Braille Screen Input: What’s New in iOS and iPad OS 18? (Extra 77)

Braille Screen Input has been overhauled! iOS and iPad OS 18, released on Monday 16 September, include the biggest refresh of Braille Screen Input since the feature was first introduced in iOS 8. Although you can, for the most part, still use Braille Screen Input as you always have done, the new functionality in Apple's latest flagship operating systems is a source of much excitement throughout the blind community and will almost certainly take your Braille Screen Input experience to the next level. Join us in this episode as Matthew Horspool talks us through what's new. Summary of New Features New gestures for entering and exiting: double tap the far edges of the screen with two fingers to enter. To exit, pinch outwards or inwards, or perform a two finger scrub. BSI is also still available in the rotor and if this is enabled, the rotor gesture still works to exit, but it does not work if BSI is removed from the rotor. You can now braille a for sign. There are keyboard clicks and haptics during text entry, the same as those for the QWERTY on-screen keyboard. When searching for apps on the home screen, you can now use grade 2. You now have access to a Braille Item Chooser from within Braille Screen Input. It works in a similar way to searching for apps on the home screen, but functions within apps. You can now enter Braille Screen Input automatically when encountering a text field. Braille Screen Input now uses the Braille Table options in Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Braille to determine whether input is contracted, uncontracted etc. Swipe up with two fingers to change braille table. There is a new Command Mode, accessible via a three finger swipe left or right from within Braille Screen Input, or a tripple tap with two fingers at the far edges of the screen from elsewhere. Gestures in Command Mode are akin to braille display commands with the space bar held down, e.g. type the letter h in Command Mode to go to the home screen. You can also move the cursor and perform text selection with one finger and two finger swipe gestures. When using the Braille Item Chooser or searching for apps on the home screen using Braille Screen Input, you can opt to remain in Command Mode when swiping right with two fingers rather than exiting Braille Screen Input altogether. When in Command Mode, if the setting to enter Braille Screen Input when encountering a text box is enabled, VoiceOver will automatically switch from Command Mode to Braille Entry Mode when a text box is encountered. There are new sounds for entering and exiting Braille Screen Input, calibrating the dots and changing between Command Mode and Braille Entry Mode. There is now a setting to determine whether translated text appears on the screen whilst Braille Screen Input is active. All Braille Screen Input gesture assignments, plus the assignments for entering Braille Screen Input, can be customised. Braille Screen Input now supports Japanese braille. N.B. if the master toggle for VoiceOver sounds is switched off in Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Sounds and Haptics, the new Braille Screen Input sounds will not play. The Elusive Pursuit of Happiness in The Age of Excess

