„Was ist denn jetzt geplant? Alles Liebe! From award-winning journalist Kenneth Miller comes the definitive story of the scientists who set out to answer two questions: “Why do we sleep?” and "How can we sleep better?”A century ago, sleep was considered a state of nothingness—even a primitive habit that we could learn to overcome. Then, an immigrant scientist and his assistant spent a month in the depths of a Kentucky cave, making nationwide headlines and thrusting sleep science to the forefront of our consciousness. In the 1920s, Nathaniel Kleitman founded the world's first dedicated sleep lab at the University of Chicago, where he subjected research participants (including himself) to a dizzying array of tests and tortures. But the tipping point came in 1938, when his cave experiment awakened the general public to the unknown—and vital—world of sleep. Kleitman went on to mentor the talented but troubled Eugene Aserinsky, whose discovery of REM sleep revealed the astonishing activity of the dreaming brain, and William Dement, a jazz-bass playing revolutionary who became known as the father of sleep medicine. Dement, in turn, mentored the brilliant maverick Mary Carskadon, who uncovered an epidemic of sleep deprivation among teenagers, and launched a global movement to fight it.Award-winning journalist Kenneth Miller weaves together science and history to tell the story of four outsider scientists who took sleep science from fringe discipline to mainstream obsession through spectacular experiments, technological innovation, and single-minded commitment. Readers will walk away with a comprehensive understanding of sleep and why it affects so much of our lives.Kenneth Miller is a contributing editor for Discover, and his work has appeared in Time, Life, Esquire, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, Aeon, and many other publications. His honors include the John Bartlow Martin Award for Public Interest Magazine Journalism, the ASJA Award for Best Science Writing, and the June Roth Memorial Award for Medical Writing. Today is Sunday, January 28th and Happy 49th Birthday to MLB player Jermaine Dye. ***01.28.24 – BIRTHDAY – JERMAIN DYE*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett County Public Schools.   Gwinnett Schools Face Security Breach as Thirty-Seven Cars are Vandalized on Tuesday Gwinnett Commissioners Request Reevaluation of Mulberry Cityhood Proposal from Legislators Research Reveals Long-term Developmental Impact of Premature Birth on Children's Lives All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: GCPS   STORY 1: Thirty-seven Cars Were Broken Into at Gwinnett Schools Tuesday. Here's What We Know. Gwinnett County Public Schools Police are investigating a series of car break-ins at Archer High School, Trip Elementary School, and Brookwood Elementary School. A total of 37 cars were unlawfully entered or broken into within an hour and a half. The incidents involved theft of personal items, including electronics, driver's licenses, credit cards, and purses. The police are reviewing security camera footage and collaborating with local and state law enforcement agencies to determine any patterns. Although the thieves encountered various levels of vehicle security, the police emphasize the importance of securing valuables, locking car doors, and reporting suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing. Chief Tony Lockard urges reporting at 770-513-6715 or via the GCPS Tips app. STORY 2: Gwinnett Commissioners Urge Legislators To Reconsider Mulberry Cityhood Proposal Gwinnett County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution urging state legislators to carefully consider the implications of creating the proposed city of Mulberry in the northeastern part of the county. State Rep. Chuck Efstration introduced legislation for a referendum on Mulberry's incorporation, responding to concerns about a 700-unit apartment development. County officials emphasize the current service delivery model's efficiency and comprehensive nature. The commissioners argue that Mulberry's structure, relying on Gwinnett for services like police and fire protection, may negatively impact the proposed city, the existing 16 cities, and Gwinnett as a whole. A fact sheet outlining concerns has been sent to Gwinnett legislators.   STORY 3: Premature birth can affect children's development in later life: study A new 13-year study, following over a million births, reveals that children born moderately (32-33 weeks) or late preterm (34-36 weeks) face higher long-term risks of neurodevelopmental difficulties. These difficulties include conditions like epilepsy, autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. The study emphasizes that children born in these windows constitute 80% of all preterm births, and the risks should not be underestimated. The research, published in The BMJ, examined 1,281,690 children born in Sweden between 1998 and 2012, concluding that compared to full-term births, those born moderately or late preterm showed higher risks for various neurodevelopmental impairments.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Kanekoa Texeira, a former G-Braves pitcher, will manage the Gwinnett Stripers, joined by pitching coaches Kevin McAvoy and Mike McCarthy, hitting coach Dan DeMent, and coach Wigberto Nevarez. Texeira, the eighth Gwinnett manager, has prior coaching experience and managed High-A Rome and Double-A Mississippi. McAvoy, returning to Gwinnett, served as the Stripers' interim pitching coach in 2022. McCarthy joins from the Oakland Athletics as the bullpen coach. DeMent, with 15 years in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, becomes the hitting coach, and Nevarez continues as coach for Gwinnett. The staff also includes strength and conditioning coach Tyler Enns and athletic trainers Greg Harrel and Joel Wiggins. Gwinnett Stripers' Opening Night is on April 2 against Louisville. STORY 5: Georgia Begins Work on Sanford Stadium Hedges The University of Georgia's football team is revitalizing the iconic hedges around Sanford Stadium, known as "Between the Hedges," a tradition since the stadium's dedication in 1929. The current hedges, installed during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, are reaching the end of their typical lifespan. The university has been growing replacement hedges, and the Athletic Association will start proactive revitalization work in February. This project involves full soil replacement, irrigation, drainage work, and replanting with the same lineage of hedges that have been part of the Georgia sidelines for 95 years. The revitalization is set to be completed by the 2024 G-Day Game.   