Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back as Liverpool sit pretty at the top of the league, eight points clear of everyone after just a dozen games. It's a good time to be a Red. The match that put the Reds eight points clear was a 3-2 win over Southampton, the Reds carrying on where they left off before the latest international break. As Jay and Jim discuss, it wasn't a game where the best of Slot's LFC was showcased for 90 minutes, but the job got done and the points came home. Arne has commented many times on how good a squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp, and for this one he needed them to draw on one of the qualities they arguably needed more often under the former boss – the ability to bounce back from setbacks, self-inflicted or otherwise. With one referee currently sat out from football, as an investigation takes place into an infamous video shared on social media, it wasn't unreasonable for Liverpool fans to expect some decent refereeing, for PGMOL to ask for special effort from those they assigned to this game. Luckily no Reds fans held their breath on that. Two penalties, one for each side, and obviously both sets of fans will differ on the fairness of them, but there were a few incidents that raised eyebrows. Jay wonders how Adam Lallana stayed on the pitch, an incident that got much less of a mention than it might have done had it been the other way round, but as Jim points out, PGMOL have made their own rules up on how VAR should be enforced, which is essentially making it toothless. After the game Mo Salah made a point of stopping to speak to reporters as the players headed to board the team bus, letting it be known that he could be on his way soon, because he doesn't want to retire but he hasn't got a club for next season, at least as it stands. “We are almost in December, and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club,” he told reporters. Obviously, football isn't the only game players have to play when contracts are up for renewal, and as Jim explains in the podcast, the wording of what Salah said is important, and it's more likely that his agent is yet to receive an offer he feels is worth putting in front of the player. If it did turn out there was no offer from the club to keep him, after spending no money in the summer, there'd be mutiny amongst fans. As Jay predicts, there are some big games coming up at Anfield where the volume will be loud, and fans will make it clear how important it is that the club do what's needed to hang onto Mo, not to mention Virgil. Trent won't be involved against the club the rumours keep linking him too, but he's also close to being able to talk to other clubs. Coverage ahead of that game, against Real Madrid, is already including talk of the Spanish side being down a number of key players, much like the talk about Man City and Arsenal. Liverpool had two keepers on the bench on Sunday, a sign of the lack of options available to Slot, and are missing first-choice players in the shape of Alisson, Trent and Jota, not to mention some of the players that might rotate in to rest the legs of the others. Yet we don't seem to hear about that when the rest of the media talks about injuries. As for the Real Madrid game itself, Jim points to how different this one is to past meetings. This isn't a vital group game, it definitely isn't a final, and the Reds are top of the elongated league table. So, does give this the Reds a chance to play this fixture without the obvious nerves that have been on show the last couple of times they met? Jay goes one step further, saying that with such a huge game coming up after it, Man City at home in the Premier League on Sunday, Slot would do well to use it as an opportunity to prepare for that. Harvey Elliott made the squad but not the pitch on Sunday, could this be a time for him to get a run out? Plenty to discuss as always, because this is Liverpool. Learn more about your ad choices. That despite Italian champions Inter handing Jurgen Klopp's side a first defeat at Anfield in 12 months. John Murray, Dion Dublin and Adam Lallana have their say on whether the tie was as close as the aggregate scoreline suggested and whether Liverpool managed the second leg as well as they might have done. Italian football expert Mina Rzouki also joins the pod to question Simone Inzaghi's risk-averse approach once his side had been reduced to 10 men. We also mark another record-breaking night in the competition for Bayern's Robert Lewandowski whilst Aaron Paul has the story of another thumping win for Fulham as they march towards the Championship title.

Greetings Footballlanders! After another fruitful meeting at Footballland HQ we are pleased to announce THREE new rides. OK, so one of them is just Chris Kamara solving park problems, so let's call it TWO new rides and ONE important piece of park infrastructure! This week the world's 2nd greatest footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, returns to the park (after being fired off into space) with The Ronaldon't, a ride which challenges guests to be as far removed from Cristiano as humanly possible. Which led us to ask ourselves, who is the football opposite of CR7? Royston Drenthe? Steve Claridge? Gazza? Plus, Frank Lampard's interview technique of laughing then turning immediately serious has been rollercoasterised with the Frank Lampard Lol-lercoaster. There's admittedly not much to this ride - it's over very quickly, but the science of getting people to laugh and then be terrified in less than a second is pored over in great detail. Which leads us to our third reveal of the week. It gives us great pleasure to welcome Chris Kamara as park manager, helped by his two assistants Adam Lallana and Said Benrahma on llamas up a giant set of stairs on wheels. Chris will look out for problems at footballland, which always seem to happen when he's not looking in the right place. Thankfully the Dalai Lama will be on hand to help with the things he's missed. Please keep sending us your ride ideas! We feature them all! Lots of love, Anthony, Mark and Ryan xSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/footballland. During quarantine I was asked if I would do a video interview for the West Canada Soccer Academy as part of their Player Development Master Class Series as a technical development expert.   I was interviewed by my old friend Jason Blake who I worked with at Southampton FC. Jason went onto work at AFC Bournemouth, Burnley and now is Technical Director at the West Canada Soccer Academy and Red Deer Dome.    The audio was taken for this Extra Time (The Inner Huddle) podcast and all 15 questions with timings are below. I hope you enjoy it.   (2:40) We know each other from when we both worked at Southampton FC. Can you just give us a little insight to who you are and your journey that's got you to where you are today from a coaching point of view, and what's really got yourself a good knowledge and experience around technical development?   (5:50) When we were young we used to play in the street. What does street soccer look like now for young players?   (8:39) With your background of working in the pre academy at Southampton FC, how young does that go down to initially?   (9:03) With players of that age what would you be encouraging the players to be doing in the foundation phase and pre academy?   (11:03) At the risk of name dropping, I want to mention some of the players I know you've done some work with, 3 England Internationals, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain & Jay Rodriguez.  With Adam Lallana in mind, how would talk about the basics of what Adam did with you and how does it trace back to work you would do with a 6 or 7 year old?   (14:41) How important is technical competence to help you through the challenges of maybe not being a physical size yet when you're playing against people that are perhaps a bit bigger?   (18:32) Can we pick your brains about futsal and also what would the main reason be to use futsal balls as opposed to normal soccer balls?   (21: 25) If grass roots clubs are training in a school gym or sports hall, is that sufficient to do futsal training?   (23:04) Is there a difference in the type of ball used for futsal and does it make a difference when learning new skills and practicing them?   (24:30) How appropriate is technical training across all age groups, is it equally important regardless of what age they re up to adults?   (27:53) With regards to pitch sizes, we have a wide range of size within the FIFA regulations for 7 v 7 pitches. What are the benefits or challenges of being on the smaller side of the regulations?    (32:41) For the younger players in our region, how should they think about their technical development depending on the position they play in?   (37:30) A three part question: When is it ok to teach children tricks with the ball? Once we learn those new tricks how can we be confident enough to do them in games? How can we as players train during quarantine time so that we can keep getting better?   (40:46) For the older players that might be a central defender should they be given a different type of technical work during this period?   (45:37) Summary for coaches, parents and players and key messages to take away.   If you have any further questions then please contact me at perry@pezzazstreetsoccer.com or visit www.pezzazstreetsoccer.com
