Every single one of us is guilty of using some pretty common forms of Stinkin' Thinkin' at times. Psychologists use fancier word to describe Stinkin' Thinkin'… we call them Cognitive Distortions. Thinking Traps are also words to describe negative thoughts because they often leave us feeling TRAPPED on a hamster wheel of negative thoughts that spin out and result in negative feelings and ultimately result in unhealthy behaviors. I had a patient say it much more clearly… she told me, “Negative thoughts result in negative behaviors.” Enough said! Therefore, we need to become aware of the Cognitive Distortions we use most frequently and employ the skills from last week's episode to change our thoughts and therefore change our behavior. BECAUSE… Healthy thoughts lead to Healthy Behaviors! Today, I'm talking about thinking traps. Thinking traps are just unhelpful, automatic thoughts that we tend to have on repeat. They're patterns of thinking that make you believe you're stuck. We all have them at times, and the AWESOME thing about being a human being is that we have the ability to think about our thinking! Once we recognize them, we can get ourselves out of thinking traps! A 2004 study found that the ability to recognize our thoughts and to increase their flexibility and accuracy can be measured, taught, and improved. This is HUGE! It's also called neuroplasticity. It's a key component of cognitive resilience. Thinking traps are a natural part of our regular thought processes. It's just how our brains work, so knowing that we all have them AND we have the power to recognize them and get out of them is mental power, Friends! What is the connection between "mind reading" as a cognitive distortion and its impact on personal relationships and self-perception? How "excessive generalization" distorts individuals' perceptions and leads to exaggerated fears? How does the "abuse of imperatives" cognitive distortion affect individuals' expectations and self-criticism, and what role does it play in their interactions with others? What are the potential consequences of "tunnel vision" or selective attention in decision-making and problem-solving? How can practicing awareness and challenging assumptions help individuals address the "mind-reading" thinking trap and other cognitive distortions? What are the examples of real-life situations where "excessive generalization" and "tunnel vision" cognitive distortions might lead to problems or conflicts? How can the concept of "confirmation bias" be related to the cognitive bias of "tunnel vision"? In the context of self-diagnostic questions, what are the potential long-term costs of holding onto limiting beliefs and cognitive distortions? How can mindfulness techniques be used to address cognitive distortions like "tunnel vision" and improve decision-making? What strategies can individuals use to encourage input from diverse sources and avoid selective attention in their decision-making processes?
What is the definition of cognitive distortion also known as thinking trap, and how does it relate to negative emotions and behaviors? What are the characteristics and potential consequences of the "all or nothing" thinking trap, and how it is associated with perfectionism? How can mindfulness techniques be used to overcome the thinking traps? What are the key features of the "catastrophizing" thinking trap, and how does it lead to heightened anxiety and stress? What are the strategies for addressing the "ignoring or overlooking positives" cognitive distortion and the potential impact it has on self-esteem and personal growth? How does the cognitive distortion of "labeling" affect self-esteem and relationships, and why does it tend to lead to binary thinking? What are the potential consequences of exaggerating negative events or belittling positive ones, as described in the "exaggerating and/or belittling" thinking trap? How can practicing gratitude help individuals overcome the tendency to exaggerate negatives and belittle positives in their lives? In the context of cognitive distortions, why is self-awareness important, and how does it play a role in recognizing and addressing these traps? Could you provide examples of how these cognitive distortions might manifest in daily life, both in terms of thought patterns and their real-world effects on behavior and emotions?
Elizabeth Louis joins us this week as we discuss “thinking traps” and how they affect your thoughts, performance and outlook. She and Dave talk about positive psychology and how shifting your thinking makes for a more positive mindset. Liz also talks about having a framework to create change and the importance of positive self-talk.
How you talk to yourself plays a large role in how you interact and communicate with others. If you're like most people (80% to be exact!), your inner self-talk is filled with negative, harmful thoughts. In this episode of the podcast, Executive Education faculty and executive coach Karen Collins helps you learn how to let go of this disruptive thought pattern. She explains three common thinking traps and walks through an alternative approach to trade in your harmful inner dialogue for a more helpful one.