Lisa Carmen Wang

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2020 5:15

How to Be Happy in The Age of ExcessThere are an increasing number of “tactics” to be happy these days. We’re told to meditate, give gratitude, travel, be present, - the fact is, we’re told so many things that we should do, that we become even more overwhelmed with our already full to-do lists. And then, we begin to feel bad, because clearly we are not living a happy life if we can’t find even two minutes to meditate each day, much less the prescribed twenty. And we know we have to give gratitude, but it’s really hard to be grateful on days when you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, annoyed at your job, which you realize is a pouty thing to feel bad about because you know you’re lucky to have a decent or well-paying job. Traveling is awesome, you love exploring new places and cultures (but who doesn’t, really?) and the pictures prove it, you had a great time. Maybe you even posted a few pics on social media. ‘I swear it was the best time of my life’ the pictures yells. ‘I definitely didn’t spend a quarter of that time on my phone checking emails and scrolling through Instagram to make sure that people did, in fact, see and like my vacation pics.’And what does being present even mean these days? We can physically show up, we can do the dance of putting our phones away to have a conversation, then furtively checking it when the other person goes to the bathroom - can’t be seen alone with no incoming notifications to respond to. I mean, how lame would that be? Do you even have a life? Do people even like you? Each day, we wake up so consumed with the things we have to do, the things that we don’t have yet, the things that we think matter - that if you stopped to think about it… Do they really matter? - does that deadline, or that email, or that client really matter? I mean yea, it pays you - but how often do you feel joy, and I mean pure joy day-to-day when you open up your inbox and start mentally ticking off the people you have to respond to. What percentage of those people, if you never spoke to them ever again, would you actually miss?Happiness is a really convoluted concept these days. How can we be happy when there are so many other things we need to be doing? When there are so many other people who need our attention? We live in The Age of Excess.More specifically, Excess Choices - driven by a capitalistic societal belief that more is better. More is ALWAYS better. The next best thing is always around the corner - the next post, the next deal, the next show - “Entertain me,” we seem to be saying. “Occupy me,” “Feed me,” “Give me MORE.” The pursuit of more is stimulating, it’s exciting. It gives us that initial rush of dopamine. It also helps that other people admire us when we have more. But at a certain point, MORE starts feeling… well, a little too much. And suddenly we want less, but by that point, we don’t know how to wean ourselves off because we’re addicted to the pursuit of more, and less is inherently worse… right? If we cut things out, we might not like the few choices that we are left with. We might get bored. And boredom - lack of busyness - is really scary. What does it mean if we have nothing to do? What does it mean when our schedules are not packed back-to-back with opportunistic meetings? What do we do when we aren’t presented with superfluous choices to occupy our time? “Should I respond to this email or should I not respond to this email?” “iPhone X or XS or XS Max?” Making a conscious decision to give up certain choices entirely (i.e. it’s not about which Netflix show I should watch, but rather that I’ll just delete Netflix) means that you’ll actually have some space to be with yourself, your own thoughts, and eventually get to a point where you have to face the fundamental and hard choices in your life that have no immediate gratification or clear Google-able answer.Questions like:“What actually matters to me?”“Am I living in alignment with what matters to me?”“What do I do if I don’t even know what matters to me?”The answers to these questions not only require time, they also require TRUST… Trust that there’s something greater at work in the world that will take us to where we need to go if we actually create space to just listen and be. So it seems,The pursuit of happiness in The Age of Excess may very well lie in the abandonment of the pursuit in the first place. - Lisa Carmen WangResources:Applications now open for The GLOW Mastermind: Take action to finally launch your project or business venture. Hello Mosen at largers. Today we're talking in part about a subject I knew would come up sooner or later – bullying both online and off. If this topic raises upsetting issues for you, you need not go through this by yourself. Depending on the nature of the bullying, you may have legal redress, you certainly don't need to put up with it. Please seek appropriate assistance in your country. Bullying can happen to people who are even thought to be important or famous, and it can hurt you no matter who you are. We send love to everyone who has experienced this or is going through it, and especially Australian nine-year-old Quaden Bayles who is in the news this week.   Here's what's on the show.   Intro,0:00.000 "Listener comment, Amazon Echo having responsiveness issues",0:36.253 "Bullying, it's everywhere, including in the blind community",4:21.388 The WeWalk Smart Cane sounds really cool. Does the iPhone 11 perform better than an iPhone 10 XS Max and iPhone X when using WiFi 6? What about a PC upgraded to use WiFi 6? Is it worth it upgrading your network to WiFi 6 (802.11ax)? In this video I show you the performance of multiple devices - iPhone 11, iPhone XS Max, iPhone X, iPhone 7 and PC - when using a Netgear Nighthawk AX6000 RAX80 Router. Is wifi 6 better? I think so based on my tests. I am getting over 800 Mbps on a iPhone and over 900 Mbps with a PC. I think that is good performance! However, this is in a test environment - your results may vary depending on where you position the WiFi access point or router and what interference you encounter (thick walls, metal etc). You also need devices that support 802.11ax such as a Galaxy S10 or iPhone 11. Without Wi-fi 6 or 802.11ax support, you may not see much difference in your tests. ======================== Menu: ======================== Overview 0:01 Spoiler results: 2:41 Is is worth buying a wifi 6 router? 3:52 Technical content start: 4:40 Unboxing: 4:57 iPhone 11, XS Max, X, 7 Wifi 6 testing: 9:10 PC WiFi 6 network card testing: 12:58 ======================== Devices used: ======================== Netgear Router: https://amzn.to/2RzHwIB WiFi card: https://amzn.to/3aLpX01 Please note that links listed may be affiliate links and provide me with a small percentage/kickback should you use them to purchase any of the items listed or recommended. These stickers allow you to write text labels on them and having these labels read back to you by your smartphone. What is NFC? This is the acronym for near field communication. NFC tags are available for sale on different Web platforms like Amazon at a very low cost. Even if these tags are not considered as a specialized assistive product, this technology can help a lot of users who are living with a vision loss. Alexandre and Olivier will show you different apps available on iOS to read and write NFC tags. In order to use these apps, you need an iPhone 7 or higher. A demonstration on Android will also be made. At the end of the podcast, we will demonstrate the voice label feature only available on some Samsung smartphone allowing to associate an audio label to a tag that will be played as soon we tap the tag. You will also learn how it is possible to launch automations by simply taping your iPhone on an NFC tags with the Shortcuts app on iOS. However, please note that this feature requires an iPhone XS, XR, XS Max or later in order to work. Here is a list of the apps demonstrated in this podcast: NFC Tools for iOS NFC Tools for Android Simply NFC for iOS NFC TagInfo for iOS NFC Reader for iOS In addition, as a reminder, the Canadialog team can offer private or group training on request on the use of assistive technologies. On the show this week @erfon / @lkahney / @lewiswallace This week's story links First iPhone 11 Pro Max teardown shows off gigantic new battery One of the specs Apple refuses to reveal about the iPhone 11 Pro Max has been revealed by a teardown of this new model: it includes a 3,969 mAh battery, significantly larger than the one in the XS Max. That's hugely larger than the 3,174 mAh power cell in last year’s iPhone XS Max. And of course Apple is reporting the 11 Pro features 4 hours of extra battery life, while the iPhone 5 clock 5 extra hours. iPhone 11 Pro review roundup: Big battery, camera, display upgrades There’s no question about it: the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max are two of the best iPhones Apple has ever built — and arguably the best handsets in the world right now. Verge says it has the best camera in a phone. “[T]he iPhone 11 Pro cameras are an enormous improvement over the XS, and they beat the Pixel and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 Plus in most of our side-by-side comparisons. In fact, I think the iPhone 11 Pro is the best smartphone camera on the market right now.” Tom’s Guide loved the screen "iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display vastly outshined the Galaxy Note 10 Plus” What about speed you ask. Hold on to your butts. Wired had this to say: “The phones are fast. Downloading apps is fast. Switching between apps is fast. Processing and editing photos is fast. Apple Pay is faster on this phone; Face ID feels slightly faster. FaceID supports more face angles too “ iPhone 11 supposedly capable of two-way wireless charging One feature we expected but didn’t get from the iPhone 11 lineup is two-way wireless charging. But Apple could surprise us with it later. Two-way or bilateral wireless charging would allow you to charge certain devices — including other smartphones — by placing them down on the back of your iPhone. Tipster Sonny Dickson, citing “reliable sources,” reports that iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max do feature the hardware required for two-way wireless charging. It’s just that Apple hasn’t enabled it yet. "Reliable sources are saying iPhone 11 and 11 Pro do include the hardware for bilateral charging, but that it is software disabled. Uncertain whether this was removed prior to final production run.” It’s not clear why or when two-way wireless charging may have been deactivated. Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently suggested the “efficiency may not meet Apple’s requirements.” Bizarre that Apple would not have at least MENTIONED this feature and announced an anticipated release date. Apple Watch Series 5 has same CPU as Series 4 The insides of the Apple Watch Series 5 aren’t all that different from last year’s Series 4 upgrade. Other than the new always-on display, the only other internal changes Apple promoted were the new compass and increased storage. The latest build of Xcode reveals that those are basically the only changes, as the Series 5 uses the same CPU and GPU found in Apple Watch Series 4.

