In this powerful episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, Patrick and Steffany take a deep dive into a topic that touches every aspect of our daily lives: the ego. Titled Partner With Your Ego, this conversation explores what it really means to stop battling your ego and instead learn how to understand it, work with it and grow through it. Patrick opens by reframing the ego as neither friend nor enemy but as a lifelong companion. Together, they explore insights from leading thinkers like Eckhart Tolle, Dr. Gabor Maté, Michael Singer, Carl Jung, Richard Rohr and Brené Brown. Each expert offers a fresh lens: Tolle reminds us the ego clings to false identities and craves being right, while Maté reframes the ego as a protective child shaped by early environments. Singer calls the ego our restless inner narrator, Jung invites us to integrate our shadow selves and Rohr highlights the masks we wear to seek approval and control. Patrick and Steffany unpack how our need to be right, loved or in control often reveals hidden fears and old wounds. They challenge listeners to ask what their ego is still protecting and how old patterns may be blocking deeper connections, success and peace of mind. Steffany shares how small moments of self-awareness - noticing when we defend ourselves, seek control or put on masks - can create profound shifts. They urge listeners to question their identity, drop the armor and stand firm in their authentic values. If you're ready to shift from fighting your ego to partnering with it for growth, clarity and real connection, this episode delivers wisdom, laughter and practical tools to help you show up as your truest self.

In this powerful episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany unpack a foundational truth: true health, authentic freedom, and purposeful living all begin within. The conversation starts with a compelling insight: “You don't need to find your purpose—you need to clear the noise so it can find you.” Clarity, they argue, isn't about trying harder—it's about removing what's in the way. Drawing from personal experience and coaching conversations, Patrick and Steffany explore how hidden beliefs like “I'm not enough” or “I'm not worthy” silently shape our behaviours, decisions, and ultimately, our sense of self-worth. The episode dives deep into the seven dimensions of holistic health—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, vocational, financial, and social—and how imbalance in any area can obstruct our ability to live fully aligned. Listeners are invited to reflect on which “buckets” in their life are running low and how ignoring these areas can lead to dissatisfaction, confusion, and even the illusion of purpose that's really just distraction. Freedom, the duo explains, isn't just financial. True freedom is liberation from internal constraints—our fears, ego-driven stories, and limiting beliefs. They emphasize that many chase purpose externally, when in reality, purpose emerges when we align with our values, clear our minds (the “Mind Shui” method), and reconnect with what truly matters. This episode is a heartfelt invitation to ask different questions, to pause, to become aware, and to courageously sit with yourself—even in silence. Because ultimately, your purpose isn't out there—it's in you, waiting for space to unfold.

Small Shifts, Big Change – Mindset Matters Podcast Ep. 191 In this episode, hosts Patrick and Steffany unpack the power of Kaizen—the Japanese philosophy of continuous, incremental improvement—showing how “small shifts create big changes.” Framed by Patrick's concept of “Mind Shui” (feng shui for the mind) and Steffany's 25-year “Quantum Speed” training method, they demonstrate that the tiniest tweak in perception or technique can re-route our entire trajectory, whether in athletics, business, parenting, or personal growth. Key talking points Kaizen Basics: Kai = change, Zen = good. Continuous, “change-good” thinking rewires habits without the burnout of dramatic overhauls. Quantum Paradox: In physics a quantum is the smallest measurable unit, yet “quantum leap” in popular language signals a giant jump. The hosts bridge that paradox: micro-adjustments (e.g., a skater's hip angle, an investor's 30-minute morning routine) compound into macro results. Flight Analogy: – Like a pilot subtly correcting course from Vancouver to Toronto, we must make real-time mindset adjustments to reach long-term goals. Economic & Performance Cycles: Boom-and-slump markets, Olympic quadrennials, and even garden seasons all reward those who respect timing, plant seeds early, and stay agile. Self-Talk Audit: Replacing negative inner dialogue with conscious awareness is a low-effort, high-impact tweak—“clarity equals velocity.” Champions' Paradox: High performers thrive by slowing down to speed up, prioritizing technique, rest, and reflection over constant hustle. Patrick and Steffany close by reminding listeners that most of us aren't yet “doing the best we can—we're doing the best we know how.” The invitation: choose one tiny, repeatable action today—wake up 30 minutes earlier, change your drive route, cut 10 minutes of doom-scrolling—and watch your personal and professional results compound exponentially.
In this Father's Day-adjacent episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, hosts Patrick and Steffany tackle a provocative parenting truth: even with the best intentions, we inevitably program our children with the same hidden beliefs we spend adulthood trying to break. Drawing on decades of coaching thousands of young athletes and entrepreneurs, they explore how over-protection, “helicopter” habits and constant rescuing can stunt a child's resilience, self-worth and ability to navigate adversity. Key discussion points include: Limiting Beliefs & Mindset Feng Shui – Why phrases like “money doesn't grow on trees” or “if it wasn't for bad luck…” hard-wire scarcity and victim mentalities that linger into adulthood. Adversity as a Crucible for Growth – From Patrick's playground bullying story to Steffany's childhood swim lesson, the hosts show how momentary struggle forges confidence and problem-solving skills. Parent vs. Best Friend – The cost of prioritising perpetual comfort over boundaries, team dynamics and real-world consequences. Role-Model Mechanics – Sons learn how to treat women from how mothers set boundaries; daughters often choose partners mirroring (or intentionally opposing) dad's behaviour. Mentorship & Community – Why seeking outside role-models can offset a parent's blind spots and expand a child's 400,000 in-born traits. You'll leave with actionable reflection questions: Where might you be shielding your kids from healthy discomfort? Which subconscious scripts from your own upbringing still shape daily decisions? And most importantly, what new boundaries or growth opportunities can you introduce so your children build the resilience, values and mindset to thrive without you? Perfect for dads, mums, coaches and anyone interested in mindset coaching, personal development, parenting tips, resilience training and self-limiting belief breakthroughs, this conversation offers both heartfelt stories and practical wisdom.
