case for more than 20 years. Advancements in DNA technology finally led Spokane Police to the teen's killer - Arbie Williams. Williams was already serving time for a separate case when detectives finally linked him to Linda's murder. That case involved the kidnapping of two eight-year-old little girls outside of their Spokane Valley elementary school. An arrest and sentencing for Linda's case gave her loved ones a level of peace that they say is continually disrupted as he comes up for parole. To watch our full Cold Case series, be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel @NonStopLocalNews and ring the bell to be notified of every new episode, plus daily news updates.

Washington, like the entire country, has been hit hard by fentanyl. in 2025, King County has recorded more than 650 overdose deaths involving the synthetic opioid, which can be 50 times stronger than heroin. 650 is a devastating number but it’s actually down from a peak in 2023, when more than 1,000 people died from fentanyl-related overdoses in the county. The drop mirrors a downward trend that we’ve seen across the entire country… But the crisis is still overwhelming many communities. A biotech company called ARMR Sciences is hoping to solve at least one piece of this very complicated puzzle: Instead of reversing these overdoses, they want to stop them from happening in the first place... through a fentanyl vaccine. This segment first aired in December of 2025. Also - We wanted to share a response we got from a listener about our update on Kratom. In case you missed it, Kratom is a plant from Southeast Asia that can have psychoactive effects. You’ve probably seen the signs for it - they’re plastered on just about every smoke shop in the city. We previously spoke with UW Medicine researcher Caleb Banta Green about what we know about kratom. And we replayed a short bit of that conversation last week in an update…. Because Spokane and Spokane Valley recently banned the sale of the substance. We also asked you to give us your thoughts on Kratom and whether it should be a banned substance. Erik from Bothell responded with a really interesting personal take on the substance, and its effects. GUESTS: Dr. Colin Haile, a research associate professor at the University of Houston and he’s also one of the co-founders of ARMR Sciences. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments in two cases challenging state bans on trans athletes competing in girls' and women's sports.Twenty-seven states have bans on trans girls and women competing in school sports consistent with their gender identity. But Washington passed a law in 2007 that protects trans athletes' participation in school sports. It was the first state to do so. For more than a decade, that law received very little attention. But in recent years, questions about fairness, the athletic advantages conferred by testosterone, and the sanctity of women’s sports have become fiery political issues. And for the first time, a few trans athletes have won competitions, including Verónica Garcia, a runner from Spokane Valley. In May, she repeated as the state 2A high school girls champion in the 400 meters. “We're often put in positions that make us uncomfortable with the inner struggle of how to keep our job and have our program recognized enough to get support versus how to carry out our true mission with students. If I'm trying to continue to fall in love with the choral art, I think the way to do that is looking for literature that will balance the soul-searching and academic needs of the students and the entertaining needs of the audiences. Looking for literature for all of those reasons often reignites my own curiosity and interest.”Dr. Kristina Ploeger-Hekmatpanah is a Full Professor of Music serving as Director of Choral Activities and Undergraduate Music Education at Eastern Washington University. She has earned degrees from Edmonds Community College, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, and the University of Kentucky. She was the Artistic Director of the Spokane Area Youth Choirs, and the Director of Spokane Symphony's Chorale & Chamber Choir. Previously in Spokane, Kristina taught Choral Methods at Gonzaga University, observed student teachers for Whitworth College, and taught Middle School Choir at St. George's School and High School Choir at West Valley High School in the Spokane Valley. Before moving to the Spokane area, she taught at Everett HS, Ephrata HS, and AC Davis HS. Kristina has served on the WA ACDA Board as an R&S chair in world music, children's chorus, university, and jazz, and is the current President-Elect of WA ACDA. She has presented numerous times for state and all-northwest MENC/WMEA conventions and twelve WA-ACDA Summer Institutes. Directing Honor Groups and All-State Choirs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Kentucky, from Elementary through High School levels; as well as presenting at festivals and conferences in WA, MA, OR, ID, FL, and KY has given her the opportunity to work with a wonderful array of choristers and directors. (The Center Square) – Around 20 officers short, Spokane Valley needs more funding to expand its police force, but the city might have shot itself in the foot with its immigration policy. Gov. Bob Ferguson signed House Bill 2015 on Monday, delivering on a day-one promise to put $100 million behind police recruiting during his first year in office. The law creates a .01% local sales tax that voters can approve in addition to two other existing public safety taxes. This is CrossPoliticNews’ Weekly Roundup sponsored by "Christian Business