Syria was a key member of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” – a coalition of actors opposing Israel and its actions. What will Assad's departure mean for the resistance against Israel, especially given Jolani's overt friendliness with Tel Aviv? Given their new government, what is in store for Lebanon and Hezbollah now? And how about Iraq and Yemen?To discuss all of this and more is returning guest, Ghadi Francis. Ghadi is an author, journalist, and war correspondent who has covered the situations in Syria and Palestine in great detail. Born in Lebanon, she is the author of the book “My pen and pain: One hundred days in Syria” (2012). Last month, Ghadi joined The MintCast to discuss the fallout of Israel's attack on its neighbors. During the interview, she set her sights on the Erdoğan administration in Ankara, stating that “Türkiye is as expansionist as Israel – and it is not new!” We lived in a nation that was called ‘Greater Syria' that was occupied by the Ottomans for around 300 years. And it stretched from Lebanon to Syria to Iraq. Nineveh, Aleppo, all of that was occupied by the Ottomans. We were part of the Ottoman Empire. We were ruled by them in a dictatorship and in an occupation.”Francis recently returned from a trip to Iraq, where she was impressed by the rebirth of the country after decades of occupation. Unlike Yemen, she assessed, Iraq is not in a position to face down the might of either the U.S. or Israel. “If the Iraqis continue to resist on their own and they get attacked by the Israelis, nobody is going to protect them,” she said. “So if they refrain for a while from being in active resistance operations and, rather, being a good and strong community…this itself is a great achievement.”Support the showMintPress News is a fiercely independent. Send us a textI have visited Syria several times, running or participating in academic programs. These are my reflections. I noticed a couple of glitches along the way, but nothing that will not be obvious to you. (If the Israelis withdrew from the Golan, they would be replaced by Syrians, not Israelis. Sorry for that). Twice I discussed maps. One was of Syria, the other of what is commonly called Greater Syria, including all of the areas controlled by the Ottomans before WWI. If you are not good at conceptualizing such things, you might go online to find the maps I discuss. Update: A Syrian friend reminded me that I first visited her country in 1991 rather than 1993. Thanks to her for that helpful reminder.

“A land without a people, and a people without a land” is how the relationship between Palestine and the Jewish people was described by Christian writers in the 1800s. And the 20th-century history of the Middle East has largely been written through these eyes. But this film from Al Jazeera Arabic looks at Palestine from a different angle. It hears from historians and witness accounts, and features archive documents that show Palestine as a thriving province of Greater Syria and the Ottoman Empire at the dawn of the 20th century. The evidence suggests that its cities had a developing trade and commercial sector, growing infrastructure, and embryonic culture that would enable it to meet the challenges of the decades ahead. However, the political ramifications of the Balfour Declaration, San Remo Conference and British Mandate set in motion a series of events that profoundly affected this vibrant, fledgeling society and led to the events of 1948 and beyond. This film is the other side of the Palestinian story.
Just south of the World Trade Center district sits the location of a forgotten Manhattan immigrant community. Curious outsiders called it "Little Syria" although the residents themselves would have known it as the Syrian Colony. Starting in the 1880s people from the Middle East began arriving at New York's immigrant processing station -- immigrants from Greater Syria which at that time was a part of the Ottoman Empire. The Syrians of Old New York were mostly Christians who brought their trades, culture and cuisine to the streets of lower Manhattan. And many headed over to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn as well, creating another district for Middle Eastern American culture which would outlast the older Manhattan area. Who were these Syrian immigrants who made their home here in New York? Why did they arrive? What were their lives like? And although Little Syria truly is long gone, what buildings remain of this extraordinary district? When Europe’s Great War engulfed the Ottoman Empire, Arab nationalists rose in revolt against their Turkish rulers and allied with the British on the promise of an independent Arab state. In October 1918, the Arabs’ military leader, Prince Faisal, victoriously entered Damascus and proclaimed a constitutional government in an independent Greater Syria. Faisal won American support for self-determination at the Paris Peace Conference, but other Entente powers plotted to protect their colonial interests. Under threat of European occupation, the Syrian-Arab Congress declared independence on March 8, 1920 and crowned Faisal king of a “civil representative monarchy.” Sheikh Rashid Rida, the most prominent Islamic thinker of the day, became Congress president and supervised the drafting of a constitution that established the world’s first Arab democracy and guaranteed equal rights for all citizens, including non-Muslims. But France and Britain refused to recognize the Damascus government and instead imposed a system of mandates on the pretext that Arabs were not yet ready for self-government. In July 1920, the French invaded and crushed the Syrian state. The fragile coalition of secular modernizers and Islamic reformers that had established democracy was destroyed, with profound consequences that reverberate still. I criticize the Canadian Government for suggesting that health care workers should be first responders dealing with people who are suffering from mental health. Bad guy yelled, Allahu Akbar, right before he stabbed the police officer. Bill BARR stated the following: 'We know that he possessed a significant volume of materials that demonstrates his interest in and support for violent Islamist extremism, including materials related to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS),' said Barr, using an Arabic term for Greater Syria or the Levant. No one died in this incident. There were 16 shots fired by police officers and 6 from the bad guy. The yelp you hear from me is making fun of a terrorist. I have been making fun of terrorists since 2004. I like to make fun of them.
