Vi kigger nu på en af ikke blot kunsthistoriens, men populærkulturens kæmper, grafikeren Giovanni Battista Piranesi, som med sine arkitekturfantasier var med til at omdanne den vestlige kulturs imaginære rum. Også i tegneserierne. Piranesi er mest berømt for sin serie af såkaldte fængselsfantasier — Carceri d'invenzione (to hovedudgaver, 1550 og 1561) — der iscenesætter enorme katakombagtige og evigt forgrenede rum med accenter af indespærring, tortur og fortabelse. Disse uudgrundelige rum nedbryder den arkitektoniske logik, de umiddelbart er konstrueret efter, og tangerer derved noget uudgrundeligt og underbevidst. Ren civilisation, ingen natur. Den forestilling om det uoverskueligt kolossale, om arkitekturen som mentalt landskab og billede på civilisationen. Kunsthistorisk foregreb han Cézanne og kubismen, mens hans påvirkning på den moderne populærkultur ses i alt fra H. P. Lovecrafts R'Lyeh til the Grand Staircase i Hogwarts, og fra Fritz Langs Metropolis til Jean-Jacques Annauds filmatisering af Umberto Ecos Name of the Rose. I tegneserien spøger han i alt fra Windsor McCays Befuddle Hall til Philippe Druillets elefantine fantasier; fra selvmordsskakten i Moebius og Jodorowskys John Difool til Frederik Schuiten og Benoît Peeters serie om Hemmelighedsfulde byer. Herhjemme fandt han sin fornemmeste arvtager i grafikeren Palle Nielsen. Piranesi (1720—1778) var fra Venedig, men tilbragte størstedelen af sin karriere, fra sidst i 1540erne og frem, i Rom. Der blev han en af byens definitive skildrere, på tværs af historien — fra antikkens fragmenterede storhed til samtidens byplanlægning, og fra den klassiske arkæologi til fantasiiens fortid. Vi kortlægger karrieren og analyserer udvalgte værker i anledning af den store udstilling, kurateret af Hanne Kolind Paulsen, som kan ses på Statens Museum for Kunst i København indtil 27. februar, når der ikke er coronalukket.

Otto Hunte (1881–1960), der vielleicht bedeutendste Architekt der Universum-Film AG (Ufa) in den 1920er und 30er Jahren, war für die Ausstattung vieler Großproduktionen der klassischen deutschen Filmgeschichte verantwortlich, darunter auch Fritz Langs METROPOLIS (1925/26). DFF-Sammlungsleiter Hans-Peter Reichmann spricht über einen der Entwürfe Otto Huntes von der Zukunftsstadt Metropolis, der zu den am häufigsten ausgeliehenen Archivobjekten des DFF zählt.

Der Erfolg eines Films wird meistens am Einspielergebnis und am Kritikerecho gemessen. Wir beschäftigen uns in dieser Folge aber damit, wenn Filme erst weit nach ihrer Veröffentlichung zum Hit oder sogar zum Kult werden. Denn unsere Vorstellung von erfolgreichen Filmen ist häufig von der Milchmädchenrechnung „mehr eingespielt als gekostet“ geprägt. In der Filmgeschichte gibt es immer wieder Beispiele von Werken, die erst den Zahn der Zeit brauchten, um auf irgendeine Art und Weise wiederentdeckt zu werden. Lucas erzählt gleich von drei zunächst gescheiterten Filmen. Fritz Langs Metropolis ist Dauergast auf fast jeder Filmhochschule und beeinflusst das Science-Fiction-Genre noch heute. Für die UFA war das ambitionierte Projekt aber eine finanzielle Katastrophe. Einer der Filme, die bei Metropolis abguckten, ist Blade Runner. Das verregnete, vernebelte Los Angeles im Film konnte sich bei Erscheinen nicht gegen die Konkurrenz durchsetzen und ging Sang und Klanglos unter. Ein Schicksal, das auch den Nachfolger Blade Runner 2049 ereilte. Und das trotz bestechender Optik und einer vielseitigen Geschichte, die aktuelle gesellschaftliche Themen aufgreift und diskutiert. Kritisch gegenüber der Gesellschaft sind auch Paul Verhoevens Filme. Mit Robocop, Basic Instinct und Starship Troopers verführt er sein Publikum und inszeniert auf der Oberfläche recht simple aber provokante Filme. Wer hinter die zahlreichen Gewalt- und Sex-Szenen schaut, entdeckt eine clevere Satire, die nie den einfachen Weg geht. Genauso sollte auch Showgirls sein. Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Las Vegas und Amerikas Umgang mit Sexualität wurde aber zu Verhoevens größtem Flop. Recht kurz nach der Veröffentlichung entwickelte der Film eine Eigendynamik mit treuer Fangemeinschaft. Im Podcast diskutieren wir darüber, ob Showgirls jetzt ein verkanntes Meisterwerk, übles Machwerk oder irgendwie beides ist.

Brigitte Helms Doppelrolle als Maschinen-Madonna in Fritz Langs Metropolis ist bis heute legendär. Die UFA-Studios nehmen die blutjunge Schauspielerin unter Vertrag. Die entdeckt aber schnell ihren eigenen Willen und klagt vor Gericht gegen die Rollenauswahl der UFA: Immer den Vamp spielen, das ist ihr zu wenig.

Yo-Yo Ma investigates the relationship between music and visual art. In this film, the talented cellist plays the music of Bach in a virtual prison based on the Carceri, the imaginary prisons found in the etchings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Along the way, audiences hear from architect Moshe Safdie and others while learning of Piranesi's only built church project, the Santa Maria del Priorato. The exhibition, Piranesi, Rome, and the Arts of Design, includes a complete set of the prison etchings as well as an innovative 3-D video projection based on them. Before the film, Dr. John Marciari, Curator of European Art and Head of Provenance Research, will give a lecture about the haunting, nightmarish world of Piranesi's prisons, architectural fantasies that demonstrate the dark side of Piranesi's imagination. Prefiguring the dark imagining of the Romantic era, the Carceri are thought to have been the later model for everything from M.C.
