Downtown Greenville is already considered one of the best Downtowns in the Southeast, and it's about to get a lot better, as there are many planned redevelopment projects (some already in the works!) for adding great new places to hangout, shop, and eat to some of Greenville's most neglected areas. So let's talk about them! In this episode we discuss: 1. The Greenville Gateway Project 2. The County Square redevelopment 3. The potential Poe Mill revitalization And we also get into the much maligned Inn at Altamont - a proposed resort hotel on Paris Mountain that is unlikely to ever see the light of day. This episode is best viewed on youtube, where you can see a bunch of renderings! Downtown Greenville, resilient kids, a spontaneous weekend getaway, and thoughts about housework.
This week we explored Greenville, South Carolina and were utterly impressed--gobsmacked, actually--by its charming vintage architecture mixed with modern, vibrant growth. We checked out the Liberty Bridge and Falls Park, and took an actual real estate tour specifically for those seeking to relocate to the evolving city formerly known as the Textile Capital of the World. It was there we discovered Greer - a town with great amenities just 20 mins from downtown Greenville. Between the GSP airport, brewery scene, James Beard nominated restaurants and real estate options, this town is now on the Skiptown map. Is it about to knock one of our other hometown choices out of the Top 5? Hit Play and find out! Pastor Mike gave us a tour of some of Greenville's up-and-coming communities. Believe it or not, a lot of our success boils down to the relationships we have with others. It's dependant on the type of environment we set up around ourselves. In the book Outliers Malcolm Gladwell observes: "When we see the tallest tree in a forest, we know that it has come from a good seed. But we must also take into account that it has been planted in good soil, and that its leaves have been able to reach the sunlight unimpeded, that it was not shadowed by some larger tree. The tree’s good seed is its “innate” ability, but the combination of its circumstances have allowed it to achieve great heights." Malcom Gladwell - Outliers The same can be said for when you consider personal growth. The people we surround ourselves with will have a large impact on the person we become. Even further, the quality of the relationships we have with those around us will impact the level of effectiveness those interactions have. On October 6th, 2019 The Modern Man Panel and I sat down to discuss the importance of relationships and how they can positively or negatively affect us. We all know that one person that sucks the room dry once they arrive. Or the life of the party who is sure to get the energy going. Just like these two extremes can shape a room, the mild middle can slowly and affectedly alter your life. Cultivate the relationship you want to have with other people. Invite people to see the real issues you face. Finally, use vulnerability as a tool of strength, not a shield of weakness. Take a listen as Tyler Harris, Charles Russ, Tim Pecoraro, Jonathan Parker and I unpack what it means for men to improve the relationships in their lives. During a rare moment of down time at the Carolina Music Museum, located in Downtown Greenville, I had a chance to bring my microphones, some music and another pianist to sit down and try out the historic keyboard instruments from their Facing South exhibit that will soon be wrapped up to make room for a brand new collection of such extent to warrant a name change. Lisa Kiser is the principal keyboardist of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. She will perform works by Mozart and Liszt on pianos from 1791 and 1863. We'll perform together a very unusual piece by Mozart written for two forte pianos. The museum happens to have two Broadwood pianos that were made within months of each other making this recording possible. Tom Strange, Curator and Founder of the museum tells us about a special "square" piano that had spent its entire life in South Carolina from 1834 until today. It barely escaped destruction by General Sherman's troops, but was saved because Eliza, the owner, played and sang
It was the perfect situation, I was headed toward Downtown Greenville and JUST passing a particular Pendleton Street gas station when a call rang in to the notary line regarding one signature and one stamp document. It seemed like pie in the sky. Would this be the quickest call and signing to go down in our notary record books? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/greenvillenotary/support
Cold Feet: Adventures in Matrimony by Wedding Officiant Sonita M. Leak January 29, 2018 Greenville, SC Cold feet. You would think that if any part of a couple had cold feet, they would express it in a major way before the ceremony, right? Well... in my experience as a Wedding Officiant here in South Carolina, I've come across a couple or two that experienced a few setbacks AFTER their ceremony with me. This is how one went down. So, a few years ago, I received an email from one half of a Beaufort County, South Carolina couple. Email correspondence went on back and forth with this male for quite some time. The story? He and his fiance were going to drive to Greenville on a specific date to get married, in short ceremony at the location of my choosing. So, when the time came for the couple to come to Greenville, I was met with odd questions regarding ceremony attendance, pricing and some other things. No biggie. I didn't think anything of it. On the day of the ceremony, the couple met me in Downtown Greenville, at Falls Park at the Reedy River. I'd even made the couple a keepsake, because they said they wanted one with the ceremony. Not a problem. Couple married, license paperwork signed, marriage license waiting in my hands to be mailed to the Beaufort County's Probate Court. So what happens? On Sunday night before the next day Monday's mail drop off of the couples' license, I receive a call from the Groom, yes, the same one I'd been communicating with for not just a few weeks, but for a FEW MONTHS. He says, “Don't turn the marriage license in!” Blank Stare. My reply, “You mean to tell me you don't want me to turn in the marriage license?” "That's correct, ma'am." May I ask why? Well, see, well, me and my girl wanted to invite more people to the ceremony and well, some of the family members got upset that we got married and they weren't there. “Oh, okay.” Even MORE confusion. So, a few days later, the Bride calls, “You turned our marriage license in, right?” MASS CONFUSION NOW. Wait, you mean to tell me that you guys wanted me to GO AHEAD and turn your paperwork in?” I eventually came to find out that the couple were involved in a disagreement between one another, it had absolutely NOTHING to do with family members not being able to attend. For those notaries public who decide to marry couples along with your commission duties, ensure that with each and every couple you join together in matrimony, TURN IN THE MARRIAGE LICENSE NO MATTER WHAT! After ceremony and filling of the paperwork, you are required to turn in the paperwork within 15 days thereafter. *The message at the end applies to State of South Carolina Notaries Public who marry couples. If you are hearing this and are in another state, your notarial and marriage rules may be different. This was today's Adventure in Matrimony.

Meredith works in oil, acrylic, soft pastels, and creates her beautiful wooden framed encased weavings. "Being one of the earlier (pieces of art)...I feel like that always takes longer because you don't know what you're doing, you're just exploring, which is awesome but those are some of the most beautiful sweet moments...that exploration of the unknown if you have not done it before, you have no idea what's going to happen or how it's going to turn out.
