Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of The Anchored by the Sword Podcast. I am so excited about today's conversation—because this one truly felt like a God-ordained connection.Today, I'm sitting down with Kim Oswalt, and you guys… her story is such a beautiful reminder that when God calls you into something, He doesn't leave you to figure it out alone. We talk about what it looks like to:Say “yes” to God—even when you feel unqualifiedWalk through fear (especially the fear of failure)Step into obedience before you feel readyAnd discover that you were actually made for more all alongKim shares her journey of coming to faith as a teenager, walking through years of growth, and then—years later—feeling God nudge her to write a book… even though she had never written anything before. And I love this part—because I know so many of us can relate:

How the Heck Should We Pray? | Addison Bevere | Episode 413

Confessions Of A Crappy Christian Podcast

In this powerful and practical conversation, I sat down with Addison Bevere to unpack one of the most common struggles in the Christian life: prayer. If you've ever felt like you're "bad at prayer," distracted, or unsure what to say, this episode meets you right there and gently reframes everything. You're Not the Only One Struggling Here's a surprising truth: Nearly 98% of Christians feel like they're bad at prayer Many compare themselves to others and feel inadequate The enemy uses that insecurity to isolate and discourage Addison shares that even growing up in a spiritually strong family, he felt like he didn't measure up. His journey into understanding prayer began from a place of deficiency, not mastery. Prayer Isn't Performance, It's Participation One of the biggest mindset shifts: Prayer is not a performance. It's not about saying the right words. It's not about praying long enough. Instead, prayer is: A relationship A posture of surrender A way of participating in what God is already doing "Prayer is not a religious exercise. It's how we participate in what is most real." This reframing alone can free you from pressure and invite you into something much deeper. The Real Problem: Self-Reliance Many of us approach prayer like this: "God, tell me what to do so I can go do it." But that mindset removes relationship. Instead of walking with God, we try to: Get answers Stay in control Avoid making mistakes This leads to: Anxiety Analysis paralysis Fear of doing the "wrong" thing But God's design is different. Faith Looks Like Movement A powerful biblical principle: "We will obey, and we will hear." (Exodus 24:7) In other words: You don't always get clarity first You take a step in faith Then God guides you along the way This removes the pressure of perfection and invites trust. God Is Not Waiting to Condemn You A core belief that needs to change: God is not looking for a reason to punish you. He is more invested in your life than you are. This matters because so many people: Avoid prayer out of shame Feel like they've already failed Believe God is distant or disappointed But Scripture tells a different story. "There is now no condemnation…" (Romans 8:1) Prayer is not where you're judged, it's where you're restored. Why Mornings Matter So Much One of the most practical takeaways is about how you start your day. Your brain is most receptive: Right when you wake up Before distractions take over But most people: Grab their phone within minutes Flood their mind with noise, stress, and comparison This shapes your entire day. Instead, consider: Staying off your phone for at least 30–60 minutes Sitting quietly with God Letting your mind and spirit settle This creates space to: Hear more clearly Receive rather than react Start from peace instead of pressure The Power of Stillness You don't need a perfect routine. Sometimes prayer looks like: Sitting quietly Lying still Letting thoughts surface Simply being aware of God's presence Even small moments of stillness can: Bring clarity Reveal truth Calm your mind A Simple Way to Start Praying If you don't know what to say, start here: 1. The Lord's Prayer (Slowly) Take it line by line: Reflect on each phrase Let it guide your thoughts Don't rush it 2. A Simple Prayer: "I Am Here" This three-word prayer is powerful: I am, I am present Here, I'm not in the past or future With God, I acknowledge His presence It centers you in: The moment The relationship The surrender Repentance Is a Gift Repentance isn't about shame, it's about freedom. It means: Turning away from self-reliance Returning to God Receiving grace again It's not a one-time event, it's a daily invitation. Prayer Changes How You Live As you grow in prayer, you'll notice: More clarity Less anxiety Greater awareness of God Increased sensitivity to others You begin to: Respond instead of react Listen instead of strive Walk with God instead of chasing answers Final Takeaway You don't need to: Be perfect Say the right words Have it all figured out You just need to: Slow down Show up Stay present Prayer isn't about doing more. It's about being with God. And that changes everything. A pure heart brings clarity, peace, and a deeper connection with God, as reflected in Psalm 51:10. Spiritual renewal isn’t about restriction—it’s about experiencing the freedom and joy that come from living in alignment with