Rick Wilson, co-founder of The Lincoln Project and host of "The Enemies List" and "The Breakdown with Rick Wilson," talks to Joan Esposito. He will be at Chicago's City Winery Sunday, September 22nd with Molly Jong-Fast for "Politics As Unusual." (Learn more: https://citywinery.com/chicago/events/politics-as-unusual-bhy50l) In the interview Wilson talks about his history in politics, which began in 1988 when he worked for George H.W. Bush and subsequently got involved in a series of high-profile Republican campaigns. In 2015, "when Donald Trump came down that escalator," Wilson said, "whatever part of my soul had been inactive flipped over and I said, 'I can't do this anymore; I cannot be a part of what I can see is going to happen when this guy takes power." Wilson then authored the books "Everything Trump Touches Dies" and "Running Against The Devil," and, in 2019, founded The Lincoln Project. Wilson also talked about the experience of being "swatted," which he called a "pretty terrifying experience, and that's part of what has become a real part of the MAGA culture is threats, intimidation, that kind of belief that they can do anything to anyone who opposes Trump and that it's OK and that people like me should be threatened with violence. That's the downside of working at The Lincoln Project is you've got to have a pretty thick skin because bad people are going to say terrible things, they're going to threaten your family. And it takes somebody tough to do it but I'm really proud to help lead a team of people who are going to stand on the front line against Trump until the very end." Wilson also talked about Donald Trump's "mastery" of projection, "assertively anti-intellectual populism," George W. Bush's silence in the 2024 presidential campaign, the value of political endorsements, and Senator J.D. Vance's role as Donald Trump's "meme candidate" running mate. Wilson said he knew Vance when Vance was anti-Trump and believes that the "gods of ambition are [now] so strong in [him] that he can't make himself be a truthful and honorable man." Believe or not, this month's Booked Up Book Club is TUCKER, the book, the man, the walking grievance machine. It's true, Jen read Chadwick Moore's authorized biography of Tucker Carlson. And joining her are Rick Wilson and Martin Pengelly, to talk about it so you don't have to. Rick Wilson is a longtime Republican political strategist, award-winning ad-maker, and political commentator (and fifth generation Florida man). In 2015, Rick emerged as one of the earliest and most vocal critics of Donald Trump, helping found the Never Trump movement. His bestselling book EVERYTHING TRUMP TOUCHES DIES sprung from and perpetuated the acronym ETTD, used by millions on social media as a glib-schandenfraude-tinged response to each and every indictment or other misfortunte that befalls those who hitched their wagons to the Donald. Martin Pengelly is the Washington-based breaking news correspondent for the Guardian U.S. Born in Leeds, Martin played rugby for Durham University and Rosslyn Park FC and worked for Rugby News, the Guardian and the Independent before moving to the US in 2012. This has been a very very very very very bad week for Donald Trump … and Matt DePerno … and former Representative Daire Rendon … and the Michigan Republican Party. Spoiler alert: it's another week of our true-crime podcast. But for six state House Democrats who were targeted for recall It was a pretty good week with the state Board of Canvassers rejecting the proposed recall petitions (all of them ably represented by their lawyer, Mark Brewer!) The podcast was recorded minutes after Donald 'Jail-Adverse" Trump was arraigned for the third time this year on felony criminal charges. Joining the conversation as we mark a truly momentous moment in U.S. political history is longtime Trump critic Rick Wilson. A former member of the Republican Party, Rick has produced televised political commercials for governors, U.S. Senate candidates, Super PACs, and corporations. He left the Republican Party following the 2016 United States presidential election, and in late 2019 went on to co-found The Lincoln Project. In 2018, Rick released his first book, Everything Trump Touches Dies, in which he laments the re-alignment of the Republican Party behind Trump. The book reached number one on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. Wilson's second book, Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump – and Democrats from Themselves, was published in January 2020. He now hosts the podcast “Rick Wilson's The Enemies List.” =========================== This week's podcast is underwritten in part by EPIC-MRAEPIC ▪ MRA is a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management ===========================

