We welcome Lacanian scholar Robert Beshara back to the show to discuss his new book A Psychoanalytic Biography of Ye: The Legacy of Unconditional Love. It particularly focuses on the 5-year period from 2016 to 2021 (the Shaky-Ass Years) in an effort to think psychoanalytically about Ye's complex subjectivity, his struggle with manic-depression, the thin line between the personal and the political when it comes to celebrity culture, and, of course, his aesthetic productions – be they in the form of music, video, or fashion – which the author regards as also being ethical and political projects/objects. The book takes what Ye says seriously, as opposed to dismissing him through the use of stigmatizing terms. Beshara specifically aligned his desire with Donda's in an attempt to see him from her point of view – that is, through the legacy of unconditional love. Buy the book from the publishers website with the following discount code PROMO25 https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-2886-4 Learn more about Robert Beshara's work at https://sites.google.com/site/robertkbeshara.
We recap this month's moving episodes that acknowledge the incredible burden of motherhood during genocide. Insha'Allah, that weight will be relieved from the shoulders and hearts of the Palestinian people, ameen.
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Regina Kunzel, professor of history and women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University, to discuss her recent book In the Shadow of Diagnosis: Psychiatric Power and Queer Life. Then, she speaks with Beshara Doumani, professor of Palestinian studies at Brown University, to discuss the 76th anniversary of the Nakba. First, Emma runs through updates on South Africa's ICJ appeal to stop Israel's Rafah invasion, growing public dissent from Biden allies to his support of Israel's genocide, the US' detainment of an anti-zionist Israeli academic, Bob Menendez's genius legal tactic, the assassination attempt on Slovakia's Prime Minister, Trump's legal woes, Argentinian homophobic hate crimes, and Louisiana gerrymandering, before watching CNN try to save face on their coverage of the violence against student protesters. Professor Regina Kunzel then dives right into the history of the psychiatric industry, from its roots as a custodial care industry (asylums, etc) in the 19th Century, through its slow battle for professional legitimacy over the first half of the 1900s, exploring how this push for legitimacy saw the industry lay claim to a wide range of “problems in living” such as anxiety, depression, and (importantly) homosexuality and gender nonconformity. Expanding on this, Professor Kunzel tackles the presentation of queerness as a “treatable” mental disorder, one that would eventually be codified as a personality disorder (alongside pedophilia and sadism) with the introduction of the DSM in 1952, before stepping back to look at the role World War II, and more specifically the emphasis on mental health screenings, had in giving state-backed legitimacy to the psychiatric industry writ large, and in its particular pathologization of queer identity. After looking at the central role de-pathologizing homosexuality played in the gay rights movement of the 1970s, and the side-effect of gender “deviance” taking a back seat to homosexuality, Professor Kunzel wraps up with the re-emergence of the medical and psychiatric attack on queer identity with the mainstreaming of transphobic politics over the last decade. Professor Beshara Doumani then joins, walking through the 76 years of Palestinian oppression and ethnic cleansing since the 1948 Nakba, with the original event seeing the expulsion of over 80% of Palestinians from their homes, the end of the Palestinian state (and Palestinian society), and the creation of the State of Israel in the vacuum left by British colonial rule. Continuing the conversation, Professor Doumani contextualizes the central role the Nakba plays in Palestinian trauma and oppression to this day, exacerbated and brought to the fore with the following “earthquakes” of the 1967 Six-Day War, which saw hundreds of thousands more Palestinians ethnically cleansed, and the Oslo Accords complete isolation of Palestinians between the river and the sea. After diving deeper into the particular failure of the 2-state “solution,” Professor Doumani walks Emma through the specific repression he's faced as a Palestinian academic, and the tremendous increase it has seen in the wake of October 7th. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch British bigot Mike Graham boot Arab-Israeli Jew Avi Shlaim from his program for being honest about Israeli apartheid. Alec from Western New York explores the evolution of his perspective on anti-zionism, Mike in Denver on the second coming of meme-stock, and Bumble creator discusses the alienating future of AI-infused dating. Fidaa Elaydi joins us today to share her personal experiences of Al Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza. A grandchild and child of Palestinian refugees to Gaza 76 years ago, she is four generations into a history of colonization and displacement, and now, genocide. As a mom of 4 herself, including a newborn, she has an acute perspective on mothers in Gaza today.Hear about her family, delivering babies in war, losing everything, trying to evacuate, trying to reunite, and now trying to survive an impending ground invasion on Rafah where they have been seeking shelter. Mothers for 8 months and 76 years have held onto surreal hopes in Palestine, and Gazans in particular have a special coping mechanism we wish we did, too.Tune in at 6pm EST to Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or head to our website to take a listen. Did you know that much of the Palestinian diaspora is forbidden by Israel to return to Palestine, despite Article 13(2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which requires nations to ensure the safe return of refugees to their homeland? Unless you know a Palestinian, you probably didn't.Amal Fayad is one such member of this diaspora, numbering in the millions across the world, who knows Gaza, through the stories of her family. In