    What is Powerful Presence?

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2020 20:29

In this episode, we are going to discuss and clarify exactly what “presence” is. Because we can’t have the discussion on how to improve it, or build it, unless you understand what it is.When you venture off into the interworld to find a definition of presence, you’ll find a good mix. What I find interesting, and something I agree with, is that most people equate having presence with having confidence. And that makes sense, right? Having confidence means you’re comfortable in your own skin, with who you are, and what you bring to the table. When someone has presence, they have what some people refer to as having “it,” and it’s something that is innate within them and although sometimes difficult to define and articulate, you know it when you see it.So to start off, although I do agree that it can be somewhat difficult to define, that’s only because it can mean something different to each one of you. There is also sometimes a fear, a doubt, that you’ll ever be at the same level as someone with “it,” with presence. I know this because I have had many a conversation with clients, friends, peers…that “some people just have it, and man, it would be so great to have ‘it’ too…”Well, guess what. That presence you feel, that confidence that can be felt from across the room - it was learned. And if it’s learned…that means you can have it, too.

    Creating a Life of Abundance

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2020 26:43

There are 3 steps to creating a life of abundance!1. Think positively about yourself and your goals. I love the example using a car. Say you fall in love with the idea of getting and having a green car. Suddenly, every where you look, everywhere you go, you see green cars. Or you want to get married or start a family…everyone around you suddenly is engaged or pregnant. This is very simplified, but that’s how the mind works. Where you focus your attention is where your energy flows. When you dwell on what you don’t have, or how upset or disappointed you are in something or a situation, that’s what you see. That’s where you live. But if you focus on what you want, and the positive things you want to enter your life, you start thinking of ways to get it. No, it probably won’t happen overnight, but you will notice that your decisions, choices, and actions will start to naturally guide you to your goal. And what about this…do you let yourself worry about making a mistake, or a wrong choice? Do you think you should wait until the timing is “right”? Both are a waste of energy. Fear is a dream killer, and there is never is a “right” time - except for NOW. Any day can be your Day 1 - make it today. And the best part - you can change your mind, your path, or your decision, at any time! Wow, what a novel idea! The only thing written in stone is your headstone - so make your plan and execute. You’ll do great! 2. Live within your means. This isn’t just about finances - although that is a very important aspect of this point. I am also talking about all your priorities to live the life you desire - your sleep, your self-care, your schedule and time you have to spend on certain tasks and commitments, and your routines. Take back your time, and if it doesn’t support your goals, let it go. And you are sure to have conflicting goals. You have work, families, children, friends, side hustles, vacations…so only you (and your partner or spouse, of course) can decide if your plans and actions are required. If your friends or family want you to do something, but you’re so darned tired you just want to sleep, or retreat into your cave, or go the gym, you have every right to make that choice. If you want to choose one thing over something else, and someone gives you grief for it, know that their attitude is about them, not you. 3. And finally - and this is a big one - live your life according to your priorities, not someone else’s. I even mean your partner or spouse. Hopefully you two are on the same page and support each other so it’s not an issue, but at the end of the day, you deserve to live an authentic life. We get one shot at this (at least on a conscious level, but that’s another discussion for another day). If you choose to live a life that doesn’t make sense to anyone else, or others think it’s too risky, or silly, or a waste of time - so what? They have their own lives to live. But, you are responsible for taking action on what you desire.Do you feel your comfort zone? Step outside. How far you step is up to you - but the more steps you take, the closer you’ll get to experiencing the positive effects. But the number of steps is up to you.And there is so much more to hear....listen today!

Breaking from her normal somewhat scripted, organized delivery format, Karen speaks off the cuff on the subject of SOMEDAY. This isn’t a discussion of how we react to the loss of celebrities. It’s an emotional talk on how events like this remind of our own mortality - if an accident like this can happen in a blink to someone with extensive resources at his fingertips and seemed to have it all, we need to remain cognizant that tomorrow isn’t promised, and your SOMEDAY should be TODAY.Stop putting it (whatever it is) off. Day 1 is Today. Someday may not come, so stop waiting for it. We will miss you all. Hopefully, you also already realize that you are worth everything that you’ve ever wanted, or at least wanted to try.And that you’re not like me, and realized it earlier than your 50th birthday.Just in the past year do I feel like a lone flower, pushing my way up through a difficult and unexpected spot, to find the sun and realize my potential. And let me tell you - it’s empowering like nothing I’ve ever felt before. Don’t be like me and let fear or self-doubt get in your way. It’s only been in this past year that I’ve really started to take risks, to push myself, to do things I’d only thought of, but not thinking it would work, or I was good enough. Sure, I’ve overcome challenges in the past, and worked hard to get where I am, but I wasted a lot of time waiting for someone else to give me permission, figuratively or literally, to be me. If you’re on this same track, or know someone who is, listen closely, take notes, listen again if needed.

To know your starting point, attention and homage must be given to your past.As I sat there Tuesday night watching the ball drop, I found myself more emotional than I expected. The events that have shaped my life this past decade have been life-altering, and although I see January 1st as an arbitrary date to start making changes in your life (I mean, ANY day can be your Day 1!), it hit me that this decade has been the most important in my life. So I poured myself another glass of bubbly, directly addressed the universe to give thanks for everything I have experienced and to commit to new goals I have. During this process, I’ll admit that I found myself overwhelmed with emotion, and watched the celebrations on TV through tearful, emotional, but happy eyes. I truly have a life for which I am extremely grateful.Although this first installment of 2020 is personal, I hope that you find it an indication that you are not alone in any of your struggles, issues or experiences, and that you hear that not only have I been there, but I have both survived and thrived because of it. After this, I will tackle subjects that I know will be of interest to you, and bring value to help you on your own personal journey.