In this week's Mindset Matters episode, “It's a Gift,” hosts Patrick Francey and Steffany-Hanlen Francey unpack why the present moment is the single most powerful asset in your personal-growth toolkit. If you've ever found yourself replaying past traumas or fast-forwarding into anxious worst-case scenarios, this conversation will recalibrate your focus to right now—where clarity, creativity, and momentum truly live. Patrick opens by challenging the myth that the future is where life happens, reminding listeners that the only place we can actually create that future is the present. Together, the couple explores how mental clutter—outdated belief systems, ego-driven self-talk, and digital distractions—steals attention span and fuels anxiety. Drawing on Patrick's early-morning journaling practice and Steffany's high-performance coaching with elite athletes, they share practical mind-shui tactics for clearing internal noise: intentional breathing, silent reflection, gratitude writing, and single-task listening. A touching story about the passing of Patrick's 97-year-old mother illustrates the profound peace that comes from being fully present for life's most meaningful moments. Key takeaways: • Clarity equals velocity — stripping away mental clutter accelerates decision-making and personal growth. • Attention is currency — checking your phone mid-conversation costs rapport and undermines self-awareness. • Ego wants to be right; consciousness wants to be real — question looping narratives that keep you stuck. • The fastest remedy for anxiety is asking, “What problem do I have right now?”—not tomorrow, not next week. • High-performance presence is trainable — micro-moments of stillness strengthen resilience, listening skills, and emotional connection. Tune in to discover how reclaiming your moment-to-moment awareness can transform relationships, business results, and overall well-being. Subscribe to Mindset Matters for weekly conversations on mindset, resilience, and authentic success—and let Patrick and Steffany guide you toward becoming the best version of yourself, one present breath at a time. With so much information available, it's easy to get educated on an asset class or an opportunity before investing. Although there's no substitute for hands-on experience, you can still reduce risk through education. Steffany Boldrini, Principal at Monte Carlo Real Estate Investments, invested in car washes in North Texas and learned the hard way that she didn't know what she didn't know. Six years later, Steffany is recouping her investment, but wishes she would have learned more about the asset class before jumping in. More recently, Steffany has invested in a 19 unit condo conversion in Dallas and a ground-up Self Storage development in Stockton, CA.

In this compelling episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany explore a powerful concept: the Region Beta Paradox—a psychological phenomenon that explains why we often stay stuck in mediocre situations simply because they're “not that bad.” Whether it's an unfulfilling job, a stagnant relationship, or a comfort zone that's become a cage, the paradox reveals how moderate discomfort can be more dangerous than real adversity—because it fails to trigger change. Patrick shares personal stories, including his own “entrepreneurial accident” in the 1980s, which forced him out of complacency and into a path of purpose and growth. Steffany reflects on receiving the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee's Coach of the Year award and the grounding realization that even recognition doesn't remove life's everyday responsibilities. Together, they unpack how comfort can quietly stall ambition, and why doing the hard part first often leads to greater clarity, resilience, and results. The conversation dives deep into themes of self-responsibility, delayed gratification (with a nod to the famous “Marshmallow Test”), and the neuroscience of getting uncomfortable. They explain how growth requires challenge, not ease—and how embracing discomfort rewires the brain and strengthens personal integrity. Whether you're navigating life, career, or a mindset shift, this episode is a wake-up call to examine where you might be settling for “okay” instead of pushing for extraordinary. This is the essence of the MindShui Way—decluttering the mind, increasing self-awareness, and choosing a life of purpose over comfort.
In this powerful and relatable episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany explore the true nature of confidence through the lens of a compelling parable about a young boy named Eli who builds a bridge—despite the doubts of others and his own inexperience. The story becomes the foundation for a meaningful discussion about self-trust, belief, and the myth that confidence is something we have to feel before we take action. They break down confidence into three key types: self-confidence, social confidence, and confidence in others. What emerges is a game-changing insight—confidence isn't something you wait for. It's something you build, plank by plank, failure by failure, just like Eli. Confidence, they argue, is rooted in self-trust, discipline, and commitment, not a fleeting emotional state. Whether you're struggling with imposter syndrome, fear of failure, or social anxiety, this conversation invites you to shift your perspective. Instead of seeing confidence as a prerequisite for action, see it as the result of consistent effort, learning, and resilience. From parenting insights to leadership lessons and personal growth strategies, this episode is filled with real-world wisdom—highlighting how borrowing belief from others, owning your past failures, and facing discomfort are all part of building authentic confidence.
