Golden Harper co-founded Altra Running, renowned for its innovative zero-drop shoes, promoting natural foot movement and reducing injuries. We are a barefoot family and love our barefoot sandals, but when it comes to running on manmade structures, we need some cushion, and Harper has created a great shoe for runners with natural feet. Our curiosity led us to invite him as a guest to determine where that passion originated. We love people who are passionate about changing the world and creating their own paths. And Golden Harper has done both.Harper was raised in a family of runners in Orem, Utah, and grew up working in his family's running store. An All-American Cross-Country runner, he holds the world-best marathon time for a 12-year-old at 2:45:34. Harper graduated with a degree in Exercise Science, focusing his collegiate studies on running technique and injuries. After stepping away from Altra, Golden Harper continued his mission to help runners improve their form and reduce injuries. His latest project is the FloatRun Harness, a simple tool that acts like a form coach, promoting efficient, low-impact running form. It encourages compact arms, tall posture, higher cadence, and proper footstrike. In this episode, we discuss the intricacies of foot health, the joys of trail running and forest bathing, and the 'float running' technique designed to minimize impact and enhance enjoyment. We explore the benefits of barefoot running, minimal footwear, and the evolution of running shoe technology. Harper shares insights from his entrepreneurial journey and emphasizes maintaining natural movement and proper running form.

Gear. He is a foot health, footwear, and running biomechanics expert with several decades of hands-on experience working in these fields. Golden studied Exercise Science at two Universities, where he was particularly focused on biomechanics, kinematics, and coaching.  During this time, he authored several research articles on running-related injuries and running technique.  Golden grew up in the footwear industry, with his Dad working for Nike and Saucony most of his childhood, and his mother being a sponsored athlete as well. His family opened a walking and running specialty store when Golden was 9, and he started working there right away. He began managing the store between high school and college, and came to the realization that when it came to footwear, most of what they were doing was not effective or scientifically based. Given that nearly all shoe store ‘training' is propaganda from shoe companies, Golden set out to do the ‘Foot Health and Running Injury Major' in college. Between the ages of 10 and 14, Golden ran 5 marathons, debuting with a State Record 3:08 performance.  He followed that up with a 2:57 performance that was good for a National Best for age 11.  At age 12, he ran the St. George Marathon in 2:45, setting a world best. He went on to win 2 Cross Country State Championships and became a Cross Country All-American when he and several others all broke the previous national championship record at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships. His Senior year of college, Golden nearly went undefeated at collegiate distance Cross Country races. Golden has run professionally after college, winning Ultra-marathons and many mountain races. He is a downhill specialist and holds descent records on mountains all over the rockies, including Mt. Timpanogos in Utah and over a dozen 14ers in Colorado. Hey everyone, welcome back to The Outdoor Biz podcast and Episode 406. Today, I'm talking with Brian Beckstead, Co-founder of Altra Footwear. After 11 years in the run and outdoor specialty retail space, Brian worked to create Altra Footwear with Golden Harper. He then worked to finalize and transition of Altra from ICON Health and Fitness to the VF Corporation. Brian currently focuses on Strategic Projects and PR. And so we coined the term somehow it came up with, we coined the term zero drop. That was our, that was our concept. And so that was something that, uh, with the ultra brand we still use to this day is zero drop [19:55:09] I had the CEO of ICON, our ownership group, pulled me in one day and he said, Hey, Brian, you know, we really want to take ultra to the moon. We want you guys to be as big as you possibly can. And he said, we are, uh, we're looking at some investment groups, uh, for Altra. And I was like, what investment groups are you selling us? Like, well, not necessarily. Like we're going to be meeting with some people over the next two weeks. And I ended up meeting with VF a week later, not even knowing that my company was up for sale as founder and president of the president at the time. So it was a bit of a shock. We were not prepared for that acquisition [00:14:29] We all had different roles, but we helped each other in every aspect of the business. One of the best ways to support #cleansport is to buy products from companies that have signed the Clean Sport pledge. Altra Running is one of those companies.  In this episode, Shanna and Kara interview Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead. Brian shares the story of how Altra was born from his entry into the sport by following the footsteps of his older sisters to meeting his co-founder Golden Harper on the first day of high school cross-country. He and Golden went on to work together in a specialty running store where they began to modify shoes at home to balance the cushioning and provide more room for the toes to splay in the forefoot. They then tried to give their ideas away for free to established shoe companies at the time, who wouldn't listen or who ridiculed their ideas in some cases.  With no one responding, they decided to just build the shoes themselves and Altra Running was born. Brian gives several of the behind-the-scenes stories in the roller coaster journey that led Altra to be the success story it is today, including the spiritual moment near the end of a 100-mile race when he realized that the company was going to make it. Finally, Brian talks about what companies like Altra can do to support clean sport including the creative ways they are choosing to sponsor clean athletes and build the running community in grassroots ways. The fight for clean sport needs more companies like Altra to step up and set the tone with a zero tolerance policy for doping. Thank you to Brian and the full team at Altra for doing their part.