By becoming aware of these traps, we gain the power to identify them when they arise and take necessary steps to break free from their grip. Thinking traps, also known as cognitive distortions, have the potential to foster negative emotions, heightened stress levels, and unproductive behaviors. Addressing these traps not only improves our decision-making skills, but also nurtures our emotional well-being and cultivates a sense of serenity in our lives. During the discussion, we explore several common thinking traps, including black and white thinking, overgeneralization, mental filtering, and discounting the positive. It is important to emphasize that experiencing these traps is normal, but recognizing them prevents us from getting entangled in detrimental thought patterns. By acknowledging the subtle nuances between black and white, and celebrating the positive moments in life, we can liberate ourselves from the clutches of thinking traps and lead a more balanced existence. At another point in the conversation, we dive deep into different types of cognitive distortions and thought traps that contribute to anxiety. Such traps encompass jumping to conclusions, mind reading, fortune telling, emotional reasoning, should statements, labeling, personalization, catastrophizing, blaming, control fallacies, the fallacy of change, and the fallacy of fairness. I urge listeners to develop awareness around these thought traps and actively challenge them by seeking objective evidence, recognizing personal roles and broader contexts, and acknowledging the unavoidable reality that life is not always fair. Take note of any thinking traps that may arise within yourself and understand their significance. Recognizing these traps is essential as they hold great influence over our thought patterns. By acknowledging their existence, cultivating awareness, and questioning their validity, we can attain a more balanced and rational mindset in our daily lives. This mindset fosters emotional well-being, enhances decision-making abilities, and promotes a sense of stability and equilibrium that helps us navigate the challenges life throws our way. Thinking traps, also known as cognitive distortions, have the potential to influence our thoughts and lead to biased thinking if we are not mindful of them. There are several factors that can make us more susceptible to falling into these thinking traps, such as experiencing stressful events or negative experiences in our lives. Additionally, having low self-esteem, engaging in social comparison, being a perfectionist, and having conflicts in our relationships can all contribute to the development of these patterns. We must also consider the role that chronic pain or illness, personal biases, trauma, past experiences, and lack of self-awareness can play in fostering thinking traps. It is important to note that thinking traps are common and not something to be ashamed of. The goal is not to eliminate them entirely, but rather to become cognizant of when they occur and develop strategies to challenge and reframe them. There are various practices that can be helpful in addressing and reducing the impact of thinking traps, such as mindfulness, journaling, self-reflection, and reading inspirational books. By incorporating these practices into our lives, we become more adept at recognizing and working with our thinking traps, which in turn allows us to decrease stress and emotional distress. When we become aware of our thinking traps and actively work with them, we can begin to reduce the triggers that lead to anxiety and gain a better understanding of our personal cognitive patterns. Writing down our thoughts or voicing them to someone else aids in the identification of these traps, making it easier for us to recognize the situations or beliefs that trigger our anxiety. It is easy to get into negative thought patterns when you make a mistake at work. We are frequently our worst critic, and those thoughts spiral during tough times. Our brains have a negativity bias where it takes three positive thoughts or experiences to outweigh a single negative one. This tendency is called cognitive distortion, and the thinking traps it leads to manifest in various ways, including:• Overgeneralization: Extrapolating one mistake to mean you are mistake prone• Me/Them Trap: Either blaming yourself or someone else entirely for a problem• Mind Reading: Assuming someone is thinking negatively about you without evidenceOn today's episode of Find Your Niche: A Career Podcast, host Lori Cole discusses the strategizes for avoiding thinking traps with Jacob Goldstein, Executive Director for Leadership and Organizational Development at the Leadership Laboratory. Goldstein speaks to Fortune 500 companies about creating positive mental health outcomes and how leaders can create a culture of psychological safety for their employees.Enjoy the full episode, and be sure to subscribe to Find Your Niche wherever you listen to podcasts for more career advice!

Episode Introduction: It's time to challenge your stinking thinking. Tune in to find out how! Episode Summary: In today's episode of the Rise Station Podcast, Prunella Harris walks us through 10 different stinking thinking traps and how we can acknowledge as well as challenge them to create a more positive life for ourselves. Mind Reading. Making Predictions. Emotional Reasoning. Shoulds & Musts. Over Generalizations. How to challenge your stinking thinking habits: Focus on celebrating your uniqueness. Learn to agree to disagree to handle judgments. Remember that people and situations can have both good and negative sides in co-existence. Have the self-awareness to know when you're filtering a person's behavior based on your own bias. Instead of thinking about the worst-case scenario, look at the past evidence. Consider looking at the situation in a more balanced manner. Thinking about the likelihood of a predicted situation actually happening. Remember that your emotions are your feelings, not facts. “Acceptance is the full embrace of our personal experience…it's choosing to feel with openness and curiosity, so that you can live the kind of life you want to live while inviting your feelings to come along for the ride” - Stephen Hayes This podcast is about the power of dealing with negative thoughts and emotions more obliquely. It's about a central shift from focusing on what you think and feel to how you relate to what you think and feel. Its effectiveness is somewhat paradoxical because struggling to stop or change a thought or emotion can have the opposite effect - and compound the problem. My guest is Dr. Steven Hayes. Dr. Hayes is a Nevada foundation professor of psychology in the behavior analysis program at the University of Nevada. He's an author of 46 books in nearly 675 scientific articles. His TEDx talks and blogs have been viewed or read by over 3 million people he has ranked among the most cited psychologists in the world. He's especially known for his work on acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT, which is one of the most widely used and researched new methods of psychological intervention over the last 20 years. Steven has received the lifetime achievement award from the association for behavioral and cognitive therapy and his popular book, Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: was #1 bestseller, and his new book, which is also discussed on the podcast. A Liberated Mind: How to Pivot Toward What Matters has been recently released to white acclaim. Some of the topics we cover. Current depression rates and the impact of the pandemic What he thinks is exasperating depression and anxiety in the U.S. The differences between sadness and depression How our brains and emotions can often work against us How automatic and complicated our thinking processes are ACT and process-based therapy, and the challenge of a purely cognitive model What is relational thinking The problem with treating negative thoughts as problems How we can relate to our thoughts to create space from being caught up in them What is diffusion and techniques to apply it For show notes and more, visit www.larryweeks.com
