Meet Christina Crawford, actress, author, and performer in theater, film, and television. Her first book, Mommie Dearest, was a New York Times Bestseller in 1978. She has always been an advocate for social justice, particularly for the rights of children and women who have been assaulted or abused. Her unwavering belief in justice, regardless of when the abuse occurred, is a powerful message of empowerment and hope. Ali and Callie had the privilege of meeting Christina to delve into her enlightening book, Daughters of the Inquisition: Medieval Madness: Origins and Aftermath. This literary masterpiece provides a comprehensive account of the events that have shaped modern womanhood in the Western world, offering a unique perspective on 'Herstory'. The book's primary focus is the evolution of women's spiritual communion, chronicling cultural, industrial, governmental, and gender dynamics throughout the centuries. It explores the impact of the Inquisition on women's lives, their struggles, and their resilience in the face of oppression. It also sheds light on the aftermath of the Inquisition and its lasting effects on the status of women in society. Since 1993, Christina has called the Inland Northwest her home, where she has embarked on diverse experiences. She has been a B&B owner, a regional TV show host at Channel 24 in Spokane, WA, a county commissioner, and the Entertainment Manager for the CDA Casino. “Own your life, own your journey, honor that journey, and understand that is the only reason you are graced with life.” You can find her books on Amazon.

Please welcome my guest today, dentist Josh Cochran, who didn't just build the largest general dental group in the Inland Northwest, he built a real estate empire while he was at it. After selling a stake in his thriving dental practice, he set his sights on commercial real estate, starting with medical retail development before getting involved in ground-up multifamily projects worth over $125 million. The Accidental Developer Josh has an interesting background in that he didn't just lease space for his dental offices, he built them and, in the process, he discovered he had a knack for development. What started as a necessity quickly became a passion, leading him to acquire land, structure deals, and transform raw dirt into ground up developments. Scaling Up to Multifamily Retail development had its challenges, but Josh knew where the market was heading. He pivoted to multifamily, securing land, entitling projects, and working with institutional capital partners to develop over 450 units across five projects. Along the way, he raised millions from investors, balancing capital allocation with active development. Raising Millions While Protecting Investors With a network of high-net-worth investors, many from his dental background, Josh built a capital-raising system. He is hyper-focused on due diligence, personally vetting deals, sponsors, and market fundamentals before committing capital. His slow and steady approach has helped him safeguard investors from the risky, overleveraged deals that have sunk others. Lessons from the Trenches Josh shares the hard-earned lessons from his transition, including: Why development takes longer than you think—but is worth the wait The biggest fundraising mistakes investors make (and how to avoid them) How he structures deals to align incentives and mitigate risk The power of relationships in CRE and why “going deep” is better than broad diversification. *** From running a successful dental practice to structuring nine-figure real estate deals, Josh's journey proves that the right mindset and strategic partnerships can open the door to CRE success. If you're looking to break into development, master capital raising, or scale a real estate business, this episode is full of real-world lessons and advice. *** Explore the world of real estate capital allocators—a fresh approach to financing that's reshaping the industry. In this series, I talk with allocators, investors, sponsors, and service providers to give you an inside look at this fast-growing space. High schoolers from the Inland Northwest celebrate their art submissions inspired by the prompt of "Black Joy" and discuss the significance of their pieces published in the Spokesman-Review with Black Lens Editor Natasha Hill at Gonzaga University.