This week's episode features Golden Harper, the founder of Altra, a footwear and apparel company, based in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. Between the ages of 10 and 14, Golden ran in five marathons. When he was 12, he ran the St. George (Utah) Marathon in 2:45:34 – a world’s best for that age. He started working in his family’s specialty running store at age nine. The experience allowed him to learn about a range of running injuries and how to prevent or minimize them. Later, Golden graduated from Brigham University with a degree in Exercise Science. His studies focused on biomechanics, kinematics, running injuries, and coaching. He learned 2 game changing things from his studies. The first is that the tapered toe box and elevated heel of nearly all modern shoes causes virtually all of our chronic foot problems. Secondarily, running injury rates are higher now than they were before modern running shoes, likely due to the fact that the elevated, heavy heel in all running shoes causes people to run in a way humans have never naturally ran. Altra footwear came about after Golden developed what he calls the first-ever foot-shaped running shoes with balanced cushioning. In a shoe with balanced cushioning, the cushioning is weight balanced front to back and does not drop from the heel down to the forefoot, as it does in nearly all traditional shoes. Golden began to modify existing shoes that were sold at his store and collected data showing that customers improved their technique and were less had far less injuries when they wore the modified shoes, compared to traditional shoes. The modifications helped greatly, he determined. He showed his collected data to the big running-shoe companies, but it was to no avail. The path forward was clear. Golden and his cohorts partnered with shoemaking experts and the next thing they knew, they were a million dollars in debt.  Through extreme pers   Life’s tough – you can be tougher, like Golden Harper, a lifetime running enthusiast who wasn’t satisfied with “what is” when it came to running shoes. He wanted “what could be.”

Golden Harper grew up around running. Working at the running store his father opened in the Utah mountains from a young age, the track athlete and marathon fanatic was able to share his passion for the sport with customers of all experience levels. He also saw his fair share of clientele with severe foot problems. After years of studying body mechanics and exercise science in college, the entrepreneur manufactured a pair of sneakers that would stave off injury—the first pair of Altras. And Harper’s #hurdlemoment? That came right as he was taking a leap of faith to get the brand off the ground; a snowboard accident that left him in rough shape, temporarily unable to walk—nevertheless run. In episode 10, Harper shares how the experience made both him and his company stronger, and what exactly sets Altra apart from the other sneaker brands on the market. --- @altrarunning @rungolden1 @hurdlepodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hurdle/message

Recently, Scott had a friend ask him in a text, "what kind of running shoes should I buy?" Wow!  how do you answer that question with a short reply text?  One of the subjects that can monopolize a LONG training run or a ultra race is about shoes.  We all like to talk about them.  We all have our opinions and preferences.  And the stories.....we can recall races from years ago and vividly remember which shoe we ran in.  Some of us die a little when a manufacture discontinues or modifies our favorite shoes.  Who isn't guilty of going to the store and buying 5-6 pair of your favorites before they are gone? We get the unique opportunity to talk to Steven Shorter, a shoe designer for Altra Running.  He talks to us about how he became a shoe designer, the process of developing a new shoe, why shoes are always changing, some trends in running footwear...opening the curtain and giving us a sneak peak to some of the new Altra models. Make sure you listen to this podcast on a tempo run, because you might find your HR elevate a little. Our Podcast with Golden Harper, Altra Running founder.

Wonder why things are the way they are? Why brands settle for the status quo when there's obviously a better way? That's what Altra Running founder Golden Harper thought as he hacked and modified his running store customers' shoes to alleviate all types of pains. After selling thousands of altered shoes, he figured there was a market for foot-shaped, zero drop shoes, but Nike, adidas, nor any of the other big brands were interested in the tech. So he launched it himself, bringing key friends and angels on board to get the first production run going, then sold the entire copmany before the first shoe ever delivered. There are a ton of lessons here for anyone that things they've found a better way to do something! Tempo Runs Patrick Kelly submitted a question about tempo runs using the "Send Voicemail" on the right side of TriathleteTraining.com.  He was having difficulty hitting his goal tempo pace in a 10 mile run.  The run was designed to be a 2 mile warmup, 6 miles at 5:52, and a 2 mile cool down.  The basis for his run came from a Jack Daniel's article. I addressed the tempo run, the definition, and the reason he wasn't hitting his goal pace.  It lead me to create this more detailed article on the tempo run. Zero Drop Shoes UPDATE I cannot recommend Zero Drop shoes.  I had 3 pairs of the shoes and all wore through the outsole at around the 100 mile mark.  I inquired with the company. They sent me another pair to try and the same thing happened.  I notified Gold Harper two times via email of the problem on two occasions and he did not respond.  I called and emailed customer service multiple times. They were very nice and I was always told they would get back with me very soon.  Finally, 20 days after my first email with pictures (and after not returning phone calls), they gave this response without knowing anything about my gait: "If that is the case with those, it sounds like you are still heel striking. I recommend you shorten your stride or increase your cadence and that should prevent that from happening in the future." My cadence is around 90. This problem appears to be caused by the soft rubber used in the outsoles and I'm extremely disappointed in the product quality of Altra and their customer service.  I can't recommend their shoes.  xxx I recently consulted with an athlete who used Altra shoes.  As a result, I called the company to ask more questions.  The guy I reached on their support line was very helpful and knowledgable, and I followed up again, which resulted in an interview with Golden Harper, the company founder. He came up with the idea for the shoe while working in his family shoe store. He credits the use of high speed video video in 2009 in the development of his shoes.  The slow motion video helped him notice an unnatural gait caused by heavily cushioned shoes with a deep base.  Zero drop shoes was the answer to the running problems he was trying to fix. He coined the term, which means there is no drop from the heel of the shoe to the forefoot.   He discusses the benefits of zero drop shoes and their foot shaped toebox, as well as the biomechanics of a zero drop shoe compared to a traditional running shoe. It's a compelling story and I'm looking forward to trying a pair of Altras myself.  They are available in specialty running stores altrarunning.com. Subscribe via iTunes
