Originally published Dec. 12, 2023Have you ever asked yourself the question: Why should I get out of bed? In today's episode, host Jason Wieland, Content Development Pastor at Saddleback Church, talks about his favorite book of 2023. It's called On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living by Alan Noble. This short, 104-page book is rich in its look at anxiety, depression, and other hardships of life. It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of suffering. For anybody who may not struggle with these issues themselves, Dr. Noble paints an important picture of what life is truly like for those in this daily fight. However, this book is truly one of hope as it reminds us of the reality of our good creation, the presence of our good Creator and the truth that your life is a testimony of that goodness - whether you are having a good day or not.Join Jason as he dives into this impactful, important book. This episode highlights some quotes from the book as Jason discusses why he finds this book so necessary and what makes it his book of the year.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. We've done many episodes of Doable Discipleship about identity, largely because it's such an important topic in a world that constantly tries to fight for the right to control your identity, but also because there's just so much to talk about, particularly from the Christian perspective. And today I want to add two more facets to that conversation: self-esteem and bias. The premise: who you think you are creates a bias, even an unconscious one, in how you receive input about your life and how you view other people. It affects how you handle success, failure, advice, friendships, and so much more. Christians have the opportunity to anchor their identity, and therefore their bias and self-esteem in two key biblical truths. To talk to us about bias, self-esteem, and these biblical truths is Dr. Erin Devers, professor of psychology and Indiana Wesleyan University and author of the new book, The Unbiased Self. Today, on Karl and Crew, we took an inward approach as we kicked off our weekly theme of "Mindset" with a discussion on mind renewal. As followers of Jesus, our minds are renewed as we draw nearer to Him because we shed our worldly thought processes to have Spirit-led thoughts. This transformation is necessary for believers because it allows us to mentally align with God’s will. We learned in Romans 12:2 that the Lord doesn’t want us to conform to the world but to be set apart, and to do this; we have to get rid of those ungodly thoughts. One of our guests, Asheritah Ciuciu, shared with us how she cast down those thoughts and replaced them with the delight of the Lord. Asheritah founded One Thing Alone Ministries and has authored several books, including “Delighting in Jesus- Rhythms to Restore Joy When You Feel Burdened, Broken, or Burned-Out.” Pastor Dr. Erwin Lutzer also shared insight on shifting our thinking to biblical thoughts. Pastor Lutzer is an award-winning author of numerous books, pastor, and speaker. He also is a featured speaker on two radio programs with Moody Church Media. There's a question at the heart of the new book “Delighting in Jesus” that caught my attention: it says, “I know I should read by Bible and pray every day, but I'm just not consistent. For many Christians, ‘daily devotions' and ‘spiritual disciplines' strike guilt and shame in our hearts. But what if we got it all wrong? What if our Christian experience hinges not on perfect spiritual disciplines, but on the perfect love of a Father who delights in us?” This has been a topic I've been interested in for a while now: what does relationship with Jesus really mean. And now there's a new word entering the conversation: delight. We often talk about joy or happiness, but I'm so grateful to my guest today, Asheritah Ciuciu, for focusing in on the word delight. Asheritah is the host of the Prayers of Rest Podcast and author of many books including Full, Bible & Breakfast, Walking with God, and her latest, Delighting in Jesus. In this conversation, Asheritah and I talk about why “delight” is an important word when thinking about our relationship with Jesus, why we don't need to be afraid of being broken, how to build your joy center in your brain, and much more. I want to note too, in the show notes for episode you'll find links to purchase Delighting in Jesus (which I highly recommend) and also a link to a devotional personality quiz that will help you understand better how God created you to feel most connected to him. I hope you enjoy both of these resources. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. It premiered in 2017 and now offers more than 400 episodes. Have you ever felt burdened, broken, or burned out? If so, you’re not alone. This week on The Love Offering podcast, I had the joy of sitting down with bestselling author Asheritah Ciuciu to discuss her new book, Delighting in Jesus: Rhythms to Restore Joy When You Feel Burdened, Broken, or Burned Out. In our conversation, Asheritah shares how life’s challenges—family dynamics, overcommitment, and external pressures—can rob us of the joy God desires for us. But the good news is that joy is not only possible but restorable. Here are some of the takeaways from our time together: Joy is cultivated by spending time with Jesus, who is the ultimate source of delight. Burnout often stems from overcommitment and misplaced priorities, but God offers rhythms of restoration. Neuroplasticity shows us that we can retrain our minds to seek and experience joy through intentional spiritual habits. Asheritah outlines five powerful rhythms for joy: worship, word, whisper, wonder, and walking. This conversation was a gentle reminder that we don’t have to navigate burnout and exhaustion alone. By turning to Jesus and adopting these life-giving rhythms, we can rediscover joy, even in the most difficult seasons. I pray Asheritah’s insights inspire you as much as they did me. Let’s commit to finding joy in Jesus together and allowing His presence to transform our daily