Some believe that planning ahead and thinking too much about the future (some of which is out of your control), causes too much stress. I, however, believe the opposite - by preparing for upcoming events, you remove a large chunk of the unknown, overcoming fears, and are all the more prepared to handle life hands you.Today we find ourselves on the cusp of both a fresh new year and a new decade, full of endless potential and excitement. Although it really is an arbitrary marker, our mental clocks are reset and restarted, giving us the incentive to strive for change and improvement where desired. For me, 2019 was a year of successful and dramatic personal and professional change, a great majority of which was outlined, designed, and planned in the last part of 2018. My purpose in this campaign is to share with you the steps I took, and continue to take, to experience continued growth in 2020.

You should care about what you wear!I spend quite a bit of time on social media and reading articles and publications to keep myself current, trying to stay ahead of the change curve. And in the past few weeks, I have come across a lot of chatter about the importance of how you dress, particularly at work or in professional settings. The opinions range from “I always wear a suit” to “I dress to match my audience and setting” to “It shouldn’t matter how I dress or what I wear” to “I don’t care what people expect, I’m going to be me.”I have addressed this in the past, and I’ll probably talk about it again in the future, because it elicits such a passion in me. On one hand, I understand that people want to be respected based on their message and the value they bring to the table over how they look. My coaching clients struggle with this and dive deep into how they can make improvements in their executive presence, presentations, demeanor, leadership skills, and succeeding in a new role. The research they have done, the education and experience they have acquired are worth much more than their clothes. But here’s the catch. You are a walking billboard. You are your product. You are your brand.Take a listen. There is research that points to the importance of your image.

In today’s mood and environment, we as a society often struggle with finding common ground. The lack of self-awareness, common courtesy, and respect for the feelings and needs of others is contributing to, or maybe the reason for, such discourse and inability to even consider, let alone listen to, differing viewpoints. This has caused a disruption in basic manners, in how we treat and interact with each other. But I believe the root cause is not simply that we disagree on how things should be done, I believe we, meaning humans, are at risk of losing sight of who we are as individuals, and for how much we are ultimately responsible for the outcomes of interactions with others. I must also clearly state that you, and you alone, are responsible for your behaviors and reactions to others. And although you are not responsible for the behavior of others, you have complete control over how you choose and intend to interact with others in the first place.

Sales professionals and gatekeepers have been at conflict for as long as business has existed...but issues arise when respect when people are disregarded, disrespected, and only seen as obstacles. A few days ago, I reluctantly engaged in a social media conversation on gatekeepers and those who try to get past them to get in direct contact with decision makers to sell their wares and services. And while the conversations were based on so-called creative ways on how to “get around” the gatekeepers - which is a valid skill in the sales arena - what I was actually reading was a list of how to lie and do whatever it takes to get what you want. The environment is frustrating on both ends - and each side needs to be reminded of that. We're all human, and all in this together.

Discussed in this episode is a very popular and accepted way of hosting events, in a way to which M-A-N-Y people respond very well. It may even be something they crave. But I would wager that there are also many others that do it, or go along with it, because they believe it’s the way things should go. I’m here to tell you there are alternatives, to trust your gut, and be on alert. And be cautious of what is being fed to you.I want you to think about how you’re participating in life and allowing things to happen around and to you. I want you to make your decisions and choices based on your own needs and desires. I want you to not buy into the party just because it seems cool and is a popular way of doing something. What works for and is good for others may not work or bring value to you. Don’t follow the trend or activity or advice strictly because you think that’s what others are doing or because you randomly or blindly think you should. Because someone else is doing it. Buck the trend and find your own path. In fact, if it feels off or too good to be true - which most of the time it is - stand up to it, call it out for what it really is, and remove it from your life.

Art is defined as “the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.” And I would most definitely say that high fashion fits this description. Some fashions presented during the Big 4 Shows are neither realistic depictions of what real people wear nor are they what will actually be found in retailers - and what we see on the runway isn’t always intended to be. They are often artistic, conceptual, communicating a mood, thought or are a sign of individual presentation. They mean more than just models walking the runway wearing clothes - the process is art.Art is creative, inspirational, avant-garde, provocative, sometimes frightening, thought-provoking, open to interpretation, experimental, collectable, and reflective the real world. Fashion is the same.People’s taste in art is subjective, and reactions can range from disinterest to mild to curious to extreme, both positively and negatively. Again, fashion is the same.

And are you or are you not in control of how you spend your time?Feedback from some said it was a great idea, and they maybe-kinda-sorta wanted to try it but didn’t for mainly one of two reasons: they knew they were hopefully disorganized anyway, so they’ve learned to live with it, or they didn’t have time. Does anyone else see the irony? You don’t have time to figure out where you can save yourself time?Hmmm…I think we’re dealing with some fear here.Fear of admitting you have work to do. Fear of realizing and finally accepting that you have unrealized goals and that accountability for that only sits on one person. I use the word accountability because I’ve come to greatly dislike the word blame - it creates too much negativity of thought, and that causes displaced anger, confusion, distraction and additional delay. I much more prefer to deal with Tune in to hear more about what I have to say about this...

Weak time management stems from a lack of self-awareness is simply due to a lack of proactive planning and prioritization. To become a powerful force in your own life, one with the ability to create the time and space you need, you need to see yourself as an independent being, with your own thoughts, desires and needs. This does not mean you need to be alone. Being independent does not in any way automatically equate to being alone, or lonely. It means you are a whole being, with enough self-respect, self-love, and self-awareness to know that you are an autonomous and influential person.Allow yourself to blossom into the strong, independent being that commands respect and that deep inside you know you truly are.
