In this episode of Need to Know we welcome book contributors Liz Ríos and Lisa Rodriguez-Watson to discuss resistance against empire, and embracing the confrontation of the Jesus-way. We explore the lived experiences of women leaders, the role of resistance against oppressive structures, and the significance of listening to marginalized voices. Liz and Lisa each emphasize the necessity of love, community, and the rejection of fear even as we deal with those who don't agree with us, as we move towards a flourishing church.Show NotesLink to order the book: Need to Know: Empowering Female Leadership and Why It's Essential for the Future of the Churchtakeaways* Women's empowerment is essential for the flourishing of the church.* Collaborative leadership is necessary to counteract the influence of empire.* Listening to marginalized voices is vital for understanding the impact of empire.* Resistance against oppressive structures is ongoing work.* Maintaining grace and hope is important for leaders facing challenges.* The church's decline is often due to a failure to embrace justice and inclusivity.* Love and community are foundational for church growth and health.* Education and awareness are critical for understanding the complexities of leadership.keywordschurch leadership, empowerment of women, collaborative leadership, resistance, allies, voices from the margins, Billy Graham rule, community, love, justiceSound Bites* "The church needs women."* "Don't be afraid."* "The empire runs on fear."Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Need to Know book03:28 The Impact of Empire and the Kingdom Way of Doing Things06:32 Collaborative Leadership and the Need for Change10:46 The At Odds Nature of Empire and the Church16:31 Choosing Life and Undoing the Co-Opting of the Church19:07 Shifting the DNA of the Church and Fostering Community21:23 The Importance of Love and Following Jesus26:49 The Holy Work of Resistance28:08 Subverting Tokenism and Embracing Real Influence29:15 Challenging the Billy Graham Rule and Fear-Based Mindsets33:39 Education, Awareness, and Listening as Tools for Change Get full access to Right Side Up: Danielle Strickland at daniellestrickland.substack.com/subscribe

While in town to speak at the Chosen Women's Conference, Pastor Carolyn Haas joined us in the studio to share about God's faithfulness throughout her life. Growing up in a family of faith, walking away from God, losing her father to suicide, and then returning to church after her boyfriend, Peter, had a life-changing encounter with God. Now her husband, Pastor Peter and Carolyn lead Substance Church in Minnesota, combining their strengths and weaknesses to complement a fruitful ministry. We also talk to Carolyn about some common themes (and "debate-like" discussions) we've unpacked on the podcast including "The Billy Graham Rule," women in church leadership, and how much a Christian should be invested in spiritual warfare. At the top of the episode, Roy Jacques, Tomelex Copeland, and Joey Svendsen talk to Lynne Stroy about her experiences at Chosen through the years and they assess the fine line between harmless joking and disrespectful ridicule when it comes to the things of the spiritual.Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page I YouTubeOn this EpisodeCarolyn Haas / Instagram Lynne Stroy, host / InstagramJoey Svendsen, host / InstagramRoy Jacques, host / FacebookTomelex Copeland, host / FacebookExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverTheme song: Joel T. In many evangelical circles, the practice of avoiding "alone time" with a member of the opposite sex can be common. The idea is to avoid the temptation to connect emotionally, or physically with another person outside of one's own marriage. Evangelist, Billy Graham and his team lived by a set of rules to uphold integrity, and this one, nicknamed, “The Billy Graham Rule” is the topic of our discussion. One of our guests, Pastor Chip Judd, has counseled countless married couples through affairs and divorces. He believes that the intimacy (not necessarily physical) found in one-on-one encounters opens the door to trouble and is not worth the risk. But, Bea Wray and Charlotte Cox, both part of the Seacoast family, claim to be negatively impacted by this “rule." They argue that it puts males and females on unequal professional ground, with a disparity in males having more opportunities, especially in church ministry, where most pastors are men. They also believe that this rule doesn't get to the root of the issue and could even exasperate the problem it's setting out to solve.Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page I YouTubeOn this EpisodeBea Wray / Instagram / Book / WebsiteChip Judd / Instagram / WebsiteCharlotte Cox / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. Listen in as we explore the sensitive and controversial topic of the Billy Graham Rule, a principle where men, particularly in Christian circles, avoid spending time alone with women who are not their wives. The conversation unpacks the heated debate sparked by a tweet about the rule's negative implications for women, discussing feelings of degradation and limitation in both professional and personal realms. We also address the necessity of boundaries and the challenge of maintaining meaningful interactions across genders, reflecting on the rule's origin as a protective measure for Billy Graham and its modern-day application. As we navigate this complex subject, we invite listeners to consider the nuanced aspects of creating safe yet inclusive spaces within Christian ethics and relationships. This candid discussion is essential listening for anyone seeking wisdom in their interactions with the opposite sex. We lay out foundational principles of respect, protection, and avoiding assumptions that can enlighten your approach to setting boundaries. Illuminating personal anecdotes and scriptural references, including the oft-quoted 1 Thessalonians 5:22, contribute to a rich tapestry of insights into how we can battle lust through restoration and cultivate edifying friendships. Church leaders, ministry workers, and anyone invested in the health of Christian communities will find value in our exploration of these sensitive yet critical topics. Was the "Billy Graham Rule" needed between him and these two friends (the co-workers), Sarah Eller and Liz Miller? While Joey and Sarah are more comfortable with taking into consideration many of the cautions this rule represents, Liz finds it dated and believes it may be needed for "sad reasons." The Billy Graham rule is an often touted rule for ministry and life. You don't meet with someone of the opposite sex alone. Simply right? Not really. Ryan Beaty joins Aaron to talk about the origins of the Billy Graham rule, what it was actually about when Graham's ministry instituted their rules for ministry, and how the church in the following years got it all wrong - because of poor sense-making. Sense-making helps us not only understand the world around us, but can be used to make poor decisions along the way. Join Aaron and Ryan in this discussion on what sense-making is and how we can be better at it.
