After Israel settled in Goshen, the narrative returns to the famine in the land. Our passage contrasts the people of Egypt and the people of God (Israel). The people of Egypt struggled to survive the famine and sold their livestock, land, and themselves. In contrast, the people of God are acquiring land and becoming fruitful and multiplying. The people of Egypt come to Joseph to save them from death (starvation). In contrast, Jacob comes to Joseph to help him deal with his body after death. What was the distinguishing factor between the people of Egypt and the people of God? God and His promises.
God, Israel, and The Church A Sermon by Pastor Richard Sfameni, Lead Pastor of Victory Church in Providence, RI. Paul's Perspective Paul's Passion Romans 9:1-5 NKJV Israel's Rejection of Christ 9 I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
In this episode we explore the concept of a Mishkan - a place in which God's presence resides within the people of Israel. Why this is historically unique and what it means in terms of the God-Israel covenant that has stood for 4 thousand years.
God, Israel, And You by FCC Palmer, IA
On the day of Pentecost in Acts, chapter 2, God poured out the Holy Spirit as promised by Jesus. He wants His power to be apparent in our lives, but Satan's powers tries to stop God from operating in us. Jesus said, "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8, NKJV). Though we have been given the power of God, for some reason the Holy Spirit is not moving through us as saints. Luke, chapter 9, begins: "Then He [Jesus] called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases" (v. 1, NKJV). It is important to understand that the disciples were not born again, and the power given to them is not the same as we have after Pentecost. The resurrection had not occurred and the church had not been established. They were given authority to use the power Jesus had to work miracles in keeping with His ministry among the Jews. "He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said to them, 'Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece'" (Luke 9:2-3, NKJV). Jesus explained that if they are not accepted among the Children of God [Israel, the Jews], they are to leave in no uncertain terms; ". . . shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them" (Luke 9:5b, NKJV). After the resurrection, Jesus commanded these same disciples, and us as well, to preach the gospel with His authority, His power [Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-18]. This "Great Commission" is still given to us today and the power to do it, including the power to heal and cast out demons. "And these signs will follow those who believe. In My name they will cast out demons; . . . they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover" (Mark 16:17-18, NKJV). This commission and power is for believers. "And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen" (Mark 16:20, NKJV). And they believed, so it was done; and still is done. But we find there's doubt, fear and pride causing us to imagine we don't have such power and authority. These "spirits"-- doubt, fear and pride -- make our ministry ineffective and without power. The apostle Paul exhorts: "Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5, KJV). Our ministry becomes effective when we cast these "spirits" out of our minds. In this message, I explore our commission and how we can have a more effective ministry as a believer. Join me! In this 5 part series “The Way of Jesus”, we talk about who Jesus is, what following Him looks like, and why life is better in relationship with Him. We will explore his declaration “I am the way, the truth, and the life” and what that actually means. And we will consider that maybe Jesus is not just a means to an end but is the answer to all we've been looking for and the only provider of genuine fulfillment. In a moment of uncertainty, God gives Moses certainty about the kind of God Israel has as their Lord. After telling Moses that Pharaoh's hard heart is for God's greater purpose in revealing His might, God reaffirms to Moses who He is, and what He has promised to do for Israel even before they came to Egypt. Join as we reflect on these reminders of God's attributes that were given for believers today just as much as it was given to Israel when it was originally written.
