fWotD Episode 2467: Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 5 February 2024 is Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. The Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, also known as One Hanson Place, is a skyscraper in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. Located at the northeast corner of Ashland Place and Hanson Place near Downtown Brooklyn, the tower was designed by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer and constructed from 1927 to 1929 as the new headquarters for the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. At 41 stories and 512 feet (156 m) tall, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower was the tallest building in Brooklyn until 2009.The Williamsburgh Savings Bank was originally headquartered in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; its officers decided to construct a new skyscraper headquarters near Downtown Brooklyn in the mid-1920s. The bank occupied the lowest floors when the building opened on April 1, 1929, while the remaining stories were rented as offices. By the late 20th century, dentists' offices occupied much of the structure. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the tower's exterior as a city landmark in 1977 and designated some of the interior spaces in 1996. Through several mergers, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank became part of HSBC Bank USA, which sold the building in 2004. The building's upper stories were converted to luxury condominium apartments from 2005 to 2007, while the banking hall became an event space. The building's main entrance is through a large arch on Hanson Place. At ground level, the tower is clad with limestone above a granite dado. Above the sixth story, the building is faced in brick with terracotta decoration, and a series of setbacks taper to a clock tower and a domed roof. Inside is an entrance vestibule and lobby with ornately decorated marble and metalwork. The 63-foot-high (19 m) banking room includes a nave, aisles, and a chancel—spaces similar to those found in a church. A basement lobby leads to Atlantic Terminal and the Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center station, while a mezzanine-level ladies' lounge overlooks the banking room. When the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower was completed, there was commentary about both the building's architecture and its symbolism as Brooklyn's tallest building. Over the years, local residents have used the building both as a clock and as a landmark for giving out directions, and the tower has been used as a filming location. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Monday, 5 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.

Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the infamous Gilgo Beach serial murders now has been charged with killing a 4th woman. Meanwhile, Governor Hochul wants New York State to contribute more than $2 billion dollars to help cover the costs of caring for recent migrant arrivals. Plus, this month marks 10 years of New York City's Vision Zero policy. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his intention to implement the policy back in 2014 after city traffic killed some 299 people a year before. The initiative lowered the default speed limit from 30 to 25 miles an hour, increased enforcement and redesigned intersections and streets to better protect pedestrians, cyclists, and those in vehicles. Yet over the last few years, the number of traffic deaths has not seen a major decline. In fact the number of deaths never drop below 200 in a year. All this week on NYC Now, we'll be hearing stories about how the policy affects your everyday life. WNYC's Michael Hill sat with De Blasio to reflect on the initiative. After that, Michael and WNYC producer Amanda Ronzon head to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn to hear their thoughts on traffic.

By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch By 1906, when the pedestrian era was over, most of the elite pedestrians turned to legitimate professions to support their families. Daniel O'Leary was traveling for a big publishing house. John “Lepper” Hughes was in the real estate business, Jimmy Albert was a Texas cattleman, Robert Vint was an oil agent in Russia. Samuel Day was a house painter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But many others had a darker side, driven by motivations of greed and were not necessarily the most outstanding citizens. It should not be too surprising that many were involved in wild free-spending lifestyles, scandals, illegal activities, and run-ins with the law. This episode will concentrate on the strange darker side of the sport during the late 1800s. Future episodes will focus on corruption during the races and some bizarre love triangles among the running community. Run Davy Crockett's Pony Express Trail 50 or 100-miler to be held on October 14-15, 2022, on the historic wild west Pony Express Trail in Utah. Run among the wild horses. Crew required. Your family and friends drive along with you. http://ponyexpress100.org/ Publicity Fraud and Redemption The year 1879 saw an explosion of people trying to enter the ultrarunning/pedestrian sport with at least 90 six-day races held worldwide with 900 starters. That year, Madame Waldron and Walter Moore tried their hands at going after the fame and fortune of pedestrianism. Their story is interesting because they both degraded into