Today's Beach Talk begins with a review of the 100th Episode aired last week with guests Darcy McKenzie and Ken Fong. Ken and Betsey turn their attention to the tragic shooting at the Covenant (Elementary) School in Nashville, Tennessee where three 9-year-old students and three adults, including the school's headmaster, were brutally murdered. The shooter was quickly taken out by courageous first responders who arrived on the scene within minutes. The perpetrator used legally obtained automatic weapons to terrorize the school. Ken and Betsey reflect on the reports of the shooter's identity. They affirm that the killer is entirely responsible for the heinous crime, no question. However, the manifesto left behind by the perpetrator indicates that Audrey Hale identified as transgender. It raises questions about the conservative school's treatment of the LGBTQ community and the shooter's experience there as a young student. Right-wing politicians and religious zealots across the country have targeted transgender individuals, young and old, with all manner of restrictive, moralistic and sometimes draconian legislation and policies. Ken turns the conversation to a new subject. He shares his most recent read - Celebrities for Jesus: How Personas, Platforms, and Profits Are Hurting the Church by Katelyn Beaty. Ken asks Betsey about here experience with "The Billy Graham Rule" in her role as an editor for Christian organizations. Become a Patron: www.patreon.com/beachedwhitemaleSupport the show

This week we start our new series The Sex Education We Wish We Had and our first guest Doug Brown Harvey, the co-founder of the Harvey Institute, an international education training, consulting, and supervision service for improving healthcare through the integration of sexual health. Since 1993, he has been developing and implementing a sexual health-based treatment approach for men out of control, sexual behavior. His book, treating Out of Control, Sexual Behavior, Rethinking Sex Addiction, written with co-author Michael Vito was published in 2015. If you Google his name, you'll get access to his other books. Doug is a licensed marriage and family therapist, certified sex therapist, supervisor and certified sex therapist in San Diego. He has taught and consulted on sexuality and sexual health with Biden University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota. The term “Sex Addiction” (14:50). “The idea was sex addiction was supposed to become a diagnosis […] there was an effort to create some sort of mental health diagnosis for this human behavior of dis-regulated sexual behavior […] there's always been a kind of contentious notions about whether that's an accurate description because there can be a lot of shame and judgment that goes with sex addiction. It's not just, gee, you have this condition, you have a condition that is the source of shame,” Doug explains the history of the term sex addiction, which has a nuanced history that ropes in shame, safe spaces, and a way to classify sexual behavior that did not fit within societal expectations. New Safe Spaces (16:40). “The idea of being a sex addict was relieving to people in its time? Sure. Yeah. It gave them an honorable space to go and openly discuss what they were doing in rooms outside of churches, outside of therapy offices, outside of places where stigma and shame might be commonplace.” Doug highlights how the diagnosis of “sex addict” gave people in that era a safe space, where they are not alone and do not have to turn to places that shame them (churches) but instead were offered resources and a community. “It was kind of a breath of fresh air to walk into these spaces. You were out of isolation. There was no internet back in those days. It was compelling to sit in a room and meet other people who weren't monsters.” The Billy Graham Rule (28). “I think for me, that idea of, well, I don't want to hurt anybody. I don't want to cause pain to anybody. And learning early on that we talk about the Billy Graham rule. This idea is that if men are in rooms with women by themselves, like leave the door open. Inherently speaking, what's going to happen is that the man is going to do something violating toward the woman. It's just gonna happen. So leave the door open. That way, you know, that other people could at any moment kind of walk in. Well, that's depressing. That is depressing. That's pessimistic.” Jeremiah opens up about the effect the Billy Graham rule and purity culture have had on him, and how in many spaces men are conditioned to believe their sexuality is inherently violent. The Power of Language (32). “Men don't walk into a therapist's office with useful language for talking about sex. All they have is what they've been taught, the popular culture language, which is very stigmatizing. Look at the Billy Graham rule. I mean, somebody's gonna walk into my office thinking that they're a dangerous monster” Doug talks about how most men do not walk into therapeutic spaces with the language for talking about sex and sexual health. Media has a huge impact on sex, and the language we use, he gives the example later of how when some men say “jacking off” he uses the language of “solo sex.” Doug however never forces his clients to use this language but notices them start to use it over time, which shows the power of simple changes. A Woman's Humanity and Male Desire (43:24) Julia asks a thought-provoking question: “As a woman who has experienced quite a bit of sexual harassment and objectification, how do you then talk about the beauty of desire and for men who are attracted to women? How do you do that in a way that's more respectful to a woman's humanity?” Which Doug answers by saying, “So what we have to do is teach people the difference between pleasure and politics. How do you enjoy your pleasure and be respectful and be aware of patriarchy? Be aware of sexism. Be aware of misogyny. That is another narrative. But the world of pleasure is also another narrative. And so we have to honor both.”
