This week, in Episode 12, we're laughing, chatting, and reading with Alana Dao, author of "Southern Hustle: Houston Hip-Hop & Chinese Chicken." As we've seen in FX's "The Bear," (big love for that show here at The BS!) the energy and buzz of working in kitchens can show up in someone's DNA. Alana echoes that sentiment as she shares the tale of her great grandparents' journey to the U.S. and how her family's Houston restaurant, Timmy Chan's (and the egg rolls, fried chicken, and rice served there)  have become iconic in the chopped and screwed rap music. To be black and southern is to contend with the embedded legacy of racial terror and grapple with the unique and enduring culture created in its shadow. The term “dirty south” can invoke many images connected to southern agrarian life, but hip-hop artists have transformed it into a banner of pride. Dirty South now represents a short cut for understanding the perspectives of creatives who were raised or procured their work in the South – through music, art, fashion, and other forms of cultural products that possessed a specific, Southern lens.  This work has been captured in an exhibit called, “Dirty South,” currently on display at the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston until February.  On this episode of I SEE U, join us as guest host, Dr. Melayne Price, chats with the exhibit's curator, Valerie Cassel Oliver, as well as Houston artists Nathaniel Donnett and Mel Chin whose works are included in the show. Find out what happens when contemporary art merges with the roots of Southern hip-hop culture in The Dirty South.

To me, it was one of the most tragic deaths in Houston Hip-Hop history. Losing DJ Screw, Pimp C, Big Moe, and so many others... all of those deaths hit me pretty hard. But when DJ Chill called me at 11:30pm on May 1st 2006 to tell me Hawk had been shot, my heart sunk. But at that first moment I really didn't believe it. "Who would shoot Hawk? Why?" To me he was one of the nicest, most honest and reliable people in the entire community. I didn't know anyone who had any problem with Hawk. Within the music community, he was really one of those dudes that everyone liked. And within the Screwed Up Click, he really was the 5 Star General. The passing of his brother Fat Pat in 1998 was a huge hit to the Houston community. Then when Screw passed in 2000, that was about as bad as things could get. Those were horrible deaths to have to deal with and get past. I had a hard time with them both, but to me, Hawk was a real friend. We didn't hang out and BBQ and shit like that, but when I needed to rally the SUC for something, when we needed to raise money for the station, when we were doing anything for charity, anything, Hawk was generally the first person to say yes and come down and lend a hand. Within the SUC he was very literally THAT DUDE that was holding everyone together after their - for lack of a better term - leaders died. Hawk was a true H-Town original and his wife Meshah is doing a great job raising their sons and keeping his legacy alive. Check www.pushermania.com this week and I will post all the info I can find regarding the day he is being given by the City of Houston. May 8th will officially be Hawk's day in H-Town, beginning next week. It's about damn time. ONE TIME FOR THE REALEST! REST IN PEACE BIG HAWK! Pushermania Podcast Network

EPISODE 05 --=(] buhbOmp radio [)=-- a wide variety of styles from hip-hop, dancehall, soca, broken beat, Miami/Atlanta bass, and much more, brought to you by the buhbOmp crew: JD, Lil Tiger, Empanadamn, Elz, Cashless and friends. For our fifth episode, we present "Thats Wus Up!!", a debut mix from Houston native and vet Ish. This mix is a virtual tour through the past, present, and future of electronic music. Playing the role of "Disco Pimp", Ish defies the normal logistics of mixing by throwing in his own remixes throughout the endeavor. Cruising at a speed of just over 124 bpm's, there is a lil' something on here for every dancefloor dwellar. "I started out as a teenager in a dance crew battling at clubs to the deep house of the early nineties, long before I got into Hip-Hop. So dance music is nothing new to me. Some may be taken back by this mix simply because I have been an active member of the local Houston Hip-Hop scene for so long now, and the people who know me, know me primarily as a Hip-Hop deejay. Those who are surprised, just don't know my past. Some will even hate, it is these folks who are the ones that are usually playin the wall while their gal's on the dancefloor though. You got to understand, there is no limits or boundaries with this deejay shit. Your job is to bring it, and make asses move ... and if you ain't knowing ... you must be hoe'n. Thats Wus Up!!" As an active member of the Houston Hip-Hop community, you can usually catch Ish doing his thing with the local Houston act "Lower Life Form" www.lowerlifeform.com or as a member of Adio Footwear's Musical Team at www.rockadio.com, and of course on his personal page www.myspace.com/ish. Ish would like to thank the BuhBomp crew for allowing him to host his mix, as well as influencing him heavily along the way. (Of course, we here at BuhBomp should be doing the thanking. We're all about this shit, and best believe the influences run both ways.
