In this episode, we speak with Hamid Dabashi about his new book, After Savagery: Gaza, Genocide, and the Illusion of Western Civilization (Haymarket, 2025), published by Haymarket Books. Written amid the ongoing war in Gaza, the book confronts what Dabashi describes as the moral and philosophical crisis of the modern West. After Savagery challenges long-standing traditions of Western thought, arguing that their universal claims often conceal a history of exclusion and erasure. Dabashi calls for readers to reckon with the intellectual foundations that have shaped contemporary understandings of humanity, violence, and colonialism. At the same time, he finds hope in art, literature, and film — works that, in his view, keep alive the possibility of a shared and liberated imagination. For Dabashi, Palestine becomes both a specific struggle and a universal metaphor for resistance and renewal.Joe WilliamsHistory PhD researcher at the University of Coimbra and translator website- Censorship and Sacralisation of Politics in the Portuguese Press during the Spanish Civil War- "Year X of the National Revolution" — Salazarist Palingenetic Myth in the Diário da Manhã Learn more about your ad choices. “A classe média vai continuar pagando o pato. A tabela não tem correção desde 2015”, ressaltou.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CORDIScovery – unearthing the hottest topics in EU science, research and innovation
About three quarters of the population in the EU are urbanites. Are you living in an inclusive area, with parks and public spaces you and the other local residents have had a say in designing? Or is that something that seems out of your reach? Nature-based solutions, or NBSs, co-creation, living labs – what do these terms mean and why are they important? Let's turn to our three guests today, all of whom benefited from research and innovation funding: Darko Ferčej is head of the EU project Unit within the Slovenian non-profit institute, E-zavod. His area of interest is transforming policy theories into practical changes that benefit people's lives in urban environments. Laura Fregolent is professor of Urban Planning at the University of Venice in Italy. Over the years she has investigated the processes of urban transformation and sprawl, and the social impact of housing dynamics. Gonçalo Canto Moniz is a professor of Architecture and researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. He is fascinated by the way co-creation of nature-based solutions within our cities can promote more inclusive urban neighbourhoods.

Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 381The Saint of the day is Saint Elizabeth of PortugalSaint Elizabeth of Portugal’s Story Elizabeth is usually depicted in royal garb with a dove or an olive branch. At her birth in 1271, her father Pedro III, future king of Aragon, was reconciled with his father James, the reigning monarch. This proved to be a portent of things to come. Under the healthful influences surrounding her early years, she quickly learned self-discipline and acquired a taste for spirituality. Thus fortunately prepared, Elizabeth was able to meet the challenge when at the age of 12, she was given in marriage to Denis, king of Portugal. She was able to establish for herself a pattern of life conducive to growth in God's love, not merely through her exercises of piety, including daily Mass, but also through her exercise of charity, by which she was able to befriend and help pilgrims, strangers, the sick, the poor—in a word, all those whose need came to her notice. At the same time she remained devoted to her husband, whose infidelity to her was a scandal to the kingdom. Denis, too, was the object of many of her peace endeavors. Elizabeth long sought peace for him with God, and was finally rewarded when he gave up his life of sin. She repeatedly sought and effected peace between the king and their rebellious son Alfonso, who thought that he was passed over to favor the king's illegitimate children. She acted as peacemaker in the struggle between Ferdinand, king of Aragon, and his cousin James, who claimed the crown. And finally from Coimbra, where she had retired as a Franciscan tertiary to the monastery of the Poor Clares after the death of her husband, Elizabeth set out and was able to bring about a lasting peace between her son Alfonso, now king of Portugal, and his son-in-law, the king of Castile. Reflection The work of promoting peace is anything but a calm and quiet endeavor. It takes a clear mind, a steady spirit and a brave soul to intervene between people whose emotions are so aroused that they are ready to destroy one another. This is all the more true of a woman in the early 14th century. But Elizabeth had a deep and sincere love and sympathy for humankind, an almost total lack of concern for herself, and an abiding confidence in God. These were the tools of her success. They call it “settled science” that vaccines don't cause autism, so then what causes autism? Wikipedia says there's no known cause, and that it's most likely genetic and possibly environmental. There's no known cure, and it's heavily emphasized that vaccines don't cause autism. So let's take a look at the facts. Dr. Coimbra, a Brazilian neurologist, found that people with autism have chronic inflammation in the brain that's not related to a microbe or a pathogen. It's also important to note that 70% of autistic children have higher rates of autoimmune conditions.Vaccines do not create an adequate immune response without an adjuvant. Aluminum compounds are the most commonly used vaccine adjuvants. Research shows that aluminum is toxic on multiple levels. Its neurotoxicity manifests in learning, concentration, memory, and speech deficits. When injected with a vaccine, it also crosses the blood-brain barrier. From 1980 to 2023, vaccine rates, aluminum exposure, and autism rates have significantly increased. In 2023, 1 in 36 children were diagnosed with autism and had the most aggressive vaccine schedule to date.Children are exposed to 5000 mcg of aluminum by age 6 with the current vaccine schedule. Most studies on vaccines use aluminum adjuvant placebos or other aluminum-containing vaccines in the control group, which is problematic. Other developed countries without such an aggressive vaccine schedule are not seeing the same levels of autism. Similarly, the Amish community, which is largely unvaccinated, has very low rates of autism. Dr. Coimbra utilizes the following protocol to reduce the symptoms of autism.1. 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 2. Propolis 3. Oral silica (monomethylsilanetriol) 100 to 200 mg 3 times per day 4. 4 grams of glycinate for hyperactivityA low-carb diet can also be beneficial for children with autism.Dr. Coimbra explains that the kidneys do not eliminate aluminum when injected with a vaccine. It remains in the organs and within the immune cells, and enters the brain carried by these cells. Did you know that many conditions treated by Big Pharma can be inexpensively corrected with vitamin D?Leo Pharma and Almirall are two pharmaceutical companies that specialize in dermatology. Many of their products contain synthetic vitamin D for skin problems. Coincidentally, these companies also played a role in the sun-phobia movement. The sun is one of the best remedies for skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. You need at least 10,000 IUs of vitamin d3 every day to maintain healthy vitamin D levels!Sunbathing was once popular worldwide and was used to prevent tuberculosis and various health conditions. However, after the development of antibiotics, its popularity drastically declined.Dr. William Grant has done extensive research on vitamin D. He explains that 84,532 papers have been published on vitamin D, the most studied bioactive molecule. Despite the evidence, there is still controversy regarding the health benefits of vitamin D. Tens of thousands of research studies have been conducted on the benefits of vitamin D for cancer. Big Pharma has influenced studies that discredit the benefits of vitamin D. Only small amounts of vitamin D were used in most studies that do not show favorable outcomes with vitamin D. Dr. Cicero Coimbra, who developed the Coimbra protocol, has seen a 90% success rate in using vitamin D for autoimmune diseases. Some people have vitamin D resistance, which involves a genetic problem with vitamin D. Blood tests can not accurately determine vitamin D deficiency. It is vital to keep your vitamin D levels over 50 ng/mL to avoid vitamin D deficiency.
