Family Life's "Staycation Destinations" for Summer 2023 "Ska-Nonh" translates into English, roughly, as "peace and wellness" or "I am glad it is well with you." That Native American vocabulary -- and philosophy -- gave the name to the Ska-nonh Great Law of Peace Center along the shore of Onandaga Lake in central New York. The Skanonh Center is a living museum which celebrates the culture, history and contributions of multiple nations which found unity they share as the Haudenosaunee People. The Center is a project of the Onandaga Historical Association. Executive Director Lisa Moore offers us an overview of the Haudenosaunee stories, and she provides details of what visitors can experience. "The things we have a tendency to overlook take on a new level of importance. In Haudenosaunee tradition, being grateful and giving thanks is a regular practice in both everyday life and at special occasions. The Thanksgiving Address, or “The Words that Come Before All Else,” is delivered in Native Haudenosaunee languages at both the beginning and the end of social gatherings, celebrations, and council meetings; and it is recited each morning at the beginning of the school day." The Ska-nonh Center is open Wednesdays through Saturdays, and is located on the Onondaga Lake Parkway at Liverpool, northwest of Syracuse. Details and schedules are here. ========= This week's Side Trip Suggestion: The "Shoe House" in Yorklyn, PA. "There was an old woman, who lived in...." You probably already heard about that one, but elsewhere, an old businessman lived and worked in a retail-store shoe. "Colonel" Mahlon Haines became a millionaire selling shoes, but in the late 1940s at age 73, he decided to spend some of his money to build a 48-foot* shoe. He sold work boots for $1.98 there. The Shoe House became famous, as Haines offered the shoe as a free honeymoon suite (with a butler and maid) to any couple who got married in town. You can see the outside, but tours are no longer available -- unless you arrange to be a paying customer. The Shoe House (in south central Pennsylvania) has become an expensive vacation rental home. * (that's a measurement, not a count)

Integrating Franciscan spirituality with action, the Franciscan Peace Center carries out the advocacy work of the corporate public stands taken by the Clinton Franciscans. That work can take many forms: influencing lawmakers, prayer, educating individuals, mobilizing citizens to participate in the democratic process, and giving a voice to impoverished and marginalized people. In 2021, the Clinton Franciscans committed to a plan based on the Laudato Si' Action Platform (LSAP) – a call from the Vatican to work toward a more sustainable and just world. This episode of The “Center” is a conversation with the staff of the Franciscan Peace Center: Director of Strategic Planning, Jennifer Kryszak; Director of Digital Advocacy and Outreach, Laura Anderson; and Director of Programming, Marsha Thrall. Join us as we discuss how we approach the mission of active nonviolence and peacemaking and how the LSAP provides a framework for our efforts. Ayat Abuznade is a true gem to the world. Having the opportunity to converse with her, I've seen a heart that truly loves people and looks to make a true impact. In this Episode we discuss1. What gave her the desire to start this mission?2. The Problems Refugee's are facing in Lesvos 3. How they are helping the refugee situation?4. How we can helpIn 2014 Ayat’s life took an unexpected turn after volunteering at Zaatari Refugee Camp. Zaatari is the largest camp for Syrian refugees that has gradually evolved into a permanent settlement and is located at the border of Syria and Jordan. There she connected with many families and witnessed the devastating impact the war had on 80,000 of the world’s most vulnerable people. Yaseen, an 8-year-old boy stood shyly smiling behind several children with a warm gentle sparkle in his eyes that Ayat could never forget. She noticed his right arm was amputated and was determined to see what life looked like through Yaseen’s eyes. While in Damascus, Yaseen flew from a missile shell that tore parts of his left upper limb while trying to run for safety and shelter with his family to a nearby home. Yaseen’s story was one of thousands of children that were left with disabilities. Upon returning back to her home in Chicago, her view of the world completely changed. Life could never be the same. Ayat knew she would dedicate and spend the rest of her life making a difference in the lives of children and families fleeing conflict and living in poverty all over the world. She continued to travel immensely, volunteering at several camps that helped to protect people recovering from war. In 2015, Ayat met Salam while volunteering in Lesvos, Greece, which at that time was the epicenter for the refugee crisis sweeping Europe. There the real crisis had just begun. There were no large organized groups of help, just several small groups of volunteers who helped receive thousands of refugees a day arriving on dinghy boats and completely soaked wet, freezing, and disoriented. Witnessing nothing like this before she was completely overwhelmed and devastated by the situation. Many were not fortunate enough to make it safely and survive.Ayat vowed that she would continue to do anything possible to instill hope and happiness back in the lives of people and therefore continued to travel to various camps helping people suffering from crisis all over the world. In 2018 she returned back to Lesvos, Greece after hearing how neglected and overcrowded Moria Refugee Camp was and how it became known as the “the worst refugee camp on earth.” Since then, she’s continued to volunteer and contribute to the operations at the Hope and Peace Center founded in 2018 which serves as a safe space for women and children across Moria Camp. Here she felt she was beginning to witness true hope and happiness light back up in women and children’s eyes. She knew there would always be a need for more in the world and this is what inspired her to start Team Humanity USA in 2019.Website: https://teamhumanity.info/Ayats IG: https://www.instagram.com/ayatabuznade/Team Humanity IG: https://www.instagram.com/teamhumanity/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/madcasters)