Key Question: What Is A Wilderness Season? A season of life where things are: Difficult Confusing Disorienting Uphill Out of the ordinary Wilderness Seasons are a MAJOR PART of the Christian Walk We anticipate them A WILDERNESS SEASON IS WHERE WE LEARN WHO GOD IS, HOW HE LOVES US, AND HOW WE SHOULD INTERACT WITH HIM 1 Peter 1:6-7 6 You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials 7 so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. This series is about MAKING THE MOST out of these seasons Don't waste pain Learn what God is teaching We will be looking at the TRUE story of the EXODUS The freeing of the people of God (Israel) from captivity in Egypt One of the most powerful stories in human history The story up to this point: Joseph 400 years in Egypt Exodus 1:13-14 13 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly 14 and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. The Exodus story is also Moses' story Placed into a basket on the Nile Rescued by Pharaoh's daughter Raised in Pharaoh's Household Kills an Egyptian taskmaster Flees to the “WILDERNESS” for 40 years Burning Bush God sends him BACK to Egypt The Great Rescue We have a people who are: Oppressed Broken Tired Under Pressure Stuck LOST Step 1 of God's Rescue is: 1: God Promises Freedom Exodus 6 2 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the Lord.' 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as aliens. 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.” 9 Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor. Israel's freedom is found in God (Yahweh) ALONE God is REINTRODUCING himself to his people He reminds them of His promise to their ancestors But the people DO NOT believe They are so broken So LOST How will God free them from the most powerful kingdom in the known world? Step 2 of God's Rescue is: 2: God Confronts Egypt Exodus 7 1 The Lord answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet. 2 You must say whatever I command you; then Aaron your brother must declare it to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites go from his land. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart and multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you, but I will put my hand into Egypt and bring the military divisions of my people the Israelites out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. 5 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the Israelites from among them.” Egypt was the SUPERPOWER of its day Superpowers think they are untouchable They can do WHATEVER THEY WANT to WHOMEVER THEY WANT God confronts the “gods” of Egypt through the plagues Examples: Turn Nile River to blood – Hapi, the bull god, god of the Nile; Isis, goddess of the Nile; Khnum, ram god, guardian of the Nile Death of livestock – Hathor, goddess with a cow head; Apis, the bull god, symbol of fertility Darkness – Ra, the sun god; Horus, a sun god; Nut, a sky goddess; Hathor, a sky goddess The “gods” of the Egyptians were POWERLESS against the God of Israel At first, they tried to COPY God's power, but they could not and were powerless to stop it Step 3 of God's Rescue is: 3: Israel Chooses to walk out free Exodus 12 33 Now the Egyptians pressured the people in order to send them quickly out of the country, for they said, “We're all going to die!” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls wrapped up in their clothes on their shoulders. 35 The Israelites acted on Moses's word and asked the Egyptians for silver and gold items and for clothing. 36 And the Lord gave the people such favor with the Egyptians that they gave them what they requested. In this way they plundered the Egyptians. God had MADE A WAY Israel still had to choose to LEAVE All they had known All the gods they had known Application: WHAT DOES THIS STORY MEAN FOR US? 1: God Promises Freedom – We Need Freedom Like how Egypt made slaves out of Israel – Sin makes slaves out of us. Romans 6:16 16 Don't you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness? Sin… Oppresses us Harms us Kills us The “WILDERNESS OF HUMANITY” is because of sin Some of you are LOST IN THE WILDERNESS because of your sin Your choices Way of thinking Lifestyles Beliefs There are HOLDING YOU CAPTIVE Every wilderness season is NOT because of some hidden sin, but many times it is… Father, please reveal to me any hidden sin, thought pattern or way of living that is not in alignment with your ways 2: God Confronted Egypt – God Confronts lies and breaks strongholds John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Jesus came to show us the way through the TRUTH of His life Sin is based on lies… It says… I know what's best for me… This isn't hurting anyone… No one will ever know… Did God really say? In order to free us, God must directly challenge the idols, false assumptions, and lies—whether they originate from within ourselves or from our adversary What does this look like for us? Reading and understanding the Bible (Learning Truth) Sermons and Bible study with others (Hearing Truth) Relationships that can speak TRUTH into your life (Hard Truths) Holy Spirit Conviction 3: Israel Chose to walk out Free – We must choose to walk in God's Freedom Galatians 5:1 For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery. Staying in Egypt meant staying a slave — Staying in our sin means staying its slave When God frees us, we must CHOOSE to walk in that freedom Don't return Don't stay put MOVE! The reason you may be in the wilderness is for God to DEMONSTRATE his POWER and TRUTH to you Can't see it when things are good Our God is a God RESCUES HIS PEOPLE Then and NOW Don't be a slave to LESSER THINGS The START of making it through the wilderness is BREAKING THE HOLD of SIN, LIES, and STRONGHOLDS It is only the POWER, TRUTH, and FREEDOM of God that can give us hope and purpose for our lives and our world
As we conclude the series "Where Your Feet Are", we discover that to truly live in the present moment, we must take control of our thoughts and be mindful of the pitfalls in our thought process – our "thinking traps". Hosea rehearses the Lord's case against Israel. They have failed him, they have pursued Baal, and they have failed to have an exclusive relationship with the Lord. This prophet is warning us that we might think that we are fine because we can trust in everything other than the Lord. This is why John the Baptist calls Israel to turn away from their confidence and to turn unto Christ. Hosea is fundamentally exhorting God's people to find their contentment and fulfillment in the Lord and His kingdom.