In this special episode of Stories from the River, Manny Rodrigues, Presiden & COO of Broad River Retail, welcomes Charlie Malouf, CEO of Broad River Retail, and host of the podcast, into the studio. The discussion focuses on a significant new venture for Broad River Retail: the planned expansion into Spokane, Washington, and the Inland Northwest, scheduled for late 2025 or early 2026. Charlie explains that the decision to move into a 101,000 square foot former Macy's at NorthTown Mall in Spokane was driven by a chance conversation with an executive from Ashley Global Retail. The venture represents a strategic expansion aimed at broadening Broad River's traditional aperture relative to new markets and seizing new growth opportunities. The project is known as "Project Cascade" because it involves an attempt to expand and replicate Broad River's culture and operational methods far from its current geographical base, and the Cascade Mountains are nearby geographically. Charlie highlights the rationale behind choosing Spokane as a market, citing the opportunity to select prime real estate and the potential of the greater market area, which boasts a population approaching one million. The project will include a dual-store concept featuring a 7.0 Ashley Store with an Ashley Outlet and an expansive Sleep Shop on the 3rd floor. In fact, the Spokane store will be the first multi-level, multi-floor store that Broad River will open. Manny and Charlie emphasize the importance of executing this venture in the "Broad River Way," ensuring a blend of cultural values and operational excellence. This expansion provides growth opportunities for current Memory Makers, with several already expressing interest in contributing to the success of the Spokane store. Forests are more than just a collection of trees; they are dynamic ecosystems that depend on a variety of factors to thrive. One of the most crucial yet often overlooked components of these ecosystems is the soil. Far from being just a passive foundation, soil is an active, living system that plays a vital role in determining the health and productivity of forests. A recent study by emeritus Professor James Moore of the University of Idaho and his colleagues offers a deep dive into how the geological origins of soil influence its chemical properties, shedding light on the intricate relationships between soil, vegetation, and forest management in the Inland Northwest region of the United States.

Meet Jake Tucker, founder of Roav — a collection of urban and luxury retreat STRs located in the Pacific Northwest Jake began co-hosting Airbnbs while in college as a side-hustle. He had no experience in real estate or hospitality whatsoever, but after Googling "how to make a lot of money as a college kid", he stumbled upon the plethora of rental arbitrage content on YouTube and began to binge. When he graduated, all of his friends started getting real jobs and Jake felt pressured to do the same. But as he thought more and more about it, the idea of working for someone else seemed untenable to Jake… So, he decided to trust his gut and go all in on building his STR property management business. And now, just a few years later, Roav is one of the largest short-term rental hosting companies in the Inland Northwest. Tune in to hear Jake share how he got started with his first few properties, how he navigated COVID, his tips for acquiring new property owners as customers, the pros and cons of managing both traditional STRs AND unique stays, and much more. Book your stay with Roav Follow Roav on Instagram This episode is brought to you by our friends at OptimizeMyBnB I've been trying to find someone who I think understands the platform and marketing strategy better than me that I can refer you all to… And I'm happy to say that I think I've found him. Daniel has lived on Airbnb for more than 2,500 nights and has helped hundreds of hosts via his consulting, his program, and his thought leadership, increase their listing's rank on Airbnb. If you're newer to the STR space, or if your listings are starting to drop in rank, I want to encourage you all to do one of two things — if not BOTH — of the following: Buy Daniel's new book, “Profitable Properties: Airbnb Insider Secrets” — you can get it on Amazon for just $10 Join Daniel's 9-week program and he'll teach you everything you need to know about optimizing your STR for Airbnb, VRBO, Google Search, and beyond. On April 1st, 2023, the mighty winds of the Inland Northwest were picking up in Deer Park Washington thrashing the rural fields around like a natural dance from nature. On this beautifully stormy Saturday, I sat down with the singer-songwriter davis in his home to talk about his 60+ years of hearing, writing, and playing music throughout his life. From his first years of curiosity of the sounds around him to his present trials and tribulations as my father, a brother, a grandfather, and what lies next in his path of creativity. Join me on a ride through what began as an interview and naturally became somewhat of an amateur documentary with an unfiltered discussion of what it means to go all in to what you love. Be sure to also hang out till the end for a featured artist performance by davis joined by Mark Flanigan on keys. Today on the pod, we have the second part of our conversation with Daniel Walters. https://www.rangemedia.co/far-right-pride-couer-d-alene/ (Last week) we spent a lot of time breaking down the chronology of how the June 11 anti-Pride event was conceived and initially promoted locally, but how “local” in the case of North Idaho now includes an increasing number of far-right celebrities. This week we discuss how, just as the pot seemed likely to boil over, all sides took a step back — tweaking their plans to de-escalate — and how that might have been the difference between what actually happened and something deadlier. We also discuss the way these things get covered by the media: does the far-right get over-covered? Or do larger outlets only pay attention to the Inland Northwest when people like Matt Shea are involved? Read Daniel's story https://www.inlander.com/spokane/why-coeur-dalenes-pride-in-the-park-became-the-target-for-white-supremacist-groups-like-patriot-front/Content?oid=24009613 (here).
