Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday that his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco last week was a "great achievement" amid soured bilateral relations over Japan's release of tritium-containing treated water from a crippled nuclear plant into the sea.

Failure Is Part of All Great Achievement - Matthew KellyGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:“Another of the great secrets that we often overlook is that failure is a part of all great achievement and discovery. We live in a culture obsessed with success, and as a result we unconsciously foster the attitude that it is not okay to fail. We often measure a person's value by his or her success. Of course, this judgment turns on us when we fail, and we tend to take it personally. If you fail, you aren't a failure. I think baseball teaches us more about failure than any other sport does. A great hitter has a batting average of perhaps 350. What does that tell us? It tells us that he succeeds in hitting the ball only thirty-five percent of the time. What else does it tell us? It tells us that he fails sixty-five percent of the time. Francis T. Vincent Jr., while commissioner of baseball, made these observations in a speech at Fairfield University: Baseball teaches us, or has taught most of us, how to deal with failure. We learn at a very young age that failure is the norm in baseball and, precisely because we have failed, we hold in high regard those who fail less often—those who hit safely in one out of three chances and become star players. I also find it fascinating that baseball, alone in sport, considers errors to be a part of the game, part of its rigorous truth. We must never allow our spirit to be stifled by failure. Failure is a part of progress, not a final outcome.”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion #ThoughtLeader
My guests today are gold medal beach volleyball champion Kent Steffes and beach volleyball player and author Travis Mewhirter. I don't care if you have an interest in beach volleyball, if you want to know what a winner's mindset is, then this is a conversation for you. Kent's unique approach to reaching goals, be it sport or business, is worth your time. His deep philosophical approach to executing a strategy is an example of a 1% person of the 1%. He readily admits there is a cost for winning and shares how he navigated that or re-framed it during his career. Kent and Travis's new book KINGS OF SUMMER, a history of men's beach volleyball, is out now. I just wish I knew Kent better 35 years ago to learn just the three things all the great volleyball players do. What did Kent do after he won the gold at 27? Headed to Stanford business school and did a complete pivot at 30. If you want to listen to someone who approaches things in a way most of us don't, tune in. The first students have graduated from The Salvation Army's inaugural Mental Health and Addictions training program in Samoa. The graduation ceremony was the culmination of three years of work that began in 2018 after the Samoan Government invited The Salvation Army to provide church, community and social services in the country. At the time, about 80 per cent of criminal cases, domestic violence, burglary, theft and traffic offences involved alcohol. Nat Senio, an alcohol and other drugs clinician with The Salvation Army said; “It soon became very apparent that the need for alcohol and drug rehabilitation services was going to be significant as we soon began to exceed the predicted number of referrals, which then naturally progressed to further consideration of how we were going to best meet this need going forward, “To date, we have supported 1037 clients through our Addiction Services.” To learn more, visit salvationarmy.org/ihq

Leonardo’s impressive painting skills didn’t result from a natural talent, but from his decades-long observation of nature as well as his research and experiments in various fields of study. His intense observation of movements allowed his paintings to be realistic and lively. His study of anatomy contributed to the mysterious facial expressions of his subjects. His knowledge of geometry created the perfect combination of art and science. Leonardo’s scientific exploration was initially done for the purpose of artistic creation, but later on, his primary motivation was to satisfy his curiosity. He asked questions like “Why is the sky blue?” “What does the tongue of a woodpecker look like?” His questions referred to various fields of study, and he was able to make innovative observations on anatomy, physics, botany, architecture, geology, and military engineering. And all these were reflected in more than 7,200 pages of his manuscripts that have been preserved to this day.

What is the Great Achievement - you may wonder. Long in the making, I first noticed it during a terrible storm when I discovered I could no longer find the light switch in my cabin. It was at that moment that a fuller situation revealed itself - a situation that I soon recognized as an achievement. A Great Achievement.

Great vision precedes great achievement. Every team needs a compelling vision to give it direction. A team without vision is, at worst, purposeless. At best, it's subject to the personal, and sometimes selfish, agendas of various team members. As the agendas work against each other within your environment, the team's energy and drive drain away. On the other hand, a team that embraces vision becomes focused, energized, confident, intentful, and it knows where it's headed and why it's going there. Remember, vision gives team members direction and confidence. What is your vision? What are you doing to build the confidence of your team?