In this episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive deep into the internal prison so many of us live in: the fear of other people's opinions. They explore how this mindset quietly limits our decisions, confidence, and potential, and they challenge listeners to reflect on the emotional and mental cost of constantly seeking validation. At the heart of the discussion is the powerful quote: “You must develop the ability to be disliked in order to free yourself from the prison of other people's opinions.” Patrick expands on this, pointing out that the real prison isn't others' opinions—it's our belief in them. It's the internal story we tell ourselves about what others might think, and the choices we don't make as a result. Steffany opens up about her own journey—especially as a woman in male-dominated spaces like professional sports—and how letting go of being liked was critical to her growth. They discuss the courage it takes to be misunderstood, and how honoring your values often means standing alone, but standing strong. Patrick also shares the story of Shaka Senghor, who physically lived in prison for 19 years, but whose real transformation began when he broke free of the prison in his mind by rewriting his life's narrative. This episode is a powerful reminder that success and personal freedom begin with inner truth—not external approval. Key Topics Covered: Limiting beliefs and internal constraints Courage to be disliked and misunderstood Authenticity in the face of judgment The difference between external and internal freedom Creating a legacy from values, not validation
In this insightful and down-to-earth episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive deep into the concept of grounding—what it truly means, why it's essential, and how to consciously apply it in everyday situations. Whether you're stepping onto a stage, heading into a difficult conversation, or simply feeling emotionally overwhelmed, grounding can be the missing link to clarity, confidence, and calm. Patrick opens by reflecting on the electrical principle of grounding as a metaphor for emotional and energetic stability. Just like a home needs a ground wire to safely direct energy, we too need grounding to manage stress and stay centered under pressure. Together, they explore the physical and emotional benefits of grounding—such as improved sleep, reduced inflammation, and enhanced resilience—and even share personal anecdotes, including Steffany's unforgettable brush with lightning during a camping trip, where rubber boots may have saved her life. The duo also touch on self-worth, imposter syndrome, and how deeply-rooted limiting beliefs like “I'm not worthy” can hold us back. Steffany shares her recent experience winning a prestigious award from the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee and how old beliefs tried to convince her she didn't deserve it. The conversation becomes a candid exploration of how we react to judgment—whether from others or from ourselves—and how getting grounded can help us respond with intention instead. By the end of the episode, listeners are left with a compelling reminder: grounding is not just a tool for managing energy—it's a gateway to emotional freedom, personal alignment, and empowered action.
In episode 183 of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive into a powerful and eye-opening conversation about the unconscious beliefs that hold people back from living their most authentic, empowered lives. Drawing from Patrick's recent presentation with Alfonso Cuadra at a real estate and personal development event, they explore “The 11 Hidden Beliefs That Keep You Stuck.” These deep-seated narratives often operate silently in the background of our minds, shaping our behaviours, decisions, and self-worth without us even realizing it. Patrick begins by unpacking the first few limiting beliefs—“I'm not enough,” “I'm not worthy,” and “I'm not loved”—explaining how these subconscious programs can silently govern our actions. These beliefs often stem from seemingly innocent childhood experiences, parental comments, or emotional wounds, and evolve into inner constraints that manifest as overachievement, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or playing small. The episode also addresses beliefs such as “I don't matter,” “I'm not safe,” “I'm powerless,” and “There's something wrong with me,” demonstrating how each one erodes confidence and self-expression. Patrick and Steffany highlight how these inner scripts impact not just goal achievement, but emotional freedom, joy, and meaningful connection. A key takeaway? Awareness is the first step to transformation. Once these hidden beliefs are identified, they can be challenged, reprogrammed, and dissolved. Patrick encourages listeners to upgrade their “mental software” by paying attention to their emotional triggers, self-talk, and recurring patterns. The conversation is candid, relatable, and packed with real-life stories, humour, and deep insight. It's an invitation to uncover what's really been holding you back—and to finally feel free enough to move forward.
In this reflective and energizing episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany share insights from a transformative retreat in Sedona, Arizona, where they hit pause on the noise of life to reconnect, recharge, and reset. Immersed in nature and guided coaching, their time away became a powerful reminder of the importance of creating sacred space—for clarity, creativity, and connection. The episode explores how stepping outside our day-to-day grind allows us to re-evaluate where we're operating on autopilot. The couple discusses the deep work they did as individuals and as partners, highlighting how we all benefit from moments of grounding, intentional presence, and time to “replug.” From journaling and meditation to desert hikes and labyrinth walks, their experience reaffirmed a powerful truth: we must lead ourselves before we can lead others. One of the standout takeaways is Patrick's concept of Mind Shui—a term he coined to describe the intentional reorganization of mental space, much like Feng Shui aligns physical space. Mind Shui is about removing internal clutter—old beliefs, emotional baggage, unprocessed thoughts—so that energy can flow clearly across all seven areas of life. The clearer the mind, the faster the momentum. They also touch on economic uncertainties, generational divides, and the importance of keeping perspective during turbulent times. At the core of it all is this message: when the world feels chaotic, come back to what you can control—your mindset, your energy, your environment.
In this thought-provoking episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany Francey dive deep into the metaphor of “the banana” — the limiting beliefs, old identities, emotional baggage, and outdated stories we cling to that keep us stuck and prevent growth. Using the story of how hunters trap monkeys with bananas, Patrick explores how our grip on the past, much like the monkey's grip on the fruit, often becomes our own trap. Whether it's a past trauma, a title or role we once held, or a belief that we're not enough, these “bananas” shape our decisions and hold us back from living authentically and powerfully. Steffany shares powerful insights about identity, forgiveness, and the hidden resistance to moving forward. Her recent personal experience—winning a prestigious, unexpected award—illustrates how even recognition can bring up questions of worth and identity. Together, they explore how people often stay stuck in comfort or familiarity rather than face the discomfort of the unknown, and how clinging to the past can prevent us from fully stepping into our potential. This episode is rich with real-life examples, humor, and heartfelt dialogue as Patrick and Steffany challenge listeners to reflect on what they might be holding onto—and encourage them to let go with compassion and awareness. With key themes of personal growth, resilience, self-awareness, and emotional freedom, this episode inspires you to identify your own “banana,” loosen your grip, and create space for new possibilities.

