Her October scans showed new tumors in the pleura (lining) of her lungs which aren't responding to her Tagrisso gene therapy medicine. They'll be doing a biopsy to see if they can tell why it is resistant and perhaps there is another drug they can try. Since that will take about a month before we have results, she'll be starting chemotherapy in the meantime. 1st infusion on November 4th. Send out all those good wishes. Sharon of Knit Style Yarns just released her first pattern- Celtic Christmas Cowl ($5 knitting pattern available on Ravelry) & kindly gifted me a copy. Thank you Sharon & congrats! I went to see Sweeney Todd at Company Theater with Mom, Terri & Emelyn. My cousin Colleen got married last weekend! She looked beautiful. The wedding was perfect. They had cider donuts instead of wedding cake! Mom & my 94 year old Aunt Florence who also has cancer, set Colleen's wedding as their goal and they were both there with big smiles and so much energy. Dancing and laughing. We are all so grateful for that. Colin and Nora whooping it up on the dance floor. Colleen & her Dad dancing in the trolley all the way back to the hotel with Dan and my cousin Joanie's husband using their phone flashlights to create a strobe effect! Oisin and Dan working to cut and stack wood. Made Oisin a batch of applesauce even though I haven't had time to teach him how to make it yet. My cousins sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Total surprise. 20 years at my day job. Dinner celebration postponed but Dan and I look forward to going to that in early 2023. I got to pick out a gift from an online catalog. I picked an Air Fryer so hit me with your best vegetarian air fryer recipes! Our contractor starting putting new railings on our deck. We attended my cousins (Pat & Kevin's) joint Surprise Costume Birthday Party. Mom, Dad, Dan and I dressed up in a Little Mermaid Theme! We saw a local production of Guys & Dolls. Megg is a Hot Box Dancer. Oisin was a Gambler. They were both great! Quote of the Week There is the touch of November in the air, chill enough to have a slight tang, like properly aged cider. Not air that caresses, nor yet air that nips. Air that makes one breathe deeply and think of spring water and walk briskly. -Hal Borland Contact Information: Check out the Down Cellar Studio Patreon! In 2018, Monica Bourgeau felt compelled to write a book that would help people come to a basic understanding about our common, “wicked” problems, and how to help create solutions. Her October, 2014 article on Huffington Post, “7 Ways You Can Change the World”, continues to grab views, and she was hearing from readers that the article made a big difference for them. Her original plan was to expand on that article, share stories about each of those seven ideas, and make the book not just inspiring, but actionable. Though her vision didn’t falter, it did shift as she started writing the book. She was introduced to the theory of Spiral Dynamics, pioneered by psychologist Dr. Clare W. Graves, when an announcement was made following a church service as she sat with her daughter one Sunday. There would be a six-week workshop on the theory, which focuses on how our communities develop in terms of self-actualization and community values, and offers a visual representation of why those matter. Monica was immediately intrigued, though she had never heard of Spiral Dynamics before. She signed up to participate and committed to attending every session, despite her already hectic schedule between work and home life. Through that program, she started to piece together the relationship between her original article and the concepts of Spiral Dynamics. Over the next few months, she fell deeply into research, interviews, and storytelling around the theory - but what was most important to her was uncovering how to apply it to bring people together. The key to the theory isn't necessarily to understand each of the waves Dr. Graves describes, but to grow into a sense of non-judgment when considering where people are on that spectrum of self-actualization, values, and motivation in order to connect and collaborate. It's really about how to adjust our conversations to consider the people in front of us and the environment that shaped them. This is the only way to develop trust and to develop solutions for the complex, extremely polarizing issues facing our global population. Monica’s book, The Change Code, was recommended to me by my dear friend Andy Hedges, who happens to live near Sydney, Australia, and whom I’ve never actually met in person. We connected on LinkedIn years ago and became close friends despite the distance. When he suggested I read the book, I didn’t hesitate, and I’m so glad for that recommendation. As I read it, I realized Monica was on to something, and I reached out to ask her to be a guest on my podcast as soon as I finished reading the book. As small-world as it gets, I looked her up on LinkedIn to find that she grew up here in Montana, and that we have quite a few mutual local connections. As we started to chat for this episode, we realized we had even more in common, including an overlap in Fort Collins, Colorado in the early 90s. I hope you enjoy this conversation so much that you are compelled to pick up her book, connect with her on LinkedIn, and start thinking about how to apply what you learn in the book to your conversations with people from completely different environments and upbringing.

