Running through the menopause transition can be challenging. If you feel like throwing in the towel sometimes, you're not alone. This week's guest, distance runner and blogger at runandbebrave.com has faced it all: injuries, setbacks, poor sleep, fatigue, vanishing motivation, hot flashes, and all the joint pain that accompanies the musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause. Through it all, she found a way to keep going, and she believes you can, too. She talks all about how this week.Normi Coto, PhD, is an English teacher by day and a writer by night. She writes about running, writing, prayer, rhetoric, and mindset. A runner since 1983, Normi ran through three pregnancies back when running was misunderstood almost as poorly as women's health. She has run 6 marathons, and is most proud of qualifying for Boston twice, running it once (2001), and finishing her first 50K ultramarathon in 2023 in Washington D.C. at the age of 54. Normi's PhD dissertation was Persuasion by Word of Foot: A Rhetorical-Ontological Inquiry into Barefoot Running as a Health Practice–a practice she has found helpful for resolving her own stubborn running injuries. 2024 was her hardest year yet when she ran straight into menopause. In this episode of Run with Fitpage, we have the Founder of Xero Shoes, Steven Sashen. Steven talks us through the journey of Xero Shoes, why zero-drop shoes are good for running, and a lot more with our host Vikas Singh. As Co-Founder and CEO, Steven Sashen is the visionary and marketer of Xero Shoes. Steven got back into sprinting after a 30-year break, at 45, and suffered repeated injuries over the next 2 years. When he ditched the shoes and started running barefoot, his gait changed, his injuries disappeared and he became a Masters All-American Sprinter – one of the fastest men his age in the US (now 60+). After fashioning his own huarache-style sandals, he started getting compliments from people around town. A natural entrepreneur, Steven and his wife, Lena Phoenix, launched Xero Shoes in 2009. They bootstrapped the business from home, and since then, Xero Shoes has grown to a multi-million dollar company with more than 38 shoes, boots, and sandals. The co-founders appeared on Shark Tank in 2013 and turned down a $400K investment, and Xero Shoes has been listed on the Inc. 5000 for six consecutive years.Prior to jumping into the footwear business, Steven was an internationally-known Internet marketing expert, Search Engine and Social Media marketing consultant, and software designer. He is the creator of Scriptware, the industry-standard word processor for film and TV writers. He also co-hosted the Emmy award-winning, internationally syndicated TV show, Disk Doctors. About Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. I have both, never understood the foot or those who choose a profession that is all about the foot. With that said, I understand the importance the feet play in our body and how we move about and it's why I reached out to Dr Steven Singh to come on the show for a chat all about feet. The feet, just like the tires of a car, are the part of your body that are always in contact with the ground and are what help you, jump, walk, run, crawl, climb and basically do everything you take for granted on a daily basis. There are 26 bones, 33 joints, 29 muscles and a host of tendons, ligaments and nerves that make up the foot and it was great to have Steven on the show to not only explain how they all work to allow us to do what we do, but to also dispel some myths and misconceptions around feet and footwear, as well as talking about gadgets that might one day propel us further or help us run faster. While I don't particularly like feet, I LOVED this chat and would like to thank Steven for coming on and sharing his love and vast knowledge on the topic. Caz is an anatomy & human movement expert specialising in fixing faulty movement patterns to alleviate chronic joint pain. Her own personal journey paired with her extensive knowledge inspired her to create a unique modality called The Gravity Technique. For many years Caz was a Yoga teacher, but was also frustrated with the level of knowledge she had at the time to help her clients with various injuries they'd come to her with. She embarked on a 10 year journey to dissect (literally) the body and learn about the fascinating world of fascia and anatomy in motion. She now teaches and coaches her fellow yoga & movement professionals (but also anyone keen to learn) to up-level their skills and help their clients (or themselves) on a whole new level and is on a mission to de-normalise the mindset that pain is just part of life. If there's one book that turned the running world on its head and inspired millions to pick up the sport, it has to be Born to Run. Christopher McDougall's first hand tale of drama and barefoot running included an unforgettable cast of characters like Caballo Blanco and Barefoot Ted set in a backdrop of mystery and danger in the Copper Canyon of Mexico. Runners everywhere cast aside traditional running shoes to run free like the sandal-wearing Tarahumara natives Chris chronicled. The book was incredibly impactful and many runners, a decade later, credit Born to Run with their running origin story, myself included. But the advice in the book isn't without controversy. Barefoot and minimalist running exploded in popularity in the early years after it was published, but has faded in appeal as many runners got hurt and moved back into more traditional shoes. High tech running shoes, with space age foam and carbon plates are on the feet of every elite runner and most of the pack behind them. But that doesn't mean that barefoot and minimalist running doesn't have its place, even with elite athletes. Christopher McDougall and his coach Eric Orton are back to explain how. Welcome to the Planted Runner. I'm Coach Claire Bartholic and my mission is to help you improve your running, your mindset, and your life with science-backed training and plant-based nutrition. In this episode, Chris and Eric teach some of the lessons in their new training book Born to Run 2. You'll learn: How training your feet is critical to running pain free Why fueling your runs with a traditional high carbohydrate diet might not be the best advice for health and longevity And the controversial chapter in the new book that they almost didn't add Don't forget to stay tuned all the way to the end for another Mental Strength Minute. The main training discussion is on a new study looking at 16,518 race results to determine whether uphill or downhill splits are the most important for race peformance. The results may shock you! Other topics: 5 pieces of running news (including doping and race lotteries), novel approaches to tapers, podcast stats, flopping in soccer, breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and what that means for authenticity, and much more! We also talk about the performance-enhancing properties of country music. Yes, we officially reversed our position on country-pop playlists! We apologize for our past errors. Human beings are distinctly weird. We live for a very long time after we stop reproducing, move completely differently than all of our closest relatives, lack the power of chimpanzees and other primates but completely outdo most other terrestrial mammals in a contest of endurance. If we think about bodies as hypotheses about the stable features of their ancestral environments, what do the features of our unusual physiology say about what humans ARE, where we come from, the details of our origin story as a profoundly successful species? And what can we learn by telescoping that story forward to explain some of the most persistent puzzles and paradoxes about our health, the way we age, our need for physical exercise, and our nearly ubiquitous aversion to habits that are good for us?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week, we sprint into the paleoanthropology, biomechanics, and physiology of exercise with Harvard evolutionary biologist Daniel Lieberman, author of several books including Exercised, The Story of the Human Body, and The Evolution of the Human Head. In our rapid-fire discussion we explore how millions of years as hunter-gatherers equipped hominids with a unique package of adaptations for endurance running, why exercise is so good for us but so generally undesirable, and how physical activity in old age helped shape us into the strongly intergenerational social apes we are today.Be sure to check out our extensive show notes with links to all our references at complexity.simplecast.com.