In this powerful and deeply personal episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, hosts Patrick and Steffany Francey dive into a universal and often unconscious belief that holds so many people back: “I'm not enough.” Whether it's not smart enough, not successful enough, not attractive enough, or just not worthy, this pervasive inner dialogue can quietly sabotage your confidence, relationships, and personal growth. Patrick and Steffany explore where this damaging mindset originates—often rooted in childhood experiences, comparisons, and societal pressures—and how it continues to shape our choices and identities. Through authentic conversation, they reveal how high achievers, athletes, and professionals frequently operate from a place of not-enoughness, overcompensating through performance or perfectionism, only to still feel unfulfilled. This episode features compelling insights, powerful coaching perspectives, and two emotional parables—the story of the cracked pot and the eagle raised as a chicken—that illustrate how our environments, inner narratives, and self-talk influence whether we soar or stay stuck. Steffany shares reflections from the world of elite figure skating, where even the most talented athletes can falter under the weight of proving their worth. Patrick adds stories from his own experiences and clients, reinforcing the truth that real transformation begins with awareness and the courage to challenge limiting beliefs. If you've ever questioned your value or found yourself striving for external validation, this episode is a must-listen. It's a wake-up call and a reminder: You are enough—right now, just as you are.
In this powerful episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany Francey dive deep into the deceptive allure of the comfort zone and explore how it might be quietly crushing your dreams. Together, they unpack the emotional and psychological patterns that keep us stuck in safe, familiar spaces—at the cost of real growth and personal fulfillment. Using the vivid parable of the lobster—who must shed its shell to grow—Patrick draws a compelling parallel: just like the lobster, we only truly grow when we embrace discomfort. That discomfort might look like starting a business, having a tough conversation, facing rejection, or simply pushing beyond what's familiar. Steffany shares real-life coaching insights from high-performance athletes preparing for world championships, emphasizing how discomfort isn't something to avoid—but rather a necessary state that sharpens focus, fuels creativity, and unlocks peak performance. Together, they reflect on personal stories of navigating change, shedding old identities, and the emotional cost of clinging to comfort when it no longer serves us. This episode challenges listeners to examine where in their life they've settled—relationships, health, business, or personal development—and offers inspiring reminders that discomfort is not only natural but essential for growth. Whether you're an entrepreneur, athlete, leader, or someone craving change, this episode will resonate deeply. Packed with raw reflections, laughter, and honest moments, Patrick and Steffany invite you to ask the hard question: Are you fighting to stay comfortable… or fighting to grow? In this thought-provoking episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany take a deep dive into the concept of ego—its role in our lives, relationships, and personal growth. Inspired by Ryan Holiday's Ego is the Enemy, they challenge the notion that ego is something to be eliminated, instead framing it as both a protector and a potential roadblock. Through engaging metaphors and real-life experiences, Patrick and Steffany compare ego to a suit of armor—offering protection when needed but also risking isolation if never removed. They discuss how ego influences our self-identity, drives ambition, and at times, holds us back through fear, comparison, and the need for validation. Key insights from this episode include: ✅ How ego can fuel resilience and confidence—but also limit personal growth. ✅ The difference between healthy self-esteem (which seeks truth) and ego (which seeks validation). ✅ Why the most effective leaders have a flexible ego—assertive yet open to feedback. ✅ The impact of ego in business, sports, and personal relationships. ✅ How to recognize when your ego is serving you—or keeping you small. Patrick shares his personal experience of stepping into new leadership roles, confronting discomfort, and overcoming ego-driven doubts. Steffany explores the challenge of detaching from relationships that no longer align, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness in navigating growth and change. This episode will leave you reflecting on the question: Is your ego working for you, or against you? Tune in for actionable strategies to harness your ego's power and transform it into a tool for success.
In this thought-provoking episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany Hanlen Francey take a deep dive into the meaning of integrity—one of the most frequently cited core values, yet often misunderstood. They challenge listeners to redefine integrity, moving beyond societal judgments and external expectations to a deeply personal standard: Are you living in alignment with your own values? The discussion opens with a powerful observation: integrity often appears on people's top values list, yet many operate outside of it—consciously or unconsciously. Patrick and Steffany break down the idea that integrity isn't about how others perceive you but rather how truthful you are with yourself. They explore real-life examples of how misalignment with one's values can manifest in stress, anxiety, and dissatisfaction, whether in personal relationships, career choices, or even everyday habits. Using the concept of structural integrity, they draw a parallel between maintaining a solid foundation in architecture and staying true to one's internal framework. Just as a bridge collapses when its integrity is compromised, so too does personal well-being when one's actions contradict their core beliefs. The hosts also examine the role of societal and professional pressures that push individuals to make choices misaligned with their values—such as career decisions made out of financial necessity rather than passion and authenticity. This episode also delves into the nuanced challenges of integrity in modern workplaces, particularly within the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Patrick and Steffany offer insights into the emotional and ethical dilemmas that arise when individuals feel forced to compromise their values to fit external frameworks. Through engaging storytelling and real-life scenarios—including the inspiring story of a golfer who upheld integrity at great financial cost—this episode encourages listeners to take a personal integrity check. Patrick and Steffany emphasize that while making integrity-driven choices can be difficult and even lonely at times, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-term discomfort. Tune in to Mindset Matters for an eye-opening conversation that challenges you to reflect on your own values, question societal definitions of integrity, and take ownership of living in alignment with who you truly are.