lives. With love and gratitude,Rachael P.S. Keeping Christ at the center of the Christmas season is always a challenge. The hectic pace of life intensifies during December, and often our focus shifts to the never-ending list of responsibilities and chores to complete before the big day. Strategically celebrating Advent is a wonderful way to keep Christ central in all the commotion of gatherings, parties, concerts, baking, and buying. Utilizing Advent calendars, candles, and books help us to focus on the magnitude of what Christ accomplished in coming to earth while pointing us toward his return. Catherine's guest in this episode, Laurie Christine, has accumulated a wealth of devotional resources that will help enrich your Christmas season by celebrating Advent. Catherine and Laurie start by digging into the history of Advent, and then they highlight the great gift of celebrating God's hope, peace, joy, and love in line with each candle lit. Laurie also offers devotional and book recommendations for all ages to participate in the wonderful celebration of Advent. The Meaning of Advent: Learn about the rich historical roots of Advent, dating back to the 6th century, and how its observance can enhance the anticipation of both the first and second coming of Christ. Dive into The Action Bible Christmas: Laurie introduces this fantastic book featuring 25 imaginative stories related to the biblical Christmas story suitable for young children aged 3-9, providing delightful and engaging ways to teach the story of Jesus' birth. Discover Jotham's Journey Series: Catherine and Laurie delve into Arnold Ytreeide's four-book series that follows fictional accounts of Jesus' birth through the eyes of four different children. With devotional sections and intertwined stories, it's perfect for family Advent readings! Celebrate with Unwrapping the Names of Jesus: Laurie shares her love for Asheritah Ciuciu's devotional, which explores the various names of Jesus over four weeks, providing structured readings and activities for each Sunday of Advent. Creating a Jesse Tree: Laurie explains the tradition of the Jesse Tree, tracing Jesus's lineage with ornaments representing biblical figures. A beautiful way to journey through the anticipation of Christ's birth as a family. Resource Roundup: Laurie and Catherine recommend various devotional books and family activities, including "Unwrapping the Greatest Gift" by Ann Voskamp and "Remarkable Advent" by Shauna Lettler to help make your Advent season more meaningful. Catherine also shares a heartfelt personal story of finding hope during a difficult time, underscoring the essential themes of Advent: hope, peace, joy, and love. Does the idea of a “quiet time” or “devotions” bring up feelings of guilt or shame? Or does it simply sound boring to you? What if you could meet with Jesus in a way that literally brings you joy? What if instead of guilt and shame you were filled with anticipation at the very thought of being with God? That is what God invites us into. And Asheritah Ciuciu shows us how. In her new book, Delighting in Jesus, Asheritah Ciuciu shows us that joy originates from God, pulses at the heart of the gospel, and is promised to us as fruit from God’s Spirit. From a foundation of how we uniquely connect with God we can establish Rhythms of Delight that allow us to connect with God from where we are and find in Him the desires of our heart.Support the show: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wgnbSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

That’s what happens we make prayer a ritual, something we have to do. Something we feel we’ve got to get just right, or it won’t count. That’s religion, and religion always gets in the way of experiencing the love of Jesus. Wife, mom, author, and speaker Asheritah Ciuciu joins the podcast to help us jettison religion and learn to delight in Jesus! Perry shares how he deeply connected with Jesus last Saturday evening but wonders with Asheritah how he can experience that more often. Perry and Asheritah share about how prayer can get in the way of delighting in Jesus. When we look at prayer as a to do list. Then a huge barrier to delighting in Jesus is burnout. What do we do when we have zero energy for prayer? And Lucy, a Perry and Shawna listener asks, “When I stop doing, doing, doing, how do I get past the feeling that I should be doing something?” Asheritah reminds us of the truth that frees us from our frenzy! Also in this episode, Perry shares, “I have learned through my journey how to forgive myself, how to accept the forgiveness that Jesus offers that has no fine print.”Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If we do not know Jesus' love on a deeply personal level and encounter His love in our busy and full, real lives, then the spiritual disciplines devolve into legalism and empty works. Without recognizing how much we are loved and cared for, everything else we do in that relationship is a striving attempt to be loved. Because experiencing God's love for us is a gift we want to receive AND struggle with experiencing, I've invited Dr. Curt Thompson to join the show. In today's episode, you'll receive practical strategies and anchoring truths as we process moving God's love from head to heart. You'll learn: How to move Jesus's love for you from your head down to your heart How to experience grace in your real life, How solitude soothes your soul. And one simple exercise to help you pay attention to what you're paying attention to. Growing up in a missionary family in Romania, Asheritah CiuCiu began to have her life transformed as she learned to immerse herself in the Word of God. As a teenager with nothing but time on her hands, Asheritah would often spend hours reading her Bible and singing worship music. After being married and starting a family, free time was no longer a thing and Asheritah had to figure out what time with God could look like as a busy mom. The founder of the ministry “One Thing Alone” now helps other moms discover how to spend time with God when it feels like there is no time.