We'll be back in a moment.   Break 3: INGLES 2   STORY 6: Atlanta Falcons Announce Raheem Morris as Head Coach The Atlanta Falcons have appointed Raheem Morris as their new head coach. Morris, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, takes over as the 19th head coach in Falcons history. In addition, Terry Fontenot will continue as the general manager, reporting directly to team owner Arthur M. Blank on football matters. Rich McKay remains the CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment but will no longer be involved in day-to-day football operations. Morris brings 26 years of NFL experience and recently helped the Rams secure a Super Bowl title. His tenure officially begins as the head coach for the 2024 season. STORY 7: Kenneth Eugene Smith executed by nitrogen gas in Alabama for 1988 murder-for-hire scheme Kenneth Eugene Smith was executed in Alabama for the 1988 murder-for-hire of Elizabeth Sennett, marking the first-ever use of nitrogen gas for execution. The process began at 7:56 p.m., and Smith was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. He made a final statement through a mask, expressing love and peace. Smith's execution was initially halted in November 2022 due to a failed lethal injection attempt. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected appeals arguing that the nitrogen gas method violated the Eighth Amendment. Smith's role in the murder-for-hire was linked to the death of Elizabeth Sennett in 1988.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: ESOG Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we feature my conversation with beloved folk firebrand Iris Dement. Born the youngest of fourteen to a singing Pentecostal family in Arkansas and raised in California, Dement released her iconic 1992 John Prine-endorsed debut Infamous Angel and has been creating poetic protest records and warm collaborations ever since (garnering two folk Grammy nominations along the way), culminating in her much anticipated and fiery new LP Working On A World. Certain songwriters in the folk field will occasionally speak up about injustice or corruption - but with Working On A World, Dement puts the protest front and center: honoring luminaries like Mahalia Jackson, John Lewis, Martin Luther King Jr. and even The Chicks for giving her hope that putting your principles and life on the line will help bend history towards progress and righteousness. Dement, who is now based in Iowa with her musician and collaborator husband Greg Brown (check out their biting co-write “I'll Be Your Jesus”), will be the first to say that at times in her wide-ranging career, playing clubs to enraptured but small audiences, she has questioned whether she was doing enough to make a difference. But songs like the epic Dylan-esque take-down “Going Down To Sing in Texas” show that Dement is still at her fired-up best, confronting the Lone Star State's open carry gun laws that put so many at risk, while also spitting in the face of all the wannabe tyrants who shun the very progress she is still hoping to see. In many ways, Working On A World is a hard-won release of pent up energy, created over the course of six years with co-producers Richard Bennett, Jim Rooney and Pieta Brown. While many of her longtime fans are used to her fearless political confrontations - 1996's seething The Way I Should and its dark anthem “Wasteland of the Free" demand answers from sexual abusers and government war mongers alike - casual listeners may only know Dement from her playful duets with sonic soulmate John Prine, most notably the foul-mouthed love song “In Spite Of Ourselves.” With a little laugh, she says she's alright with that too. Life is long and the music, no matter the light or the dark, is equally as powerful. This week's guest on the Original Sports Podcast with Mark Maradei is Martina Kwan. Born in Hong Kong to a German mother and Chinese father, Martina Kwan was destined for a life that was different.  She spent her childhood in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, but credits living in war torn Beirut, Lebanon between the ages of 8-10, as an experience that defined much of her fearlessness today.   After earning two Master of Science degrees, she worked in the male dominated finance and accounting fields in New York City with KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Wall Street's Lehman Brothers. She has  won Telly and Emmy awards with the first company she founded, So! Animation. Daring to be different is what drives Martina today...literally!  Three years ago, at the age of 50, Martina knew it was time to take a car racing hobby she occasionally enjoyed to the next level.  Proving that it's never too late, she decided to become a race car driver. Since her debut as the world's only Female Chinese/European race car driver just four years ago, Martina has become a 3-time champion in a male-dominated racing category in her Porsche 911. She set track records in each of her Porsche car classes, and has won first place for the majority of each of the past 3 years she has driven.  In addition, she drove semi-professionally in the Blancpain GT World Challenge where she podiumed twice in 7 races.   She is a Champion Mindset Coach helping women reach their potential and attract high paying clients.  In addition, she is the Co-Founder of the World's First Racing School DK Racing School, co-founded by a Male and Female FIA Licensed Race Car Driver, Dement and Kwan. We will talk with Martina about her life growing up including the lessons she learned from Beirut. How she transitioned from Wall Street to being an Entrepreneur. What got her interested in racing cars and why she decided to start her own racing school. Her goals in helping others realize their self value.