God’s design. This devotional compares spiritual growth to cleaning a home: it may feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s necessary for health and peace. When we invite God to remove unhealthy attitudes and behaviors, He doesn’t just clean us up—He renews us from within. Purity isn’t a burden to carry; it’s a gift that allows us to see God more clearly and live with greater focus, stability, and joy in everyday life. Highlights Spiritual “cleaning” is essential for a healthy, thriving faith God actively helps renew your heart—you’re not doing it alone Holiness is a blessing that protects, not a burden that restricts A pure heart leads to clarity, peace, and deeper connection with God Letting go of sin creates space for joy and spiritual growth Consistent renewal builds a steadfast, focused spirit Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: A Pure Heart Is a BlessingBy: Whitney Hopler Bible Reading:“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10, NIV Every year when I spring clean my home physically, I ask God to help me do spiritual spring cleaning – to clean up my soul. When I clean my home regularly throughout the year, I also often pray for God’s help to get rid of messy attitudes or behaviors, and to blow the fresh air of renewal into my life. It definitely feels like a chore to do physical cleaning. Getting rid of trash, mopping floors, washing windows, and all the other boring and dirty tasks involved in cleaning a house aren’t pleasant. But they’re necessary for living a physically healthy life. It can also feel like a chore to do spiritual cleaning, because it’s stressful to confess unhealthy attitudes and behaviors and to try to make better choices. However, it’s necessary to be spiritually healthy. Unlike with physical cleaning, I have help from God for spiritual cleaning, and that makes all the difference. I’m grateful that I can always succeed with spiritual cleaning – and even enjoy the process of it – because God is always willing to create more purity in my heart and to renew my spirit. Psalm 51:10 is a powerful prayer we can use to ask God to change our hearts for the better. When we’re willing to let God into the messy corners of our lives, he’ll remove the dirt that’s accumulated there and send us fresh help to grow in holiness. When we think about holiness, we may worry that pursuing it will be a chore that will restrict us from having fun or keep us working hard to reach a standard we can never achieve. But God wants us to live holy lives because doing so is truly good for us, and God will help us every step of the way. God wants us to have pure hearts because purity is a blessing, not a burden. God’s commandments for healthy and holy living are actually loving boundaries that protect us from being harmed by sin. Praying for a pure heart invites God to wipe away the dirt of sin from our souls so we can see God more clearly. As Jesus says in Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” The reward of purity is experiencing God! A pure heart helps us focus on what really matters most, so we’re not stressed and exhausted from being pulled in many different directions. It helps us realize that God’s ways aren’t meant to restrict us, but to free us to live in ways that help us notice and appreciate the wonder of God’s work in our lives every day. By living each day with a pure heart, we can stay focused on God and enjoy the blessings that God is constantly pouring into our lives. Developing a lifestyle of greater purity is like decluttering a messy room. At first, it might feel hard to let go of certain things. But as the room clears, we realize how stressful it really was to deal with so much clutter. We feel more peaceful in the room, because it’s a healthier space. When we let God help us clean up spiritually, we’ll also notice less stress and more peace in our lives. We’ll have the “steadfast spirit” that Psalm 51:10 mentions – a spirit that’s stronger and more focused, so we’re no longer tossed around by every temptation to sin that comes our way. A pure heart is a blessing, not a chore. It’s the gift of a heart at peace, because it’s the way God designed it to be: clean and whole! Intersecting Faith & Life: As you consider how it’s a blessing to have a pure heart, reflect on these questions: When you think of the word “holiness,” does it feel like a heavy burden or a beautiful invitation? Why do you think that is? Is there a specific kind of mess in your life right now (an unhealthy attitude or behavior) that’s making it hard for you to feel close to God? In Psalm 51:10, King David asks God to renew a “steadfast spirit” within him. In what areas of your faith do you feel most inconsistent right now? How can you ask God for help and rely on that help to be more steadfast in those areas? How do you want to change your life overall, with God’s help, to live with greater purity and holiness? What’s one small yet significant change you can start making right now to live with more purity in your heart every day? Welcome to another transformative episode of the Daily Living for Christ podcast! Today, we take a deeper look at The Four Consents—a powerful framework for embracing humility, surrender, and divine union with God. These four consents—Life and Creation, Growth and Development, Limitation