serious fraud but later, they turned around their lives serving the downtrodden in their community. Harriet “Hattie” L. (Waldron) Adams (1845-1911), of Brooklyn, New York (also known as Madame Waldron), became a female pedestrian in 1879. She married very young, in 1861, at the age of seventeen, to Henry Adams and they had a daughter, Emma. Henry likely died and in 1879, as the Pedestrian craze took hold in America, Hattie turned to the sport to start a new life and attempt to earn a fortune. Skating in the Brooklyn Rink In January 1879, Adams (Madame Waldron) walked 150 miles in 50 hours at the Adelphi Theatre in New York City. Next, on March 3, 1879, she competed in an “International Pedestrian and Billiard Tournament” that was held at the Brooklyn Roller Skating Rink, near Dr. Justin D. Fulton's Temple. Pedestrians, male and female from nine countries attempted various walks for huge money on seven sawdust tracks, each 20 laps to a mile, set up in the building. It was an amazing spectacle. “Its entire appearance had been changed from a mammoth, bleak and dreary barn to a bright and cheery place of amusement. Between the tracks were placed rows of evergreens, shrubs and flowing plants which gave the floor much of the appearance of a garden. Three full-sized billiard tables were placed in a space in the center of the rink. From the roof were pendant hundreds of bright flags. At the rear of the hall was a large music gallery.” Adams/Madame Waldron and one of the most famous female pedestrians, May Marshall, attempted to walk 4,000 quarter miles in 4,000 quarter hours. Adams was said to be “of large statue but attractive,” 180 pounds, and claimed to be “the heavyweight champion of America.” She did not succeed in the very difficult 1,000-mile walk but had tasted the spotlight of fame and wanted more. A couple months later, Adams competed against Walter Moore (1854-1915), a novice walker and construction worker from Brooklyn, attempting 2,700 miles in 2,700 quarter hours in Brooklyn at Bennett's Hotel on Atlantic Avenue. They did not make it, covered at least 111 miles, but they did evidently find love and got married. Walter Moore started going by the name of Charles Livingston and claimed that he successfully walked 4,000 quarter miles in 4,000 quarter hours, which was not true. Fasting for 42 Days After their short pedestrian careers were over,

I Can't Find My Way Off Atlantic During the winter of 1895, the main thoroughfare of Atlantic Avenue was set upon by work crews from City Hall, who - in preparation for the approaching 20th Century - sought to improve the quality of the road surfaces and allow for increased traffic. The works were scheduled to last no longer than two months - but, thanks to mismanagement, bad luck, and direct appropriation of funds - the project stretched languorously into the summer of 1896: the year of the heatwave.  “What a disaster,” wrote Elliott Callahan. “The wheels of carts, of automobiles, sinking into the asphalt as it melted on the streets. Confused horses. Shouting patrons. Great columns of immobilised travellers, the length of the avenue.”  From the relative safety of the boardwalk, far from the sounds of the work crews, the organ grinders were known to sing:    Oh once, long ago, I knew peace in my heart, I would rise with the sun and the birds! But now I am stuck in the back of a cart, And my anger surpasses my words.  Last springtime I met a remarkable gem, In the summer, my thoughts turned romantic. I would love to revisit my sweetheart again, But I can't find my way off Atlantic.    Perhaps I have been here for thirty five years.  Suspended 'twixt horror and prayer.  Perhaps when the horrible traffic jam clears, I will find and imprison the mayor! I will find and imprison the mayor of Bluff, Just as soon as I'm out of the fray! I can see City Hall just ahead, sure enough, But there's forty nine cars in the way.    Help! Help! Help! Help! I can't find my way off Atlantic! Help! Help! Help me! Help! I can't find my way off Atlantic! Janel Young is a Pittsburgh native, painter, muralist and community leader on a mission to inspire through creativity and play. Her work has been recognized locally and internationally, from New York City – where she resided for 6 years – to the coast of Sydney, Australia. Prior to pursuing art full-time, Janel attended Schenley High School as an International Baccalaureate student athlete, and went on to study Business Marketing and International Studies at Penn State University as a Bunton-Waller Fellow. She relocated to NYC in 2013 to work in public relations as a Digital Content Strategist for industries, including healthcare, tech and non-profits for 5 years. A year after taking the leap to practice art full-time in NYC, Janel's passions came full circle in 2019 as her love for visual arts brought her back to Beltzhoover (her old neighborhood) to install the city's first art basketball court, cleverly coined: The Home Court Advantage Project. The City of Pittsburgh awarded Janel a proclamation for her community-centered effort to wrap the city in color, making October 23, 2019 “JANEL YOUNG DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh. On the anniversary the following year, Janel established the JY Originals Scholarship for Creatives – a $1,000 award for a young adult pursuing the arts. Now serving as the Community Artist in Residence at UrbanKind Institute in Pittsburgh, Janel utilizes visual arts as a communication tool to connect people to equity