Female leadership is a subject that has been highly-discussed for some time. And the facts out there clearly state we are losing pace. There’s a lot of work still to be done. Just as there’s work to be done to address a lack of diversity, inclusivity, and equity in organisations and businesses. One organization bringing the public and private sector together, and giving female leaders a voice, is the Nobel Peace Center. Oslo PAX, the beginnings of a movement from the Peace Center - featuring Nobel Laureates, changemakers, and activists as guests - highlights the need for action when it comes to diversity and gender inclusion in peace and war.So, this episode is all about Diversity, plus Leadership and Sustainability, seen through the lens of the Nobel Peace Prize and Nobel Prize-winners.Joining us to share her take on them is Kjersti Fløgstad, CEO of the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway. Kjersti has led a fascinating career spanning corporate and social sectors. She’s been in leadership positions since she was 30, a Director for one of Norway’s banks at 33, and the Secretary-General of UNICEF Norway for ten years. In this episode, you’ll hear how you as a business can gain from, and speed up, the process of diversity and sustainability. You’ll hear reflections on the qualities that make a good leader – based on experience, recognizing your own bias, and the barriers that still exist. And you can expect honest discussion around the experience of being a woman in a leadership role today and why it’s important that businesses and organisations come together. If you would like to learn more about the Nobel Peace Center and Oslo PAX visit their website: www.nobelpeacecenter.org/en/news/diversity-matters-gender-and-inclusion-in-peace-and-war And if you'd like to know more about Designit, you can find us on Instagram, LinkedIn and at www.designit.com Leave us a rating or review if you liked this episode – we’d love to know what’s on your mind so we can keep making this podcast better every time. And if you never want to miss an episode, consider subscribing.See you next time!// Photo credit for this episode's cover:With thanks to Ingvill Bryn Rambøl/Nobel Peace Center

Believe it or not, a lot of our success boils down to the relationships we have with others. It's dependant on the type of environment we set up around ourselves. In the book Outliers Malcolm Gladwell observes: "When we see the tallest tree in a forest, we know that it has come from a good seed. But we must also take into account that it has been planted in good soil, and that its leaves have been able to reach the sunlight unimpeded, that it was not shadowed by some larger tree. The tree’s good seed is its “innate” ability, but the combination of its circumstances have allowed it to achieve great heights." Malcom Gladwell - Outliers The same can be said for when you consider personal growth. The people we surround ourselves with will have a large impact on the person we become. Even further, the quality of the relationships we have with those around us will impact the level of effectiveness those interactions have. On October 6th, 2019 The Modern Man Panel and I sat down to discuss the importance of relationships and how they can positively or negatively affect us. We all know that one person that sucks the room dry once they arrive. Or the life of the party who is sure to get the energy going. Just like these two extremes can shape a room, the mild middle can slowly and affectedly alter your life. Cultivate the relationship you want to have with other people. Invite people to see the real issues you face. Finally, use vulnerability as a tool of strength, not a shield of weakness. Take a listen as Tyler Harris, Charles Russ, Tim Pecoraro, Jonathan Parker and I unpack what it means for men to improve the relationships in their lives. IN THIS EPISODE: Let’s say you have some questions on mentoring: What if you could ask a football player, a wrestler, a coach, a ship captain, a teacher, a physics historian, a published author, a person who lost most of their eyesight, a cancer survivor, and a director on several nonprofit boards, for their perspectives. You’d have a rich and diverse collection of opinions and advice, but getting a hold of all those people might be a bit difficult. We are lucky that today's guest, Dr. Terry M. Christensen, is all of those things. There are few people who have had careers with the wide ranging and multidisciplinary experiences that Terry has had. From his life-long love of football and wrestling both as a player and a coach, his time as a merchant marine captain, the loss of eyesight that reignited his academic career, his non-profit board service and his battle with cancer. Terry has done it all. And it’s given him some unique perspectives on the topic of mentoring and the value of passing wisdom along to the next generation. ABOUT OUR GUEST: From an early background in commercial fishing, Terry transitioned to the ocean-towing industry. In 1981, he earned a Merchant Marine Deck Officers License and continued his professional advancement with the vast majority of his merchant sea service being spent in Alaskan waters. From 1985-1988, Terry served as Chief Instructor of the U.S. Department of Labor Seamanship training program at Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, Oregon. He also served as Master of the Training Vessels INLAND CHIEFand BIG ED. In 1988, he returned to sea as a deck officer in the ocean towing and salvage trade. In 1990, Terry joined the Maritime Science Department at Clatsop Community College and became one of a select group of maritime instructors across the nation, who were authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard to prepare and administer professional examinations for Merchant Marine personnel. In 1994, Terry developed a degenerative disease of the optic nerve. The consequent loss of functional vision precipitated a change in career and he began the process of establishing the academic credentials that would allow him to return to teaching. He earned MS and PhD degrees in the History of Science from Oregon State University and has published several academic papers. Terry continues to volunteer as a coach in the wrestling and football programs at The George School in Newtown, PA. He also has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations including: The Peace Center, the Alumni Association of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Yardley Friends Meeting, and Friends Home and Village.