In this enlightening episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, hosts Patrick and Steffany dive deep into the transformative power of frustration. They reveal that frustration isn't merely a negative emotion—it's a powerful feedback mechanism signaling unmet expectations and misaligned values. According to the conversation, frustration often arises when our internal expectations, whether about ourselves or others, go unfulfilled. This physiological response, they explain, is a crucial cue that something needs attention and adjustment. Patrick and Steffany explore how both personal and interpersonal frustrations are rooted in our assumptions and unspoken expectations. They highlight that when we become frustrated—whether it's due to a partner's differing values, a slow learning curve, or even larger societal issues like political decisions—it is often a call to examine what we truly need. Instead of letting frustration evolve into anger, the hosts suggest taking a moment to pause and ask, “What do I need that I'm not getting?” This introspection helps shift the focus from blaming external factors to owning our emotional responses. With a blend of humor and real-life anecdotes, the conversation touches on topics ranging from relationship dynamics to the challenges of personal growth. They discuss how our frustration in everyday interactions—like those fueled by small talk or miscommunication—can serve as a stepping stone toward better communication and self-improvement. The episode also delves into the idea that, in a world full of unmet expectations, embracing and processing frustration is essential for building resilience and fostering a growth mindset. Ultimately, Patrick and Steffany empower listeners to reframe frustration as a constructive force. By acknowledging and addressing the unmet needs behind their frustration, individuals can pave the way for enhanced self-awareness, improved relationships, and lasting personal growth. Tune in to discover practical coaching tips and insights that will help you transform frustration into an opportunity for change.
In this episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive deep into the psychology of meaning and how our present influences both our past and future. Drawing on insights from renowned psychologists Dr. Roy Baumeister and Dr. Kathleen Vohs, they explore the idea that present events derive meaning from their connection to future outcomes. The conversation touches on the growing disconnection in society and how an uncertain future impacts our sense of purpose. With rising rates of depression, suicide, and social isolation, many people are struggling to find meaning in a world that feels increasingly divided. Patrick and Steffany examine the shift from community-based happiness to individual pleasure-seeking and its effect on overall well-being. They also discuss the impact of global and personal tragedies, including the recent loss in the figure skating community, and how grief is deeply tied to meaning. Steffany shares her perspective on grief as "stuck love" and emphasizes the importance of processing emotions, reconnecting with purpose, and moving forward with intention. In a time of rapid change, the couple highlights the necessity of cultivating hope, building community, and embracing conversations that inspire growth. Patrick also shares his excitement about his new role with McKay CEO Forums, a platform dedicated to fostering meaningful connections among business leaders. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to navigate uncertainty, reclaim their sense of purpose, and build a meaningful future despite life's challenges.
In this episode, Patrick and Steffany explore a thought-provoking question: Are we truly happy, or are we just chasing pleasure? While many people confuse the two, they explain how happiness is an internal, long-term state, while pleasure is a short-lived external high that can leave us feeling empty once it fades. Patrick and Steffany discuss how modern society—especially social media—has amplified the addiction to pleasure through instant gratification. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok provide constant dopamine hits, often tricking us into believing we're happy when, in reality, we're just on an emotional rollercoaster. They highlight the science behind it: pleasure is fueled by dopamine, while true happiness comes from serotonin. Ironically, excessive dopamine suppresses serotonin, making lasting happiness harder to attain. Through personal reflections and real-world examples, they unpack how many of us unconsciously seek pleasure in shopping, binge-watching, or even the pursuit of external validation. They also touch on how industries—like social media, gambling, and even retail—are designed to keep us hooked on pleasure. Steffany shares insights from working with athletes, noting how social media "fasts" help competitors stay present and avoid the distractions of external validation. The episode also explores the importance of purpose, relationships, and self-awareness in cultivating happiness. The key takeaway? Pleasure is easy, but happiness is earned. By prioritizing deep connections, personal growth, and meaningful contributions, we can shift from seeking fleeting pleasure to cultivating lasting happiness. Tune in for a powerful conversation that challenges us to reflect on what truly makes us happy.

In this episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive into the loaded concept of fairness. They unpack how “fair” is often used in political, business, and personal conversations, yet its meaning is highly subjective. Patrick kicks off the discussion with a provocative example: a financial agreement where one party lends money at an agreed interest rate, only to later feel shortchanged when the borrower makes a significant profit. The scenario highlights how fairness can shift depending on perspective, emotions, and unforeseen outcomes. The hosts explore the distinction between fairness, evenness, and merit. Steffany points out how fairness is often misinterpreted, such as in sports when coaches say they will distribute ice time fairly—but not necessarily equally. Similarly, in society, politicians use the word to push an agenda, but are they really advocating fairness or simply playing with language to appeal to emotions? They also touch on how fairness—or the lack of it—creates victim mentalities. If fairness is a core value, then feeling deprived or overlooked can be a frequent and frustrating experience. Instead, Steffany suggests shifting the focus from fairness to possibility, embracing personal responsibility rather than waiting for an even playing field. The episode ties fairness back to relationships, work, and personal growth, urging listeners to examine where they feel things are “unfair” and whether assumptions, miscommunications, or unspoken expectations are at play. Ultimately, Patrick and Steffany challenge listeners to redefine fairness for themselves and recognize how it shapes their mindset, decisions, and sense of fulfillment. Is life truly fair? Or is it about agreements, perception, and perspective? Tune in and decide for yourself.

