Speaking Of Reliability: Friends Discussing Reliability Engineering Topics | Warranty | Plant Maintenance

Many engineers write a report like we do a journal - we did this, then this, came across this problem, solved it, and THEN found the answer. This is not useful! Your audience is not interested in your journey - they are interested in where you got to. Your destination. So you have to start with that. Because they won't be going on the journey with you. You can do the 'best' analysis and research in the world, but if your report doesn't make the case well - it is all for nothing. What can we say, cadets -- even after promising to take the week off, we couldn't resist the allure of Thanksgiving leftovers, so we rounded up a few recent bits that had to get cut for time, added some nutmeg and cinnamon, reheated it using the "pizza" setting in the microwave, and VOILA! A Frankenstein-foodie mix of recent news and commentary from Charles, Malcolm, and Mike that's somehow even better than when it was served fresh -- or at least that's what we'll tell you until it's gone! Dig into stories about the strange finale of Apple's lawsuit against camera maker Red, the latest on Disney+, great news about more Apple health studies, tech rivals working together for the environment, but Apple working alone to fix a Silicon Valley problem. There's also more about Apple Card bias-gate, the Germans legislating things they know nothing about, our usual rounds of That Can't Be Right (about "5G") and Engineering Report (a cool new drive and a great new set of headphones), plus a plug for Charles' appearance on CFAX Victoria radio and much more. Take a break from avoiding discussing politics with your family and dig in, cadets -- your Thanksgiving holiday relief crew have arrived!

It’s New Goodies Eve, cadets, when we traditionally sit around the holographic fire, drink our Tang and tell tales of great speculation and foul shenanigans ahead of Tuesday’s missive from the Mothership! It should cover mainly iPhones and new Apple Watches in one form or another; there may be some rumors made true, and some rumors laid waste to, along with the distinct possibility of a few small surprises. It’s the most wonderful time of the space year! Co-Cap’ns Mike and Charles go over a few things to expect, and mind-warp to 2020 for next year’s potential hardware, perhaps including a new Siri device! There’s also the usual assortment of legal and security trouble for Google and Facebook (with the promise of more coming soon), the return of the Galaxy Fold (good luck getting a review unit anytime soon!), brand-new Galaxy Note 10+ benchmarks that are bound to disappoint buyers, more about the forthcoming USB4 (the artist formerly known as Thunderbolt 3), and Engineering Report features new drives, device tags, Qi chargers, and thoughts on upgrading the Mac Steam app. All this and how to recover your AirPods when you drop them into the anti-matter drives, cadets, so remember to don your does-it-matter gear (to cancel the effects) before jury-rigging a rescue prod and dive in to the 150th episode of ... Elsewhere, the DOJ gives the "new T-Mobile" a lifeline, the House passes an anti-robocall bill, LG catches HomeKit fever, and it's rumor season once again -- and that's not all! There's also the behind-the-scenes story of last week's warp-core meltdown (lucky we had backups!), some unusually great news from corporate America, Bloomberg still won't own up to their fabricated "spy chip" story, the Galaxy Fold is threatening to return in September, the Attorney General launches a distraction investigation, Equifax pays out for its data breach, and Amtrak's Wi-Fi amounts to flakes on a train! All this and an Engineering Report on new gear and an overview of the current Desktop Publishing app offerings, cadets, so set the WAYBAC Machine to the early 1990s and strap in for holographic graphic artists debating the merits of Pagemaker versus MS Publisher! Even better, they appear to have no real privacy or security policies in place for this sort of thing! Just what you want in a smart speaker. But wait, there's more! Is iTunes gonna get broken up? Is the new Disney+ coming to Apple TV? Is Netflix mad at AirPlay? Did Apple really play a role in the imaging of a black hole? Is YouTube TV a mediocre deal? There wasn't that much news this week, cadets, but what there was was mind-numbingly dumb. The USB overlords have lost their minds, phone-hacking boxes were found on Ebay, New York is investigating apps that leak data to FaceBook, Apple shareholders never tire of pointless proposals that go down in flames, Comcast phones fail basic security, and Bloomberg is still lying about compromised servers, four months later. Huawei watched Samsung introduce an overpriced toy for way too much money and said "hold my beer," Thunderclap turns out not to be applause for Thunderbolt, Qualcomm has basically written off any future Apple business, T-Mob and Sprint started to sorta-kinda own up on "5G" rollouts, the "celeb-gate" guy got a slap on the wrist (he may like that sort of thing, though). There is some good news of course -- like forthcoming iPads and Apple's latest services, Apple Music ruling the US record industry while Apple Watch rules the smartwatch (and "dumbwatch" market as well), more Siri shortcuts and Apple educational videos, plus Girls Who Code and more gear for Engineering Report. That said, we're still going to advice a full hazmat suit for this one cadets -- teh stoopid, IT BURNS!

