Hearing the word “hormones” is a bit like nails on a chalkboard to an OB/GYN. There is so much misinformation out there that it's hard not to feel skeptical about this topic. However, today's guest, Dr. Heather Rhodes, takes a balanced, science-based approach to her work that I find really refreshing. Dr. Rhodes is a holistic pharmacist with a passion for women's health. Haven't heard of a “holistic pharmacist” before? Neither had I! She'll tell you all about it in the episode - essentially it means that she's taking what she learned form pharmacology and applying it to holistic hormone healthcare. I love getting to the root cause of issues and her approach is all about treating the cause more than the symptoms. In this Episode, You'll Learn About: -Why Heather chose to classify herself as a holistic pharmacist -What made her decide to focus her work on hormone balance -Which hormones are most important for fertility and overall health -How she defines hormone balance / imbalance -Why she advocates for a combination of traditional and modern medicine -How hormones are affected by our daily choices --- Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode181 Check out The Birth Preparation Course Register for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right Way Take a quick, fun labor pain quiz

I just love when I interview someone and we share experiences that are very similar, but we didn't even know each other at all! When I talked about meditation and mindfulness this week on the Peace and Possibilities Podcast with Dr. Asha Pai Bohannon, she shared her own daily practice and how she figured out what she needed to change to begin her own healing. We don't always see new problems as opportunities to teach us, but when we can ask ourselves this question, we're so much more open to figuring it out. Asha knew she needed to make a change so she could be healthier and then she turned her pain into purpose by helping others do the same! What a way to turn your problem into an opportunity. Imagine if we could all do that! Next time something doesn't go your way, ask yourself: What is this here to teach me? It's a simple question that will yield amazing results. (No, really, "amazing" is needed here.) My buddy Neal is back to discuss what we should and shouldn't be doing to stay healthy and protect others during this Corona Virus pandemic. He also tells me about something called free bleeding, and I'll never forgive him for it.
Rethinking Holistic Care and Pharmaceuticals with Susan and Neal: Comparing big pharma and the natural product industry. Navigating the supplement shelves to find the best quality supplements. Defining your vision for your life and living true to that standard. Key Takeaways: Use medicines when appropriate and use natural products when appropriate – neither is better than the other. The best thing to do is to retain control over your own health and medicines. There is no perfect, but we all can definitely work together to get as close to perfect as possible. Neal and I reminisce about working at Beadle's Pharmacy in high school and the lady that called everyday to describe her poop. We also talk about supplements (why most are bullshit, what you need and what you don't need), taking a holistic approach to your health, and what Neal finds most attractive about me.
Dental hygiene is among the most important part of overall health and to examine why, Neal is joined by Dr. Claudia Patch. Claudia explains how exactly sugar leads to tooth decay; what the most important tooth care habits are to maintain as a bare minimum; the effect of acid on teeth; the safest way to whiten teeth; how to prevent periodontal disease; and everyone's favorite conspiracy - the truth about fluoride. Mark and Sherry talk about Superfoods to Supercharge your fall. Cranberries have a lot of health benefits, they help protect against bladder infections in women. The compounds that are in cranberries actually change the structure of the ecoli bacteria, it actually morphs the bacteria so it can't stick on the bladder wall. The best way to get the most out of cranberries it to take a supplement. Pure cranberry juice is almost impossible to drink because its so tart and therefore a lot of sugar or sweetener needs to be added to make it drinkable. Taking a cranberry supplement is a better way to avoid all the sugar. Sugar can affect the immune system and cause inflammation so it's important to not take in extra sugar while trying to get the health benefits of cranberries. Sherry Torkos, a Holistic Pharmacist, joins Mark Alyn to talk about natural medicine. Sherry was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in the 80's when she was a teenager. Im the 80's no one really knew what Celiac Disease even was, Sherry was misdiagnosed for years before doctors discovered what was really wrong with her. Once she was diagnosed the next issue was doctors didn't really even know how to treat Celiac Disease. Sherry found that eating gluten was actually damaging her the wall of her intestines and she started developing system-wide nutritional issues such as rashes, night vision loss, hair, nails, anemia etc... this was resolved once she changed her diet. She got on a gluten-free diet and began taking supplements. This whole experience as a teenager is what propelled her into the world of pharmaceuticals and eventually towards a holistic approach through supplements and diet. Sherry graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1992 and has since moved to the holistic side of pharmaceuticals. Sherry Torkos is the author of more than a dozen books.
