On July 12, 1979, Chicago's Comiskey Park erupted into chaos during what was supposed to be a quirky baseball promotion. Shock radio jock Steve Dahl's “Disco Demolition Night” incentivized listeners to bring disco records to a White Socks doubleheader, where, between games Dahl promised to blow them up in center field. Instead, the event descended into a riot, forcing the team to forfeit. On the surface, the incendiary event looked like a wild publicity stunt gone wrong — but in hindsight, it was tantamount to a book burning. In retrospect, the destruction of thousands of disco records was a symbolic rejection of the social meanings the sounds held, particularly for queer communities of color. The night marked not just the literal destruction of vinyl but a cultural turning point when disco's dazzling reign collapsed under backlash. Or did it? In this episode, we explore how a stadium stunt revealed the deeper racial, sexual, and generational tensions shaping American music at the dawn of the 1980s. In episode seven, host Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares talk with Gillian Frank is a historian of gender, sexuality, religion, and politics in the twentieth-century United States at Trinity College, Dublin. He is a managing editor of NOTCHES: (re)marks on the history of sexuality and co-host of the podcast Sexing History, which explores how the past shapes contemporary debates about sex. Frank's scholarship has appeared in leading academic journals and edited volumes, and he has held research fellowships at Princeton and other institutions. His current book project examines the history of child adoption and foster care in the U.S., tracing how religion, race, and politics shaped family formation in modern America. Welcome back to the Vikings Postgame Report presented by Lumen - The trusted network of A.I. The Minnesota Vikings fell 22-6 to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Falcons defense made it difficult for the Vikings offense throughout the game. Vikings Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for 158 yards and ran for another 25 yards on the ground but also had 2 interceptions. Running back Jordan Mason led the team with 30 yards rushing and Justin Jefferson had 3 receptions for 81 yards. Jefferson hit a milestone in the game, notching his 500th career reception in the 2nd Quarter. Will Reichard scored the only points for the Vikings, converting kicks from 33 and 51 yards, respectively. The Vikings defense continued to get pressure for the 3rd straight game as Linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. led the team with 9 tackles and Safety Theo Jackson had a fumble recovery on a nice punch out from Linebacker Eric Wilson. Linebacker Jonathan Greenard, Edge Rusher Dallas Turner, and Defensive Tackle Jalen Redmond all recorded sacks in the game. Paul Allen and Pete Bercich recap the game, including: the impact of injuries on the game, the need for the Vikings to continue to find their identity, and the pending matchup against the Bengals next Sunday afternoon. Plus, Head Coach Kevin O'Connell and Quarterback J.J. McCarthy's press conferences all are in this edition of the Vikings Postgame Report - presented by Lumen - The trusted network of A.I.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 6-0 win over the Astros to take the series in Toronto! They take your calls and texts, and they get right to Kevin Gausman, who turns in his second career complete game shutout on exactly 100 pitches, allowing just two hits and a walk over nine full innings. Is that the best start by any Blue Jays pitcher in 2025? They also discuss how the complete game helped out the bullpen going into a long stretch of games without a day off, the offence getting to Cristian Javier early, and the team's outlook over the remaining 16 games. Plus, we hear from John Schneider, Kevin Gausman, and Davis Schneider. They get into Chad Green's struggles late in the game - does that change how much the bullpen needs reinforcements? Plus, they get into Bo Bichette going five-for-five, and throw around some names that could help bolster the offensive performance as the trade deadline nears. Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 2-1 extra-innings win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park! They take your calls, and get right to Kevin Gausman's 10 Ks over eight innings of one-run ball - with most of the strikeouts coming off the fastball, is this a sustainable result if the splitter isn't splitting? They also get into Jeff Hoffman shutting it down in the ninth and tenth innings, and Nick Sandlin getting his first save as a Blue Jay - how important was it for the team to save their arms with a number of consecutive games ahead of them? The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
The Nats have now won three in a row after defeating the defending World Series champion Dodgers 6-4 on Monday night in Navy Yard. Mark & Al discuss MacKenzie Gore's solid outing where he only allowed a pair of runs in six innings of work. Those two LA runs came off of a Shohei Ohtani 2-run HR, part of his evening where he was a double shy from the cycle.(10:00) Kyle Finnegan not only got the save, but took care of the final five outs. He has recorded the final out in three consecutive days and in all likelihood will be unavailable on Tuesday.(17:10) James Wood homered for the first time this season to put Washington ahead 5-2. Wood was removed in the top of the 9th for defensive purposes by Jacob Young even though Wood was on deck if the Dodgers forced a bottom of the 9th.(22:10) Keibert Ruiz had a RBI double to extend the lead to 6-2. Ruiz's strong start to the season continues as his OPS is currently at .981.(25:00) There were more instances of runners getting thrown out on base and three Nats have been tagged out at home in the past two days. This has an ongoing issue over the past few seasons.(30:30) Brad Lord will start for the injury plagued pitching staff on Tuesday and Jackson Rutledge will likely come into relieve him. Lord was a starter in the minors and transitioned to a reliever during Spring Training. This is a chain reaction to Michael Soroka getting placed on the IL shortly after DJ Herz did as well.(36:20) Josh Whetzel, the Voice of the AAA-Rochester Red Wings, provides an update on Brady House, Robert Hassell III, Darren Baker, and more.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Craig Gent, north of England editor at Novara Media, to discuss his recent book Cyberboss: The Rise of Algorithmic Management and the New Struggle for Control at Work. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' CNN town hall, Trump-Harris polling, a new allegation of Trump's sexual assault (with a bonus of Epstein's involvement), Elon Musk's DOJ troubles, the owner of the LA Times' editorial issues, the Boeing machinist strike, Israel's devastation of Lebanon, foreign aid to Lebanon, Michigan AG Nessel's discriminatory crackdown on pro-Palestine protesters, and the CFPB, before diving a little deeper into Harris' better answers on CNN last night. Craig Gent then joins, diving right into the mass proliferation of AI and algorithmic practices, not as a replacement for physical or technical labor, but as a replacement for management, exploring how the traditional role of human managers of overseeing a workplace has been replaced with automated systems that employ everything from gamification to surveillance and punishment to keep production in line with neoliberal aims of endless growth. Expanding on this, Gent walks through how these systems serve to further atomize and isolate an already alienated workforce, creating a supposedly infallible system that dictates their every move and completely obfuscates the power dynamics at play, resulting in a working environment with little to no space for agency, dignity, or solidarity, before briefly touching on how workers are desperately seeking for any way to leverage agency in these workspaces. Craig also highlights the pressing need for unions to open up their awareness to the threat of this technology, not as a tool that COULD be used to exploit them, but as ones that were explicitly created TO exploit them, working to suppress and pull back the exploitative nature of these systems rather than attempting to “share” in the benefit of this exploitation. Emma also tackles Bill Ackman's defense of Trump's appreciation of Adolf Hitler. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Tucker Carlson bring fascism to the TP gooning party, unpack Harris' unchanging stance on Israel, and talk with Daniel from LA about LA's city council race between Jurado and De Leon. Doctor Dragon Rider has some qualms with the show and highlights his research into an interesting conspiracy around the dark money coming from Russia to the conservative mediasphere. Matt Walsh tackles the connection between babysitting and being the President of the United States, and today's crew unpacks the disgusting state of panic of the zionist movement as its imperialist hypocrisies come to the fore, plus, your calls and IMs!
