Sargassum seaweed was recorded as far back as the 15th century when Christopher Columbus wrote in his expedition diaries about miles and miles and miles of dense seaweed as he crossed the Atlantic Ocean. In 2011, a great mass of this seaweed emerged, stretching from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico, a phenomenon known as the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt. Since then it's been washing up on coastlines in massive amounts, causing a big impact on communities whose economy relies heavily on the tourism industry. As the seaweed decays it releases hydrogen sulphide which has a strong odour of rotten eggs.Various research projects are looking into ways of containing this seaweed, as no one has found a viable solution on an industrial scale. But whilst it is causing problems onshore, offshore in the deep ocean of the Sargasso Sea, the sargassum provides a unique ecosystem for a variety of marine life including turtles and swordfish. So, this week on The Inquiry we're asking, ‘What's going on with sargassum seaweed?'Contributors:Dr. Chuanmin Hu, Professor of Oceanography, University of South Florida College of Marine Science, USADr. David Freestone, Executive Secretary, The Sargasso Sea Commission, Washington DC, USADr. Marie-Louise Felix, Marine Biologist and Lecturer, Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, Consultant to the Department of Fisheries, St LuciaAjit Subramaniam, Biological Oceanographer, Lamont Research Professor, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, New York, USAPresenter: Charmaine Cozier Producer: Jill Collins Researcher: George Crafer Editor: Tara McDermott Technical Producer: Nicky Edwards Production Co-ordinator: Jordan King Image: Miami Beach, Florida, North Beach Atlantic Ocean shoreline, large quantity of arriving seaweed sargassum macroalgae, tourist trying to swim. After heart disease cancer is the leading cause of mortality in the US at over 600,000 deaths annually. Not surprisingly cancer care costs are considerable at approximately $210 billion of which approximately 10% is paid out of pocket. This explains why in part up to 30% of Medicare beneficiaries without subsidies do not fill their anticancer prescriptions. To make matters worse, the COVID pandemic has significantly compromised cancer diagnosis and treatment that are expected to produce negative ripple effects. While President Biden's “Cancer Moonshot,” aims to cut cancer death rates by 50% over the next 25 years, last year the CDC projected that because of the growth and aging of the population the annual number of cancer cases will increase nearly 50% between 2015 and 2050. During this 33 minute interview Ms. Goldsmith discusses the CancerCare's work, in sum, the organization provides free professional support services and information for cancer patients. We move on to discuss the relationship between CancerCare's work and the Medicare hospice benefit, problems with employer based coverage for cancer diagnoses, complications associated with timely cancer screenings, work CancerCare does to help their patients/clients afford their medications. Ms. Goldsmith comments on President Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative, drug pricing policies recently passed under the IRA, challenges her organization faces in raising financial assistance funding and the increasing demands on the organization's workforce. Patricia J. Goldsmith joined CancerCare in 2014 as Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Goldsmith previously served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Previously still, Ms. formerly served as Vice President for Institutional Development, Public Affairs and Marketing at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida – an NCCN Member Institution. Before joining Moffitt, she developed and directed all managed care activities for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. A frequent national meetings and symposia, Ms. Goldsmith has also served on Congressional panels. Ms. Goldsmith has studied at the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Missouri Bloch School of Business and the Harvard School of Public Health. She was a winner of the 1999 Distinguished Women in Business Award sponsored by the Business Journal of Tampa Bay and also was named the 1999 Leukemia Society Woman of the Year. Most recently, Ms. Goldsmith was named to Forbes 50 Over 50 Vision List which was established in partnership with Mika Brzezinski's “Know Your Value,” and highlights women over the age of 50 who have achieved significant success.Information on CancerCare is at: https://www.cancercare.org/. On this episode of SPx, Joe flies solo with St. Pete's very own Peter Betzer, President of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, and Dean Emeritus of the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. When Betzer arrived in St. Petersburg in 1971, the College of Marine Science had five faculty and a dozen graduate students and the city was known as a haven for the elderly and retired - where the downtown streets rolled up after 5pm. Thanks to Betzer and the business leaders of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership (formerly St. Pete Progress), the College of Marine Science now ranks as one of the top ten institutions in the country, and St. Pete's downtown is a bustling center for tech and innovation.