Only by Innovation - Richtig!

By Innovation only - Apple veranstaltet heute die wichtigste Keynote des Jahres. One more Apple TV?

We all have flashbulb moments. Events that had such an impact on our lives that we remember vividly where we were and what we were doing when we heard about them. I discuss some of my own and we hear some listener reflections.   After one of our listeners received a surprising visit from an accordion teacher she hadn't seen for 40 years, she dusts off the instrument and plays a little traditional Scottish music for us.   What are the benefits of eSIM, and how do you use it if you have an iPhone XS, XS Max or XR? I'll give you a quick demo.   We talk about using Google Assistant for iOS and how it's doing some pretty smart things to be useful even on the highly restricted iPhone.   The Twitter account of Twitter's CEO got hacked. What's up with that?   We talk more about the importance of our assistive technology being efficient, and how blindness OCR packages aren't meeting everyone's needs.   All this and much more on this week's Mosen At Large.

Kein so großes Thema: Neue VR-Software. Nichts Weltbewegendes eben. On Wednesday, Apple introduced not one but three new phone models to the world: the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr. They all seem fine. But take note of what Apple took away. As of this week, it no longer sells the iPhone SE. Which in turn means the age of small smartphones has officially come to an end. When Apple debuted the iPhone SE in 2016, it was remarkable not just for its diminutive 4-inch screen size, but for its amped-up capabilities even given those constraints.