In this heartfelt episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany Francey dive deep into the themes of trust, forgiveness, and self-responsibility. Opening with the timeless quote, “To err is human, to forgive divine,” they explore what it means to forgive when trust has been broken and how to rebuild relationships through the art of healing. Patrick shares a powerful parable of a master who mends a broken clay pot with golden resin, symbolizing how forgiveness is the glue that binds us together when trust shatters. This concept aligns with the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where cracks in pottery are repaired with gold, creating something more beautiful and meaningful than before. Through this lens, Patrick and Steffany discuss how the scars of broken trust can carry valuable lessons while still leaving their mark. The conversation touches on the nuances of trust—whether broken intentionally, unintentionally, or due to misunderstandings. Steffany introduces the "Assumption of Trust," an exercise that challenges listeners to examine their own trustworthiness and values. They reflect on real-life scenarios, from personal relationships to business dynamics, emphasizing the need for clear communication and self-awareness to prevent misunderstandings and unmet expectations. Forgiveness, they argue, is not about forgetting or excusing harm but about releasing the emotional weight we carry. Through poignant anecdotes, including stories of parents forgiving unimaginable losses, they underscore the importance of forgiveness as a gift we give ourselves to reclaim peace and healing. The episode closes with a reminder: forgiveness begins within. Whether seeking it for others or granting it to ourselves, letting go of resentment is essential for emotional freedom and well-being. Trust and forgiveness are not just actions—they are ongoing practices rooted in our values and choices.
In this engaging episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany explore the profound connection between language, resilience, and personal growth. The conversation begins with the intriguing word "abracadabra," which they reveal is derived from Hebrew, meaning "as I speak, so I create." This sparks a thoughtful dialogue on how words shape our reality, serve as our "wardrobe" to the world, and influence the outcomes we manifest. The hosts shift focus to the theme of resilience—a critical quality for thriving amidst life's challenges. Steffany shares her expertise in emotional resilience, distinguishing it from mental toughness, and emphasizes its application across various areas of life, including physical, relational, financial, and spiritual domains. Patrick highlights the importance of adaptability, self-awareness, purpose, and a strong support system as foundational elements of resilience. The duo dives deeper into how adversity plays a vital role in building empathy and compassion. They discuss how a lack of early challenges can hinder emotional growth and contrast it with the profound lessons learned through overcoming hardships. Steffany shares insights from her coaching experience, including her method of "manufacturing adversity" to prepare athletes for real-world challenges. The episode also touches on resilience in community settings, referencing recent wildfires in California. The discussion underscores the importance of leaning on support systems and the courage it takes to ask for help during trying times. The hosts advocate for embracing adversity as a muscle that needs training, much like physical fitness, to foster emotional strength and self-reliance. Ending on a positive note, Steffany reminds listeners to prepare for the worst, expect the best, and always leave room for magic. This episode is a powerful reminder that resilience, like the magic of words, can transform lives when nurtured with intention and purpose.
In this engaging episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany dive deep into the essence of progress and its connection to happiness, fulfillment, and purpose. They kick things off with a candid moment, reflecting on how even small conflicts can lead to growth when addressed constructively. Their conversation highlights that happiness isn't a destination but a byproduct of moving forward and aligning with your values. Central to their discussion is the idea that progress fuels our sense of satisfaction and purpose. Drawing on stories like Alexander the Great's Gordian knot and insights from personal and professional experiences, they emphasize that progress often requires creative thinking, bold action, and the courage to challenge norms. For Patrick, progress is more than hitting financial targets—it's about measuring growth across the seven areas of life: vocation, physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and beyond. Steffany adds a nuanced perspective by linking progress to measurable milestones, whether in personal goals or professional endeavors. From athletic training to building businesses, she underscores the importance of setting benchmarks to track growth. Progress, she notes, isn't about grand leaps; even small, consistent steps can lead to profound fulfillment. The pair also explore how stagnation breeds dissatisfaction and frustration, a sentiment many felt during recent years of societal and personal upheaval. They encourage listeners to examine where they feel stuck and identify actionable steps to regain momentum. Their advice: embrace challenges as opportunities to innovate, surround yourself with the right support, and maintain clarity on your core values. As the episode wraps up, Patrick and Steffany introduce concepts from their upcoming free master classes, such as the Circle of Support and the Values Matrix. They leave listeners with a powerful takeaway: progress isn't just a value—it's a mindset that drives happiness, purpose, and success.