Today on the pod, The Inlander's Daniel Walters joins us to talk about the many groups, YouTube celebrities, and far-right hype people who brought the June 11 counter-demonstration against Coeur d'Alene's Pride in the Park near to a boiling point. This event led to 31 Patriot Front members getting arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to riot, including at least two men with ties to far-right pastor Matt Shea. There's A LOT to unpack here, so we're cutting the discussion up into two parts. We wanted to go through it methodically as an opportunity to document not just the people actively shaping politics in Kootenai County and the broader Inland Northwest, but the people who are promoting the region to hundreds of thousands of people nationwide. So buckle up for part one of a discussion of all the connections, alliances and squabbles of a region that has real importance for many different ideologies and groups across the spectrum: from conservative to libertarian to far-right. Read Daniel's story https://www.inlander.com/spokane/why-coeur-dalenes-pride-in-the-park-became-the-target-for-white-supremacist-groups-like-patriot-front/Content?oid=24009613 (here).
The Inland Northwest offers a unique glimpse into the future of the rest of the US in light of the expected overturn of Roe v. Wade & Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two landmark Supreme Court decisions that codified the federal right to an abortion. This is because there already aren't any abortion clinics in North Idaho, so many abortion-seekers as far away as western Montana need to go over the border to Eastern Washington clinics. For years, over 40% of patients seeking abortions at border clinics run by Planned Parenthood have been from out of state. Recently, that number has jumped to over 50%. We talked to friend of the pod & Inlander reporter Samantha Wohlfeil about her recent cover story, "https://www.inlander.com/spokane/washington-state-prepares-for-an-influx-of-patients-if-abortion-regulation-is-handed-over-to-the-states/Content?oid=23883242 (My Body, State's Choice?)" what additional work Washington abortion clinics are preparing for the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Follow Samantha on https://twitter.com/SAWohlfeil (Twitter).

Don has traveled and worked around the world which gives him a very unique insight. He is passionate about collaborative business models, vertical integration, and the future of community-rooted economics. Episode: 154 Dan Austin Join your host David Pere in this episode with guest Dan Austin as he shares about the boons and banes of wholesaling and why lead generation is not something you can ever turn your back to as a real estate investor. If you're gearing up to scale, for Dan, keeping track of your leads shouldn't ever be the thing that's compromised. If things get busy, hire help and maintain the quality of your lead generation. You'll never know the potential of the deals you'll lose with a lousy follow-up system. In this episode, Dan shares how he found fulfillment away from military service and engineering, his aggressive lead generation system, the only time you can slow down on your leads, the "addiction" common in the wholesaling space, and so much more. About Dan Austin: Dan Austin is a real estate investor from Spokane, Washington. He purchased his first rental property in 2016 with the goal everyone begins with, to have passive income, and fell in love with the process of improving the neighborhoods in his hometown. Since Dan began, he has been part of 100+ transactions either through flipping, renting, or assigning the contract. Dan doesn't come from a long line of real estate investors or entrepreneurs, for that matter. From the beginning of his real estate investment career, Dan has taken his personal growth and development into his own hands through podcasts, books, mentors, and lots of trial and error. Like any great thing, it started with a small spark, and it was up to him to blaze his own trail. Dan's goal is simple, he wants to be a driving force in the growth and restoration of the Inland Northwest. He's a Spokane native and is heavily invested in sustaining the vitality of his city. *Sponsor* Propstream https://www.frommilitarytomillionaire.com/propstream Outline of the episode: [02:30] Dan Austin – a funny story of how I picked the Army [04:23] Leaving the military and working a full-time job isn't fulfilling [08:20] David Pere – on getting a $14,000 discount on a wholesale [13:19] Some people don't know how to sell [16:52] The importance of a systemized, aggressive follow-up system [20:16] How different appreciation is down in Oxville [23:23] Neglecting your leads is like biting yourself in the ass [28:10] At the end of the day, you're always going to have shitty leads!