and justice values and initiatives. She continues to use both Pittsburgh and New York networks for public art projects, youth workshops and speaking opportunities. Janel's latest public works in Pittsburgh include the “Pathway to Joy” asphalt mural at Allegheny Overlook, her first curated project, “New Space Spheres” (both commissioned by Pittsburgh Downtown Partnerships), and “Heroes on the Horizon” at Bakery Square, which is the first three-dimensional mural under her belt. Pathway to Joy is now Young's largest led mural and it kicked off the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival serving as the backdrop for the summer 2021 pop-up park experience. For New Space Spheres she led the creation of social distance artwork from four additional Pittsburgh artists for a total of 10 designs that express physical distancing and the new societal space we are in, with a colorful twist. Heroes on the Horizon was completed alongside a residency program with students from local schools, Lincoln and Urban Academy. In New York, Young was selected to exhibit in the “Black Lives to the Front” art showcase during the 2020 U.S. Open tennis tournament. Her canvas titled “Be Open To…” was displayed in the front row of the Arthur Ashe Stadium behind the likes of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. Additionally, Janel was chosen to execute the “Gates of Atlantic” security gate mural in East New York, Brooklyn (on Atlantic Avenue). She was paired with a local small business, Gardenia Flower Shop, for a floral design that inspires passersby to keep blooming. Furthermore, Janel teamed up with youth-focused organizations to host in-person and virtual coloring events, where her self-illustrated Color Your Crown natural hair coloring book was donated to kids. She worked with sponsors and supporters from New York non-profit KaleidoQueens, Pittsburgh-based Learning Loft, YMCA, Neighborhood Allies and the Women & Girls Foundation. https://www.janel-young.com/home https://www.janel-young.com/the-arts https://jyoriginals.bigcartel.com/ IG: @jy.originals --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/otherborderwall/message

Just south of the World Trade Center district sits the location of a forgotten Manhattan immigrant community. Curious outsiders called it "Little Syria" although the residents themselves would have known it as the Syrian Colony. Starting in the 1880s people from the Middle East began arriving at New York's immigrant processing station -- immigrants from Greater Syria which at that time was a part of the Ottoman Empire.  The Syrians of Old New York were mostly Christians who brought their trades, culture and cuisine to the streets of lower Manhattan. And many headed over to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn as well, creating another district for Middle Eastern American culture which would outlast the older Manhattan area. Who were these Syrian immigrants who made their home here in New York? Why did they arrive? What were their lives like? And although Little Syria truly is long gone, what buildings remain of this extraordinary district? PLUS: A visit to Sahadi's, a fine food shop that anchors today's remaining Middle Eastern scene in Brooklyn. Greg and Tom head to their warehouse in Sunset Park to get some insight on the shop's historic connections to the first Syrian immigrants.  Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/boweryboys See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Did you know that The earliest documented use of the name "Rhode Island" was in 1637 by Roger Williams? The name was officially applied to the island in 1644 with these words: "Aquethneck shall be henceforth called the Isle of Rodes or Rhode-Island." Now, we turn our feature story…. The Recreation Department says it's time to get a move on. With that advice in mind, the department has organized a March Move-A-Thon. The March 7 event will include both outdoor and indoor activities at the Bradford School. Planned activities include jump rope challenges, basketball skills sessions, pickleball, ping pong and open gym time. Relays on eight ergometer rowing machines the department acquired recently are also scheduled. A $31,000 Take It Outside Grant from the state, which the department applied for in January, will be used to help pay for the event, the rowing machines and other equipment, including a few 10-foot-by-20-foot tents.  Julia Beasley, interim director of the Recreation Department and former olympic rower, told us that "We've been encouraging people to stay outdoors despite the winter. It's safer to be outside during COVID," "Hopefully the ergometers will allow people to feel what it's like to row, and then hopefully in the summer they will have a chance to get out on the water," she said. The grant is also being used to purchase seven kayak racks that the department plans to deploy at shoreline access points throughout the town including the town beach parking lots on the Winnapuag Pond side of Atlantic Avenue. "I've been trying to promote access to the water and more public use of facilities to allow for recreation along shores of ponds, rivers and Westerly's beaches," The March Move-A-Thon is scheduled for March 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee is $10 per person or $20 per family. The event is for all ages. Registration and face masks are required. To register, go to westerlyrec.com. Those who bring a canned food item for those in need will qualify for a