In this episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany explore the theme “Come Alive in 2025,” reflecting on the importance of living with intention and aligning with one's core values as the new year begins. They revisit the transformative concept “clarity equals velocity” from 2024, emphasizing how clarity can propel growth in personal and professional relationships. The episode delves into the role of values in decision-making, highlighting how compromising one's core values often leads to dissatisfaction and misalignment. Patrick and Steffany discuss the dangers of living according to “shoulds” or societal expectations, which can erode authenticity and strain relationships. They urge listeners to identify their own values and live in integrity, noting that resilience and fulfillment stem from honoring what truly matters to you. A significant part of the conversation focuses on the seven pillars of life: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, vocational, and relational fitness. The duo distinguishes between fitness—the active pursuit of growth—and wellness—a balanced, sustainable state. They share examples, such as financial fitness versus financial wellness, to illustrate how intentional focus can prepare individuals to navigate challenges while fostering resilience. Patrick and Steffany also reflect on how past adversity, such as the pandemic, has underscored the importance of preparation and adaptability. Whether it's mental resilience, financial stability, or spiritual grounding, they stress the need for self-awareness and readiness in a rapidly changing world. Practical advice, like maintaining emotional balance and preparing for uncertainties, ties the discussion to actionable steps. The episode concludes with a call to “come alive” by embracing one's values, facing adversity with courage, and striving for holistic fitness across life's domains. As Steffany notes, it's about standing firm in your truth amidst the chaos—a foundational step toward thriving in the year ahead.

They touch on the lessons learned from embracing challenges, the power of clarity in decision-making, and the humility gained through setbacks. Steffany highlights the significance of accountability—not just as a duty but as a relational gift that fosters growth and deeper connections. Looking ahead, collaboration emerges as a key theme for 2025. The duo shares their insights on the necessity of aligning with like-minded individuals, building partnerships, and having courageous conversations to let go of relationships that no longer serve personal or professional growth. They stress the importance of focus management over busywork, encouraging listeners to prioritize incremental steps toward meaningful goals rather than becoming overwhelmed by the bigger picture. Ending on a powerful note, Patrick and Steffany urge listeners to design their lives around how they want to feel in seven key areas. Their message is clear: 2025 offers an opportunity to lean into change, embrace challenges, and thrive. Stay tuned for upcoming events and insights to guide you on your journey. Happy New Year!

In this episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany explore the theme "Thrive in 2025," reflecting on the importance of clarity, completion, and intentional action as the foundation for personal and professional growth. Steffany shares insights from her recent achievements at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating in France, where her teams earned gold and bronze medals, illustrating how focused preparation and letting go of past expectations can lead to success. The couple discusses their annual practice of "completion exercises," a process of identifying and addressing unresolved aspects of life—whether in relationships, business, or personal goals. They emphasize the importance of letting go of energy-draining “incompletions” to create space for clarity and forward momentum. Procrastination, they note, often stems from avoiding these incompletions, which can become a barrier to fulfillment and even lead to feelings of overwhelm or stagnation. The episode revisits the mantra "Clarity Equals Velocity," highlighting how gaining clarity not only accelerates progress but can also create temporary chaos as we adjust to newfound focus. Patrick and Steffany explore how this principle applies across the "seven areas of life"—financial, vocational, familial, social, physical, mental, and spiritual—and share strategies for navigating challenges with intentionality and grace. The conversation kicks off with Steffany sharing her exciting trip to the Grand Prix Final in France, where she supports world-class ice dance teams from the Ice Academy of Montreal. Patrick seamlessly transitions this into a broader discussion on the paradox of competition and collaboration. The hosts reflect on the challenges of working in high-stakes environments where competitors train together, emphasizing the importance of creating a culture that elevates everyone's performance. A standout experience was their participation in the TEDx Youth event at the University of Waterloo. In this episode of the Mindset Matters podcast, hosts Patrick and Steffany dive into a candid and thought-provoking discussion about equality, gender dynamics, and navigating societal divides. They begin with a quick acknowledgment of ad interruptions, emphasizing their commitment to improving the listener experience. The core of the conversation explores the nuanced topic of equality, sparked by a rant Patrick encountered questioning traditional notions of "real men" and the demand for equality. The duo examines how differences in gender roles—whether physical, intellectual, or emotional—should be embraced rather than forced into a one-size-fits-all framework. Steffany shares her personal perspective as a woman thriving in male-dominated spaces, such as professional sports and real estate, without feeling the need to "be equal" but instead striving to be her best self. The discussion evolves into the broader societal challenges of equality versus equity, particularly in the context of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). They question whether meritocracy has been overshadowed by box-checking and whether society is losing sight of the value of individuality and shared humanity. Through their unique perspectives, they highlight the importance of honoring differences and fostering genuine connection, rather than focusing on labels or divisive ideologies. The conversation also touches on the principles of stoicism, with insights on managing emotions, focusing on what can be controlled, and seeking understanding rather than escalating conflicts. Both Patrick and Steffany emphasize the importance of aligning with personal values, surrounding oneself with supportive communities, and staying curious about differing viewpoints. Closing with humor and heartfelt reflections, the hosts remind listeners to step back, embrace common sense, and approach life with kindness, openness, and resilience. Feedback and continued dialogue are welcomed as they navigate these challenging but essential topics together.
In this week's episode of Mindset Matters, Patrick and Steffany explore the dynamics of conflict in relationships, asking the pivotal question: What are we fighting for? Instead of focusing on surface-level disagreements, they dive into the underlying needs, emotions, and assumptions that often drive conflicts. Whether it's about missed calls, unacknowledged efforts, or unmet expectations, they reflect on how these issues are rarely about the specifics and more about the emotional undercurrents. The hosts highlight three common reasons for conflict: the need for care and closeness, respect and recognition, and power and control. They candidly share examples from their own relationship, from text messages sparking misunderstandings to humorous anecdotes about dog poop duty and misplaced laundry baskets. These stories illustrate how seemingly trivial issues can represent deeper emotional needs, like trust, autonomy, and validation. Patrick and Steffany also discuss how unspoken assumptions and unmet expectations can escalate conflicts. They emphasize the importance of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and honest communication in navigating disagreements. For instance, a partner may feel frustrated over an unanswered text, but the real issue might be a desire for reassurance or connection. By shifting the focus from “What are we fighting about?” to “What are we fighting for?” couples can move beyond reactive arguments to meaningful conversations. The episode underscores that conflict, when approached with curiosity and humility, can become an opportunity for growth. Patrick and Steffany encourage listeners to examine their own patterns, articulate their needs, and recognize the efforts of their partners. With humor and wisdom, they remind us that fighting for understanding and intimacy is far more rewarding than getting stuck in the details of what sparked the fight.