So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
It's hard to love difficult people. We know we are called to it, but there are just some people who are really, really hard to love. So, what do we do? Try harder? Muster up love by sheer willpower? We can try. But we will quickly find our true nature of frustration, exasperation, and resentfulness rearing its ugly head. We need a different way. We need to start with the heart. Asherita Ciuciu, bestselling author, speaker, and podcast host, knows something about this journey. She felt the calling to sacrificially love two people who were hard for her to love. She shares what worked and what didn't, what was wise and what wasn't, and why sacrificial love is at the heart of Lent. If you want to follow Jesus' command to love others as he has loved us, this podcast is a great place to start. Some highlights from our conversation: Asheritah shares her first experience with Lent and why it wasn't helpful. And how Advent helped her learn how to practice Lent as a season of preparation. She shares how Jesus modeled sacrificial love by giving the benefit of the doubt to others. We discuss how we can't just try harder to love people who are difficult to love, that the heart needs to be transformed. Asheritah shares how we can start the process of opening ourselves up this transforming work of Jesus. Asheritah shares openly about two experiences she had when trying to love well. One person had hurt her deeply, and it wound up opening the old wounds. She walks us through this process and how we can discern if we are called to love someone who has hurt us. She also shares about loving someone who was difficult to love just because they are different types of people and how she practically acted in love toward this person – and how it impacted their relationship. Asheritah also gives some great tips on how we can practice this season of lent with intentionality for ourselves, and if you have children, she gives some great tips on practicing Lent as a family. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Loving others can be hard. Especially those who are difficult to love. Yet, Jesus, in some of his last words to his disciples, invited us to love radically – as he loved us. Jesus calls this a new command. Which means this isn't optional for followers of Jesus. How is God calling you to love during this Lenten season? As you meditate on this command given by Jesus, allow the Spirit to help you notice something from these words that applies to your own life. Once you've listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head over to the next episode and listen to the interview with best-selling author and podcast host Asheritah Ciuciu. We discuss her Lent devotional, Uncovering the Love of Jesus, and her honest experience of loving others sacrificially. Learn how to cultivate a deep prayer life and pray effectively, including incorporating prayer in your daily rhythms in Grace In Real Life Ep 151 w/Asheritah Ciuciu. I've been talking to God since I was little. My prayer life started with those basic prayers of mimicking what my parents spoke and saying grace before meals. I'm pretty sure I went radio silent in high school and college. I told myself God was too busy when I was not even considering talking to Him. Becoming a mother grounded my prayer life, making it a lifeline and the only way I could come up for air. When I held a newborn and entertained an 18-month-old, my prayers were one word: Help. Now, I write out my prayers because of all the shiny squirrels in my head. My mind goes rogue if my hands don't remind it why we're here. Prayer seems like the simplest of practices: talking to God and hearing His voice back. And yet… it's a lot more difficult, isn't it? Because growing your faith through prayer is a skill that takes practice and creativity, and sometimes grit, I invited Asheritah Ciuciu to the show. Today, Asheritah walks us through how to cultivate a life of prayer, including how to Pray outside the box, Use the REST method of prayer And overcome these two common prayer challenges. How to cultivate a deep and effective prayer life “God, would you meet me here in this moment? Would you show me what it looks like to grow in my communication with you?” - Asheritah Ciuciu “When your prayers come from a sincere, honest heart, they please God.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “Let us not become complacent or somehow believe this is our destiny to be sub-par Christians who don't know how to talk with God.” - Asheritah Ciuciu If you'd like to learn more about developing a life of prayer, go here: A prayer for the Achiever #98: Spiritual Health: Praying to connect with the heart of Christ with Kimberly Coyle A Prayer for the Worrier Sign up here for A Holy Hush A Holy Hush: Reflections for Lent is a multi-part series sent only to those who sign-up and will offer simple reflections on the final days, death, and resurrection of Christ. Key quotes about prayer “When we look at what Scripture says about what prayer is, it's almost as common as breathing.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “Instead of believing the lie that we are not disciplined enough to be in prayer, we turn them [distractions] into prayer prompts.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “What if God is bringing thoughts we find distracting because He has a list of things He wants to talk with us about?” - Asheritah Ciuciu “All of who we are is safe with God.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “If you could hear Jesus praying in the room next door, what would He be praying? How would that embolden you to join Him?” - Asheritah Ciuciu “We have this problem of individualizing and privatizing our faith.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “You are not meant to walk through your wilderness or your storm alone. That's just not how God designed it.” - Asheritah Ciuciu “When you're in the wilderness, when you're in the storm, surround yourself with community who can pray for you, who can hold you, and you can borrow their faith.” - Asheritah Ciuciu As Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. I am so excited to share this special conversation with my (now, in-real-life) friend, Asheritah Ciuciu. Asheritah has been on the podcast before as we talked about her amazing Advent devotional, Unwrapping the Names of Jesus. Now, with a beautiful Children's Book newly released, Asheritah joins me to talk about the power of sharing our own stories with our kids, as we point to what Jesus has done in our lives. I loved learning a bit more about Asheritah and her husband (both Romanian) and the amazing things God has done in their lives. In this busy holiday season, I believe this conversation will be a blessing and so inspiring! I hope you love it as much as I have! www.monicaswanson.com/episode-187 Podcast page (for all episodes) www.monicaswanson.com/podcast