Thanks for coming back from shore leave, cadets, but this may be our last one for a while: you turn your back for *one second* and every tech company out there gets into legal hot water! Facebook, already trying to fight off a record-setting, multi-billion dollar fine from the FTC, has been caught bribing developers to give it *incredibly* sensitive data from the apps you use without telling you. An iOS app was discovered peddling hard drugs, Google "forgot" to tell you that your Nest device has a mic on it, Huawei caught stealing from Apple, Amazon runs away from New York, one of Apple's lawyers was crooked and ... oh yeah! ... Samsung had a scandal-free launch of a ton of new gear! Of course, Apple is planning its own event that may feature both a video service and hardware and who knows what else, Ming-Chi Kuo reads the tea leaves for the rest of 2019, Apple fights back in China and gets some good news about HomePod, and Mike and Charles speculate on what might be coming both in March and by the time WWDC rolls around in June. All this plus Intel possibly spoiling the ARM-based Mac 2020 surprise, Adobe figuring out a fix for a speaker-blowing Premiere bug, new speculation on the forthcoming Mac Pro, an Apple Music promo and a possible Apple credit card, more "5G" malarkey, Kroger being Kroger, That Can't Be Right, a quick Engineering Report, Apple Watch saves some more lives, Steve Jobs wins a Grammy, and Spectrum actually offers cord-cutters a tempting cheap deal to hook them back on TV again. It was a real shenaniga-looza fest this week, cadets, with plenty of bad news adjacent to or directly involving Apple and most of the other big tech firms, Microsoft (somehow) excepted. Apple played hardball with both bugs and business partners, Facebook got caught, Google fessed up, and the FBI had to get real on an industrial spy. Speaking of spying, people were freaking out about a possible FaceTime bug, but ordering a copy of the Amazon Echo Show that does exactly the same thing ... and speaking of trouble, the US dropped charges on Huawei and wrapped up its case against Qualcomm, and we're just **starting to scratch the surface** of this crazy week! On the less-bad front, Apple would have had a record-bushing quarter but for that one thing (thanks, CHINA ...), some Mac malware and Siri shortcut concerns are only remote dangers (for now), and a German court tossed half of Qualcomm's lawsuits against Apple. Mike and Charles congratulate themselves on correctly predicting former Governor Scott Walker's deal with Foxconn was going to be a trainwreck, and the admission by AT&T and Verizon that no, "5G" isn't actually happening this year (and will barely get off the ground in 2020). There is some good news (aside from 90 percent of Apple's Q1 report, that is) -- such as American Airlines giving Apple Music subscribers completely free access to the service on their flights, and Verizon including Apple Music in their premium plans. But there's also the rather dodgy "portless" smartphones out of China, a third appearance of old iPhone SE on clearance, Ultraviolet shutting down, and making sure your loved ones have a path to your important digital photos and such. There's some new gear in the loading bay for Engineering Report -- and an insurance company that promises not to abuse your health data if you'll take their shiny gift of an Apple Watch you have to work out (but to be fair, it may very well save your life). Buckle up, cadets, we've overloaded the ship -- and it's gonna be kind of a rough landing!

Meanwhile, Mike and Charles focus on another officer of the ship who played a huge role in events this week: Major FAIL! If you were a company or government planning to seriously drop the ball, this was the week to do it -- from Qualcomm's bungled legal strategy, to British Airways handing out your credit card info; from Mspy losing a notebook full of login credentials, to Mac apps collecting data they shouldn't; the good news in the tech world is pretty thin on the ground this time around. There was a surprising amount of turbulence on the journey through the week's tech news this time, cadets, and we're sorry it happened to come just as you were trying to eat your Space Food Sticks and Dippin' Dots. Oops. From a surprise resignation from Intel to Apple attracting lawsuits like magnets attract science geeks, two of the biggest players in tech had a pretty bad week. It's merger season as well, with the lack of net neutrality in the US acting as an accelerant, so it's getting pretty steamy in the ol' Javelin -- just in time for the solstice! Among the items forcing us to deploy the heat shielding: T-Mobile and Sprint trying (again) to tie the knot, Disney buying 21st Century Fox, the "failure" of the latest Star Wars-related movie, and how there's now no (safety) net neutrality to cushion the consequences. Apple announced a keyboard repair program for the small percentage of late-model MBPs and MacBooks that have issues, ITC seems to be leaning towards Qualcomm in that lawsuit, and the Supremes have or are going to weigh in on a few related matters (sadly, they will not be singing their opinion). Tim Cook tumbles like he's born under punches, an iPhone without Lightning is like a Queen song with no thunderbolts, AirPower may have to wait until the fall, GarageBand goes even more free, your phone is your car key, and there are Apple Pay fast lanes for you to zoom through. Nikkei predicts disaster but some analysts aren't buying it, Charles and Mike ponder the ongoing mystery of AirPlay 2 and the old AirPort Express as well as a pair of frivolous Apple Watch lawsuits, and this week sees the shortest Engineering Report ever! The big news of the week was of course Apple's update on the forthcoming Mac Pro, which is still coming but a bit less "forth" than many people thought. There was also a claim that Apple will be moving at least some of its Mac line over to ARM chips over the next few years -- that's Mike and Charles stifling a yawn you may be hearing right about now -- and some minor but notable news about the latest Intel chips in the pipeline, just for balance. With the latest Engineering report in our hands, we’ll be delving into some our favorite highlights of features coming in the near (or not-so-near) future. Then, after another round of Tweet Leaks, we’ll delve into a Foundry Mission that was honored with a mention during the Engineering Report. “Rise of Darkness” was played live before our Internet audience on Saturday, and we’ll share many of our thoughts on what the mission did well, or did not execute properly. This is the first of many Foundry missions that we plan to review, so listen close for details on how you can be involved with future reviews! And speaking of involving YOU… we’re also going to share some of your favorite TOS moments that we received recommendations for including in a Foundry mission.