What’s ahead for Republicans, Democracts, and Independents when it comes to civics in our country and communities? How can we work together when parties are often divided themselves? This February Civic Cocktail is the first of an intended multi-part, multi-party series. Join CityClub as they explore a few—certainly not all—of the varying viewpoints within the Republican Party with a discussion between the Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson and local Republican leader Bill Bryant, moderated by journalist Joni Balter. With the national election over, they explored some of the next steps for the Republican Party. After the departure of a one-term president who commanded a deeply loyal following among a large number, as well as challenged a number of others, the party is left without a clear, national standard bearer. Will the Republicans maintain a cohesive theme to unite the disparate perspectives within their ranks nationally? What is the local impact and future of the Party here in Washington? Join CityClub for this conversation to get some insight. As a 40-year-old nonpartisan, civics-focused nonprofit, Seattle CityClub provides a platform for insightful and educational conversations that include a diverse range of opinions. But sometimes we need to dive deeper into a particular topic, so we can listen and engage in a more thoughtful manner with our community. Rick Wilson is a Republican political strategist, negative ad-maker, writer, speaker, and political commentator. Under President Reagan, he was appointed as a trade policy coordinator at the Department of Commerce International Trade Commission. He organized the presidential campaign for Vice President Bush in Washington, and was co-chair for the Dole for President finance committee in Washington. Last Sunday the venerable NY Times got it all wrong. They said, and I’m quoting, “On the Democratic side, an essential debate is underway between two visions that may define the future of the party and perhaps the nation.” Not so. The only thing that will really define the future of either party and of the nation is the defeat of Donald Trump. And anything that stops short of focusing on that and that alone is a failure of imagination. The times went on to say, and again I’m quoting, “with a crowded field and with traditional polling in tatters, that calculation calls for a hefty dose of humility about anyone’s ability to foretell what voters want.” Wrong again. Focus groups, polling, and campaigns still matter. They matter not just in “the election,” but in the elections in the states that will actually shape the outcome of that election. It’s not a mystery. The methods today may be more modern, but campaigns for candidates, not unlike advertising for a product, if a done right, will work! And that, not some vague nuances of policy is the only thing that will defeat Trump. To try and explain and reinforce these ideas I’m joined by. Rick Wilson the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Everything Trump Touches Dies and most recently Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump--and Democrats from Themselves My conversation with Rick Wilson:

This week, the one and only Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) stopped by to talk with Ana (@anamariecox) about his new book, Everything Trump Touches Dies. Ana kicked things off by asking Rick about things he regrets from his past as a political consultant. That led to a conversation about the reaction he’s received from past colleagues and clients to the book, and why he decided to move from working in the political shadows to the light. After Ana called Rick out for the way he uses mental illness and drug addiction in the book to mock Trump supporters, they discussed the people that have disappointed Rick in the Trump era. At the top of the list: Rudy Giuliani. Afterwards, friend of the pod Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) joined Ana to answer a listener question from Alex, a Spanish teacher at a conservative, largely homogenous school who wants to reach her students and help them learn that discrimination isn’t ok. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan's decision not to seek re-election in 2018 has created a whole new set of issues for Republicans heading into the 2018 midterms. Pundits and politicians are already discussing Ryan’s possible successors and the internal struggle the party faces and will continue to face. Rick Wilson, a Republican consultant, Daily Beast columnist and author of the upcoming book “Everything Trump Touches Dies”, explains his recent column “Donald Trump Takes Out Paul Ryan, and ‘It’s Going to Be a Civil War’”. Wilson joins Michael Steele and Rick Ungar to discuss what impact he thinks Ryan departure will have on the House and why he thinks the GOP is in for a reckoning come November. President Trump signaled Thursday that he may want the U.S. to rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership, something that would reverse one of his first acts in the office. The guys give their take on the president's most recent policy reversal.
Rick Wilson is a Republican political strategist and media consultant with 30 years of experience. He has helped to elect Governors, U.S. Senators, statewide Cabinet officers and state legislators. He is also a vehement critic of the 45th President of the United States and is working on a film project titled ‘Everything Trump Touches Dies.’ In October 2017, at the fifth annual Uncharted Berkeley Festival of Ideas, produced by independent news site Berkeleyside, Wilson talked with media innovator Peter Leyden about his views on the present-day Republican party, how he has received death threats for his views on Trump, and what he thinks the future may hold.