“It is a Land that the Lord your God seeks out; the eyes of the Lord your God, are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.” (DEUT 11:12) Anyone who has ever made a trip to Israel, has felt the impact on their life and spiritual growth. The Bible comes to life. Jenny's guest Donna Jollay is in from Israel where she's the Director of Christian Relations at Israel365. December 17, 2023 PM, Ezra 9:1-15.Ezra confesses to God Israel's guilt and reflects upon God's upon past mercies despite the nation's sins. Our Scripture reading was Psalms 25-26.
One of the challenges I've wrestled with in Jeremiah,Is that it is so distant and unpleasant that it seems irrelevant or offensive- distant, because we are out of sync with that period of time and culture• we don't share their norms, values, or kinship structures◦ their geopolitical context was nothing like ours today◦ their hardships are not our hardships• their language is foreign, their names are foreign, their cities are foreign◦ moreover, they had ruined their relationship with God◦ Israel had violated and broken God's covenantAnd many nations will pass by this city, and every man will say to his neighbor, “Why has the LORD dealt thus with this great city?” And they will answer, “Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and worshiped other gods and served them” (Jer. 22:9)- it's unpleasant, because hell-fire preachers have capitalized on damnationChuck Fromm, “There are lots of angry men behind pulpits”• they shout at us like abusive parents who take their anger out on the children• this has left us with an unpleasant taste in our mouths◦ we've become sensitive to these passages of doom◦ on other hand, do we want a God who has no anger?a God who doesn't grieve? Doesn't react? Doesn't care?
Sermon from Sunday, October 8th. More at followingtogether.com/messages. As we read the Scripture, especially in the Psalms, we see in "ancient times" the people of God (Israel) had patterns of thankfulness that were a regular part of the assembly and everyday life. These patterns aided the congregation to focus their minds on God, specifically bringing to mind attributes and actions of God. When spoken to one another, they created a landscape where all could draw from to respond to God in appropriate gratitude.
This chapter promises and unbreakable future for the Jewish People. Two models animate this chapter: 1. The infertile women who bears children, the forsaken wife who renews her marriage; and 2. The tortured slave who is released from his captivity and suffering. We examine these two metaphors and what they say about the God-Israel connection.
Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Taught at Agape Bible Church on May 28, 2023. [43 minutes]

It has been three months since Israel crossed the Red Sea and left Egypt behind. It has been three months following Moses and the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. It has been three months of seeing Yahweh work miracle after miracle every day. It has been three months since the gift of manna was provided for them every day so they could eat in the desert. It has been three months of being tested by God to prepare them for this moment: the moment they meet God on Mount Sinai. Listen to this week's podcast to hear the exciting story of Yahweh descending on the mountain to meet Moses and to give Moses something that will change Israel and the history of the world forever. I have found many people are aware and identify with the INFANTS at Corinth, those still stuck on milk, and they don't see this as a problem. They identify with rewards being lost, but still being saved as though through fire. But if people really know the whole story about the Corinthian church, they would be much more concerned and actually distance themselves from the INFANTS.In this episode we will start with the end of the books and work backwards. Hindsight truly is 20/20. When you look at the danger the church was in and the warnings God gives to them, people tend to slow down in jumping to conclusions and firmly holding on to faulty beliefs. Working backwards we point out the following aspects of this church, including the most revealing at the end (or beginning of 1 Corinthians) where we find out the full disclosure of who these infants actually were and the danger.2Corinthians: ch13 - Previously stated a second time and now a third, Paul will not spare those who sinned and still haven't repented (carryover from ch 12) ch13- commands them to examine (test) themselves to see if they are even in the faith, unless the fail the test and are disqualified. Although Paul was being accused, he says that he does not fail the test even though there were those who were apparently claiming Paul was disqualified. ch12 - Paul says he is afraid that he will still find sin in the Corinthian church (strife, jealousy, tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance .... ch 11 - Paul is afraid they will be deceived by the Devil, just as Eve, and accept a different Jesus, Spirit, and gospel that was preached to them, because they were