Some call it the Billy Graham Rule, others the Mike Pence Rule. Regardless of the name, there's an idea amongst Christians that married people can't be friends with someone of the opposite gender. It even got Matt Chandler suspended. But is a hard rule against it really the way it should be? This week we talk about the friendship dynamics with the opposite gender when you're married.__________________Watch on YouTube:https://youtu.be/HrlN82ZKjcoBuy merch or share your youth group story at:https://unlearningyouthgroup.com/Follow us on social:http://instagram.com/jonathan_caronehttp://instagram.com/ericw712https://www.tiktok.com/@jonathan_caronehttps://www.tiktok.com/@ericw712https://www.twitter.com/@jonathan_caronehttps://www.twitter.com/@ericw712Show theme song: High School - 90's Kids Hosted on Acast. Summary | Is the Billy Graham Rule Above Reproach? What do I mean by this question? It's been suggested by many holding to biblical sexual ethic that the Billy Graham Rule is a prudential “rule of thumb” intended to mitigate the temptation for sexual sin. But is this true? As I've discussed and interacted with Christians over the years, I've found there two basic interpretations of this rule. Either it's a blanket, hard and fast rule, or it's a good thing to consider in particular circumstances with particular people. The former interpretation comes from Billy Graham himself, and the latter comes from an assumption made about the content of the rule. This assumption is simply wrong. Making prudential boundaries for oneself, to be used in particular circumstances with particular people is not at issue in this episode. By it's very definition, boundaries require an act of discernment. The Billy Graham Rule, on the other hand, requires forgoing discernment and is from motivations that demonstrate it's a rule not above reproach, and therefore un-Christian. Main Points of Discussion 00:00 Introduction 01:27 What is the Billy Graham Rule and a thought experiment. 06:13 What does it mean to be “above reproach?” 11:38 Why Billy Graham created his rule and its implications 15:47 What the Billy Graham Rule is not 18:55 Concluding thoughts Resource Links What is the Billy Graham Rule? The Cale Clarke Show - Today's issues from a Catholic perspective.
The late Protestant evangelist Billy Graham is trending Twitter because of his "rule" of never being alone with a woman other than his wife. Strong reactions both for and against this "rule" abound. Cale asks his listeners, "Where do you stand on this?"
David Mathis | The infamous “Billy Graham Rule” is not actually a rule, but a resolution — and just one of four that the evangelist made in 1948.
Billy Graham had a rule about never being alone in a room with a woman that wasn't his wife. We chat about how this rule has been adopted, revised, and distorted by some spiritual leaders today. We also chat about what it takes to be a college professor. And we also ponder how many times Jesus said, "Baby!"