conversation with Professor Beshara Doumani, the inaugural Mahmoud Darwish Professor of Palestinian Studies at Brown University. Professor Doumani gives us critical historical context for what's happening now in Palestine. Explaining why and how pre-colonial Palestinian history is relevant today, he draws a stark contrast between pre-WW1 Gaza and the besieged Gaza of the present-day. This episode was recorded on October 24 at 20:44 Palestine time. Please note, we are dedicating all the afikra podcast programming to special podcast episodes relevant to understanding historical context to what is happening in Palestine. Each episode will be recorded in real time and uploaded to YouTube and anywhere you get your podcasts. Doumani's research focuses on groups, places, and time periods marginalized by mainstream scholarship on the early modern and modern Middle East, with a focus on the social, economic, and legal history of Eastern Mediterranean. He also writes on the topics of academic freedom, and the Palestinian condition. His books include Rediscovering Palestine: Merchants and Peasants in Jabal Nablus, 1700-1900, and Family Life in the Ottoman Mediterranean: A Social History. In this episode of the Pharmacy View Podcast host Scott Carpenter, talks with Beshara Dafesh, founder and CEO of LeaseIQ, a platform that helps Pharmacy owners manage and keep up to date with their property portfolios and leases. Beshara has had over two decades of experience in various sectors—retail, healthcare, QSR, and telecommunications. He has completed numerous property transactions across the health and medical industries, among others. He founded LeaseIQ with the goal of making a difference and bringing about significant benefits to leasing, site acquisition, and property management so that clients can leverage the data the platform provides to not just grow but also innovate their businesses. Having launched LeaseIQ just under 12 months ago, Beshara calls it a real success story. A lot of organizations and individuals have used it to manage their leases across different sectors, he says. As he puts forth, one of the biggest reasons as to why he created LeaseIQ was that he wanted to give tenants the power over their data as a lease, he believes, is an active document. The features that LeaseIQ provide include (but are not limited to): - an extensive mapping tool, - one-touch lease summaries, - pre-built fields to track leases, - automated updates, - benchmark dashboard, and - reporting functionality LeaseIQ is a centralized cloud-based software system that allows the user to access information whether it is via desktop, mobile or tablet. It keeps track of all the critical dates, documentation compliance, location management and benchmark reporting. A Pharmacist can access industry data and make informed decisions. From guiding investments to lease re-negotiations, data on the platform is a tool that the clients can use to their advantage.

On today's episode I was joined by Nader Beshara, the CoFounder and Director of Ingham Jones a start up financial services, risk, technology and compliance global recruitment search firm with 10 people headquartered in Brighton UK. Nader has been an avid listener of The RAG and I was delighted to hear that listening to the show has helped him a lot since launching in November 2020. We discussed the reality of his journey since launching during the pandemic and here are a few highlights - Launching in covid was an amazing time to do it as he was literally missing out on NOTHING in life whilst working all hours he could - He and Jermaine his business partner hit their annual target inside 12 months - He has loved the entrepreneurial experience to date and would recommend it to any recruiter whos questioning their plan right now - He is growing but stressed that it will be at their own pace and they won't try and follow the ‘growth crowd' that we see in our sector Super honest and genuine, Nader is a recent and relevant example of what is possible with the right attitude as a start up recruitment founder!

Financially Speaking with Kathy Cook Noble Exciting things are happening on the Financially Speaking podcast! We'd like to welcome our new Lifestyle Contributor host – Brent ‘Besh' Beshara. Besh describes himself as “a global citizen, student of life, explorer, scientist, and a firehose philosopher.” He'll be sharing his story - how he retired as a Canadian Military Special Forces Navy Bomb Disposal Diver and became an international knife designer inventing the “Besh Wedge” – the strongest knife tip in the world. But he ultimately decided to take the “Rasta Bob” route by making music, supporting his tribe, and rockin' at music festivals. He says “(it) came down to my choices, accountability, action, and commitment.” As our Lifestyle Contributor, Besh will be sharing some of the key things he has learned about living a life filled with purpose. Brent ‘Besh' Beshara - I am a global citizen, student of life, explorer, scientist, and a firehose philosopher. My 24 years in the Canadian military as a Special Forces Navy Bomb Disposal Diver were amazing, but it came with a sincere sacrifice. It cost me mentally, physically, and cost me my first marriage. So since retiring in 2007, I have created for myself a lifestyle of researching, understanding, and applying the “application of life” which consists of many diverse modalities from ancient tribal wisdom, to current quantum understandings, to extreme cold exposure. This world understanding has allowed me to get to know the truth of myself which helps free me from the perceived dramas of life. What I want for myself, I want for everyone, therefore I feel compelled to share my personal method of understanding that continues to help me and can help others clear their vexations and live a life truly worth living. www.besh.ca besh@beshknives.com Kathy's Book: All Ladies Should Use the F-Word: A Guide to Loving Your Finances Purchase on Amazon.com Amazon.co.uk Amazon.ca *Listen now on the Inspired Choices Network app! https://linktr.ee/inspiredchoicesnetwork ~ More About Financially Speaking ~ Everywhere you go, everywhere you turn, everyone you talk to, money appears.