As far as the West is concerned, World War I is largely a European story, but that's only part of the full narrative. In this episode of Big World, SIS professor Elizabeth Thompson discusses stolen democracy in the Middle East after “the war to end all wars.” Professor Thompson, the Mohamed S. Farsi Chair of Islamic Peace at SIS, provides a more expansive understanding of the impact of World War I and the Paris Peace Conference (2:25), including the Syrian Arab Congress that convened at Damascus in 1919 (6:24). She also explains how Britain and France intervened to destroy this newly-declared, independent Arab kingdom (9:01) and why Syrian Arabs were not, at the time, protected by international law or the new League of Nations (10:00). Based on research she conducted for her book, How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs, Professor Thompson breaks down how the British and French attempted to erase all evidence of the Syrian Arab State's democracy (14:54). She also explains why knowledge of this part of history helps us understand more recent events in Greater Syria (18:31) and reveals how different the present-day Middle East might be if the Syrian Arab Congress had successfully instituted a representative democracy in the 1920s (21:45). 1919 was the year in which Woodrow Wilson commissioned an Inter-Allied investigation from the Paris Peace Conference into the desires of the populations in the former Ottoman Empire. Great Britain and France pulled out of that commission leaving two Americans, Henry King and Charles Crane to lead a quixotic mission to get the borders of Greater Syria right. Their investigation into the desires of the populations in the former Ottoman Empire and the response to that report by the 1st Pan-Syrian Congress in Damascus is the focus of this workshop. The report and its recommendations were embargoed until the 1930s. Najib Mikati, former PM of Lebanon championed the cause of centrism in the fractured country of Lebanon and in the fragmented region of the Middle East. This policy –which he promoted whilst being PM in his second mandate from 2011 to 2013- was viewed with skepticism, as expected, by all factions of the political class. Centrism, what a neutral idea?! The basic principle of centrism is that extreme views lead to violent clashes from which retreat is very difficult. The idea is neither novel, nor revolutionary, but wise. And wisdom has been lacking from Lebanese politics for a while and, from the region for as long as one can remember. This policy is not about political correctness, or avoiding facing problems and critical issues but rather facing such problems with moderation, while maintaining a balancing act. Some would suggest that such policy resolves nothing but, contrasted and compared with the policy of brinkmanship that has characterized Lebanon's modern history, it is a winning formula, not a magic one. A winning formula does not necessarily cure the ills, but prolongs the life of the patient till a cure is found or till recovery is on its way. A winning formula does not even pretend to be a 'win-win' solution, the favorite of consultants and peace makers. Until a long-lasting deal is achieved, centrism lessens the losses, cushions the blows, and limits the damages. This policy accepts all views as being legitimate, but rejects any one view to being superior or greater to another. What centrism meant in Lebanon was to maintain an internal equilibrium between warring factions who are trigger happy and prone to use violence –whether verbal or physical- to get their views across, or worse above and beyond their opponents'. Lebanon's modern history is peppered with centrist politicians who have stirred the explosive-laden ship of government into safer shores. In the 1940s, Christian ultra-nationalists clamored for a closer relation with France and the West in general, and Muslim ultra-nationalists championed the cause of a Greater Syria with Lebanon just a province thereof. President El Khoury and PM El Solh stayed the difficult centrist course which gave birth to a Lebanon that is not at odds with the Arab Middle East, and that is reconciled with the rest of the world. In the mid 1950s, Christian ultra-nationalists and supporters of then President Camille Chamoun favored a NATO-like alliance with Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Jordan. Muslim ultra-nationalists countered such efforts with an Arab unity with Egypt's Nasser. Civil war ensued, and only a centrist, centralist President Shehab was capable of bringing the country together. He succeeded in building, for a while, a modern republic based on the equality of rights for all citizens. In the mid-1970s when the Christian ultra-nationalists staunchly opposed the growing danger of a militarized PLO and took arms from Israel, the Muslim ultra-nationalists sided with the PLO and took arms and funds from a wider coalition of nations who championed the cause of the PLO (not of Lebanon) including Syria, Iraq, Libya and Somalia to name just a few. That led to a civil war that lasted almost 15 years, wreaked havoc on the country, cost more than 100,000 lives, devastated the state coffers and infrastructure; and brought Lebanon to the brink of extinction. The same re-occurred after the assassination of former PM Hariri in 2005, and Najib Mikati was called-in for a first premiership mandate, as a centrist politician who can help patch the wounds of a dying nation. Contrary to all of his predecessors, including the slain Hariri, he did not participate in the parliamentary election he was brought to monitor. In his second mandate, 2011-2013, Najib Mikati was attacked by the pro-Hariri camp and the larger March 14th Movement as a stooge of Hezbollah and its allies. Less than a year into his mandate he was equally attacked by Hezbollah and its allies as failing to implement ‘...

Guy Burak, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies librarian at New York University, explores the Ottomans' adoption of one branch of the Hanafi legal tradition as the official school (madhhab) of the dynasty. The period of time in which this process occurred was during the 15th to 18th centuries, and Burak focuses on the lands of Greater Syria. What Burak seeks to illustrate is that through the adoption of an official school of law, the Ottoman hierarchy played a significant role in how the school of law was shaped. Examples Burak provides to demonstrate this phenomenon are the institutionalization of the position of mufti, the formalization of genealogical literature (tabaqat), and the canonization process of books essential to the school. In addition to examining the propagators of official Ottoman positions, Burak also examines how scholars not part of the Ottoman mainstream branch functioned and responded to these changes.