prize. KOMO: Police make allegations of intimidation, extortion inside Capitol Hill's Autonomous Zone And that lack of an organized leadership is hampering efforts to bring back some normalcy to the area and have officers return to the precinct said Deanna Nolette, Seattle Assistant Police Chief. Nolette said her department and other city departments are trying to find the leaders of the CHAZ to negotiate a roadmap for the area’s immediate future. She said police are receiving reports of armed people manning the check points intimidating people trying to enter. “While Washington is an open carry state, there is no legal right for those arms to be used intimidate community members," Nolette said. Nolette said operating a citizen checkpoint on a public street is illegal. “We have heard anecdotally of citizens and businesses being asked to pay a fee to operate within this area, this is crime of extortion," Nolette said. Activist Who Helped Create ‘Police No Go Zone’ Complains When Their Food Is Stolen (PHOTO) An activist who claimed to have helped establish the self-declared Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), a six-block area in downtown Seattle, took to Twitter to complain about the community’s food being stolen. The 18-year-old activist appears to be a transgender woman and a self-described “lesbian anarchist,” according to her now-private Twitter account. The activist tweeted Wednesday that CHAZ had invited homeless people into the zone, who promptly stole all of their food. The activist pleaded on Twitter for people to bring an assortment of foods, including vegan meat substitutes and soy products, stating that they would “need more food to keep the area operational.” 5-D -- FLYNN UPDATE: - Justice Department dropping Flynn case is 'a gross abuse of prosecutorial power,' court-appointed lawyer says  *A former federal judge appointed to review the Justice Department's motion to dismiss criminal charges against President Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn said there was evidence of a "gross abuse" of prosecutorial power and that the request should be denied. Former U.S. District Judge John Gleeson said in a filing Wednesday the government "has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President" and argued that Flynn had committed perjury.  - Court-appointed attorney says judge should block DOJ move to drop Flynn case  John Gleeson, the attorney and retired judge who was appointed by Judge Emmet Sullivan to submit a brief discussing whether federal prosecutors should be able to dismiss their case against Michael Flynn, insisted in a filing Wednesday that not only does Sullivan have the authority to reject the government’s request but he should do so. The Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure state that prosecutors may dismiss a case “with leave of court.” At issue in the Flynn case now is exactly what level of discretion this gives the court. Gleeson argues that it covers the current situation, claiming that federal prosecutors gave a pretext for why they want to drop the case. “Leave of court should not be granted when the explanations the Government puts forth are not credible as the real reasons for its dismissal of a criminal charge,” Gleeson wrote in his amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) brief, alleging that prosecutors’ reasoning is “riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact” and should not justify dismissal. “[T]he rule empowers courts to protect the integrity of their own proceedings from prosecutors who undertake corrupt, politically motivated dismissals. That is what has happened here. The Government has engaged in highly irregular conduct to benefit a political ally of the President.” Attorney General Bill Barr disputes this. In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, he claimed that Sullivan was encroaching on the Justice Department’s authority. “The argument is that it's always been understood that decisions whether to pursue an individual through the prosecution process or holding them criminally accountable is vested in the executive branch and not the courts,” Barr said. “And he is essentially, in our view, trying to set himself up as an alternative prosecutor.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/counsel-appointed-by-flynn-judge-says-court-should-block-doj-move-to-drop-charges 5-E -- MERRIAM WEBSTER CHANGING DEFINITION OF RACISM: US dictionary Merriam-Webster to change its definition of racism American dictionary Merriam-Webster will change its definition of the word racism at the suggestion of a young Black woman who wanted it to better reflect the oppression of people of colour. Kennedy Mitchum, a recent graduate of Drake University in Iowa, contacted Merriam-Webster, which has published its dictionaries since 1847, to propose updating the term. "I basically told them that they need to include that there's a systematic oppression upon a group of people," she told the local CBS affiliate KMOV. "It's not just, 'Oh, I don't like someone.'" Merriam-Webster's editorial manager, Peter Sokolowski, confirmed to AFP that the definition would be modified after Mitchum's request. 