and Diminishment, and Transformation and Union—offer us a path to living freely in God's love, apart from striving or self-reliance.What does it mean to truly say yes to God? How does humility free us from both pride and despair? Through biblical insights, the wisdom of The Cloud of Unknowing, and Jesus' example of self-emptying (kenosis), we uncover how consenting to God's presence and action in our lives is the very definition of true humility. In this episode, we'll explore:✅ Consent to Life and Creation—Accepting that we are loved and redeemed by grace, not by effort✅ Consent to Growth and Development—Trusting God's work within us rather than striving for self-perfection✅ Consent to Limitation and Diminishment—Releasing control and embracing the freedom of surrender✅ Consent to Transformation and Union with God—Letting go of all that separates us from divine loveJesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29). The Four Consents reveal that His yoke is light because it is not about our effort, but our surrender. Are you ready to step into a deeper, freer, and more intimate walk with Christ? Life is filled with uncertainty, yet, whatever a new year brings, we can find strength and even joy through trust in God. This latest podcast episode talks about the determined decision to trust Him no matter what happens in life. Let's look at biblical insights from Isaiah 12:2  - - - continuing our "I WILLS to INSTILL" conversations. Listen in on this episode, then spend a few moments in personal devotions with this conversation guide.******“I WILLS TO INSTILL” - Convo #2:  I Will Trust God“Indeed, God is my salvation; I will trust him and not be afraid, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2 CSBSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! A new year is filled with knowns and unknowns. And, while we can make plans, we can't choose everything about our lives. What we can choose is our mindset for living. Let's see how Isaiah 12:2 encourages us to say “I Will Trust God.”  WHAT:  What is God saying through this Scripture? This verse is about at least two things:  God's character and our response. God tells us He is entirely capable of being our salvation, strength and song. He won't force these gifts upon us, though. Instead He lets us choose what we will do with all He offers us. ~ Have you accepted God's gift of salvation? If so, are you living by His strength or your own?  WHY:  Why does this Scripture matter? We have a daily choice:  to live with fear and anxiety, or to trust God with our lives. God's Word promises, “The one who trusts in the Lord will be happy,” (Proverbs 16:20b). You can know if you're trusting God by examining whether stress or a song is echoing through your heart. ~ What do you need to trust God about today? How can trusting God lead to happiness? When you experience an unhelpful thought or emotion, how can you trust God with it? HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? Trusting God means that, no matter what happens, we choose to rely on His character and promises. This determined decision echoes the verse, “In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid.” (Psalm 56:4 CSB). ~ How can you praise God when you're going through something hard? How are you actively letting go of fear so you can hold onto trusting God's character and promises?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! A person who really, truly trusts God won't be afraid to speak up about it. Jesus said, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises. And again, ‘I will put my trust in him.'” (Hebrews 2:12-13a NIV). We can follow Jesus' example and “Speak Him” to all those watching our lives. Who is watching you, and will you speak about your trust in Him today?© 2024 Tosha Lamdin Williams ______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. Do you ever wonder where the thoughts in your head come from? Ever feel like, “That’s not me.” Maybe it isn’t you. The Bible tells us to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. Then, prayer is a two-way street. God invites us to come to Him with our requests. And God also speaks to us in prayer. Are you listening? More importantly, are you obeying? Sarah had crossed an ocean for just this moment, to share Jesus with Muslim women. Sitting across the table from Sarah in the café was Maya a Muslim woman who had never heard about Jesus. And what God did next is what he’s preparing you to do! Last, when Shawna was walking the streets of the red-light district in South Asia she was tempted to feel afraid of the darkness. Instead, she saw the impact of the light shining through her to others. God’s light shines through you where you walk today!Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we are starting a new message series called, Why God? There are common questions we tend to ask. If you don't have a very good answer, then it can be a struggle to trust God. It's natural to try to figure out WHY. What is the source? We tend to think there's just once source. Either it's God. Or it was my own fault. Or it was the devil. Rather than it being simply this or that, many times there's numerous factors rolled together. There are different layers, like an onion. The Bible is God's Word to us, and it provides greater insight.