This week we have another BONUS EPISODE! There is no guest for this one and instead Meghan and Cortland spend the episode discussing navigating relationship through deconstruction. We discuss the Billy Graham Rule which is the practice popularized by the late evangelist which said that married men should never be alone with any woman that wasn't their wife. This "rule" becomes a jumping off point for us to talk about breaking away from heteronormativity and compulsive (and toxic) monogamy. No matter your sexual orientation, relationship structure, or gender identity almost all of us have found that the way we were told to form and practice meaningful relationships in evangelicalism was limited and often unhelpful. Come along as we wander through this conversation, learn from each other, and answer some listener questions! As always, we love hearing from our listeners. Please consider leaving a rate and review on Apple Podcasts and reach out to say hello on social media! Twitter: Thereafter, Cortland, Meghan Instagram: Thereafter, Cortland, Meghan
[At top of episode, Ellen, Ryan and Joey discuss Ryan's ignoring of God, why it's a bit morbid when a Christian asks "was he/she a believer" after some one dies, and how the church is trying to convince Ellen's friend to stay with her cheating husband because he "reads the word" and "it was only a blowjob."]For our main talk, biographical author, George Azar, lived it and wrote a book for us to peer into his journey from leading vocational ministry as a pastor (and as a gay man) to “eventually having enough" and leaving Christianity all together. He shares his story here. Joey and George discuss the senselessness of appealing to “traditional theology” as a standard not to evolve past for the reason of "God ever changes." This ideology seems to assume that God hasn't anything further to say about the teachings in the bible and no more revelatory direction for humanity. Pretty boring God, if you ask me. Joey shares how hard it was to maintain his un-affirming views of homosexuality when close friends of his shed light on her/his relationship with the Holy Spirit, the journey of diligent searching for the truth of God's view on sexuality, and the current peace they have found in pursuing gay companionship. George and Jack reflect on the prospect of him being an adult gay man in the very much less accepting world we lived in, just 20 years ago. Joey takes the opportunity to get a “Billy Graham Rule” critique from a gay man, the two discuss the dynamics of gay Christians fellowshipping with non-affirming ones, and Joey asks if the word “homosexual” is even appropriate terminology anymore. On today's program, we take a look at the so-called “Billy Graham Rule.” We have updates on a couple of religious liberty cases that will have an impact on Christian ministries, and we have the latest on Hillsong's Brian Houston. He has taken a sabbatical in advance of his criminal trial. We begin today with a history making move by the Southern Baptist Convention. So, if you have a story you'd like us to cover, or a ministry that you think needs a closer look, please email us. Our email is info@155.138.219.249. That will come directly to my desk, and we'll take it from there. New York Times best-selling author, Kristin Kobes Du Mez wrote Jesus and John Wayne which is "a sweeping, revisionist history of the last seventy-five years of white evangelicalism and reveals how evangelicals have worked to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism―or in the words of one modern chaplain, with a 'spiritual badass.'” She claims the key to understanding this transformation is recognizing the centrality of popular culture in contemporary American evangelicalism. Kristin Kobes Du Mez is a professor of history at Calvin University and the author of A New Gospel for Women. She has written for the Washington Post, Christianity Today, Christian Century, and Religion & Politics, among other publications. Recently she's been a major contributing voice on Christianity Today's The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill Podcast. Here we talk about the historical timeline of how culture has viewed gender, how these views have changed through the years, and how the sort of American nationalism we currently see is fairly a new thing (1970s). We talk the role John Eldredge's “Wild at Heart” book played into this mess, the great harm of "the Billy Graham Rule" and how institutionally, the church really isn't tending towards healthier postures with gender. Regulars to the show, Chip Judd (30+ years counseling experience) and Ellen Mauro debate and discuss the risks of spending "alone time" with the opposite gender in date-like scenarios, car rides, closed doors, out of town business trips. Is this playing with fire? Or is this a dated policy that churches need to abort from, so females can stop feeling like they are merely hot-bodies, dangerous, predatory, male-slaying dragons? These mid-week “Extra” episodes are a chance for us to go deep with a particular topic, and today I'm delighted to have on the program Stephen Mansfield. Stephen Mansfield has written more than 20 books, but he first came to wide attention in 2003 with his book “The Faith of George W. Bush,” which made the New York Times Bestseller List. His books on Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Winston Churchill have focused on how the faith of leaders impacts and informs their public life. I wanted to have Stephen on the program because of his unique insights into how faith impacts leadership, but in particular, I wanted to talk with him about an essay he wrote in 2019 when Billy Graham died. It was an essay that talked about an important meeting that took place at the beginning of Billy Graham's career that allowed him to lead a life of integrity, and to finish that life scandal-free. Given the scandals facing the church today, I think it's a message we need to hear. Stephen Mansfield divides his time between Nashville, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. Before we go, I want to remind you that my book Faith-Based Fraud is finally available for sale to the public. Last year, we self-published an edition of 500 copies and gave them away to our donors. Thanks to the generosity of many of you, they didn't last long. That motivated us to find a “real publisher,” Wild Blue Press out of Denver Colorado, and they're bringing out a hardback, paperback, ebook, and audiobook version of Faith Based Fraud. The paperback and ebook versions are now available. You can find them by going to Amazon or other online book retailers. I hope you'll get a copy today. Here at MinistryWatch we bring you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective. Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth. I'm Warren Smith, and – until next time – May God bless you.