Brian Kornfeld, co-founder and Head of Operations at Synapse, is featured on this episode of Social Business Engine and shares the inspiring story behind this breakout company’s impact on innovation in a region that isn’t widely recognized for innovation. Brian explains the 3 key elements to Synapse and shares why the timing has never been better for innovation and entrepreneurial ventures to flourish in the Tampa Bay area. He also offers insights into the 2019 Synapse Innovation Summit and what’s to come for the company’s future. This conversation includes examples of innovative companies in Tampa Bay and is key to understanding why Florida is a hotspot for entrepreneurship and innovation. The 8 different personas found in business and entrepreneurship are all united under the Synapse ecosystem. Brian and Bernie’s conversation provides insights into the value of this ecosystem in the Tampa Bay Area and throughout the state of Florida, so be sure to listen. This episode is sponsored by SAP. Synapse: 3 Platforms Uniting the 8 Business Personas Synapse was born out of a desire to create a connected business community in the Tampa Bay area to accelerate innovation. It’s improving the brand of the city by joining innovation and entrepreneurship while boosting the economy. Synapse has 3 main platforms: publishing, web platforms, and live events. These 3 platforms cohesively focus on the 8 personas Brian and his team believe are critical to business growth: Entrepreneurs Investors Government Agencies Service Providers Large Scale Corporations Talent (people) Educational Institutions Entrepreneurial Incubators The Tampa Bay business community has been energized over the past decade and its growth shows no signs of slowing. Synapse is helping to overcome the stigmas of “no money, no talent, no customers” that has plagued the area. Brian shares his passion for Synapse and its goals in a way that may convince you to relocate to Tampa Bay, or expand your business footprint in the area, so be sure to listen. Using Live Events and a Powerful Digital Platform to Achieve the Synapse Vision Synapse’s two largest platforms, web and live events, seek to achieve two main goals: enabling connections in the local community and attracting people to the Tampa Bay innovation ecosystem. The web platform is an online community that spans the geographical distance that separates businesses across the state of Florida, not just in Tampa Bay. The platform is free to join and offers members multiple ways to connect with other members including: 1 to 1 connections, innovation challenges sponsored by local businesses, articles and videos, local events, jobs and internships, topical discussions and more. The idea behind the Synapse web platform is to make it easy for anyone in the local business community to thrive by providing an ecosystem that encourages collaboration and innovation whether you’re starting a new business or you want to expand your current business in the area. The second annual Synapse Innovation Summit was held in March 2018 and brought over 3,200 attendees to Tampa Bay and injected an unprecedented level of energy and buzz into the local entrepreneurial sphere. Brian explains that “It made a dent in the universe” in Tampa Bay and his team is already planning the Synapse Innovation Summit 2019. Future Goals for Synapse and the Innovation Ecosystems in Tampa Bay Brian’s biggest goal for Synapse in the coming years is to accelerate the community feel of the innovation ecosystem that exists in Tampa Bay. He wants to engage “The other 90%” of the community that’s not currently connected to Synapse. Hosting corporate innovation challenges, bringing in world class speakers for the Synapse Innovation Summit, and producing better research results on smaller budgets are all goals the Synapse team is focusing on. Professor in the Department of Psychology at University of South Florida Dr. David Diamond Is our guest in episode 1329 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show”. In this LLVLC Classic episode we bring you an interview and a lecture from Dr. David Diamond, David Diamond, Ph.D. was like any other American in dealing with his health. He obediently ate the high-carb diet with lots of whole grains while faithfully cutting his fat intake as a means for getting healthy. There was only one problem–his triglycerides were through the roof! This University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences department faculty member wasn’t about to sit on the sidelines and do nothing, so he started researching into what he could do to reduce his soaring triglyceride levels and take off a few extra pounds that had crept on. Listen in to today’s interview as Jimmy and Dr. Diamond talk about his personal health journey, how the vegan diet advocates like Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. John McDougall are incredibly shortsighted in the way they think about the role of nutrition and health and why he doesn’t seek out attention or accolades for the work he is doing educating the public. The numbers are startling, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 100 men respond “YES,” that they have experienced 'Military Sexual Trauma' MST, when screened by their VA provider. However we know from research that the numbers are much much higher for both men and women in the military. Those men that are willing to talk about their personal experience is quite different than those that have actually suffered and experienced abuse. Research shows that the numbers are more over the 50% mark - that is a huge disparity. For many, SHAME, DISGUST, and ANGER, take over their lives and if left unchecked - it will destroy their future. This is the SILENT DESTROYER OF LIVES of both men and women in the United States Military! ... it doesn't have to be this way! Symptoms include issues of not being able to feel LOVE, HAPPINESS, OR TRUST. Any sexual activity in which one is involved against one’s will – he or she may have been pressured into sexual activities, may have been unable to consent to sexual activities (for example, when intoxicated), or may have been physically forced into sexual activities. Other experiences that fall into the category of MST include Hazing or “just something normal”, unwanted sexual touching or grabbing; threatening, offensive remarks about a person’s body or sexual activities; and/or threatening or unwelcome sexual advances. This is a very personal and powerful discussion today on EMOTIONS R US for DrBev and her guest, Yolanda Harper. Prepare to have your mind blown as today's audio podcast with Dr. Dominic D' Agostino takes a deep dive into ketosis - showing you how navy seals, extreme athletes and even busy executives can enhance physical and mental performance by using the secret weapon of ketones. During this interview with Dr. D' Agostino, you're going to discover... -Why extreme Navy Seals are using ketosis... -Can you get into ketosis by eating ketones (and still consuming high amounts of carbohydrates) instead of eating a high fat, low carb diet? -How ketosis can be used to control diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers, ALS... -The mechanism by which ketones can "juice up your brain"... -How ketosis can enhance blood vessel dilation and wound healing... -Whether the consumption of ketones is actually safe... -How to improve your oxygen efficiency with ketone intake... -Why ketones can be used to enhance mental performance and not just exercise function... -Practical ways you can use keto salts and ketones to enhance physical performance... -And much more! Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, PhD (pictured right) is an assistant professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He teaches courses in molecular pharmacology and physiology, and maintains involvement in several studies researching metabolic treatments for neurological disorders such as seizures, Alzheimer’s, ALS, and cancer—all of which are metabolically linked. His entry in to this field began when, in 2007, the Office of Naval Research funded his study into seizures related to oxygen toxicity experienced by Navy SEAL divers using closed-circuit breathing apparatus. At this juncture, he came across the ketogenic diet, which has already been confirmed as an effective treatment for epilepsy and a variety of seizure disorders. He is now studying how this same ketogenic diet and the use of ketones can be used to enhance physical and mental performance.
