The Zone of Interest focuses on the lives of people who ran the concentration camps, as they chose to avoid thinking about their crimes against humanity. A film adaptation received Oscar nominations a couple of years ago. Novelist and essayist Martin Amis died of cancer on May 19, 2023 at the age of 73, leaving behind such novels as The Rachel Papers, London Fields, The Information, and his last memoir-cum-novel, Inside Story. A Valentine's Day release with two incredible artists, Jody Reynard and David Bushman!  Immensely talented and incredibly humble, our guests this week talk about the road to Broadway for each of them.  JODY REYNARD has been dancing non-stop for almost 30 years!!  He has taught musical theatre/Broadway dance classes at dance studios, intensives and educational institutions around the country.  He attended the Cobb Center Excellence for in the Performing Arts outside of Atlanta, GA and graduated with a dance major.  He then earned a BA in Theatre with Music minor from Kennesaw State University (where he also helped to establish the first dance ensemble, Wings) all while performing with The Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern, The Atlanta Opera and Georgia Ballet.  From there, his regional theatre career began with dancing roles in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, On the Twentieth Century at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT and Mame at the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ.  Soon thereafter he caught the eye of the late Ann Reinking at an open audition and made his Broadway debut in Fosse, dancing featured specialties such as “From the Edge,” “Rich Man's Frug,” and the “Take Off with Us” adage.  Other credits include the Broadway companies of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, Legally Blonde, Taboo, Saturday Night Fever and the national touring companies of Camelot, Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, Memphis and Chicago.  He served as swing and dance captain for the new musical, Roman Holiday, in its pre-Broadway tryout at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, CA.   Jody has worked as an assistant choreographer for Denis Jones, Josh Prince, Alex Sanchez and Darren Lee.  He can also be seen dancing behind six-time Tony Award winner, Audra McDonald, in the movie musical, Hello Again! Some of his favorite roles include Darren in Take Me Out, Paul Happiness in Thoughts of a Colored Man, Ken in Smokey Joe's Café, featured dancer with the NY Philharmonic, Omaha Symphony & South Dakota Symphony Orchestras AND substitute instructor of jazz & tap at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY.  Jody is also a proud Core Company Member of Quick Silver Theatre Company.DAVID BUSHMAN began his professional career in classical and contemporary ballet. He received a BFA in Dance from University of North Carolina School of the Arts.  While still studying there, David was asked to join the professional company, North Carolina Dance Theatre (NCDT, now known as Ballet Charlotte).  He traveled the country with NCDT and danced leading roles in works by the great George Balanchine and the company's director, Salvatore Aiello.  He was then invited to audition for FeldBallets/NY (now known as Ballet Tech) and was hired into the company. For the next three years, he was featured in the vast repertoire of Eliot Feld.  David then went on to dance for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, Canada.  There, he danced works by renowned choreographers Jiri Kylian, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin and many others. Since retiring from concert dance, David has been associated with the hit revival of CHICAGO since 2003.  He performed in the first French speaking productions, in Montreal and Paris, and the US National/International touring company. Itamar Moses, playwright and librettist for “The Band's Visit,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded January 10, 2022. Itamar Moses has written several plays, including “Yellowjackets,” which was performed in 2008 at Berkeley Rep, and the books for three musicals. He won a Tony Award for “The Band's Visit,” which plays at BroadwaySF‘s Golden Gate Theater through February 6, 2021. Raised in Berkeley (and his parents kept the radio tuned to KPFA), Itamar Moses attended Yale and the Tisch School at NYU. Along with his work as a playwright, he served in the writing room for Men of a Certain Age, Boardwalk Empire and The Affair. In this interview, he discusses, in depth, the creation of “The Band's Visit,” and takes us to the writing room of Boardwalk Empire. He also discusses his other work and his career path as a playwright. The interview concludes with his views on diversity in theater and his own work through the pandemic. On this episode I’m talking to actor and singer Andrew Kober who was part of the cast of the 2014 Broadway Revival of Les Miserables. On Broadway, he has been seen in the Tony-winning 2009 Revival of Hair, as well as Les Miserables, She Loves Me, Sunday in the Park with George, School of Rock, and, most recently, Beautiful. Andrew also performed on London’s West End with Hair, and in the First National Tour of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He