6-A -- TRUMP AGAINST CHANGING NAMES OF CONFEDERATE NAMED BASES: *President Trump says he is ruling out changing the name of Army bases named for Confederate Army officers. Kayleigh McEnany Turns Base Renaming Question Around On The Biden Welcome Center (VIDEO) McEnany brought up the movie “Gone With The Wind,” no longer available on HBO, and asked if George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison should be “erased from history” because of their views. “What about FDR, because of internment camps?” she asked. “Should he be erased from history, or Lyndon Johnson, who has a history of documented racist statements." Then, the White House press secretary took aim at Biden: “Finally, what about people that are alleged by the media to be segregationists?” said McEnany. “NBC tells us Joe Biden didn’t just compromise with segregationists, he fought for their causes in schools, experts say. CNN tells us letters from Joe Biden reveal how he sought support of segregationists in the fight against busing. Washington Post tells us that Biden’s tough talk on 1970 schools’ desegregation plans could get him new scrutiny. And there are several more where that came from. So I’ll leave you with a question. Following HBO Cancellation, ‘Gone With The Wind’ Is The #1 Best-Selling Movie On Amazon HBO Max pulled “Gone with the Wind,” the 1939 film that’s been called “the biggest blockbuster in American history,” from its library of streaming films. It quickly shot to the top of the list of best-selling movies and TV shows on Amazon. Other editions of the film also made the top-ten list on Amazon Wednesday, ranking #8 and #9. It’s also at the top of the “Romance” category on Amazon. The movie won 10 Academy Awards, one of which was earned by Hattie McDaniel, making her the first African-American to be nominated for and win an Oscar. UPDATE: ‘Gone With the Wind’ will eventually return to HBO with a denouncement of its racist depictions.  An HBO Max spokesperson says “Gone With the Wind” will eventually return to the platform with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of its racist depictions.  On Tuesday, HBO Max removed the 1939 film from its library in the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd. “’Gone With The Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Variety. “These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions, but will be presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history.” 6-E -- COROANVIRUS AND SEX: Journalist JOSH BARRO: NYC Health advice discourages casual sex during COVID, but also says if you’re going to have it: “Be creative with sexual positions and physical barriers, like walls, that allow sexual contact while preventing close face to face contact.” ROBBY SOAVE: NYC's Official Guide to Pandemic Sex Is Awkward but Accurate. The health department correctly recognizes that abstinence doesn't work, and kissing is riskier than sex.  Coronavirus dictates from public health officials and government bureaucrats have been confusing, contradictory, and arbitrary for months now.  As compliance with aggressive social distancing begins to slip, officials must pivot toward offering scientifically sound advice about what kinds of activities carry risk, rather than doubling down on impractical and wide-ranging lockdowns. Thankfully, New York City's recently published guidance on "safer sex and COVID-19" is a remarkably sober—and, yes, awkwardly descriptive—piece of realistic guidance. While it acknowledges that the absolutely safest course of action would be to refrain from sex, it also accepts that abstinence-only education does not work. People are going to get together and they're going to get it on. The best thing that the experts can do is educate people about how to make these activities less risky. To that end, the three-page document correctly notes that kissing might be a riskier amorous activity than actual sex, given that respiratory droplets are the most effective vehicles of disease transmission. (This is an inversion of standard safe sex practices: Kissing generally carries little risk of spreading STDs.)  - LAST WEEK: Study says couples should wear MASKS during sex  Harvard experts say couples who are not quarantining together should wear FACE MASKS during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus Sexual partners should consider wearing face masks that cover their noses and mouths while doing the deed. While the advice sounds like something out of a Cosmopolitan magazine guide for spicing things up in the bedroom, it is actually a suggestion from Harvard University researchers, who have offered up a guide on sexual health in the era of COVID-19. The guide, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last month, suggests that couples who are not quarantining together but remain sexually active consider not kissing on the mouth and wearing protective face masks during sex to prevent the spread of coronavirus. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8384891/Couples-arent-quarantining-avoid-kissing-wear-FACE-MASKS-says-study.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus 6-F -- VIRGINIA / COLUMBUS STATUE TOPPLED: - Richmond protesters topple Columbus statue, throw it in lake RICHMOND, Va. After the figure was removed from its pedestal around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by protesters using several ropes, a sign that reads, “Columbus represents genocide” was placed on the spray-painted foundation that once held the statue. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration opposes a Democratic proposal to extend a $600 per week federal unemployment benefit approved in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia said Tuesday. The $600 payment, which is in addition to normal unemployment benefits, "was the right thing to do,'' Scalia said, but is no longer needed as the economy begins to recover. The money, included in a government relief package enacted in late March, has helped millions of workers stay in their homes and pay bills even as the unemployment rate surged to its highest levels since World War II. The payments are set to expire July 31, and Democrats have pushed a plan that would extend the enhanced benefit through January. The Democratic-led House approved the proposal last month, but it is considered unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled Senate. https://wjla.com/news/nation-world/democratic-proposal-of-extending-600-weekly-unemployment-benefit-oppposed-by-trump-admin PUSH FOR MORE DIRECT RELIEF PAYMENTS: Mnuchin: White House will 'seriously look at' sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday the Trump administration will "seriously look" at sending another round of direct cash payments to some Americans in the fourth coronavirus relief package. "I think we’re going to seriously look at whether we want to do more direct money to stimulate the economy," Mnuchin said while testifying before the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. "But I think this is all going to be about getting people back to work, and we look forward to working with the entire Senate on this one." At the end of March, Congress passed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, approving one-time payments of up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples. There's also an extra $500 payment for each dependent child under the age of 17. The payments were tapered for individuals who earned more than $75,000 and cut-off completely for those earning more than $99,000 https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/mnuchin-trump-admin-to-seriously-look-at-more-direct-payments-in-next-coronavirus-relief-package House Republicans propose offering Americans a 'return to work bonus': Republicans say the bonus could encourage people to "return to work," while a top Democrat rejected it as a replacement for extending emergency UIHouse Republicans are proposing a $1,200 bonus for Americans returning to work as the coronavirus pandemic slows, providing an alternative to Democrats' plan to extend the extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits included in virus-related stimulus legislation..  Republicans on the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee cited an analysis from CBO to support their idea, instead of extending the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit past its July 31 end date. “The extension of the additional $600 per week would probably reduce employment in the second half of 2020, and it would reduce employment in calendar year 2021. The effects from reduced incentives to work would be larger than the boost to employment from increased overall demand for goods and services," reads the CBO analysis.  According to the GOP committee members, the federal expansion of unemployment benefits was "intended to provide relief for those who lost their jobs due to the government lockdown— but these funds shouldn’t undermine a return to work. Rather than continue subsidizing unemployment where it is no longer necessary, these funds can be put to more appropriate use in encouraging workers to return to work." Some congressional Republicans have argued that the extra federal compensation — on top of state weekly unemployment payments — is more than some Americans earned at their jobs before the COVID-19 pandemic.  https://justthenews.com/government/congress/house-republicans-propose-offering-americans-return-work-bonus   ================================================================= Mornings on the Mall Podcast - 2020-6-11 [00:00:00] 4:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [01:00:15] 5:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [02:00:25] 6:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [03:00:34] 7:59 am - Mornings on the Mall [04:00:46] 8:59 am - Mornings on the Mall

Good Law | Bad Law - Talking About Racism: A Conversation w/ Alvin Bragg, Kristen Clarke, and Victoria Davis

BLACK LIVES MATTER.   How do we change the culture?   Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by three remarkable guests to discuss the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement, police brutality and accountability, the murder of George Floyd, white supremacy and privilege, our country’s systematic and systemic racist structure, and more. Joining Aaron for today’s critically important conversation is Alvin Bragg, a law professor and most recently the Chief Deputy Attorney General in the New York State Office of the Attorney General, Kristen Clarke, President and Executive Director of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and Victoria Davis, a Community Activist and Leader who lost her brother, Delrawn Small, to senseless police violence in 2016.   Like Delrawn, George Floyd was a son, a father, a brother, and a friend. Floyd is the most recent name on a far too-long list of people stolen away from their families, friends and communities. In today’s episode, Aaron, Victoria, Kristen, and Alvin delve into the deep-seated roots of racism in our country, the issues of police abuse, brutality, militarization and accountability, the importance of solidarity, education, honesty and understanding, as well as how we move forward. How do we talk about racism? How do we dismantle white supremacy? How do we make change? What fills the silence if we don’t speak out and stand up?    