currently accepting / tolerating these lies. He warns them against those who had come in and trying to be regarded as Paul in their preaching. Paul says they are false apostles, servants of the devil, disguised as servants of righteousness and not to listen to them. ch 10 - Paul says they will punish all disobedience once the church finally gets obedience (we will see there were many pockets of problems in the church) ch 7 - Paul pleads with them to make room in their hearts for them, that Paul didn't wrong anyone or take advantage. He says he does not regret causing them sorrow, because the sorrow was a godly sorrow that lead to repentance leading to salvation (this is a follow up from his first letter, but as we already saw from the end of this 2nd letter the problems still persisted within the church). He says we are to perfect holiness in the fear of God ch6 - He begs and urges the church to NOT receive the grace of God in vain. He says the church is not restrained by Paul, but by their own affections. He then commands them they must be separate and holy. ch5 - He warns against those in the church that take pride in outward appearance vs the inward condition of the heart. He says they are to become a new creation, to become the righteousness of God in Christ. ch 4 - Warns about those who are perishing because the veil still lies over their heart ch 3 - Some of the Corinthians were referred to as a letter of Christ written not with ink, but the Spirit; not on tablets of stone, but of the human heart ch2- need to be careful about the schemes of the Devil ch 1- As God is witness to Paul's soul, he came again to Corinth NOT to SPARE them. 1 Corinthians ch15 - Some needed to STOP being deceived, awake to righteousness, and STOP sinning, they had NO knowledge of God. Some also had a vain, worthless faith. To others he said they are being saved, IF they hold fast the word preached to them, unless they believed in vain ch13- Some who speak in tongues, prophecy, have knowledge, know the mysteries of God, have all faith, give all their money to the poor, and willing to give their life .... He says their life is NOTHING and of NO PROFIT. I wonder why? Paul says he is NO LONGER an INFANT. No longer does he thing, reason, speak or live like an INFANT; that he is now a man. He also says those who are arrogant do not have love. ch11 - Warns of the church gatherings to celebrate Christ. Says they get together for the worse, not good. Why, because they have divisions. He goes on and says they despise the church of God. He says some are weak, sick, and dead, because they are partaking of the Lords supper in an unworthy manner. Says they will be guilty of the blood of Christ. ch10 - warns the church not to be destroyed like the chosen people of God (Israel). The ate the same spiritual food/drink from Christ. God destroyed them because of sin. Says this was written for our instruction today. Commands them to be careful to not fall, and that God is faithful and has already provided a way for them to always overcome and endure temptation, not to fail. ch9 - Paul responds to those trying to judge him, that he lives for God for the purpose of winning souls. That he runs the race in such a way, so that he won't be disqualified ch8 - warns that knowledge makes arrogant, BUT those who love are known by God ch7 - What matters is keeping the commandments of God ch6 - Paul accuses some in the church of being defeated and wronging and defrauding their own brethren. He then reminds them the unrighteous WILL NOT inherit the kingdom of God. He then says that only SOME of them were washed and sanctified. ch5 - He tell the church they have leaven that has mixed in with the lump and needs to be purged. He then commands to remove those called brothers that are still sinning. He says we do not judge outside the church, but inside the church to remove the wicked or sinning brother. ch4 - Paul says he has written to them so that they WON'T become ARROGANT. The problem is he then says that SOME of them HAVE become ARROGANT. Some are boasting, considering themselves wise, strong and with honor. (This is opposite of who God says has peace with Him) Ch3 - Paul declares the INFANTS are those who are NOT SPIRITUAL. He says he couldn't give them solid food before, and STILL CANNOT give them solid food, because they are still worldly (fleshly). He then accuses the INFANTS of the division originally discussed in ch1. This is consistent with Hebrews ch5/6, Ephesians ch4, Galatians ch4 (we covered all this in those episodes of those books/chapters). Infants are still slaves of the world, have not been set free, do not have the Spirit of God. ch2 - defines that the natural (worldly) man DOES NOT HAVE THE SPIRIT, cannot understand the things of the Spirit. The natural man IS NOT the Spiritual man. God has rejected those who consider themselves wise, strong, noble (honor) ... sounds like the ARROGANT FROM CH4. Ch1 - PROBLEM in the church, some where creating DIVISIONS. Did not have the wisdom of God (Spiritual) but wisdom of the world. Do you still want to be like the INFANT now?