Leaders Network." If you want to find out more about this network and its efforts to connect Christian business leaders so that they can more effectively help their businesses and shape culture, visit businessmakers.network. Again, that’s businessmakers.network. As our journalist Kevin Amundson reported, Pope Francis just died last Monday at age 88 after being Pope for twelve years. During this time, Pope Francis took an unbiblical, unchristian stance on many of the culture of the cultural issues that have gained traction around the world in the past couple decades, such as LGBTQ+ nonsense, speculative climate change, and immigration. It’s bad when a normal Christian takes a liberal view on these problems, but it’s even worse when the Pope does. However, like every ruler and person on earth, the Pope has passed away, and so the College of Cardinals has to select a new candidate. As our reporter Kevin Amundson wrote, these Cardinals and every other Christian must look back to Christ as head and remember he has authority over everything. He rules the nations, he rules the stars, he rules the President, and he rules the Pope. Christ had authority over Pope Francis, and he has authority over the next Pope, who will be the 267th Pope. Let’s pray that this next pope will better honor Christ’s authority and headship by taking a stronger, more biblical stance, against the liberalism rooted in our culture. (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/pope-francis-dies-at-88) On a different note, our reporter Justin Chartrey just wrote about the ongoing tax storm blowing through Washington State. And while already the tax weather is very temperamental, it looks like it could grow even worse with the newest two bills that have been proposed by Washington State’s Senate. These two bills are Senate Bils 5812 and 5786, and they will increase taxes for levies and properties. Also, as a side note, the one involved with property taxes is also connected to providing government funds for education. Yikes. Both of these bills, though, will triple the cap of the taxes from an annual growth of 1% to 3%. Our journalist Justin Chartrey showed the disastrous effects of Senate Bill 5812 by showing how it will increase property taxes: "An 1,800 square-foot home in Spokane Valley, Washington with a property size of roughly one-third of an acre has a valuation of about $350,000. The property taxes on that home in 2024 are just over $2,700. Let that sink in. A state like Tennessee meanwhile has a property tax of about $600 a year. Under the new proposed bill, combined with a 1% population growth for Spokane County; the tax increase for 2025 would push that amount to near, if not more than $3,000 a year." (https://www.crosspoliticnews.com/news/washington-wages-war-on-its-middle-class) Meanwhile, the second Senate bill will increase liquor license taxes by 50%, which will really hurt many small businesses. So many taxes. Even Bob Ferguson, the governor of Washington State, isn’t thrilled about these taxes. If you’re living in Washington, now is the time to act against these terrible bills. Time is running out before legislatures make their decisions. Finally, our journalist Bill Peacock wrote an article about the new school choice rulings in Texas. Although the state’s House of Representatives in Texas debated on the issue for 11 hours, those who voted for school choice eventually won, securing a bill that will give money to homeschoolers and private schools in a few years. The democrats and two republicans tried to stop this bill, but it passed 86-61. While it is good that Texas is giving people the choice to pick their school and is backing their education decisions, there’s still something odd here. If we are finally securing a school bill from the state, doesn’t that mean we are still receiving orders about education from the government? It looks like the state still makes the standards when it comes to education, something that we don’t want. Yes, we shall be grateful for any progress, but let’s not stop at these pro-choice laws. The government in Texas isn’t gripping education in Texas anymore, but it also hasn’t completely let go. We must continue to press the advantage while we have it and fight for a government-free education. An interview with music around the Spokane Valley Summer Theatre's "Big Band Christmas"
Susie Fieckert spent most of her life living in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., where she worked in corporate sales. After her kids went off to college and she experienced an unexpected divorce, she decided it was time to start a new chapter in her life. With some convincing from friends, Susie joined an online dating service and eventually met her husband, Rich. As they traveled to find their new home, they ended up in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho by happenstance. During the long winters, she wanted something to do and decided to pursue writing, a passion she had thought about for many years. After some convincing, she sat down with a pen and paper and started writing her first book, "Abby's Road". Drawing from her own life experiences, she realized that many women were going through similar situations. The book begins post-divorce, where the character Abby is trying to figure out her new direction in life, learning that life is meant to be lived and encouraging others to have the courage to take chances. A great read, you can find the book on Amazon or at the Bonners Ferry Book Store. She will also be doing a book signing at the Barnes and Noble book store in the Spokane Valley on October 27 from 1-4pm.