is a graduate of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama. Regionally, Andrew has worked all over the United States at theaters including MCC, The Williamstown Theater Festival, New York Theatre Workshop, Yale Rep, The Paper Mill Playhouse, the Berkshire Theater Festival, the Denver Center Theater Company, The Old Globe, The Golden Gate Theater, Buck’s County Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, and more. He has also spent four summers performing at Shakespeare in the Park, including playing Malvolio in Twelfth Night this past summer, in which the New York Times compared him to a young John Cleese. On television, he has appeared in “Boardwalk Empire” (HBO), “Pan Am” (ABC), “Blue Bloods” (CBS), “House of Cards” (HBO), “Ray Donovan” (Showtime), “Fosse/Verdon” (FX Network), “The Plot Against America” (HBO), and he’ll be seen in the upcoming third season of “Pose" (FX Network). He has also been seen in a national television commercial for Radio Shack and numerous web series. His voice work can be heard in numerous commercials on TV and radio. In addition to his Broadway and solo work, he keeps a busy calendar of concert appearances. With his writing and performing partners, Alex Brightman, Drew Gasparini, and F. By Davy Crockett  Both a podcast episode and a full article On May 10, 2019, America will celebrated the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad. This is the third article in a series to recognize some historic accomplishments walking or running across the American continent. In the previous articles, the history was given of the 1855 walk across South America by Nathaniel Holmes Bishop, and the story of Dakota Bob was shared as an a example of the many fraudulent characters who would claim to walk across America. Women got into the game too! The most famous of the transcontinental woman walkers of the late 1800s, and perhaps the first, was a Spanish-American world-famous actress, Zoe Gayton. The may have also been the first person to walk the history transcontinental railroad end-to-end. Here is her amazing story of her walk in 1890-91. Zorika Gaytoni Lopez Ares “Zoe Gayton,” was born in about 1854, in Madrid, Spain. When she was about four years old, her father became a political exiled immigrant and they came to New York City. Zoe Gayton started performing in the theater at the early age of 14 in Tennessee and then joined a company in New York City. Zoe Gayton married at about 18 years old, to famous rich man, John H. Church, who was the owner of the Golden Gate Theater in Oakland, California. He had many wives, some at the same time. Zoe toured with him to South America. They lived in Utah for a time, building the first hotel in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah (location now of Alta and Snowbird ski resorts). They divorced in 1873 and Zoe then went through a series of other marriages as she continued to perform. She later joined companies in the west, performed in many places, and took a company to perform in Hawaii. Mazeppa Zoe Gayton became a world-known “equestrian actress impersonator” who traveled performing a four-act play based on a legendary poem, “Mazeppa” by Lord Byron. In the plot, Zoe played the male character Mazeppa, a horseman and page for a Polish Count. When Mazeppa is caught in an affair with the Countess, he is tied naked to a steed and set loose. The terrifying scene is the play is when Zoe is bound to a horse in scant clothing and rides on planks to the theater’s ceiling. It was much like a circus act. One newspaper described it this way, Zoe “is strapped to the side of her ‘barbed steed' and ascends the precipitous ‘runs’ to the ‘flies’ in the roof of the theater. It is a very exciting scene, and never fails to elicit tumultuous applause from the audience.” Another paper wrote, “Besides possessing a clear and pleasing voice, she has a splendid physique and graceful movement.” In 1882 Zoe Gayton performed “Mazeppa” in England at Queen Victoria’s New Royal Theatre. As she was touring, Zoe was arrested for stealing things at a boarding house where she was staying with her manager William J. Marshall. She took ten table clothes, a silk-velvet cape, a shawl, an umbrella, a lace scarf, and other items. They were found in her possession, she was convicted and sentenced to four months in prison. In 1883 she was back touring in the United States in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, New Orleans, and Alabama. In 1884 in deep financial trouble, after performing in Alabama, she raffled off her famous performing white Arabian steed, “Gypsy” to raise money to pay off debts when her theater company “went to pieces.” In 1885 she was performing with a new steed, “Fearless.” Zoe had performed all over the world including England, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, Australia, India, Peru and all over America. But her years of success playing Mazeppa finally came crashing down. In 1885 her company was bankrupted performing in Kansas and her personal luggage was sold off to pay debts. In 1886 Zoe was traveling and performing again but in a new roles as Leah in Jewish play, "Leah, the Forsaken," and in another play, a military drama, “The French Spy.
