There is no doubt in the claim that the foremost interpreter of Ibn ‘Arabi (d. 638/1240) within Twelver Shi'ism is Sayyid Haydar al-Amuli (d. 787/1385), who in his Jami' al-Asrar thoroughly filtered the Akbarian doctrine in such a way that it emerged in accordance with the theological demands of the Twelver tradition. While Amuli's accomplishments in these regards are acknowledged, it is not known whether any schools arose within the intellectual centers of Iran and Iraq loyal specifically to his ideology; it is instead in the Islamic periphery of India, where demonstrable evidence exists to indicate the existence of such a school therein. Sayyid Nur Allah Shushtari (d. 1019/1620), the martyred Mughal chief justice, quite openly aligns with Amuli in his Majalis al-Mu'minin (Gathering of the Believers), labeling him as Sayyid al-Muti'allihin (Lord of the heavenly ones) whilst openly appropriating ideas from Amuli's Jami' al-Asrar to develop the thesis of his majlis-i shishum (sixth gathering) on Sufi believers. Shushtari argues that in essence Sufism and Shi'ism are one and the same, one is an inward expression whereas the other is outward. Furthermore, in his Majalis al-Mu'minin, Shushtari includes a lengthy entry on Ibn ‘Arabi, providing illumination on his supposed hidden Shi'ism, as well as a defense of Akbarian monism. Shushtari's views have routinely been categorized as aberrational by mainstream Usulis, like al-Wahid al-Bihbahani (d. 1205/1791), who decried him as a Shi'ah-tarash (Shi'ah fabricator); it is thus of great intrigue that when Bihbahani's student, Sayyid Dildar ‘Ali Naqawi Nasirabadi (d. 1235/1820), returned to North India in 1781 with the aim of spreading Usulism, he met stiff resistance by Twelver Chishtis (Sufis), who claimed to follow a supposed ideological school of Haydar al-Amuli linked with Shushtari. This occurs more than 150 years after the execution of Shushtari, indicating that such an Akbarian-Amulian lineage potentially existed in North India; also giving credence to the Sufi-Shi'i nexus claims of majlis-i shishum. In order to delve further into this matter, Nasirabadi's polemic against this group, titled al-Shihab al-Thaqib, and the rejoinder prepared by this Akbarian-Amulian group, Radd-i al-Shihab al-Thaqib, will be analyzed and expounded upon in this paper.

Few philosophers can be said to have been watershed figures, in the wake of whose teachings a tradition of philosophy forever changed its course. Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi was such a figure for the development of Islamic philosophy. Trained in the Aristotelian school of Ibn Sina (known in the West as Avicenna), Suhrawardi nonetheless became a mystical philosopher who not only demonstrated the limits of rational deduction, but also insisted there was an alternative mode of knowledge. This he called ‘ilm al-huzuri—literally ‘knowledge by presence'—that derived from our direct experiences. As a mystic, such experiences included not only the commonsensical realm of ordinary everyday experience. It also included the mystical states that he argued allowed human beings to come into the presence of their own true being and in turn the ultimate Being of God. Both, he claimed, were pure light: divine light that that was at once the basis of all existence and the source of all knowledge. Drawing from the famous Light Verse of the Quran, from his philosophical studies, and from his own mystical experiences, Suhrawardi called his teachings the ‘Wisdom of Illumination' (hikmat al-ishraq). Nile Green talks to John Walbridge, author of God and Logic in Islam: The Caliphate of Reason (Cambridge University Press, 2010).

America has put out the welcome mat for terrorists, and they are coming in the open door, with new and creative ways to wage ‘jihad'. In this episode of The Terrorist Therapist Show, we look at two such stories of the new jihad: a foiled plot to assassinate former President George Bush and an ongoing threat from Afghans who don't understand why raping children is wrong. Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, a 52-year-old Iraqi national, living in America illegally, and supporting himself by smuggling terrorists into the U.S. throughthe Southern Border, cooked up a plot to assassinate President Bush. Why him? Because, as he confided in a man who turned out to be an FBI informant, he wanted to take revenge on Bush for killing Iraqis - and was willing to die a martyr for the cause. His plot - supported by ISIS and Al-Raed - has enough drama and intrigue for a Hollywood movie. A more insidious threat is the thousands of Afghans who were flown here after Biden surrendered to the Taliban. Some were heroes, who risked their livesto help American troops in Afghanistan. But, others, who snuck through the essentially non-existent vetting process, are jihadists. And still others may become jihadists when they get frustrated by their struggles to make a life here. Already, Afghans (in the U.S. and in other countries) are being arrested for raping children, much to their confusion and chagrin, because they claim it is acceptable in their culture.

Assalamu alaykum, As I begin my own spiritual journey, I want to hear from those who have taken this path before me. This podcast focuses on them and listening to their stories - uninterrupted. My name is Hebah Masood and I invite you to reflect on the trajectories of their lives, and the guidance and blessings provided by Allah swt along that journey. Reflecting on the order and harmony within nature, Shaykh AbdulKarim Yahya knew at a young age that God existed. He embraced Islam in his junior year of high school in Berkeley, California. A translation of Imam Ghazali's renowned "Ihya Uloom al-Deen" ("The Revival of the Religious Sciences") inspired him to seek out teachers who embodied those characteristics. His journey took him to Syria where he studied Arabic and Tajweed. And then onto Tarim, Yemen, where he was one of the first American students to enroll in the newly opened Dar al Mustafa. That became his base for 13 years, and he became a translator for Habib Omar and the other habaib all over the world. After returning to the U.S. he would eventually establish Dar Al-Rahma in 2017 to serve and teach the Muslims of the Detroit area. In this episode he talks about serving and learning with people of knowledge over the last 23 years. He also discusses the inner-city community in Detroit where he teaches, and how it's been impacted by COVID-19 and ongoing police brutality against the Black community. His story intersects with many familiar names: Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller and his wife Shaykha Umm Sahl, Habib Ali al-Mashhur bin Hafiz, الحبيب عمر بن حفيظ - Habib Omar, Shaykh Abdul Rahman al-Shaghouri, Habib Ali al-Jifri English, Habib Abdurrahman bin Hafiz, Shaykh Umar Hussein Al Khatib, Habib Abdullah bin Muhammed bin Alawi bin Shihab, Habib Salim al Shatiriy, Shaykh Muhammed Ali al Khatib, Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Shaykh Abdullah Alkadi, Shaykh Ibrahim Osi-Efa, Shaykh Jamal Ud-Deen Hysaw, Shaykh Abu Muneer al-Sha'ar, Abu Anas, Dr. Omar Mahmood عمر محمود, Imam Dawud Walid, Imam Abdullah El-Amin, Imam Saleem Khalid and Shaykh Ali Sulaiman Ali.-Also available on most other major podcast streaming services including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts, Castbox and Podbay.-Do you enjoy this podcast?