Alvin Bragg has spent the better part of two decades in the courtroom, standing up to the powerful and fighting to get justice. A graduate from Harvard Law, Alvin joined New York Law School in 2019 as a Visiting Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Racial Justice Project. Professor Bragg’s research focuses on the intersection of criminal law and civil rights, prosecutorial discretion and accountability, and the functions of state Attorneys General. Most recently, Alvin served as Chief Deputy Attorney General in the New York State Office of the Attorney General. In that role, he reported directly to the Attorney General, helped set the office’s investigation and litigation priorities, and oversaw the work of the Criminal Justice and Social Justice Divisions.   Kristen Clarke, President and Executive Director of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, leads one of the country’s most important national civil rights organizations in the pursuit of equal justice for all. Throughout her career, Ms. Clarke has focused on work that seeks to strengthen our democracy by combating discrimination faced by African Americans and other marginalized communities. Kristen formerly served as the head of the Civil Rights Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s office, where she led broad civil rights enforcement on matters including criminal justice issues, education and housing discrimination, fair lending, barriers to reentry, voting rights, immigrant’s rights, general inequality, disability rights, reproductive access and LGBT issues.   On July 4, 2016 Delrawn Small was killed on Atlantic Avenue in East New York. His sister, Victoria Davis, is a staunch community activist and leader for police accountability in New York and continues to share her brother’s memory and story with the world in the hopes of demanding accountability, and maybe one day justice.     To learn more about Alvin Bragg, please visit his website here. You can also find his bio page at New York Law School here.   To learn more about Kristen Clarke, please visit her bio page here. LeVelle Moton recently had his jersey retired by NC Central University, where he starred as a basketball player and is now the head coach. After leading his team to 3 NCAA Tournaments, he is one of the most recognized coaches at (and advocates for) an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). His team was recently featured in a great ESPN story on the not-so-glorious road on the life for smaller athletic programs. His phone includes numbers to some of the best basketball players in the world--LeBron James, Chris Paul, etc--with whom he regularly communicates. We could talk basketball with him for hours. So, of course, we covered NONE of those things in our hour-long chat with him. Instead, we listened to LeVelle tell his inspirational, and sometimes horrifying, story of how he came to Raleigh and grew up on the east side of town. Whether he was at the Boys and Girls Club, which his mother approved of, or at the small park near his house, which she decidedly did NOT approve of, he was learning from his environment and also learning how to move beyond it. We talked with LeVelle about his life experience and how that shaped who he is and how he's chosen to give back to his community. Before the interview, we discuss the upcoming NC primary election, the passing of an influential musician from Raleigh, and and new development being planned off Atlantic Avenue near Whitaker Mill Road. And we discuss some of Raleigh's best "small" parks.Special thanks to our sponsor, Steele Residential--check them out for buying, selling or renting!Subscribe/rate Podcast Raleigh on your favorite podcast sites:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/podcast-raleigh/id1458907220Google: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Inzk5woxrsjwf3zhd5vv3av4yeiStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcast-raleighSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6b3dVvLJfO0EqvDGQaFTAP?si=QrcfEq8WSE2h3aEZSGV0pQ

New York City architects Abby Suckle and William Singer are the authors of Cocktails and Conversations: Dialogues in Architectural Design.  AIA New York’s Center for Architecture has a great Friday night format:  invite people to to hear a famous architect paired with a master bartender who creates a custom cocktail to share with a thirsty audience.  Architects have included David Adjaye, Jeanne Gang, Peter Gluck, Frank Harmon, Tom Kundig, Daniel Libeskind, Eric Owen Moss, Billie Tsien, and Tod Williams, among many others. Host George Smart spoke with Abby and William at the Long Island Bar, 110 Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn. Joining them were David Moo and Toby Cecchini (inventor of the Cosmopolitan!), master bartenders behind all the cocktail creations.   About a month later, George and co-host Tom Guild met Australian Phillip Jones, the Martini Whisperer, poolside at the swanky Hotel Skylark in Palm Springs. For over a dozen years Jones worked as a fine dining manager and ran restaurants and events companies around the world.  Then he created a website for lovers of Martinis, craft spirits and cocktail culture with an Australian point of view.  In 2015 he gave the first ever TED talk on the Martini. And as he was leaving the Eau du Vie bar in Melbourne one fateful night, a lovely gang of actresses approached ....