In this episode of "Mindset Matters," Patrick and Steffany discuss the election of Donald Trump as U.S. President and its potential impact on Canadians. While Trump doesn't directly govern Canada, his policies may have significant effects on Canada's economy and its relations with the U.S. Patrick voices his concern over the strong emotional responses he's observed, urging listeners not to be overly swayed by mainstream media narratives. Instead, he suggests adopting a critical mindset and looking at various sources for a well-rounded perspective. He highlights the Stoic approach, which encourages focusing on what one can control rather than dwelling on the uncontrollable aspects of global politics. They transition into a broader discussion on personal growth, introducing curiosity as a foundational tool in overcoming life's challenges. Curiosity, they argue, promotes exploration and an open-minded attitude, helping individuals stay adaptable in the face of change. Steffany draws from her experience in high-performance sports, emphasizing that curiosity fosters learning and innovation. The hosts then touch on the importance of passion, noting that while it can fuel motivation, passion alone may not be sustainable over the long term. They stress the importance of purpose as a guiding force, as purpose can turn passion into a lasting commitment and provide direction through difficult times. Aligning one's life with a clear purpose, they believe, fosters resilience and helps individuals make a positive impact on others. In closing, Patrick and Steffany encourage listeners to focus on personal goals and values, rather than letting external events drain their energy. By embracing curiosity, passion, and purpose, listeners can navigate challenges with resilience and create a meaningful life that transcends the influence of political or media-driven stress.
In this episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany dive into some of the most frequently asked questions from their listeners, revealing how they handle challenges in both their personal and professional lives. One popular question centers around conflict: “What do you do when you disagree or feel triggered by each other?” Patrick and Steffany share that while they naturally have disagreements, especially given their different approaches to preparation, they make a point to keep their discussions constructive. Patrick's detail-oriented style contrasts with Steffany's more spontaneous approach, leading to occasional friction. However, they've set boundaries to avoid hurtful or personal comments, focusing instead on the issue at hand and staying respectful. For them, this commitment keeps the relationship healthy and ensures disagreements don't turn into personal conflicts. Another common question is about handling setbacks. Patrick and Steffany openly share their approach: they don't dwell on blame, instead focusing on how they can take responsibility for their reactions. They see setbacks as learning opportunities and practice resilience by shifting their perspectives to see challenges as growth experiences. Listeners are also curious about jealousy, especially around Steffany's high-energy work and travels. Patrick admits he sometimes wishes he could join her, but he feels proud and supportive of her achievements. This mutual respect helps them balance individual ambitions with their partnership. Lastly, they address the challenge of differing beliefs within relationships, reflecting on how they navigated opposing views during the pandemic. They advise couples to communicate openly and seek alignment, even if that means involving a neutral third party to help guide the conversation. Through candid answers and self-reflection, Patrick and Steffany provide insights on creating a resilient, loving relationship that thrives despite challenges.
In this episode of Mindset Matters, hosts Patrick and Steffany delve into the compelling topic of identity beyond professional and personal roles. They explore the question, “Who am I if I'm not that?” and discuss how deeply people's identities are tied to what they do rather than who they truly are. Patrick and Steffany reflect on how common it is to introduce ourselves by our professions and roles, which creates a reliance on these roles for self-worth and value. This reliance, they explain, often leads to a crisis when those roles are no longer part of our lives, such as in career transitions, retirement, or the shift to becoming an empty nester. The conversation turns to how societal expectations shape our identities, often leaving people unprepared when major life changes remove the titles they've depended on. Citing statistics, Patrick and Steffany discuss how the lifespan post-retirement has drastically reduced in recent years. This trend indicates a profound need for purpose, especially for individuals accustomed to busy careers. Many retirees struggle to find meaning outside of work, even experiencing health issues due to this loss of purpose. Patrick notes the recurring trend of public figures like rock stars returning to the stage not just for financial reasons, but to fulfill an inner drive for purpose. They highlight the importance of people, purpose, and passion as fundamental elements that keep us engaged and inspired. Steffany emphasizes that without a meaningful contribution to make, individuals may experience melancholy or a sense of emptiness. She relates this to athletes she has worked with, particularly those transitioning out of professional sports, who often find it difficult to define their worth outside their athletic achievements. Steffany stresses that early conversations around these identity shifts can alleviate some of the struggles, allowing athletes, professionals, and anyone in a similar situation to embrace new chapters with confidence. The episode closes with the parable of the Golden Buddha, a clay statue hiding a core of solid gold. Over centuries, the gold was concealed, much like how people cover their true selves with layers of societal expectations and roles. Steffany and Patrick use this metaphor to remind listeners of the value within each person—value that can only be discovered by “chipping away” at the external identity markers. They urge listeners to ask themselves, “Who am I beneath all these roles?” and to consider how self-discovery and authenticity contribute to a meaningful, passion-driven life.