Throughout his career, Harry has served as a teacher, coach, counselor, principal, and superintendent, primarily in the Spokane Valley, Washington area. Beyond Washington, Harry's leadership extended to school districts in northwest Montana and North Idaho, where he championed school reform initiatives for a combined nine years. Known for his focus on at-risk and special needs students, Harry introduced innovative programs like the "School within a School" model and the Bridge Academy dropout retrieval high schools in both states. His commitment to education earned him recognition as a finalist for Superintendent of the Year in Washington (1998) and Idaho (2007). In addition to his educational career, Harry spent 20 years as a major league baseball scout for the Philadelphia Phillies, a role that reflects his love of sports and mentorship. Now residing in Twin Lakes Village, North Idaho, with his wife Sandy, Harry enjoys spending time with their children and grandchildren, all of whom live nearby in the Spokane area.
Do you end up with a wooly ball of anxiety every time you have to go to the vet? I do. In fact, we've been having to go to a lot of appointments lately as arthritis has set in with the knee Bella had TPLO surgery on last year. Now … we adore our general practice vet here in Spokane Valley but if Latah Creek Animal Hospital was a little bit closer, I would be seriously considering a switch. Based right here in my town, Spokane, Washington, Latah Creek is a fear-free clinic. I've been following their Instagram account for a while and I just love the energy that comes out in their posts: informative, educational, kind … I reached out for a chance to interview the top dogs there and clinic owners Jessica Osborne and Dr. Megan Bauer couldn't wait to share the good word of fear-free veterinary practices. We talk about this innovative approach to reduce stress and anxiety for pets during vet visits and how Jessica and Dr. Megan create a calm environment for both stressed-out animal and stressed-out human guardian. What’s Trending: People in Seattle have had enough of crime. Mayor Bruce Harrell and other city leaders held a forum and citizens in the audience were hoping for more interaction with the audience rather than just hearing a speech from the officials. The ruling came out in the case of Fani Willis and her affair with her subordinate Nathan Wade. The result of this was not too bad for Willis but it does give more talking points for Donald Trump and his co-defendants in his Georgia election case. A 78-year-old blind woman who had requested her mail to be delivered to her door rather than the mailbox across the street. She got no response from USPS, but King 5 News stepped in to help. // Rideshare apps are leaving Minneapolis after the city has vetoed the Mayors decision of denying a higher wage for the drivers, similar to legislation in Seattle for food delivery drivers. // A Spokane Valley sex offender was arrested again but in Idaho after the man was spotted by a victim’s mother. By Mike Phelps in Spokane Valley, Washington 2023 - October 6, 2023 - We know that in time, Jesus Christ will return to this earth with might and power to humble the nations: mighty in strength and mind. But He will also come with compassion and healing for a broken people and world. He will return to be the "Fixer of the World". There is no question there is much brokenness and problems in society all around us. There is much to be fixed. For those of us who allow God to work in our lives, and endure to the end, we will be there to help fix the world. God has invited us to begin His training program, to lead us and teach us the tools that someday we'll be able to use, as we join Him in fixing the world's problems. Don't ever lose sight that you are being called right now today, to help fix the world.

By Steve Nutzman in Spokane Valley, Washington 2023 - September 30, 2023 - This message focuses on the the glorious rulership of Jesus Christ as King of kings as well as the importance of staying focused on our calling from God. Jesus Christ will lead all nations to peace and conversion. God's way of life will work for all of humanity: and the elect of God are now being called to be teaching priests in the Kingdom of God so we must "learn today--teach tomorrow." We cannot teach what we have not learned.