What kind of capitalist are you? Did you play Monopoly for hours with your family in hopes of owning all the land and hoarding all the money? Guess what? That's not how the game was originally meant to be played. And remember the sweet story of the inventor of Monopoly, Charles Darrow, a poor man, destitute and desperate to support his wife and children on a lowly electrician's salary-only to come to amazing riches once he invented and sold the exciting game of Monopoly to the Parker Brothers monopoly? That's not how the game was originally invented either.  It was all the works of the brilliant Lizzie Magie, who owned the patent for the Landlord's Game-the original monopoly game, which by the way included the anti-monopoly version.  Join us for the tale of Lizzie, a woman who is very likely related to Beth, and a woman who said one of our most favorite quotes ever, "I'm glad I was taught how to think, not what to think." We'll speak to Linda K. Jacobs, a descendant of New York's Syrian Colony and author of Strangers in the West as she helps us to explore the history of this vibrant community. But you can't mention Syrian food in New York without mentioning the James Beard award-winning Sahadi's grocery store, now over a hundred years old! We'll trace the history of the Sahadi family from their arrival in New York to their iconic grocery store in Little Syria, located on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. We'll walk in cookbook author Tracey Ceurvels' footsteps as she prepares a delicious recipe using ingredients from the numerous locally owned Middle-Eastern shops in this neighborhood, the heart of the Syrian and Lebanese New York community today. It was such a pleasure to catch up with my 8th guests (Cohen Robinson, Patrick Watkins, and Myles “Trufe” Robinson) after watching them wow the crowd at the Sets in the West Neighborhood Block Party this past Friday off of 5th Avenue in Delray! Not only did they put on a fantastic show, but they also showcased an even wider variety of talent—this time including reggae (http://www.PaulAnthonyReggae.com) and spoken word (@ByrdPoetry) performers, a full band, and Uzi—a local rap artist who joined us on this episode. We last recorded a podcast back on December 20th, 2014 after they opened up for Vanilla Ice; and, to see how much their musicianship has continued to accelerate was phenomenal. There was a quintessential Florida storm brewing that caused a power outage and eventually cut the set short; but, these guys didn’t miss a beat or let the energy drop. They made what could have been a complete bummer into a really beautiful moment. This episode starts off in my car with Cohen and Uzi on our way to the post-performance celebration, and we end up at Salt Seven off Atlantic Avenue. We had a fantastic time kicking back over cocktails and calamari as they basked in the afterglow of the stage. They are true professionals and even truer friends. You’re going to love this podcast!! Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a couple of special treats and to look out for their EP coming out soon.  East New York is the starting point for Mayor de Blasio's vision to rezone much of the city with a central goal: more affordable housing. So what's the reaction to rezoning from the people who live in East New York? Take a ride down Atlantic Avenue with Joshua Jacobo, a 29-year-old musician and aspiring music producer. Hear what it was like to grow up in the neighborhood -- and what it's like to survive there now, feeling the pressure of rising rents and real estate speculation. Sit in the office with Boaz Gilad, a developer who started working in Brooklyn a decade ago. He'll tell you what it takes to move into East New York this early. The de Blasio administration says it will take years for the neighborhood to develop but the action is already on. Just ask Pastor David Benke and his parishioners at St. Peter's Lutheran Church: unsolicited offers for their homes are pouring in. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.

In Episode 1,  ABC Gotham's amateur historians, Kate and Kathleen, discuss the Atlantic Avenue Tunnel.  Built in 1844, closed under suspicious circumstances in 1861, rediscovered in 1980, and then closed in 2010 AGAIN under suspicious circumstance, there's definitely something going on here.  This star- studded story includes contributions from Walt Whitman, John Wilkes Booth, H. P. Lovecraft, Bob Diamond, AND Electus Litchfield.  (Who's Electus Litchfield?  Tune in the find out!)