FINANCIAL ABUSE: ONE WOMAN’S STORY When most people hear the words “domestic violence,” they think of broken bones and bruises. Some people are aware that intimate partner abuse comes in many forms, from verbally degrading a partner, to isolation, to all kinds of control. One of those forms of control is financial abuse. Unless you have experienced financial abuse and control, it is really hard to grasp the impact of it. Controllers control, and they can interfere with a woman’s ability to get to work, or look for a job, or interfere with her employer or work performance until she gets fired. Sometimes abusers apply for credit cards in the victim’s name without their knowing about it; sometimes they run up huge debts, or cancel accounts or credit cards without telling the victim. And often that control continues after divorce, after kids grow up, and even when the victim has no money to gain control over. That’s what happened with Coral Anika Theill, author of “BONSHEÁ Making Light of the Dark” which has been used as a college text. She is also a contributing writer for Leatherneck Magazine and Short Rations for Marines. Her October 2011 Leatherneck Magazine article, "Invisible Battle Scars: Confronting the Stigma Associated with PTS & TBI," is cited in the U.S. Army War College "Psychological Health Notes." She is a recipient of the Lester Granger Award from the National Montford Point Marine Association and a Writer's Award from iUniverse Publishing Company. Join us as Coral tells us her story of abuse during her marriage and her continued financial abuse after her divorce.
Inna Faliks presents works from Schubert, Beethoven, Carter, Birtwistle and Liszt! FROM THE PIANOFORTE WEBSITE “Adventurous and passionate” (The New Yorker) Ukrainian-born pianist Inna Faliks has established herself as one of the most exciting, committed, communicative and poetic artists of her generation. Faliks has made a name for herself through her commanding performances of standard piano repertoire, as well genre-bending, interdisciplinary projects, and inquisitive work with contemporary composers. After her acclaimed teenage debuts at the Gilmore Festival and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, she has performed on many of the world’s great stages, with numerous orchestras, in solo appearances, and with conductors such as Leonard Slatkin and Keith Lockhart. Faliks is currently Professor of Piano and Head of Piano at UCLA. Critics call her “a concert pianist of the highest order” (Chicago WTTW), praise her “courage to take risks, expressive intensity and technical perfection” (General Anzeiger, Bonn), “remarkable insight” (Audiophile audition) “poetry and panoramic vision” (Washington Post), “riveting passion, playfulness” (Baltimore Sun) and “signature blend of lithe grace and raw power” (Lucid Culture.) Her October 2014 all-Beethoven CD release on MSR classics drew rave reviews: the disc’s preview on on WTTW called Faliks “High priestess of the piano, pianist of the highest order, as dramatic and subtle as a great stage actor.” Her previous, critically acclaimed CD on MSR Classics, Sound of Verse, was released in 2009, featuring music of Boris Pasternak, Rachmaninoff and Ravel. Her discography also includes a recital recording for the Yamaha Disklavier library. Recording projects in the works include a Brahms sonatas CD, Chopin solo and cello sonatas recording with cellist Wendy Warner, as well as “Polonaise-Fantasie, Story of a Pianist” – a recital of encores for piano combined with essays written by Faliks, to be released on the Delos label. Today’s guest, Amanda Ripley is an investigative journalist for Time Magazine and The Atlantic. Her reporting on education has explored the interaction between public policy and human behavior. In 2013 she published The Smartest Kids in the World--and How They Got That Way, a New York Times bestseller. Before I ever met Amanda, I was familiar with her work. Her October 2012 piece in Time Magazine on how massive open on-line courses were impacting higher education helped focus and shape the education policy conversation, as did her September 2013 piece in The Atlantic which focused on the outsized influence of sports in American high schools. This will be ORHigherEd’s first-ever, two-part series. Part 1 focused on Amanda’s reporting her cover story in The Atlantic titled, "The Upwardly Mobile Barista," and covered the Starbucks College Achievement Plan. Part 2 focuses on reporting she's done about education reforms around the world that have changed outcomes for students.
In part two of my conversation with Ms. Reichlen, I wanted to give her more time to talk about her position on ballet in the media. Her October 2013 interview in the Wall Street Journal started a deeper conversation about the way ballet is presented and perceived in the mainstream. Plus, she shares her views on the art of ballet in the media. Including, Sarah Jessica Parker's new project with NYCB and her thoughts on Breaking Pointe. Ballet Initiative Podcast RSS