Today we get to hear a story about how God used His discipline to bring a man back to Him. We are talking with our friend Kevin Wilkinson. Kevin's story starts in Michigan where he came to know Christ at the age of 12 after his father who was an alcoholic was radically saved from that life and placed his faith in Jesus. This had a ripple effect on the family and the remainder of Kevin's growing-up years were spent being involved in church. Kevin was heavily involved in sports, playing baseball, basketball and football and eventually got a baseball scholarship to Kansas State University in 1969. He married a week after graduating and began a career in the travel industry. Kevin slowly began climbing the ladder of success and that was a feeling that he began to chase. He struggled to healthily handle the recognition and praise he was receiving and before he knew it his identity was placed in his work and achievements. Kevin eventually started his own business that was centered around youth sports tournaments but behind the scenes his marriage, relationship with his kids and relationship with God were struggling. Then almost out of the blue everything came crashing down and Kevin lost everything. In Kevin's words, God was using discipline to bring him back to where he needed to be - in the arms of the Father, releasing control. We so appreciate Kevin's humbleness and willingness to share about how the discipline of God ultimately brought restoration and healing. Kevin saw that he needed to engage with God in order to let go of control and let the Lord work in his life to repair and restore what had been lost.Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? Needless to say these are crazy times. Many of us could have the question of, "Why is God letting this happen?" Today we address this question and what we as entrepreneurs are called to do about what is happening. These are hard conversations, but they need to be had and heard. We have been given the gift of dreaming. Every entrepreneur has one, but so does every person we are called to work with. We are ready to lead by example so that the hope that has been anchored in us doesn't not fade. I hope this episode blesses you.

When our life is not going the way we planned, we use words like disturbing, unsettled or chaotic. The question we all tend to ask is “why?” After we ask why for a while and the situation doesn’t improve, we tend to add to the question… “why, God?” This usually leads us to one of three age-old theories. 1) God must be angry. 2) He didn’t stop it because he cant. 3) He just doesn’t really care about me. Maybe what you’re experiencing in this moment is the providence of God. This is a deeply theological, difficult situation to fully comprehend and requires a tremendous amount of faith. We prefer control over providence. We think when God doesn’t seem to be hearing us, we can take control, and make things better than He can. This typically leads to a line of unhealthy choices. However, it is in the crisis spaces of our lives, He does his best work. In life, crisis is normal, through crisis we get to see how fit our faith is. Speaker: Pastor Scott Stevens

I've known Carlos Kulas-Dominguez for YEARS but never knew about the event that changed his life until he shared with me just recently! His story of healing, hope and forgiveness is so inspiring and deserves to be shouted from the roof tops! His journey begins as a child growing up in inner-city Detroit surrounded by violence, gangs and drugs...yet striving for a better life, setting goals and achieving them. Eventually, feelings of invincibility set in and he acquired a "larger than life" mentality. That is, until something devastating shook his world and changed the trajectory of his life. Through the healing process, he uncovered layer upon layer needing repair in his quest for total health and wholeness. If you are in a place where you feel invincible (everything is going well, you are serving and doing good things, you are accomplishing things you set out to do) and yet you still feel a sense of emptiness, today's episode will not disappoint. Carlos will share how the following principles may help you in recovery as it did for him: ~Admitting you are powerless and surrendering your will to God ~Letting go of vices that hide your insecurities and begin working on deeper issues ~Learning to live outside of your comfort zone to truly receive the help you need ~Finding a place where you can relate to others in the same struggle, yet challenge yourself to change If his story has touched your life, please feel free to reach out and "friend" Carlos Kulas-Dominguez on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=686625975). He is an amazing person and would love to continue to be an encouragement to you!
